Fear Factor Removed With Baker Mayfield
March 17th, 2023The more Joe listens, the more Joe hears a consensus among former quarterbacks that new Bucs QB Baker Mayfield is a legitimate starter with a solid ceiling.
Nobody’s calling Mayfield a Pro Bowler, but there’s appreciation for the total package of arm talent, improvisational ability, heart and leadership, in addition to Mayfield guiding the Browns out of the NFL dungeon.
Former NFL MVP quarterback Rich Gannon spoke on SiriusXM NFL Radio this week and reflected on how so many times he has sat down in meetings with offensive staffs in pre-broadcast meetings for CBS and listened to them talk about how they’re rolling with a backup or young quarterback. That’s where the chatter turns to how “there’s a backup plan in place,” as in panic moves to scaling back the offense, limiting the playbook or needing to run 30 times to protect their quarterback.
That’s not necessary with Mayfield, Gannon said, because he’s just good enough to do it all. That brings a great comfort level for Bucs coaches and makes Mayfield an excellent signing.
Gannon says Bucs coaches won’t panic with Mayfield and he’s done just enough in the NFL to command the respect of Bucs receivers and the huddle from Day 1.
Mayfield has “physical limitations,” Gannon said, and he feels like a “stop-gap,” but is good enough to lead a team to a winning record.
Joe is eager to see what the Mayfield experience is like from all angles. But Joe actually is a little queasy from Gannon’s take. Joe doesn’t want a QB only good enough to find the Bucs eight or nine wins. That’s a great way to be unsatisfied for years.
March 17th, 2023 at 12:16 pm
Joe Montana was a skinny 6’1″ QB. There are no physical limitations. If he can get the ball deep to Evans and hit Godwin and Gage on crossers, we’ll be in good hands for years.
March 17th, 2023 at 12:17 pm
Soon….it will be Super Bowl Run with Mayfield…happens every year witgh every team. They are all gonna win it…..until the season starts and the grim reality sets in. I do not think Mayfield will take us to the promised land. 8 wins is a pipe dream.
March 17th, 2023 at 12:18 pm
Thats all Brady got last year if Mayfield got 8 or 9 wins he should be in line for league MVP.
March 17th, 2023 at 12:20 pm
Baker might be an upgrade over last years Brady. He will at least hold onto the ball long enough for routes to develop. One would hope….
March 17th, 2023 at 12:21 pm
Yeah take the under. Gannon must be projecting cuz he’s been terrible so far
March 17th, 2023 at 12:22 pm
Well Mayfield is on a one year deal, Trask is on year 3 of a 4 year rookie deal, and that is justification to draft a QB right now in 2023, not 2024. Even if we did wait til the 2024 draft to add a rookie QB, it better be Michael Pennix Jr. For 2023, if we can’t get in range for Hooker, get me DTR, if not him go get me Devon Thompkins’ old QB in Logan Bonner who has a 6th round grade. Plenty of paths in one season to find our future QB.
March 17th, 2023 at 12:28 pm
Agreed that He will be able to hold on to the ball longer than Brady did in Season 3. His scrambling and ability to improvise will help with the receivers and route running. As we all do, certainly hope it translates into Wins.
March 17th, 2023 at 12:29 pm
I’ll take 9 wins if it continuously gets us in the playoffs because of our division and a chance to slide into the SB. Better in than out. It would be nice to have some optimism over here without the negative undertones in damn near every article. Where is your pushback writer? Or someone who brings a fresh take to your articles without mentioning the same “the lost decade’, “the Mike Smith era”, “Mike Glennon” spiel over and over again. Dude that stuff is dust particles and a wrapped mummy at this point. Enough boo-boo sauce. Let’s get it together over here. Sheesh.
March 17th, 2023 at 12:30 pm
I am more interested in the fact that he and Trask can battle it out. And whomever wins can stay healty. Competition will only help our situation.
Both Mayfield and Trask will benefit from having solid receivers, hopefully a decent running game and an O Line that could be great with the addition of a young , quick, 1st round LT.
