Todd Bowles Connection Was Important To Baker Mayfield

New Buccaneers quarterback Baker Mayfield has only played with one player on the Tampa Bay roster, but he does know a coach.
And it can’t hurt that the coach is the big cheese.
Back in 2018, Todd Bowles was the head coach of the bumbling Jets with a high draft pick in hand. They were shopping for quarterbacks in a draft loaded with them.
That led to Bowles and the Jets talking to Mayfield, who eventually was the No. 1 overall selection of the Browns. The Jets took QB Sam Darnold at No. 3 overall.
Today, Mayfield passed on talking about other offers he had in free agency this season, he turned his attention to being happy to be in Tampa.
“I’m happy to be here under Coach Bowles. You know, coming out for the draft he was with the Jets. We got to know each other then. I’m happy to be finally working with him now,” Bowles said. “,,, The relationship’s great. He knows what kind of competitor I am.”
Mayfield added that he and Bowles talked briefly before a Bucs-Carolina game last season.
Joe wonders how deep of a connection was made during that draft process.
Per the New York Post, Mayfield was very confident the Jets were going to draft him and the connection was strong.

Just as I am warming up to the idea that Baker is here and likely day 1 starter so fighting it will not change that, You post Baker has some confidence or whatever in Bowels as HC…

Baker is going to have to get hurt or completely shat the bed to not be under C week 1
Trask is going to have to absolutely destroy him to get the nod
No way Bowles is banking his HOT SEAT season on Trask unless he just shows out and it is undeniable to everyone
Anything short of spectacular and Mayfield gets the nod ahead of him

Baker certainly won’t hesitate to tell Bloweszo if/when/how Bloweszo is sucking the energy out of the team, and when/how his decisions lead to losses.
He sure won’t ever have Brady’s credibility, no one will, but he won’t be scared to tell Bloweszo “We have a 4th and 1, and our defense hasn’t stopped anyone this entire half. We’re going for it.”
Brilliant move by JL to get this guy and his confidence in to follow Brady. Most would crumble under the pressure.
Baker may crater but it won’t be because he’s a petunia.

Vancouver — not a bad thing. Neither would be the unexpected and low probability result that they win. Either way, it’s necessary in the forward movement of the team, as opposed to our current Bowels Movement.
