Tristan Wirfs On Baker Mayfield: “I Think He’s A Dog”
April 17th, 2023All-Pro Buccaneers right tackle (?) Tristan Wirfs is on the Baker Mayfield bandwagon.
Wirfs reported for 2023 duty today and took question from local media. One was about his new teammate, quarterback Baker Mayfield.
“I mean, I watched Baker play when he was in college. Like, as soon has [he signed with the Bucs], everbody asked me, ‘Oh, what do you think?’ I was like, ‘I’m really excited to be his teammate. I think he’s a dog. I think he loves, you know, being a part of a team. I think he loves his teammates, and that’s what I’m really excited to experience.”
Joe was intrigued to hear the energy in laid-back Wirfs’ voice when talking about Mayfield.
Asked about the new quarterback room and competition, Wirfs didn’t mention Trask by name. Joe was hoping Wirfs might say something like, ‘Trask is a dog, too.’ That didn’t happen. Wirfs mentioned that having quarterbacks more mobile than Tom Brady should be a small positive.

Trask is not a dog. He’s like a little hamster in a tank, running on the wheel.
April 17th, 2023 at 1:26 pm
…asking the other hamsters, “is it my turn next?”

I re-watched the 4 Rams games Baker played last year.
It was a mixed bag… He looked good throwing the short to mid-range passes. Most of those passes were accurate and had nice velocity. He also looked solid with the play action passes and bootlegs.
The problems I noticed was with the longer throws. He under threw several long passes and the WR was open had to stop and come back or wait for the ball…
If the Bucs can muster a solid running game and Baker can take advantage of the play action – he might have a decent year.
However I would limit the amount of longer throws (over 30 yards).
I also noticed a few instances of bad judgement. Carson Wentz type plays… Throwing the ball when he should of taken a sack. Trying to make something happen when nothing is there…
If he just lowers his ego a little bit and becomes a better game manager we might have a chance to compete this season.

I hate that saying. “He’s a dog.”
My dog sleeps all day. He literally comes down for breakfast. Goes to the bathroom, and then returns to bed. He’s really cute and friendly, but doesn’t do anything … like most dogs.

Hopefully it doesn’t take Trask 3 years to learn this offense, we don’t have time for a slow landing qb. If they can draft trask with a second round pick I absolutely see them drafting something high like with the second pick and I honestly hope hooker is sitting there which feels impossible

Did Baker move into the stadium yet?
April 17th, 2023 at 1:43 pm
Haven’t you guys noticed that not one of our players seems to be all hyped up about Trask?
April 17th, 2023 at 1:45 pm
Not yet they are renovating the ship now for him.
April 17th, 2023 at 1:45 pm
Forget all the coach talk about him. That, right there, should tell you all you need to know about Trask. IMHO.

I blame Pat McAfee for over using the term “dog” and beating the phrase to oblivion because now everybody is a “dog” and such isn’t the case in football or any sport. Mayfield is a Corgi, that sees a Cane Corso when he looks in the mirror, but by all means let him bark.

The hamster on a wheel analogy made me think of BL.
His play calls are like a hamster running on a wheel – going nowhere fast.
Still can’t believe that an offense with Brady, Evans and Godwin we only scored 18 a game.
His favorite play call was run up the middle and hope for the best.

I’m curious, what was his response about Trask? Oh, no-one asked about Trask. What a one sided agenda driven question. What did we expect him to say? The same thing about Kyle Trask that he said about Baker Mayfield. Yep, so the jury has decided now, smh.
April 17th, 2023 at 2:39 pm
I think the issues with the long passes with the Rams was just timing with his new WRs. I would not think this would be a big issue given a full off-season with the Bucs.

Rand, one of the key founders of the Trask Suppression Conspiracy. The coaches, players, media and fans are all in on it. The government is in on it. The Russians and Chinese are in on it. Trask is simply hated and it’s so unfair.
Also, no one wants to ask about him that’s seen him these last two years. I wonder why? No one volunteers anything unprompted about him after playing with him for two years. I wonder why?
I know!!!
Because they’re all in on it together! Yeah. Keep him from playing, because…..(it’s a secret conspiracy so no one really knows)

“I think he’s a dog.”
I completely agree.

Good to hear the best player on the offense is on board for Mayfield.

@Dooley. That’s hilarious. I couldn’t agree more about the word dog. It’s a trite term. I prefer the word. I want my QB to be an Alpha. We’ve had some Alphas recently. Winston and Fitzmagic were both Alphas, and of course Brady was the ultimate Alpha. I don’t see Trask as an Alpha.
April 17th, 2023 at 4:59 pm
Baker’s been a dog with no bite. Watch out for the quiet ones.
April 17th, 2023 at 6:08 pm
Bucsfan13 – I don’t disagree, but Fat Josh Freeman wasn’t a alpha, and did quite well, until Schiano drove him to a life of drugs. That’s were not being an alpha really hurt, he got bullies by some Jersey Trash.

Lot of cheap shots at Trask. Nobody else got playing time while Brady was here and Brady was lousy last season. This year is make or break for Trask and Baker too. Big question marks for both. Trask got zero game time so who knows? And hoping a qb that got dumped elsewhere will be a savior is pre ejaculated. So far we got nothing for sure. Get real.
April 17th, 2023 at 6:55 pm
He didn’t say “dog.” He said “dawg.” Not the same.
And unless I missed something, he was not asked about Trask.
April 17th, 2023 at 8:25 pm
In LA, Baker was throwing to #3, 4, 5 and lower WR’s. No Cooper Kupp who makes any QB better. OL was playing with backups as well.

I’m baker fan let him go from start to finish he will produce!can u believe they gave hurt 255 big ones he is a bust watch & c

Baker is a loser dog that was defeated in most fights in last four years. What else do you expect Bucs players to say about him in a press conference. Tampa will regret bringing Baker. They should have brought a veteran qb to help Trask to become a starter or draft a qb to compete with him.
April 17th, 2023 at 11:15 pm
Rod – an almost nephew in law of mine played safety for Nebraska for four years and knew Failman for high school. He was a known partner in HS – as in could consume more of whatever was around and still function. Liked football, never loved it.
Schiano didn’t drive him to drugs but certainly accelerated his intake of them. He was a ticking time bomb for many reasons. My almost nephew said he was shocked by the 2010 season and saw regression to the mean thereafter.

Baker Mayfield is a 3rd Tier quarterback. All sizzle, no steak.
