Chris Godwin Gives An Update On His Number
April 21st, 2023From time to time on Twitter, Joe gets this question. It seems now there is an answer.
It looks like Chris Godwin will stick with No. 14 for the rest of his Bucs days.
Godwin had always been No. 12 at Penn State and with the Bucs. That changed when a certain farm animal arrived at One Buc Palace. He wore No. 12. Uh, oh.
Godwin knew to stay in his lane. He offered up Tom Brady his beloved No. 12 and didn’t even charge him for it. As a result, Godwin flipped to No. 14.
A few months later, Godwin won a Super Bowl ring wearing No. 14. So why not stick with a good thing?
Speaking to Luke Easterling of Athlon Sports about his journey to the NFL through the draft and his local charity that helps make sure no dog is homeless, Godwin dished on the future of his number now that Brady is waffling retired (?).
Now that Brady is officially retired (for good this time, we think), Godwin isn’t sure whether or not he can go back to his old number.
“I wish that I could go back, man,” Godwin says of his jersey number dilemma. “But I think I’m stuck with 14. I think that’s gonna be me from now on. 12 has meant a lot to me, but I feel like it would be kinda weird going back right now. We’ll see. I won’t completely close the door, but odds are it’s probably 14.”
So there you have it. If you have a Chris Godwin jersey No. 12, it may be a collector’s item some day. If you have a Chris Godwin jersey No. 14, it won’t be outdated.
The most important thing? Godwin is still with the Bucs.

He is…..14

maybe he’s saying they’re not completely closing the door for a tommy b return…

14 will always be Vinny Testaverde to me.
April 21st, 2023 at 2:15 pm
Love my #14 jersey! But I love the man wearing it more!
April 21st, 2023 at 2:19 pm
yes rod…
but what about super bowl champion brad johnson…
and more so…what about the “throwin’ samoan” jack thompson 🙂
April 21st, 2023 at 2:35 pm
Owner of an ugly 12 jersey here. I don’t care what number he has, dude is still a great player and a solid human and I’m proud to have him on the team I root for.
April 21st, 2023 at 2:38 pm
Adam – I don’t know, I just always associate Vinny with 14. Unfortunately the ‘Throwin Samoan’ is slightly before my time. Speaking of which, why is he called the ‘Throwin Samoan’ yet he has just about the whitest name possible? I’m not up on my Jack Thompson trivia, but I’m sure there’s a simple answer.

There’s a picture of Godwin & Thompkins in the weight room at the Bucs training facility from this past week where Godwin is wear a team hoodie with the #12 on it, could be an old workout hoodie, but adds intrigue to the will he or won’t revert back to CG12
April 21st, 2023 at 2:51 pm
LOL! In the off-season, we find intrigue in the smallest of things. Way to spot a bit of it Dooley. I just love this site when it is positive, 🙂

why is this news?
April 21st, 2023 at 3:03 pm
THANK GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! THANK YOU CHRIS. I HAVE BEEN LOSING SLEEP OVER THIS. LOL
April 21st, 2023 at 3:07 pm
@Crickett
Tis the season, lol. I’m wondering if any Bucs players are plotting on rockin’ the #0 jersey this season. If someone does, depending on who it is I might have to add that one to the collection especially If I can get it in the creamsicle colorway.

Chris Godwin will be a great fit for our new boring as offense because he’s great at run blocking
April 21st, 2023 at 3:13 pm
@Rod Munch. Google Jack Thompson and you’ll see. he is clearly Samoan. An awful chapter in Bucs history as he replaced Doug Williams the year after A-hole racist Culverhouse wouldn’t pay the man. 2-14 that year if I recall correctly.
April 21st, 2023 at 3:25 pm
Joe. Why was my post taken down?
April 21st, 2023 at 3:45 pm
Rod, Thompson was born in American Samoa. He, also, wore 14 with the Bucs. Forgettable times.
April 21st, 2023 at 3:55 pm
Don’t care what number he wears. He’s a great player and class representative of the team/city.
April 21st, 2023 at 4:02 pm
What he is saying is just in case something crazy happens and Brady comes back to the Bucs mid season or something he doesn’t want to give up number 12 in the middle of the season. He wants to wait until he knows there is no way he would lose the number again.
April 21st, 2023 at 4:03 pm
Because he was Samoan. He was born in American Samoa.
Thompson was the third overall pick in 1979 and backed up Ken Anderson in Cincinnati. When jackass racist Culverhouse wouldn’t re-sign Doug Williams, John McKay panicked and sent a first round pick to Cincinnati for him.
And it took the Bucs some 15 years to recover. The Bucs immediately collapsed after those two moves.