March 17th, 2023 at 12:34 pm
Mayfields already won the job according to diarrhea mouth Bowles. Thats what he was promised.
March 17th, 2023 at 12:41 pm
I believe Baker Mayfield is the same size as Jeff Garcia who played for SF and then briefly for the Bucs and had a very solid career.
March 17th, 2023 at 12:42 pm
lol
March 17th, 2023 at 12:52 pm
There is little question in my mind that Mayfield is at least as good as last year’s Brady……
Can we improve our running game…..
March 17th, 2023 at 12:54 pm
Who the hell was Brad Johnson when we got him? Yes, he had a better record than Mayfield does, but it wasn’t like he was some incoming MVP.
March 17th, 2023 at 12:56 pm
I would say this is the most stable team and one of the better rosters Mayfield has been a part of. That alone leads me to be optimistic and excited to see how it plays out.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:02 pm
Everyone hating on Mayfield I’m just curious , who did you want at QB that we could’ve afforded this year? And please don’t say Trask because if he was any good he would’ve been 2nd string last year so please spare that bull.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:04 pm
We’ve got a lot of holes to fill.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:04 pm
I didn’t hear about any of these “physical limitations” when he was drafted #1 overall, went 11-5, and won a playoff game. With the toilet water Browns.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:05 pm
Bottom line is Mayfield gives us the best chance to win this year with what we could afford. Tbh we don’t need him to be Brady just take care of the ball and let the defense do what it does. If Bowles can win 10 games for the garbage Jets with Fitzpatrick he can do it with our Bucs and Mayfield. Go Bucs!
March 17th, 2023 at 1:08 pm
Baker needs great coaching. I’m not quite so sure we have that. The injury risk is also quite high. He always seems to be dinged up. When he’s played hurt, he’s been a liability. Something to be said for playing hurt, but if you can’t perform, it’s better to tell the coaches and sit. He will be the starter. I have little doubt. I do like the deal and the possibilities. My only hope is he shuts that piehole of his and just plays football. Guess we’ll see. I absolutely think they can win the south with him. Beyond that, one and done.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:09 pm
I firmly believe the greatest force against any success the Bucs could have is not Baker Mayfield BUT Todd Bowels… Todd’s ego and ancient coaching turned basically the same team from one of the highest scoring to struggling to score…
NOT even Tom Brady could win many games.. The only losing season in Brady’s 20+ year career was because Todd wanted to do it his way instead of the proven WINNING way!
March 17th, 2023 at 1:09 pm
If the Yucs want to do something that would help the team TRADE for JONAH WILLIAMS who they wanted in the 2019 draft, but would solidly the left side !!! Jason pull it off and make a signing for once that makes sense !!!!!
March 17th, 2023 at 1:11 pm
@joebucsfan why are you not pushing Jonah Williams coming to the YUCS and solidifying the left side replacing D Smith !!! We wanted him in 2019 ??? Push the story brother
March 17th, 2023 at 1:12 pm
Baker Mayfield at his best is still only ranked #15-20 in the NFL.
If he plays well and we have a top 10 defense the Bucs will have a solid team next year…
If Trask wins the starting QB job then Mayfield will be one of the best backups in the league and we are only paying him $4M.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:12 pm
@Dick Lebeau,
You must be new here… lol.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:14 pm
Joe how are you not pushing for this ??!
March 17th, 2023 at 1:15 pm
I want Gannon to say he is too short. He says he has arm talent and can keep plays alive. All why he went 1 in ddraft. But then says physical limitations. It can only be Gannon thinks he is too short to throw consistently in the pocket.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:16 pm
@marinebuc if you don’t have a line to protect the Qb what’s the point ?? Trade a 4th or 5th for a guy they wanted in 2019 JONAH WILLIAMS that will protect the left side
March 17th, 2023 at 1:21 pm
Mayfield, at the moment, makes being a Bucs fan a lot more interesting.
I would consider him a slight upgrade over Gabbert, but not by much.
