Baker Mayfield Lauds Open Mind Of Dave Canales

When Joe sat down with new Bucs offensive coordinator Dave Canales at the NFL Scouting Combine, the message was clear: the new Bucs system would be crafted for the pieces in place — and they weren’t all there yet.
There would be no demanding to do X if the Bucs didn’t have the horses to do X.
Great coaches adjust and play to their roster’s strengths and abilities. The lesser ones stick to a system and don’t adapt.
Canales strives to be flexible, and today new Bucs quarterback Baker Mayfield praised the approach — because he’s seen how ugly a closed-minded way can be.
“How [Canales is] going to tailor the offense to his playmakers, to me that speaks volumes,” Mayfield said at one Buc Palace. “You find a lot of [coaches] that want to just run their system without really trying to play to the attributes of their players. And that’s not Dave, so I’m excited about it.”
Joe screams a hearty, “Amen!” after watching offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich seemingly be disinterested or incapable of adjusting last season.
Joe isn’t sure if Canales, a first-time coordinator, is up for the job. But at least he’s coming at it the right way.
Mayfield and the Bucs will hit the practice field for spring sessions one month from today.

Since leftwurst has not been hired by any team tells us how truly expired he really was. I sure hope that bowls of cannelloni can baker up some good plays and stay on Trask.

Baker will start. Trask will get his shot sometime during the season. Remember, its hard for a QB to stay healthy all 17 games. Hope you are ready Trask.

So Baker Mayfield lauds Dave Canales open mind. Interesting. Can’t help but wonder if Canales is ‘open’ to having a REAL QB competition to see whether Mayfield or Trask will be the starter come Game 1. And IF for some strange reason Trask should win that competition, I wonder if Mayfield would still ‘laud’ his open mind. Gut feel is that Baker’s already assuming that he’s the starter.

Canales probably knows that if he sticks to his guns and produces in spite of Bloweszo, he’ll be the head coach in 2024.

This is a valid point. It is mind blowing how many pro coaches seem to ignore their players abilities and run their playbook.
Its a good question for Bowles though – can HE be that flexible with his defense? If we have press corners, why are they routinely 20 yards off in coverage.

A quarterback competition, with a guy that is on his fourth team in two years? Makes You wonder just how many teams were competing with Tampa for Mayfield’s services? Probably about as many as are competing for Leftwiches services, What is going on here?

Keep in mind, that philosophy wasn’t just Leftwich. That came from the Arians offense. Arians believes that you can just do what you do, and the other team won’t be able to stop it.

When you have all-stars, it can when you a Super Bowl, but when teams start to figure you out and/or the talent gap isn’t so huge, you’re in trouble.

Canales is a breath of fresh air. He has the right mindset and attitude. We just haven’t seen if he has talent with the X’s and O’s to be successful.

Mark these words.now that we have baker. Conference championship then a run at the superbowl.. baker wins comeback player of the year also in the running for mvp.. we needed a quaterback who can get out of the pocket.. we have studs at every skilled position and jensen will settle whatever lineman we have.. get ready for a great season..Go Bucs!!!

Call me crazy but i have a good feeling about this. I dont expect us to win the SB but i have a feeling that we will not be the worst either. This is Baker’s last chance to prove himself, and if the draft goes well and we manage to somehow fix our OL and running game, we will still have a chance to win the south. I like Trask but i didnt see him being a QB1 this year or any other year.
