Trendsetter Todd Bowles
April 26th, 2023Buccaneers general manager Jason Licht is a little busy in these final hours before the NFL Draft, but there is a new Licht interview posted on The Rock Stops Here podcast.
Local multimedia icon Rock Riley sat down with Licht four weeks ago at the NFL Annual Meeting in Phoenix. Joe had the good fortune of sitting in on the session in a swanky outdoor resort lounge.
Rock hit Licht with a question about needing a running/mobile quarterback in a changing NFL. Licht pointed to Tom Brady and throw a little cold water on the question. And in the process, he noted that his head coach is a trendsetter that fellow coaches study.
“The quarterback position, for one, is changing a lot,” Licht replied. “Defenses are changing, every five or six years they evolve into something that’s a new game. So, Todd does a great job keeping fresh his defense and changing things. I know a lot of people look to Todd to see what he does because of that. But the overall game is changing.”
Joe wonders how Bowles’ adaptations, now entering his fifth season as Tampa Bay defensive coordinator, will show up in this week’s NFL Draft. If the Bucs draft a versatile cornerback with their first-round pick, then that will be quite a signal that Bowles’ has taken investing in/emphasizing the defensive backfield to a new level.

Todd Bowels “TREND” as a head coach is a LOSING RECORD — You are who your record says you are……..this guy managed have a losing season with Tom Brady at QB…..speaks volumes.
April 26th, 2023 at 10:26 am
Bowles “trend” is
2016 5-11
2017 5-11
2018 4-12
2022 8-9
2023 …
His last 4 seasons as a head coach his teams average 5.5 wins
Arians CRIPPLED this franchise by forcing his friend on the team and not allowing the team to hire the best available coach

This was a set up story if I ever heard one. Bowles is a trend setter. HAHAHAHAHA

Bring on the BEEF. PRIME BEEF.

Dufuss HC
Should have been canned at the end of the miserable season.

