Mike Edwards Bolts To The Champs
March 17th, 2023The closest thing the Bucs have had to a turnover machine the past couple of years in the secondary is now a former Bucs player. Mike Edwards signed with the Kansas City Chiefs today.
This news comes from Jordan Schultz of @theScore.
Joe is going to guess this is what happens when your salary cap checking account is in overdraft.
The lone defensive touchdown the Bucs had last year came on an Edwards pick-six against the slimy Saints early in the season. And who can forget that touchdown-saving tackle Edwards made on a kick return against the Colts in the final minutes to save a Bucs win late in 2021? And Joe will always remember Edwards getting suspended along with bicycle-throwing, furniture-hurling Antonio Brown for giving the Bucs a phony vaccine card.
Edwards was drafted in the third round out of Kentucky in 2019 as a hybrid safety/corner and sort of played the same way with the Bucs.
Joe will miss him as he was a very intelligent dude.
FA safety Mike Edwards is signing with the #Chiefs, source tells @theScore.

I’ll miss him.
Best wishes Mike.
March 17th, 2023 at 5:55 pm
That’s two safeties gone to the AFC in the past two years. Now becomes a priority in the Draft
March 17th, 2023 at 5:56 pm
Sooo that leaves us with Winfield and who else? I guess we should bring back Sabby Piscatelli.
March 17th, 2023 at 5:58 pm
I’m interested to see what his contract looks like…
Good luck Mike Edwards – unless your playing the Bucs.
March 17th, 2023 at 6:01 pm
After signing Dean, LVD and Nelson – Safety and DT/DE are the biggest needs on defense.
Brian Branch would be a nice addition if he is still around at pick #19…
He can hopefully play FS, SS and slot corner – pair him with Winnfield and that would be a solid back end.
March 17th, 2023 at 6:03 pm
Damn, that’s another hole.
Good luck Mike, except when you play us.
March 17th, 2023 at 6:07 pm
How much is he making? We should have brought him back
March 17th, 2023 at 6:11 pm
Man !!!
One year deal only 3 million plus incentives
Damn it
March 17th, 2023 at 6:13 pm
He’s a bum he played nba2k all day.. I have him added on fb..he played it all the time during the season and was actually really bad at the game..hid team kept ducking mine and be playing late at night.
I told him to get into his playbook we see that was never a thing he did.

A Sabby the Goat reference! The original Buc Goat.
Well done Dreday.
March 17th, 2023 at 6:29 pm
If they see a nickel/FS type rotation in the draft, I wouldn’t care to draft one in round one or two. Have invested a lot into this secondary and Weinfield will be getting a fat check in the near future.
March 17th, 2023 at 6:29 pm
Whenever he had a pick 6, the Bucs were undefeated. He will be missed!
March 17th, 2023 at 6:31 pm
Real contributor. I will miss him and his ball hawking ways.
March 17th, 2023 at 6:35 pm
@ Marine Buc
Branch would be awesome. I also like Antonio Johnson from Texas A&M as a trade down target or 2nd rounder.
March 17th, 2023 at 6:36 pm
Bowles has his eye on a safety in the draft… hope he gets him.
March 17th, 2023 at 6:36 pm
Edwards was a nice rotational player, but I thought disappointed as a starter.
March 17th, 2023 at 6:36 pm
Whoah!!! I think I might pass out! Goatfarmer just said something positive.
March 17th, 2023 at 6:39 pm
The lack of activity at certain positions is pointing to the draft and then the scrap heap – like Safety, DLine, OLB, TE, T
These are going to be the weakest positions on our team and the main culprits when we win 5 or 6 games next season –
We have no SS or any backups at S, 1 capable Dlineman and we need 6, 1 OLB and a kid trying hard with an injured has been in the wings, no starting TE at NFL level sorry Cade and KO is a FB really – and 2 RT’s no LT
I love all the JL love for what he was able to scrap together but we are so far away from respectability with this junk roster it isn’t even funny
5-6 wins absolute maximum
March 17th, 2023 at 6:40 pm
He signed for 3 mil. Surprised we didn’t keep him..
March 17th, 2023 at 6:41 pm
Oh, and don’t forget the losing HC – 1 winning season in his entire career as a HC
Gosh this year is going to be painful like the Leeman Bennett days…
March 17th, 2023 at 6:42 pm
Hahahaha moderation for the truth!!!!!’
March 17th, 2023 at 6:42 pm
Hahahahahahaha
You can’t handle the truth!!!
March 17th, 2023 at 6:43 pm
On the ranked list of Buc FA’s who need to stay, Edwards was in the middle of the pack.
