Ravens Tried To Sign Baker Mayfield

March 28th, 2023

Lamar Jackson news and speculation was swirling yesterday following the Pro Bowl quarterback publicly stating he requested a trade from the Ravens, so Joe thinks it’s a good time to break this gem of a news nugget.

Last week, JoeBucsFan.com learned that new Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield got an offer in free agency from the Ravens but declined. Joe was able to confirm that late yesterday at the NFL Annual Meeting in Phoenix.

Mayfield’s focus at the time of the Ravens’ offer was on a starting opportunity. When he passed on the Ravens job, it appeared Jackson would return for his sixth season in Baltimore to build on his 45-16 record as a starter.

Jackson said on Twitter that he requested a trade March 2. If true, the Ravens move to sign Mayfield should feel awfully good to Bucs fans. The Ravens have a shrewd front office and a roster with a lot offer — as do the Bucs.

Regarding Mayfield, Joe was told by a non-Bucs team executive that Tampa Bay absolutely knocked it out of the park with the Mayfield signing. The source was admant that Mayfield at an inexpensive price for one-year is a much better value and gamble than the Saints signing Derek Carr to a monstrous three-year contract.

There are a lot of IF’s involved, but there’s a chance that Mayfield and the Bucs are good this year.

  2. Fansince76 Says:

    NFL Intrigue!
Very interesting, looks like the ravens were going to get Mayfield then trade Lamar.

  3. darengibo Says:

So what you are saying is the Bucs will now trade Baker to the Ravens for Lamar just to bring it full circle.

    Oh, and then start Trask.

  4. Voice of Truth Says:

Lamar’s 45 wins have way more to do with the organization than him alone

That D he has played with his entire career is top notch every year

The smash the ball running with a power ground game

One of the best coaching staffs in the league

He is gonna be mad when they plug in a rookie and win the same amount of games

Oh and Baker, just a one year diversion as we watch Toad Bowles walk the plank

  5. Mr. Editor Says:

If Carr and the Slimy Saints beat the Bucs, the talk about “value” will most likely fade away. The NFL is a ‘what have you done for me lately’ business, and fans and the media tend to live week to week.

  6. TheBucsAnthem Says:

…….talk about a bad deal and ownership for the Ravens

It’s no wonder Lamar Jackson wants out of Baltimore….

Besides…..Baltimore is an absolute 💯 percent dump!!!!…..crime riddled infested city!!!

  7. Kalind Says:

I smell trade bait! I’ll give you mayfield and like 2 seconds for Lamar.

  8. Fansince76 Says:

A quarter of a billion dollars guaranteed for an injury prone running QB?
    i would pass on that.

  9. gp Says:

There is a possibility that in 5 years, Lamar will no longer be playing due to an inability to walk, let alone run.

  10. Goatfarmer Says:

Lamar may have prices himself out of the game. He expects a team to fork over a quarter billion (!!!) large, multiple players and draft picks, so he can do his best DeShaun Watson imitation, while missing most of the season because he’s on IR – and when healthy enough to play in a l,any off game, he blows it off.

No way. No how. And don’t forget, if some of you are drooling formLamar to be a Buc, the Bucs head coich wears a red nose, orange tufts of hair out the side of his head, make up and a frilly collared shirt. The clown gave Tom Brady the only losing season he ever experienced in his life. Lamar’s used to real defense, not the Bloweszo mirage.

Trade for Lamar and then go 4-13. Brilliant!

    @ gp

Every fan of the NFL and every organization that’s been around the game long enough knows one thing…….MOBILE QBs GET HURT AND DON’T LAST LONG in the NFL when they used their legs alot and are used like RBs.

We all saw this coming with Lamar…..and that’s why the Ravens don’t wanna sign him to lengthy 250 Million dollar contract.

Lamar knows this will be his very last big payday because he knows his body cannot perform like it used to anymore which was Lamar Jackson’s lure to begin with.

    ————————————————————————————-
Cam Newton – decline started after his Superbowl year 2016
RGIII – -decline started in 2013
Michael Vick – decline started in 2011, but he started with injuries in 2003
    ————————————————————————————-

…………………..we can keep on going on and on and on and on about how NFL teams have used QBs who play like RBs and how it significantly impacted their careers or shortened them greatly….but that maybe a mute point to many NFL fans cause all they wanna see is their team win at whatever costs.

Lamar Jackson is no Superman, and with how protected the QBs are nowadays in this league, his outcome maybe different…..but I doubt it.

So this is the news we were waiting for? As I said to Munch last night:

So Rodney, you speculated both a Jackson deal and now a deal for A-Rod?! Or maybe you would argue with the word speculate. Whatever. You keep barking down a tree that has no fertile ground. You might as well get comfortable with Baker boy and the second round back up. With perhaps a draft pick thrown in for grins. If not certainly another low price veteran. But… Fun to talk about fantasy football I guess?

  13. BA’s Red Pen Says:

Anyone saying Lamar isn’t a good player is stupid. That being said his supposed contract demands are insane. That’s why the Bucs should be out.

  14. AtlBuc Says:

This means that the Bucs are in a good position to trade for Lamar.

  15. Buc4evr Says:

Injuries, age, salary demands, ability to make it to the playoffs?, trading away future draft picks.. nope. Hard pass.

  16. EEK Says:

Lamar seemed to have little interest in staying in Baltimore from the start of the off season

That makes the most sense given how it seems unreasonable his contract negotiations were

Won’t it be interesting if he finds an agent and works collaboratively with his next team?

There’s always more to the story

  17. Stormy Says:

Lamar’s a good player, but far from ‘highest paid qb in the league’ good. No one will give him that deal – Cleveland has met its ‘stupid qb contract’ quota and the rest of the league isn’t that dumb or desperate.

  18. Bucnjim Says:

The Ravens opened the door for Lamar to negotiate with other teams. Problem is no one is stupid enough to pay that kind of money. Now if he stays with Baltimore he will have an attitude and so will the organization. Time for him to move on and not to the Bucs.

  19. Mike Johnson Says:

Make the call Licht. Offer a 1st this year, a 2nd next yr, let them eat half the cash for Lamars salary this yr and throw in Mayfield. Jackson makes us an instant contender. The man is a triple threat. He can run, pass, and score touchdowns. Is he a risk? Sure he is. They are all risk.

  20. Just Leave Trask Alone Says:

Most INTs since he entered the league.

    We’re soooo lucky.

  21. vadertime Says:

Mayfield is cheap, stopgap insurance for the Bucs. If he works out, then great we have a solution under center. If he doesn’t work out, then it’s on to the draft next year. Either way, I think this is a win-win for the Bucs. Now, if we can only get rid of Bowles and find a semi-competent HC. Go Bucs.

  22. Rod Munch Says:

Perfect, include Mayfield in the trade for Lamar.

  23. sasquatch Says:

“but that maybe a mute point to many NFL fans”

    *moot

    🤣🤣🤣

  24. lmaouraclown Says:

Lmfao I cannot believe that some of you people leaving comments are the sperm that won out of the millions of others. You’re iq is so low. You have absolutely no football acumen or business sense whatsoever and are spouting a bunch of nonsense as if it’s absolutely factual. Basement dweller thoughts I’d imagine. Go outside, touch some grass and quit being absolutely worthless to society. 🙂
