Avoiding Blowouts An Important Next Step
July 26th, 2010Bucs fans often debate what the team must accomplish to have a “successful” season in 2010.
Of course, coming off a 3-13 season and lacking proven talent and experience means expectations are low.
For many, ultimately, every season is all about the wins and losses. But improvement — or failure — won’t be that simple to measure, explains former Bucs defensive end Steve White, a JoeBucsFan.com analyst.
On his Passing On The Game blog, White touches on evaluting the Bucs’ improvement. He explains that losing by single digits, as well as winning, will be important. Joe recommends you read his piece.
13, 13, 24, 19, 28, 31, 23,
No those aren’t the lottery numbers from last night. Those are some of the margins of defeat from last year. In 5 games we were outscored by 19 points or more. Twice that number was 28 or higher.
Joe agrees with White’s take.
And Joe might also express it this way: that for Raheem The Dream to keep his job the Bucs need to lose games because they are short on talent, not short on coaching, desire and preparation, which was far too often the case last year.

Yes, and Leiweke is leaving the Seahawks and the Lightning are getting better. Vinik is the man and this is “HOCKEYTOWN” !!!!!!!
July 26th, 2010 at 2:08 pm
Once teams got a chance to see the Dallas tape, what happened the next 5 or 6 games? Simple formula. Stop the Bucs running game, throw deep.
July 26th, 2010 at 2:40 pm
Single digit loses, double digit loses are loses in my book. To me, unless you win or tie, its a loss. See guys, don’t try to out think yourselves on this one, just understand that Bucs will have a losing season and you won’t have to fret about analysing the quality of the loss.
Keep em low partners! And you won’t be let down. That and you won’t have to explain yourselves to the negative nancy’s on here.
Keep it honest and you won’t have to fight with those haters.
July 26th, 2010 at 2:52 pm
Measuring success by the margin of defeat is loserville.
July 26th, 2010 at 2:58 pm
“In 5 games we were outscored by 19 points or more. Twice that number was 28 or higher.”
Maybe I’m not getting it, but is White trying to say we were outscored by 28 or more in 10 games last season? Or is he saying that 19 doubled is 28, cause that’s wrong too.
Having said that, it’s all about baby steps and improving our team.
July 26th, 2010 at 3:15 pm
Re-read it like this: ““In 5 games we were outscored by 19 points or more. [Of those five games], Twice that [margin of defeat] was 28 or higher.”
July 26th, 2010 at 3:21 pm
Steve, posted some very interesting points I agree that every team is rated by their W-L record first and foremost (unless you’re Gruden).
Personalwise I don’ expect a lot of improvement in the Bucs from 2009 to 2010. While I applaud the drafting of DT’s Price & McCoy along with WR’s Bunn & Williams this IS the NFL. Rookies rarely have that much of an impact on a team’s W-L record.
The IMPROVEMENT issue is what I will be watching closely. Coach Morris did show a turn around once he sacked Bates and I expect that to continue into 2010.
My biggest concern is the offense, especially if Penn doesn’t show up. The play calling of 2009 was VERY suspect. In fact a lot of the reason that the Bucs lost by so much was due to hideous play calling and not being able to modify their game plan.

Didn’t Vince Lombardi say “Winning isn’t everything if you can avoid a blowout.” Good God – he’s probably rolling over in his grave.

I guess the Morris apologists never read “The Art of War” by Sun Tzu
July 26th, 2010 at 4:08 pm
Perhaps being negative is a way to cope with all the bs that’s being shoveled by the optomists?
Seems they come out hot and heavy when a positive proponent of the Raheem Morris era tries to come up with irrational positive spin?
Again, just set your expectations to luke warm and you won’t be surprised either way.
July 26th, 2010 at 4:09 pm
Ooops my bad I found out that Morris’s favorite author isn’t Sun Tzu –
It’s Sunny Too who penned ‘The Art of Coming Close to Winnng”

