Celebration Culture
April 21st, 2023Joe is taking a break from draft chatter and Gerald McCoy gems to share what Bucs offensive players are experiencing this week, their first at the office with new Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales.
It’s a rather radical change. Canales is about energy and positive vibes in a huge way, in addition to doing all the other things offensive coordinators do. Good luck matching the tone he sets. Canales walks the walk.
About a year ago, Canales did an interview with a Tennessee football coaches association. There he defined culture as, “culture is what we celebrate.”
That means getting jacked up about the positive happenings in the film room and on the grass — big and small. It means much less focus on negative, Canales continued, though mistakes or unacceptable play will be addressed firmly at the right moment as something that has crept into the culture.
Positive drowns negative, Canales believes, but he understands that can be perceived as being soft.
To that negativity, he sort of counters by saying the softness view is only from outsiders who don’t see a “level of enthusiasm and excitement that’s unparalelled.”
Man, Joe can only imagine how Bucs players are talking at the lunch table about how Canales is no Byron Leftwich, a disciple of a man who loved to berate players and then kiss and make up later.
Team meetings with the Seahawks started with free throw shooting contests, Canales said, and players were given competitive quizzes via online apps to set a culture of competition and energy that is never-ending.
Expect that kind of approach to already be in place at One Buc Palace.
Joe just hopes it all ends up with a relentless and hungry offensive line and a tight ends group that can block with its hair on fire.
If the Bucs dig their way out of being a horrible rushing attack, Joe suspects significant success on both sides of the ball will feed off that.
Canales added that Pete Carroll, his mentor and the Seahawks head coach, says every offseason that the team goal is to “recapture our work ethic” and everything is dissected from there.

Nothing wrong at all with positive reinforcement…..instead of
“I be doin’ everything to give players an opportunity to play good football” “We do what we do and he do what he do”
April 21st, 2023 at 10:12 am
Couldn’t agree more! Being a manager of people myself, I choose to focus and hone in on the strengths and successes of my teammates. Of course we must discuss mistakes but we don’t dwell on them and instead focus more on the successes, which drives them to want more positive success.

If Canalas turns out to be a top notch OC shouldn’t Bowles get some props for hiring him?
Of course! –Joe

After watching the offense on the sideline during the Dallas playoff game, a positive attitude and some excitement will be very well received by players and fans!

LOL @TBBF…. he be not!
(beat ya to it Goat lol)
April 21st, 2023 at 10:31 am
I’ve been hoping for somebody who has left the team over the winter to give us some inside information on who they blamed for the teams failings, whether it be Brady or Byron or someone else
April 21st, 2023 at 11:05 am
It’s a game!
That’s why you should never get too high or too low. Now, if my bills were dependent upon it, then I might get a little worked up.
Positivity! Love it!

I still don’t understand if hes so good why Carroll passed him over for offensive coordinator after being on his staff for so many years.
April 21st, 2023 at 11:06 am
I hated when Leftb*tch used to say ” we want to be multi”
The fahk does that even mean
April 21st, 2023 at 11:07 am
Pay tristan wirfs we can’t let him walk the sooner the better
April 21st, 2023 at 11:09 am
I thought Carrol was their de facto offensive coordinator?
April 21st, 2023 at 11:12 am
Watched the interview Canales had done with the Nashville FCA the week we hired Canales, and came away from hearing him speak on the mental make-up of being apart of a football team or establishing the culture of a team left me very impressed. Can’t wait to get deeper into the offseason and hear more, especially from players about how that culture is taking effect at 1 Buc.
April 21st, 2023 at 11:13 am
He got spunk. I wish him well.
April 21st, 2023 at 11:41 am
Off topic but I mocks of us drafting Nolan Smith. Looks like he would make a great inside LB to me?????
April 21st, 2023 at 11:49 am
He did have a chance to learn from one of the better coaches in the NFL!
April 21st, 2023 at 12:13 pm
Darcie Glazer Kassewitz would be a better OC than Leftwich.
April 21st, 2023 at 12:28 pm
I will take a Pete Carroll disciple over a Bruce arians disciple any day.
April 21st, 2023 at 12:30 pm
Max! Good one, FYI it’s “He be don’t.”
April 21st, 2023 at 12:33 pm
^oops, my bad man lol…I’ll get it right next time 🙂
April 21st, 2023 at 12:34 pm
Maybe Canales can avoid the enormous, powerfully sucking, vacuumous singularity that is his perennial loser head coich. If he can offset that with improvement on the offensive side of the ball…..we might be looking at the Bucs next head coach.
April 21st, 2023 at 12:35 pm
Max, yer killin’ me!!!
April 21st, 2023 at 12:35 pm
I like it.
April 21st, 2023 at 12:50 pm
Good coaches let their assistant coach go (non lateral, advance) and thrive, bad ones do everything they can to keep them in place and stifle their growth.
April 21st, 2023 at 1:06 pm
Goatfarmer as long as hes not Dirk Koetter in disguise! Sounds like a possible redo.
April 21st, 2023 at 1:26 pm
No doubt about Koetter, Allbuccdup- and it wouldn’t really give Licht a full universe of candidates to consider, either.
Of course the best outcome is that the Bucs finish with a winning record and Bloweszo feeds me boiled crow by hand while being forced to read all my negative posts about him.