Sorry he’s gone, but life moves on.
March 17th, 2023 at 6:45 pm
Lotta Bucs fans having a tough time accepting that the credit card bills for the Brady era are now due.
March 17th, 2023 at 6:48 pm
Good for him!
March 17th, 2023 at 7:08 pm
A guy with talent that just really wasn’t consistent enough to be a starter here. The Chiefs seem to do pretty well with those kind of players.
March 17th, 2023 at 7:09 pm
Truth is truth. the Dline is depleted and the two jokers they drafted last two years are busts.
You can get along with the talent they have everywhere else – TE, Safety, etc… but if you don’t have a defensive line and guys that can rush the passer there is going to be big big trouble.
March 17th, 2023 at 7:27 pm
Whitehead > Edwards
March 17th, 2023 at 7:28 pm
Tanard Jackson smoking a blunt somewhere
March 17th, 2023 at 7:31 pm
I agree with Mike S that our Dline is depleted and the last two first round choices have been underwhelming. But Hall isn’t a bust yet though.
We are going to have to hope Vea stays healthy and steps up more and that Shaq is at least somewhat of the player he was.
Looking forward to Nelson shining.
March 17th, 2023 at 7:32 pm
What a shame.
March 17th, 2023 at 7:32 pm
Edwards signed for $3 mil……$5 mil with incentives….
We may sign Neal or Ryan….but we need to draft at least 1 S……
Mike Edwards was a good player….not great but good…..
We may get a 5th round comp pick for him……anyone’s guess on that is as good as mine.
March 17th, 2023 at 7:36 pm
Turnover machine until he’s a starter then you see how average he was and not worth the second contract unless on the cheap
March 17th, 2023 at 7:45 pm
$3m base, up to $5m…
Bucs could have found that money.
Either they didn’t want him or he didn’t want to stay.
We need a real SS.
March 17th, 2023 at 7:47 pm
Agreed we shoulda kept Whitehead.
March 17th, 2023 at 7:51 pm
Turnover machine? What am I missing joe?
I believe he really only had one game that he made a big impact
March 17th, 2023 at 7:52 pm
Can’t sign them all. Next guy up.
March 17th, 2023 at 7:58 pm
Stinks, but we came into this thing knowing there’d be cap casualties. Edwards played hard, followed behind AB with the fraudulence in 2020, but overall when he was available he played hard and made some big plays for us. Wish him well, until we face off with the Chiefs again.
Lowkey, I’ve been hoping we’d bring Keanu Neal back and still draft a safety. My draft “get” is JL Skinner because he’s abnormally long for a safety and lines up with Bowles favoring taller defenders in his scheme. We did sign Nolan Turner to a futures deal as well and I kind of remember him standing out on a few plays last preseason. It’ll be interesting to see how Licht & Bowles address losing Edwards, also possible they knew he wasn’t part of the plan in 2023. Might be the same for SMB.
March 17th, 2023 at 8:00 pm
Edwards had a great 2021 with multiple ints, while not being a starter, which is why I thought he was going to be fine replacing Jordan Whitehead. Boy, was I wrong.
Edwards had a down year, regressed and was not better than Whitehead. Our defense showed last year that Whitehead really was a key piece all along.
March 17th, 2023 at 8:04 pm
SB, way to be a smartazz.
My major negativity is with Bloweszo the head coich. He’s still coiching, therefore I’ve got plenty left to say about him.
Now that we have an experienced starting QB with a playoff win under his belt, I have less reason to be negative about #2. Since Leftwurst was fired, he’s not here to biotch about anymore.
Licht brought LVD back. That was awesome, and Dean.
So right now I’m pretty happy, but now that you brought it up, I’m sure I can find a few thousand words to describe my feelings for Bloweszo.
If the comment about Edwards made you pass out, change your meds.
March 17th, 2023 at 9:16 pm
They obviously saw this coming with the dean signing. Lots of money tied up into the secondary already. Edwards is ultimately replaceable. Guys like dean and Davis aren’t. I liked Edwards, but safety is a position more easily replaceable. Good luck. The chiefs are a top flight program and he should excel there. Top flight in everything but their facilities and travel rating. That shouldn’t be much of a culture shock coming from here. The weather is another animal. Pack your long johns Mike
March 17th, 2023 at 9:44 pm
Sorry to see him go, he was the most versatile of out DBs. He could play safety, cover, and nickel. That makes him the hardest to replace.
Wish him luck though, maybe he just has a taste for Stupor Bowl rings and feels KC is closer than the Bucs.