Must the negative nancy’s flame the positive delusionals ALL the time?
Other than ‘you know who’ being the mother hen of the JBF comment blogs doesn’t mean you mean spirited ‘average fanbase’ needs to pick on the ‘die-hard delusional fanbase’ one bit.
Look, I’m a middle of the road type of fan, I have zero expectations when there is no reason to believe the Bucs will win. I am neither overly positive or angrily negative over the Buccaneers. Afterall, with the lowest payroll, youngest team and youngest coaching staff in the league, inexperience rules the day. So why would anyone expect much out of this team?
I say, don’t waste your energy people. because by mid-season we will allget the opportunity to dream about 2011’s draft prospects, and start preparing for how to celebrate yet another critically aclaimed draft!
Come to think of it, maybe that’s how we were able to win the Super Bowl of the draft this year? The organization was able to fully focus on the rookies from week 5!
July 26th, 2010 at 4:53 pm
Maybe we can lose ten straight in overtime!
July 26th, 2010 at 5:24 pm
Curious, why are so many are so eager to “refute” any improvement short of wins. Are you rooting for the Bucs or are you rooting for vindication of your own opinion of Morris (or Gruden)? Not sure I get that. I just want the Bucs to improve. Hope it is by a bunch of wins, but if not I am capable — as most reasonable human beings should be — of seeing shade of gray. A team can improve but not win every game, right?
July 26th, 2010 at 5:43 pm
A team can improve and still lose…………… what about all the close games Gruden lost? What about Gruden almost winning the division his last year if it weren’t for that big play by the Raiders? Same with the Falcons. What about ALL THE CLOSE GAMES FROM GRUDEN’S TEAMS????
You guys make me sick with your ‘as a matter of fact’ close losses will be just as good as wins this year.
I am sick an tired of all of the excuses being collected before Raheem even begins to lose. AND YOU GUYS HAVE ALREADY ADMITTED THAT THIS TEAM WILL LOSE. So how do you keep Raheem’s job safe??? You make all these freakin excuses.
Again, you guys make me sick. Seriously, this time, I have had enough with posting on here. Enjoy the rage quitting from me, because you will NEVER see me post again on here and GRACE you with my excellence!
Sick to my stomach!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Please don’t leave RaDomDaRacist. We will try to be more negative.
July 26th, 2010 at 6:10 pm
See, I knew one of the biggest turds would appear and give us an answer. The real reason the “success” of this yera can only be measured in wins is because of all the left over Gruden anger. Ridiculous. Get over it. Gruden is gone.
That means that a bunch of the “hate” on here is bogus angry Gruden love.
July 26th, 2010 at 6:10 pm
RahDom, can you maybe take RadioMush with you on your way out?
July 26th, 2010 at 6:16 pm
Let’s do a little poll. How many of the most strident “haters” on here are actually just angry Gruden lovers that would never give the new regime a fair shake:
Rah Dom — CHECK
Eric — CHECK
Thomas — CHECK
Mushface — CHECK
The list goes on. Feel free to add a few. Hating your current team because you loved Gruden so, is really, really stupid. Gruden is not coming back. be angry at the Glazers if you want, but Dom and Morris had nothing to do with Gruden’s firing.
Personalities over team. Crazy.
July 26th, 2010 at 6:18 pm
Just so I can prepare for the upcoming season, exactly how many points can the Bucs lose by to be considered a “quality” loss? Would a 10 point defeat be considered “improvement”? What if they are down 14 but score a touchdown with 3 seconds left? Is that a step in the right direction?

Lets trade Penn, Clayton, and a 2nd rounder to the Chargers for Vincent Jackson and Mcneil.
July 26th, 2010 at 7:56 pm
Only those sheep who KNOW that this season will be another disaster are trying to set a safety net for their recent rhetoric by agreeing with this non-sense about “even if we lose almost all of our games but aren’t embarrassed by the other team then, hey guys, we are improving since last year we got BLOWN OUT a majority of the time.”
You guys are weak and pathetic, and that is nothing more than an admission that this year will be disasteer year number 2. I dont care about Gruden,if he would have went 3-13 in his first year following Dungy I would have ripped him.
Gruden had his flaws, but what he was replaced with all flaws – his nickname should be FLAWHEEM Morris! Yes there is a real double standard here – Dungy and Gruden win frequently but not the big prizes enough and you idiots call for their heads. These bozos embarrass themselves, this fan base, this community – and you defend them if they don’t get blown out.
C’mon you have to be better than that!! You cant be that soft, weak and in love with this horrible regime!

