Bucs In Value Position For Anthony Richardson?
April 25th, 2023Todd Bowles may not want to draft a quarterback on Thursday night, but he might not have a choice.
Jason Licht is a powerful, 10-year general manager with a Super Bowl ring and the strong blessing of ownership. Also, at the quarterback position, the Bucs are paying Baker Mayfield peanuts and Kyle Trask is earning peanut shells. Licht and Team Glazer might be very happy to take a quality quarterback prospect that falls to them at No. 19 overall.
And at No. 19, is Florida Gators raw, freakish specimen of a quarterback a quality risk? A lot of people think he is. Many do not.
Joe laughs at the notion of Richardson being a top-10 pick; that should be reserved for highly successful college players. But what value represents at No. 19 is a different animal. Heck if you ask a lot of legitimate draft analysts, they’ll tell you there aren’t 19 true first-round talents in this draft.
So what about Richardson for the Bucs?
Well, former Pro Bowl quarterback Carson Palmer, who is a fantastic analyst, was talking all things quarterbacks today on The Dull Patrick Show. Palmer doesn’t think Richardson warrants a high first-round pick in any way, but Palmer said at No. 18 and beyond, Richardson becomes a lot more palatable and worthy of selecting because of his incredible potential.
The Bucs sit at No. 19.
If Licht and his team of data gurus and old fashioned scouts evaluate Richardson as worthy of that pick, then how could they not take him. Again, this is not Joe endorsing Richardson. Joe is only noting that if Licht’s team put in months of homework and thinks the guy is worthy at No. 19 and a legit franchise quarterback prospect, good luck telling Team Glazer they passed on him because Bowles wants to chase another edge rusher prospect or is in love with a running back.
Remember what super Bucs insider Rondé Barber said back in late January.

It’s good to leave it up in the air publicly so that if he actually did drop as far as us, some teams may seek to trade up to our spot. It would be idiotic for us to draft him and wise to take the extra capital in a trade back.
April 25th, 2023 at 2:38 pm
I don’t think we need to do that in the first round. Trade back or draft an O-Lineman. I’m not sold on Richardson, wait till next year to draft a QB if we don’t have a one at the end of this season
April 25th, 2023 at 2:41 pm
The only way I would take him is if he fell to day 2 and then I would have to think about it.
April 25th, 2023 at 2:42 pm
Come on Mr Joe…..Anybody with more than two neurons knows it will not happen……………
April 25th, 2023 at 2:45 pm
I’m a Gator fan and I saw every single game for AR-15. The kid just can’t throw, he has no touch whatsoever. To him, every throw is 100 MPH. He is exciting to watch, but he is not an NFL QB, he is a long project. I do like him, but man, if you take him in the first round then I question your draft research.
April 25th, 2023 at 2:48 pm
Bucs picking Anthony Richardson is like New Orleans picking him..makes no sense with gaping holes in the roster
April 25th, 2023 at 2:50 pm
Please no.
April 25th, 2023 at 2:50 pm
Glazers won’t sign off on another Florida quarterback not after drafting trask that high
April 25th, 2023 at 2:51 pm
IF that were to happen, the Bucs will without a doubt earn the rep of being the laughing stock of the league….
Surely the ‘brains’ of this operation isn’t that stupid!
April 25th, 2023 at 2:55 pm
Richardson will be long gone by the time we pick.
April 25th, 2023 at 2:55 pm
He won’t make it out of the top 12 most likely, but you never know.
April 25th, 2023 at 2:56 pm
Where the Beef?
April 25th, 2023 at 3:00 pm
Trade back or draft Best available player for the offensive line or Defensive End.
April 25th, 2023 at 3:09 pm
Id take Stetson B. before I would take Richardson, any day. And neither is happening

Pewter Power Says:
April 25th, 2023 at 2:50 pm
It has nothing to do with Florida. That’s superstition. Only idiots make it about the school they come from. If the player projects as an NFL player, then the school doesn’t matter.
Bottom line is he’s a boom or bust project that doesn’t make sense for this team. BUT, if Licht were selling this idea (I doubt he is) to the Glazers, I think they’d get on board. I don’t think that’s happening. I’d be shocked and disappointed if they spent their first rounder on AR.
April 25th, 2023 at 3:18 pm
No No No, why would Joe or the Bucs want a QB with a less than 55% completion rate? Why? I will admit, that JBF would be going crazy with all the AR complaints when he can’t complete any passes. NO, NO, NO! Enough already. Bring on the draft.
April 25th, 2023 at 3:19 pm
There are people who complain that we took Kyle Trask with pick 64… I watched every Gators game of Trask and Richardson, and I can tell you that Trask was a far better QB. Not even close. So now we are talking about taking Richardson at 19 because it’s a value pick? This makes no sense. Maybe Richardson figures out how to be a great QB… but that’s a big maybe, and we have to replenish our roster. Take a higher probability pick at 19 (or after trading down), and let’s see what we have in Baker (and Trask!) before revisiting the QB position. And actually, I wouldn’t mind the Bucs drafting a QB by the name of Clayton Tune in the 5th round… That could actually be real value!
April 25th, 2023 at 3:21 pm
Drafting AR15 would ensure more pain at QB and another 5 years of losing if he becomes the starter. He simply is not NFL material imo. I would rather see if the Trask/Mayfield experiment pays off this season. Drafting AR15 would also keep the Bucs from drafting a top OT this season. Hope some other team in the top ten buys off on the AR15 hype. As far as drafting a UF QB, history has a lot to say about that….UF is kind of like the Bucs, they have never been able to develop successful QBs for the NFL.
April 25th, 2023 at 3:23 pm
Seems like Doug Williams used to put some mustard on the screen passes. His numbers never screamed accuracy, either. It is a different era, but Richardson is a lot more athletic than Williams.