As long as I am ragging on Bowles I have been thinking if a different coach, someone like Shaun Payton would/ would have brought the full potential out of Devin White. IMO part of DW problem is poor coaching, not X’s and O’s but strict discipline and demanding accountability for each detail of his play on every play. I don’t think he has been held to that standard and certainly hasn’t been “punished “ for not messing up his responsibilities on every play. Like yanking his ass mid game until he has had his ass chewed and cooled off on the bench.
Rinse and repeat!
Bowles has been responsible for enabling DW boneheaded play on the field
April 26th, 2023 at 11:37 am
He’ll be fired after the season after recording another losing record. He’ll never get another HC gig after this one.
April 26th, 2023 at 11:38 am
Dear Jason Licht,
Please sign A.J. McCarron
April 26th, 2023 at 11:43 am
Todd Bowles, the ultimate trendsetter of losing as a HC – going for 5 in a row!
April 26th, 2023 at 11:43 am
All of the above, spot on. Saved me the trouble. Cue the Bloweszo apologists.
Meanwhile, we need at least two more QBs for training camp, No problem if one of them is McCarron.
April 26th, 2023 at 11:45 am
Bowles defenses have always worked best when he has lots of options to choose from in the secondary. Last year we didn’t have a diverse enough group of nickel/safety hybrids.
April 26th, 2023 at 12:18 pm
Trenches!!!
OT!!!
April 26th, 2023 at 12:22 pm
Not hard to stay on topic here, just look at the SBLV gameplan then look at every defense that played the Chiefs in 2021, lot’s of cover 2 disguised with 3 safeties, floating CBs over the top to set their zone to take away a third of the field, and lot of pressure packages. It’s easy to rag on an NFL coach when you’re just a spectator, but it looks ridiculous when you’ve got the football IQ of a pylon. Remember Johnny, Bobby, & Vic the hecklers from “Major League”? lol
April 26th, 2023 at 12:26 pm
Only the Bucs would give this guy a head coaching job. I don’t think he wanted the job when Arians called him and told him he was being promoted he said I am at a basketball game I will talk about it later. That doesn’t sound like he was enthusiastic.
April 26th, 2023 at 12:28 pm
Remember 4 losing seasons in a row as headcoich? Remember Cooper Kupp? Yeah, Toad never heard of him.
April 26th, 2023 at 12:33 pm
LV, I agree with you on the handling of White. Definitely needs/needed more discipline and hard coaching. Unbelievably talented athlete but not so much going on above the neck. Hard coaching is what a player like that needs. And a prideful player like that would definitely respond to being pulled for a series or two or demoted as a starter if need be.
April 26th, 2023 at 12:39 pm
It’s depressing to see his bald head .
April 26th, 2023 at 12:46 pm
He won’t survive the entire season.
April 26th, 2023 at 1:18 pm
AlwaysBucs, you nailed it. BA essentially tied Lichts hands. Had he retired after the season, we may not have been stuck with Bowles. I’m convinced of that. Ownership played a role as well. I fear a 3-7 start is the only way the powers that be will finally be convinced.
April 26th, 2023 at 1:19 pm
Toad Bowels IS a trendsetter, but I don’t like the trend that he is setting. Trade Toad for a 6 pack of Bud Light so whiny Bucs Co- Craptain Devin White can drown his sorrows when the Bucs trade White (and the horse he rode in on) to Houston or Dallas this weekend. D. White seems to fit the new profile of a Bud Light drinker. He (and the horse he rode in on) would be happier in Texas or maybe with the Denver Broncos or Indianapolis Colts. It’s an equine thing that only Horse whisperers understand.
April 26th, 2023 at 1:20 pm
He is a nice guy but he totally screwed up a Super Bowl team… I gave him a wash with the Jets because well you know it was the Jets… The only tend setting he did was on how to puck up a team… Everyone blamed the offensive coordinator but the head coach never changed anything… So I figured the coach had him run what he wanted…
April 26th, 2023 at 1:32 pm
Brother Redeemer, they will eject his azz when he reaches 9 losses, the magic number to cement his legacy as the headcoich with the most consecutive losing seasons in the modern NFL era. That is quite an accomplishment. Rare air, id say.
April 26th, 2023 at 1:33 pm
All of the above is why I have turned on the ownership… if they can’t see it themselves , and they can’t, nothing fundamentally will change. They are casual owners of a sports team that is gushing money.
They are like a casual fisherman that really doesn’t care if he catches fish, he is satisfied in other ways. The Glazer’s just don’t have that killer instinct in sports competition, it is a fun spectacle for them, yeah the wins are fun but the loses don’t DRIVE them to make corrections.
April 26th, 2023 at 1:43 pm
Trending down since 2015
April 26th, 2023 at 2:02 pm
Brother GF, I fear if they meraculosly win the stinking south, he gets another year. Never underestimate the power of stupidity, and the want for that home playoff game. Worst case scenario. Even if they did manage to win the division, they’d get destroyed in any playoff game. Hope you’re right
April 26th, 2023 at 2:21 pm
ChiBuc,
it must be the drugs man.
Too bad you missed the Super Bowl. 3 years ago, The 13- 5 record with the division Win 2 Seasons ago, and the (barely) division win last seaso. Still won it though.
Since 2015? It Must Be the Drugs man… You’ve lost A LOT of time. BTW, Lichts first season was 2014 if that’s where you’re trying to go. You’d STILL be wrong of course but who’s counting?
April 26th, 2023 at 2:24 pm
There is a fine line between trendsetting and over complicating a situation. We have huge investments in the secondary, and play in a division not likely to throw the ball often. To me, it seems as if we are a bit short on the guys we need to stop the run.
April 26th, 2023 at 2:30 pm
Obvious.. let’s reset to the season before TB appeared out of nowhere.
April 26th, 2023 at 2:41 pm
Trending lower. The Glazers have to know that Bowles is not going to right the ship without a franchise QB. Also there are still too many holes in this team not to be in a rebuild mode and there is not much the Bucs can do with the Cap situation, so that begs the question: Is Bowles job protected for another year even if the Bucs have a losing season?
April 26th, 2023 at 2:46 pm
I agree with most bowels isn’t the best head coach but our defense is the biggest reason we won a Super Bowl. His defense kepted us in a lot of games this year.
April 26th, 2023 at 3:13 pm
Redeemer, of course you are right. Time to guzzle a bottle of gin.
April 26th, 2023 at 4:17 pm
The Buc fan hate for Todd Bowles is palpable. Why? I don’t know…..
April 26th, 2023 at 4:25 pm
Mike Johnson, are you being sarcastic?
Bowles took a championship team and drove it into the ground. He changed the philosophy instead of staying with what worked. Squandering TB12’s last year wouldn’t have happened under BA.
April 26th, 2023 at 9:13 pm
Clearly not “Obvious” to you that the article refers to Bowles as a trendsetter. To quote: “he noted that his head coach is a trendsetter…” Head coach Todd Bowles has had a losing season every year after the 2015 season, hence ” Trending down since 2015.”
I’m aware of the teams history AND HC Bowles’s. Seems like it’s you who got lost following the bouncing ball, “Obviously.”
April 26th, 2023 at 10:19 pm
Bucs are a bad team having a bad off-season. They are a team that badly needs a rebuild and are being run by two guys who know they won’t be around long enough to survive a rebuild. Bad combination. This is a team headed into a long stretch of mediocrity…which is NFL purgatory.
April 26th, 2023 at 10:34 pm
Bucs are a bad team having a bad off-season. The only one who still thinks the Bucs are good is the Bucs. It’s a team that badly needs a rebuild being run by two guys who know they won’t be around long enough to survive a rebuild. Bad combination for the future of the franchise. This is a team headed down a long path of mediocrity: Not good enough to truly contend but not bad enough to to have draft assets and cap room. NFL purgatory.