Why are all the Rah lovers so upset? He will have an opportunity to demonstrate his greatness soon enough.
July 26th, 2010 at 8:54 pm
They have to be single digit losses. Though I think we will have a .500 or better record this year, the ones that are losses must be single digit to be considered good losses.lol
July 26th, 2010 at 9:01 pm
Question, the Giants game was 24-0, so is that a better loss than a 28 point loss? Or is it worse because we did’nt score? And if we lose 50-48 is that a better loss than 17-14 because it’s only 2 points instead of 3, or worse because we were scored on by 50 points? I’m lost and can’t figure this out. I thought we just simply need to win more games.lol
July 26th, 2010 at 9:14 pm
@Louie. LOL!
Why the hell is everybody so upset?
Got WIFE?
July 26th, 2010 at 9:21 pm

You’re so right. I’m sure a bar and grill like Mugs who caters to men who like to drink beer are totally offended by the sarcastic banter among football fans. They are probably wondering why they ever thought of advertising on a football website.
July 26th, 2010 at 10:09 pm
@Eric
“Lets trade Penn, Clayton, and a 2nd rounder to the Chargers for Vincent Jackson and Mcneil.”
Clayton is worth nothing. Forget about putting him in any kind of trade deal. No team will want him or his contract.
Trading Penn for McNeil might be ok since McNeil is also a very good, proven LT (maybe better than Penn). So right there, we wouldn’t have a hole.
I wouldn’t mind giving up a 2nd rounder either for Vincent Jackson. And what’s the big deal about giving up a draft pick here and there?? What makes keeping an unproven draft pick better than getting a proven, immediate impact playmaker who is still at a YOUNG age?? I’d feel more comfortable having a sure, proven, safe bet receiver rather than use that 2nd rounder and “hope” and pray that the player pans out. A good player is a good player and a bad player is a bad player. Period. Not everyone has to be drafted by Radio in order to be with the Bucs.
We gave up a 2nd round pick for K2 and look how well that turned out! Or else we could be stuck with rookie right now that we “hope” pans out. Do any of you wish we would’ve kept that “valuable” draft pick??
Now I agree with using the draft as the main way to build a team. I just don’t agree with relying only on the draft and expecting every pick to work out, which is what Raheem is doing.

Patrick,
Your right about Clayton. Just trying to figure out a way to get the man out of town.
But Mcneil and Jackson would be a big improvement, IMO.
But, as you pointed out, they wouldn’t do it, because of the “plan” AKA not willing to cough of the money to sign those two guys.
July 26th, 2010 at 10:37 pm
Hey can we vote to remove Raheem and hire Tim Marcum?
July 27th, 2010 at 1:26 am
LOL. Truth hurts. Look at all the Gruden love=Morris hate posters. LMAO. I guess the word “agenda” means nothing to the “hate” crowd.
July 27th, 2010 at 2:31 am
I have a great idea. Let’s bring in Matt Millen to be our GM!! I’m sure he’d be cheap! Let’s offer old man Leeman Bennett the coaching job! He’ll have his cane with him, so no more chest bumps!
July 27th, 2010 at 7:45 am