God, I hate these millennials and their constant need for morale boosts and to have people tell them their special. It’s flat out embarrassing.
April 21st, 2023 at 1:32 pm
Sounds like Todd Bowels is giving our new OC creative control and autonomy over the offense, something he certainly did not give Super Bowl winning, Byron “No Risk It No Biscuit” Leftwich
And I have absolutely no confidence our offense will be exciting to watch with a “run the ball first, then run the ball again, and if that doesn’t work then pass it with baker mayfield” strategy regardless of what the guy we hired to be our new OC says or how happy he is to say it

Yeah! How dare people want others to make them feel good about their self when they feel down! And how dare coaches boost players morale to help them win games!

Jack Clark <- A words hurt cupcake. He cried in school when someone called him a 'turd', had to get grief counseling, claims he suffers PTSD from the incident. Typical millennial.
April 21st, 2023 at 1:56 pm
JC,
One would think that the millions of dollars most of these kids make would suffice as far as maintaining their happiness right?
I’m pretty sure if I was a player and feeling down, I’d think about my bank account and perk the hell up….. no additional coddling needed, but hey….. I’m a Gen Xer.
April 21st, 2023 at 1:59 pm
Ah the hope and optimism of April.
Enjoy it until the reality of October hits.
Remember… The Glazers gave a guy with a losing record as a HC a five year deal. We’re still deeply effed and will be for some time for some overarching point ownership wanted to make. Proper succession efforts, rewarding loyalty, ensuring the commitment upfront, goodwill marketing, politics… Somehow “winning football games” was left out of the list of priorities. In fact, if you listen to what actually has been said about why they gave him the 5 year deal – it was to ensure they didn’t fire him in the event of poor performance. Seriously? “We’re going to lock him in to make sure he gets the full chance to be a head coach even if he fails out of the gate.”
Everyone on this site has quipped about Bowles being on the hot seat. Don’t be fooled. He’s not. When the Bucs stink out loud this year we’re not going to get accountability. We’re going to get excuses. I’m calling it here and now. Screen shot this post.
Now I appreciate the sales job on Canales. Joe is a company man and all that so he 100% has to be in on the hard sell. Its part of the business plan, but if you think rationally about it – chances of him being a guru and crafting a dynamite offense in his first job as an OC are slim. He talks up the game plan matching the personnel, but the strength of this team is WR and all its been about is run run run. That’s a mixed message. Dave may become what he’s touted to be, but in year 1? His first gig? I have my doubts.
Remember when we used to watch old yt vids of the A-Train to boost our spirits? Well now we have 2 years of Brady to watch reruns of now too. A few years from now some fan will make a Brady highlight compilation video and we’ll watch the NFC Championship TD throw to Scotty Miller over and over. We’ll talk about how the greatest football player ever to play the game came to Tampa and got a ring. Each additional year the legend will grow more and more. I suppose we should be grateful for that. The Glazers seized an opportunity to get the goat and we got those spoils. But that’s over now so its back to business as usual in Tampa – the plucky lovable losers of the NFL.

Robin Williams was a famous millionaire and he still committed suicide because mental health is a real thing. You can’t manage other people’s problems you don’t understand so it’s better to listen to other people instead of telling other people how they should feel.

Jack Clark – I was literally voted ‘Most Popular’, so ha! Jokes on you.

Gen Z started in 1996. Different than millennials. Most of the younger guys on NFL teams are Gen Z.
My child and her friends are end of the generation millennials. Never ever heard any of them looking to get simple praise saying they were special. But the number of millennials that I know may be much smaller than Rod Munch’s.
There is one millennial from my neighborhood that lives at home. Born in 1994, I believe. The rest in my hood and in my daughter’s collection of friends have gone on and made lives for themselves. Some stayed in the Tampa area, some moved to Orlando area. Some moved to locations out of Florida where solid jobs took them.
I would be curious to ask Rod where his background on the generation is from, his personal experiences or from a media source?
Of course, Rod, can be very easily offended when someone in the world has a view that is different than the way he was brought up.
I laugh at all the old baby boomers (of which I am one) that somehow think the things they value or the way they view society should be the only way things can be looked at.

When we hired Canales I looked into Pete Carroll’s coaching philosophy to try and get a feel for our new OC. From what I read on Carroll, the book “The Inner Game of Tennis” had a profound impact on him and how he coached his teams. The book has a few salient points and one of that I recall most readily is how a player competes not only outside, but also inside his self. Overcoming the negative talk and imagery internally is just as much a challenge as an opponent across from you. I only briefly perused it at the library but I can see how Canales would use rah rah to influence mindsets and pushback against negative juju.

Prayer, luck, and enthusiasm are not skills
We all need to pray for this season because it’s gonna take a lot of luck with Kyle r Traskerfield at Qb
We are banking on a washout in 3 places and a guy that looks like he should be working at Dicks Sporting Goods to be quality NFL starters
Does the new guy work miracles too???
April 21st, 2023 at 10:12 pm
@Rod
“It’s flat out embarrassing.” Wow Rod a bit surprising to find out that you are such a snowflake!
First to throw an entire generation under the bus smacks of insecurity. But I’m not surprised at that given what you’ve called me because of my age.
I am not threatened by name calling though and everybody is entitled to his opinion If you wish to be a nattering nabob of negativity that’s certainly your prerogative.

He will have to, considering the notorious modern day record his boss seems destined to set.