oh the excruciating pain and suffering of off season banter…
bring on the draft !
April 21st, 2023 at 4:13 pm
yes joe…
they hyped the throwin’ samoan like he was going to be the next big thing…
but the team fell flat on their face after doug’s departure, and after thompson flopped out, not even steve deberg could rescue us…
the ship was sinking and fast…
so yeah the mid to late 80’s were lean as can be
April 21st, 2023 at 4:23 pm
That’s a blast from the past. I remember giving up a lot of capital to get the Throwing Samoan. But Godwin is #1a in my book. Evans is #1 until he retires, figuratively speaking.
April 21st, 2023 at 4:42 pm
It’s hard to believe a poster who actually spends the time generating AI blog “poetry” wouldn’t take the two seconds it takes to figure out who Jack Thompson was. At least several people have filled you in now. Who knew, a quarterback nicknamed the throwin’ Samoan is actually from Samoa. That might have been a good place to start. And yes, a very ugly part of our history. Anyone who has the temerity to complain about current ownership needs to take a refresher course on the Culverhouse ownership fiasco.
April 21st, 2023 at 5:11 pm
bradys 12 should be retired.. just saying
April 21st, 2023 at 5:15 pm
Cinci already KNEW Thompson couldn’t play. They took that pick and drafted Collinsworth
April 21st, 2023 at 5:40 pm
Fun fact on Collinsworth. He came to the Gators out of HS as a QB. He owns or shares the record for longest TD pass by a Gator QB, 99 yards.
And then he converted to be one of the. Eat WRs ever.

April 21st, 2023 at 6:04 pm
Why is this even a story? Hard times!
April 21st, 2023 at 6:05 pm
I PERSONALLY THINK HE LOOKS & PLAYS GREAT IN THE #14 JERSEY WITH MIKE EVANS WEARING #13 AS OUR PRO BOWL TANDEM..LOL # 12 SHOULD BE RETIRED FOR DOUG WILLIAMS & TOM BRADY..
April 21st, 2023 at 8:29 pm
I like the 80s for receivers, not a fan of the other stuff
April 21st, 2023 at 9:18 pm
@Goatfarmer
I have to say I don’t agree with a lot of your crazy posts. I was shocked you knew that little know fact about Collinsworth. He was the top state 100 yd sprinter in the state his senior year. This was in 77/78 before meters were recognized. He always gave props to his mother for racing him to in the back yard to achieve that.
April 21st, 2023 at 11:32 pm
That is quite interesting on Jack Thompson, I knew his name, but that was about it. I vaguely remember watching the Bucs play the Cowboys in the playoffs in the early 80s – I think both times, and I seem to remember the Snow Bowl at the Packers as well, but my memory of the Bucs doesn’t really get consistent until the team drafted Vinny, that’s when I can start to remember everything quite clearly.
But for Jack Thompson, that name threw me off, I always assumed he was just your typical white guy QB from the era. I’ve heard Throwin’ Samoan before, but never assocaited it with him until just today.
The more you know… [Rainbow animation]
April 21st, 2023 at 11:44 pm
What was the justification the Bucs gave for giving up the #1 pick for Thompson. I just assumed he had some good stats with the Bengals, but I’ve never looked up anything on him. Wow, that’s a terrible terrible trade. Did Hugh get some money back under the table or something?
Imagine having the top pick overall, in back to back years, and literally having nothing to show for it – made worse by the fact if you had actually signed Bo Jackson, you’d have been able to pair him with Steve Young and actually get them playing well. What a different franchise it would have been.

Second best WR in all of football behind ME.

Coaches in the NFL should wear uniforms like they do in baseball.
Bloweszo could wear number zero.
April 22nd, 2023 at 8:27 am
@Rod
🤣
April 22nd, 2023 at 3:22 pm
Give Head Coach Toad Bowels number 0
April 22nd, 2023 at 10:37 pm
I’m a touch more interested in Godwin and his uniform number than most, it seems. Paying attention to what he said makes me hope he switches back to #12. I’m sure it isn’t constantly on his mind and in general he is as focused on the game to the maximum of his abilities. I’m also sure there are moments when he could be more comfortable in a situation just based on whether he has 12 on his jersey. Everyone who ever decided to wear red when faced with an extreme, important event or day because of the edge they believe red gives them should understand the jersey number being meaningful to Godwin.
Make Godwin 12 reality again!
Then retire it if desired. Credit every 12 seemingly deserving.