March 17th, 2023 at 9:58 pm
Time to get serious about signing Logan Ryan. We do not want to go into the draft having to get a SS. That’s when you inevitably reach.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:06 pm
Honestly I’d prefer a better tacking safety that played more consistently than Edwards.Definitely a flashy player but that’s about it.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:08 pm
Happy St Pat’s day to my fellow Irish
March 17th, 2023 at 10:17 pm
I figured somebody would overpay for him. He has a back up who plays well when given the opportunity, but is not consistent enough to be a starter. I wouldn’t be surprised if they keep Neal and draft a safety in the first three rounds. They still need OL & DL in the first 3 rounds as well. I expected a wide receiver, who is young and speedy and fast and quick but that might be relegated to round 4 now.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:59 pm
Decent backup. Had one nice strech in his career, but when he got more playing time because of injuries, he didn’t really show anything and basically disappeared. I don’t know what he got money wise, but I assume it’s pretty low. Would have been nice to keep him as a backup, but oh well.

———-
Yeah, the team needs a slow, oft injured 32 year old defensive back who is on a very very very quick decline…
Uh, no thanks.
What is the deal with this guy being popular? He stunk last year when he wasn’t injured, and he came here after getting cut by a terrible Giants defense. Last year on multiple TDs the WR’s ran right past him.
March 17th, 2023 at 11:02 pm
Please sign Keanu Neal. Way better than Edwards
March 17th, 2023 at 11:13 pm
Naw, we will regret this one. That was a big talent ceiling guy.
March 17th, 2023 at 11:20 pm
Buccos Says:
March 17th, 2023 at 11:02 pm

———
LOL! Talk about an even worse take than wanting Logan back. WOW.
Yes, I know Neal made one nice tackle last year, but did you watch anything else? Like how every single TE, and WR and RB ran right past him? He was terrible in coverage. People complain about White in coverage, well White is Derrick Brooks + Lavonte David + Ronde Barber in coverage compared to Neal. I think at this point I might be faster than Neal, and that’s assuming I lost both my legs to monkeypox.
March 18th, 2023 at 12:45 am
He should be re-paid the game checks that were wrongfully stolen from him plus interest. He was right, they were wrong.
Dudes a ball hawk. Great signing by the chiefs. Good for him. We’ll get a great comp pick for him. Leave the Licht on!
March 18th, 2023 at 2:17 am
Why do the Bucs never resign the good team guys?
Mike is a keepah.
KC knows that all to well.
March 18th, 2023 at 2:36 am
64 INTs in 72 games Goat. In case you were wondering that’s not good.
March 18th, 2023 at 6:37 am
I liked Edwards for his timely Int’s. He will be missed. We lost some of our versatility. IMO, we now have two holes to fill since
we have often played three safeties at once to cover the lack of a good slot corner.
March 18th, 2023 at 7:51 am
“Edwards had a down year, regressed and was not better than Whitehead. Our defense showed last year that Whitehead really was a key piece all along.”
Hmmm
Jordan Whitehead 2022 NYJ:
17 games, 89 total tackles, 4TFLS, 0 sacks, 2 INTs for 5 yards
Mike Edwards 2022 TBB:
13 games, 82 total tackles, 3TFLS, 1 sack, 2 INTs for 66 yards and a TD
Edwards had 1 less INT in 2022 than he had the year before, scored 1 less defensive TD in 2022 than he did in 2021, but hit a career high in tackles playing in 1 less game in 2022 than he did in 2022. All while being rotated with 2-3 other players at safety. Where’s the “regression”? How much better did Jordan Whitehead play than Edwards did last season?
March 18th, 2023 at 8:41 am
After the vaccine fraud I didn’t have much regard for him, good riddance. Nice example for our kids. Let some other community have to deal with him.
March 18th, 2023 at 11:23 am
Who says… In retrospect he seems kind of smart huh?
March 18th, 2023 at 11:30 am
You knew when Neal was on the field. Hardest hitter on the team. Better make sure your chin strap is buckled
March 18th, 2023 at 2:25 pm
Will we get a compensation pick for him?
March 18th, 2023 at 3:41 pm
Bucs Draft S, OT, DL, Edge, WR, Depth … and only a QB away
March 18th, 2023 at 4:23 pm
We might consider Edwards a cap hit loss. He left for a one-year deal with the Chiefs.
The safeties most often touted in this draft seem to be Antonio Johnson, Jartavious Martin and Brian Branch. All are praised for being able to play well in the slot. Johnson and Martin are noted more as ball hawks than Branch but he is typically rated as the top prospect.