July 27th, 2010 at 7:58 am
Wow! RahDomdaKlansman was really pissed! Guess somebody stole the from the “rally” again last night! Been a bad week for the Slow squad! Rahdom ” exposed”, Thomas discredited as a fabricator! Even Louie took a Lil hit! Plus Patrick didn’t come outta that racial debacle smelling like a Rose! I’m starting to worry about you guys. If the Bucs screw around and win their first two games, it’s gonna be a free for all at the next squad meeting! If you fellas don’t turn it around pretty quick, I’m gonna have ta flip sides, just so there is somebody left ta argue with!! Damn, I heard the Bucs are gonna sign Benn and a FA OT this week! Guess I’m gonna have to crack out my “Chucky” shirt and go on a rescue mission!
July 27th, 2010 at 8:04 am
If Chucky was here, we would have signed Brandon Marshal and Bolden! Probably T.O., Too! We’d be favorites for the SuperBowl! I can’t believe what these cheap, amateurish, boneheads have done ta my team!! Put’em up JimBuc! . . . OK Eric, how’d I do? Am I In?
July 27th, 2010 at 8:07 am
Look at you fools. Yea, lets fantasize about random trade/FA scenarios and then rip the team when they dont happen. Damn, while we are at it, why dont we just go ahead and get Manning & Brady!
Nobody is lowering expectations with competitive losses. The point is that it does go beyond the W-L record TO A CERTAIN EXTENT!!! All you crybabies have to twist everything into something ridiculous to make us who have some hope look foolish. Nobody is saying we can go 0-16 and everything is ok as long as we lose by single digits.
6 wins minimum. After that, close losses add to what we accomplished. Thats all folks, nothing else. If we lose more than 6, then we are going backwards. If we win 6 and get blown out in all the rest, we are even which isnt good enough.
Lucky, 4-12 is totally unacceptable. None of us kool-aid drinkers will accept that.
July 27th, 2010 at 8:16 am
Capt.Tim,
Not bad, but its Brandon Marshall, Holmes, AB and Mcnabb! With Mr. Rah as DC.
I dunno about Super Bowl, but NFC South Title and a shot in the playoffs!
Id rather have Chucky instead of just his playbook operated by a cheap imitation.
July 27th, 2010 at 8:33 am
Capt Tim, you need to drop all that race $h!t already. Pullease, it’s really getting old quick.
Lucky,
IMO 4-12 is not an improvement at all. It is actually worse than last year’s 3-13, because the strength of schedule is much less. If the Bucs go 4-12 this year, the Glazers need to fire Raheem and his cronies. I’d give Dominick one more year, and keep Rich Bisaccia, possibly promoting him to interim Head Coach. It would be nice to have Chucky back, but I don’t see 4-12 happening though, the Bucs are better than that. 8-8 +/- 1
July 27th, 2010 at 8:55 am
Gary says: “The point is that it does go beyond the W-L record TO A CERTAIN EXTENT!!!”
Are you talking about the NFL or a 5 yr old t-ball league where everybody gets a trophy for participating?
July 27th, 2010 at 9:36 am
Eric- Really? After all you trash that guy, you still pick him for DC? I think that’s really strange. . . BigMac- I didn’t start it, Nor did I bring it up here first. I am also not mentioning it again after this post! But if you read the things that were written on that article, I think it was bad enough to be “called out” to show that the rest of us don’t subscribe to that way of thinking. To have said nothing would have been a silent stamp of endorsement, and the people here- friend or foe- are better than that! I don’t wanna talk about it anymore, that’s for certin. It was embarrassing, Eric again- why not Farve? I supported that one!!
July 27th, 2010 at 9:40 am
Lightning,
I would have thought the part in all caps would have made it very clear what I meant, but apparently it escapes you. If you don’t get it, you never will. Record is everything, all I’m saying is being competitive counts for a little bit. Its not more important than winning or losing, but does provide some context. I’m sure you still don’t understand right?
July 27th, 2010 at 9:51 am
Gary,
Not random, I was on here clamoring for resigning AB and trading for marshall all offseason, as well as Holmes.
All were totally doable, unlike trading for Manning or Brady.
And, I believe of Bruce allen could trade for McNabb for the Skins, why not the bucs?
July 27th, 2010 at 9:58 am
@Eric
“Id rather have Chucky instead of just his playbook operated by a cheap imitation.”
And that’s another thing. Why the hell is Chucky gone??? We’re still using his playbook, with a cheap coach running the show. Just fire Olsen and bring Gruden back. No difference. Same playbook. Except we’d have a great coach that is smart as hell about the game of football and one that disciplines his players and kicks them in the ass.
@JimBuc
Me, along with the others, don’t hate Raheem just because we’re big Gruden fans. We hate Morris because we hate Morris!! He, along with his partner Dumbnik, has humiliated this franchise and turned it into a laughing stock over a period of just one year. We have good reasons to be mad. Do you think fans of other teams would be mad if Raheem was their coach??? Absolutely. Man, if he was the coach of a powerhouse like the Steelers or Colts, he’d be run out of town!! If he was in Philly, the place with the craziest fans on earth, people would be rioting.
July 27th, 2010 at 10:03 am
Mr. Lucky, you are giving your “arguments” too much credit. 🙂
July 27th, 2010 at 10:06 am
Eric said:
“And, I believe of Bruce allen could trade for McNabb for the Skins, why not the bucs?”
LMAO. Eric, you are too funny. It’s like you exist in an alternate universe. This kind of stuff is what got the Bucs where they are today. You realize that, right?
July 27th, 2010 at 10:13 am
Patrick said:
“He, along with his partner Dumbnik, has humiliated this franchise and turned it into a laughing stock over a period of just one year. ”
Patrick, your Gruden love is showing through. Morris and Dom just ripped off the bandaid. The “franchise” was destroyed by seven years of bad drafting. Go back and look at the Bucs draft picks over the past 7 years and see how many are still on the team and actually contributing. All Dom and Morris did was clean house to get us started in the right direction again.
For example, note that you blame Dom and Morris for last season but don’t seem willing to give them any credit for Freeman and Mccoy and Price and William and Benn etc . Not sure that is fair, but . . .
July 27th, 2010 at 10:35 am
Firing a real Coach & hiring an Amateur is what got the Bucs where they are today. Along with dumping all the veterans, some of which could have helped the rookies learn their positions at the NFL level.
When you fire a Coach for going 9-7 two years in a row to hiring a coach that you hope will lose by only single digit numbers, sure lends credence to traveling the road to nowhere.
July 27th, 2010 at 10:44 am
@JimBuc
I really don’t think Gruden’s drafts were as bad as everybody says they are.
You said “Go back and look at the Bucs draft picks over the past 7 years and see how many are still on the team and actually contributing.”
I’ll name them.
Geno Hayes, Quincy Black, Barrett Ruud, Davin Joseph, Jeremy Trueblood, Cadillac, Tanard Jackson, Arron Sears (great pick by Gruden, not his fault he had mental health issues later on). I know he had a couple of bad picks, especially the Gaines Adams pick (RIP), but remember that Gruden wanted to trade up for Calvin Johnson but Allen wouldn’t let him. And Monte actually wanted Gaines the most out of anyone. He thought he would be the next Simeon Rice. If they had listened to Chucky, he’d probably still be here, and we’d have a playmaking WR.
Those players I just mentioned above are guys that Raheem and co have a lot of confidence in apparently and guys that showed some potential last year. They’re counting on them a lot. So if they turn out to be the long term pieces of our defenses, what will you be saying about Gruden’s drafts then?? If you recall, Tony Dungy’s drafts weren’t all that great. Out of 6 seasons, his only good picks were Dunn, Alstott, Ronde, and Brian Kelly. Ronde and Alstott were the only excellent picks out of that group. Also, how many busts did Dungy draft?? Remember Anthony and Jaquez Green?? Anthony McFarland? No offense to Tony Dungy, I love the guy and think he was phenomenal here in Tampa, but I’m just saying.
If Geno Hayes turns out to be just decent, I’ll say it was a good pick by Gruden considering he was a 5th rounder.
July 27th, 2010 at 11:42 am
“It’s like you exist in an alternate universe. This kind of stuff is what got the Bucs where they are today. You realize that, right?”
Nope, sure don’t realize it.
I think your alternative universe includes losses that are really wins and believes Raheem Morris is an effective coach.