At Richardson’s age and a year past his stage of development, Hooker was looking to transfer from Virginia Tech.
Maybe the Gators just sucked real bad, too.
April 25th, 2023 at 3:32 pm
Richardson is horrible. He’s not raw, he’s just bad. He makes Jamarcus Russel look like Joe Montana. He’s the Roberto Aguayo of QB’s. Licht is not stupid enough to draft this guy.
April 25th, 2023 at 3:33 pm
Maybe we can draft Steve Spurrier. Oh wait….
April 25th, 2023 at 3:37 pm
Baker Mayfield has already produced FAR more than either of these two winning a Heisman trophy and taking the ugly freaking Browns to the playoffs and a first round win on the road at Pittsburgh.
WTF has Hooker done? WTF has AR done? Really!!! Oh college stats…woooo.
April 25th, 2023 at 3:38 pm
Hopefully is gone dude cant read defenses
April 25th, 2023 at 3:39 pm
How would that help us win now? That’s what a first round pick is for, not a 2-3 year time window. What potential has he shown when throwing the ball other than a big arm? All this talk reminds me of Malik Willis from last year, with draft gurus projecting him in round 1. Made it to round 3 and I think Tennessee would like their pick back.
April 25th, 2023 at 3:46 pm
It just takes one team. One team Joe. And they dont have to be highly successful as you state (Mitch Triuiski, Blake Bortles, Christian Ponder). QBs especially get overdrafted every year. And Thursday will be no different. I would not be surprised if ALL 5 QBs are gone in top 10. 4 for sure with someone sliding is real possible, like AR. But it just takes one team. Cant wait for Thursday.
April 25th, 2023 at 3:47 pm
I do not think the Bucs are going to win now, so I would like to see as exciting a third-and-long offense as possible. Richardson could do that, for good and bad, maybe better than Jameis, even.
April 25th, 2023 at 3:49 pm
Just imagine—third and long…something WILL HAPPEN.
So boring last year.
April 25th, 2023 at 3:51 pm
Please no Richardson
April 25th, 2023 at 4:01 pm
He will be gone in the top 10. His potential and intangibles, work ethic and intellect, will be too much for some starved team to ignore. Laugh T Baker all you want, but be thankful he’s in the roster, we will be less desperate. And we appear to be less desperate too, which is also important.
April 25th, 2023 at 4:07 pm
Toad Bowels must win now. The first 2-3 picks must start.
Richardson won’t.
April 25th, 2023 at 4:23 pm
And here I thought every single NFL head coach is in it to win it. Not from what I read on these incredibly informative posts. Yeah let us just #CollapseforQB in 24 draft. We all know whoever that is will just step into one buc and the entire NFL will just cancel their games against us. We #CollapsedforQB in 2024 draft.
April 25th, 2023 at 4:41 pm
Nothing to do with superstition sasquatch. Only idiots assume they know exactly what someone is trying to say from a sentence. Didn’t think I needed to go in detail about an opinion, yours is irrelevant and sense your opinion is here it’s stupid to say any quarterback is boom or bust. In case you didn’t know DUH
April 25th, 2023 at 4:49 pm
It’s gotta be a team like the Rams that take him.
We can’t afford that risk at 19.
This guy has to start this year for us.
Now if we trade back and end up with 4 top 100 picks, we might end up with 4 starters and you can’t pass that up if you believe you can draft and coach worth a damn!!
April 25th, 2023 at 4:50 pm
Bucs do not need to go QB at 19. The Bucs do need wins as Bowles and to some extent Licht could be on the hot seat. Taking Richardson voids your #1 pick in 2023 so the remaining picks HAVE to be home runs and doubles. Take a player that will contribute on the field in 2023.
April 25th, 2023 at 4:54 pm
Do you hate us Joe? Why would you wish this on us?
April 25th, 2023 at 4:58 pm
Richardson at 19 is still a big risk. But with his size, speed, and athleticism, I think he may very well be able to rush the passer….
Playing QB… not so much.
April 25th, 2023 at 5:13 pm
Did many experts predict Hurts to be a successful starter? I’m wondering what his college skills were vs AR
April 25th, 2023 at 5:46 pm
Didn’t anyone watch his film from last year. AR was terrible. He’ the Vernon Hargreaves of QBs
April 25th, 2023 at 6:31 pm
Best possible draft outcome is that Paris Johnson falls to 19 or within range for the Bucs to trade up for him
April 25th, 2023 at 8:02 pm
We already got a Gator. Let the kinda competition begin.
April 25th, 2023 at 8:34 pm
Fragile
Can’t throw to his right, all around inaccurate
Attitude issues when things go bad
Not all that good except when things are aligned perfectly
Highlights outnumbered by lowlights
Losing record.
Over-rated
April 25th, 2023 at 9:44 pm
But but but Richardson can jump far. And run fast. How enticing is that? Trade up for him!
April 25th, 2023 at 10:41 pm
All this QB talk is smoke. We will take best non QB player available, someone will fall that’s a top 10 talent. Whether it’s bijan, edge, corner, lineman we will have to find out come draft day. We have plenty of other ammunition to move up and get guys in rounds 2-4. We can address our needs and roll with Baker and Trask. If it doesn’t work out there are qbs with less flags next year and we did our do diligence with what was in the roster already
April 25th, 2023 at 10:49 pm
The tackle from Tennessee has Penix excited.
April 26th, 2023 at 3:00 am
I wouldn’t take him at 50.
Potential don’t mean squat. Look at the film folks. Looks like Tarzan plays like Jane!
April 26th, 2023 at 3:01 am
And yes I’m a Gator fan!
April 27th, 2023 at 9:52 am
Hard pass on AR please and thanks.