Yeah i agree With the Sun Tzu Philosophy, so we want a strong defense right??? Not an overpowering offense…. hmmmm I would rather have both a strong offense and a strong defense..

Poor Patrick, your Lil mancrush hurts BAD, don’t it!! You worship if Chucky makes Joe’s affection for Ms. Watson pale by comparison! I’m not sure, but I get the impression that Patrick is still young. Patty, you’ll go thru these little crushes lots of times in your life, you learn, as you get older, ta let’em go, and move on! No matter who your hero Chucky drafted, they weren’t going to become good players with his “coaching”. Chucky can’t coach young players. He can only teach his system( which sucked, by the way) to players someone else had coached. Plus, while I know you’d crawl across a burning desert for him, the Players here quit on him. They were done with the Lil dictator. As I’ve said before, as soon as Monte Kiffin announced he was leaving, it was Game over for Our Lil munchkin Coach. They loved Kiffin, and despised The Chuckster! I know that breaks your heart, but you have ta let it go. He’s gone, and he’s not EVER coming back. I realize that you and the Chuckettes are having a hard time facing this, but it’s over!mixing love affairs and Football is a bad business. Somebody ends up getting their heart broke. Not only is it hard on you and the Chuckettes, but the rest of us here are really, really sick of listening to you guys endlessly proffessing your live. Dry yer eyes, and try to move on!