If a real competition happens it will do the whole team good, so let it happen and throw the best team on the field for us to enjoy.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:21 pm
If Mayfield was so coveted then why is he not in Cleveland? You say Carolina sat him down because they wanted to tank but what made Carolina decide to tank in the first place? Was it because they were already losing games with Mayfield? If he were so good in L.A. then why did he only win one game and why didn’t L.A. retain him with Stafford’s career on ice. It wasn’t because of the money. This guy proves he worthless but continues to get chances. Trask should ask to be traded.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:28 pm
If Jonah Williams is the answer at LT, how in the world would he be acquired for a 4th or 5th round draft choice?
Some posters would be perfect candidates formthe sequel to Simple Jack.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:30 pm
Rand must know absolutely nothing about the Browns to say something like that.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:30 pm
@Craig
That’s all I’ve been saying, these NFL teams don’t operate year to year like fans think and alot of the more consistently good/successful franchises know if you think short term you get short term results. Why wait til 2024 for a QB, when we’re literally 2 days into the new league year.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:32 pm
Way more confident on Baker Mayfield that a quarterback with less than 15 minutes of NFL starting experience.
Trask will be just fine as a backup quarterback if needed.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:35 pm

March 17th, 2023 at 1:36 pm
“Trask should ask to be traded.”
BWWAAAAAHAAAAHAHAHAAAAHAHAHAHAAAAAAAAAA.
That would require someone to want him and be willing to cough up some value for him. If Trask were the answer, fanboi, the Bucs would have signed Trevor Simean or Chase Daniel to “compete” with your love. This may be tough to swallow for you, but the coaches and management have seen enough of #2’s speed of smell field action processing and him always slow on the uptake. The decision is in. You’re boy will hold a clipboard, and if he’s skilled and doesn’t fumble, maybe some day he can be as good as Glennon.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:40 pm
Jeff Garcia made 4 Pro Bowls and he is the same size as Baker Mayfield. Jon Gruden also compared Baker Mayfield to Jeff Garcia so I think we need to be patient and let things develop.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:41 pm
Tye, I agree in half. Bowles, the HC will certainly not be any help to baker. But baker has done his own share of screwing things up. If he just plays football and get himself into the best shape possible (mentally and physically) they should have a chance at the division.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:42 pm
Jonah Williams gave up 12 sacks tied for the league lead NO THANKS!
March 17th, 2023 at 1:47 pm
Hey Rob – if memory serves me, Gruden ended up hating Garcia. Now, I love Chucky, but he hated most quarterbacks. If Griese didn’t get injured in 2008, Chucky might still be here and that email gate might never have happened.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:51 pm
I don’t know, his 4th team in 12 months seems like a bit of a red flag to me.
BUT, I do have some good news. Donovan Smith hasn’t signed anywhere yet, maybe the Bucs can bring him back on a cheap ‘prove it’ deal!
March 17th, 2023 at 1:52 pm
Craig … ‘If a real competition happens it will do the whole team good, so let it happen and throw the best team on the field for us to enjoy.’
Agree wholeheartedly. Folks talk about Mayfield’s scrambling capability, but I’m seeing some conflicting stats that bring the effectiveness of his scrambling into question (completion percentage of 60% over his last 2 years for one thing). Not particularly fast either (Combine time of 4.84 secs in the 40). On the good news side though, he did win the Heisman, was drafted #1 in 2018, and does have starting experience.
Of course, Trask is one big unknown because he’s warmed the bench for 2 years. He’s the same size as Josh Allen (6’5″ & 236 lbs) so maybe he’ll be as tough to bring down as Allen is. Supposedly threw a pretty good deep ball in college, and that’s kinda what WRs like Mike Evans can thrive on. He was in the Final-4 for the Heisman balloting in 2020, so he can’t be all that bad.
In any event, they’re both ‘inexpensive options’ for 2023 and that’s all we can afford. Just saw Mayfield’s contract BTW: $2 mil base (fully guaranteed); $2 mil roster bonus (due this month); $4.5 mil in playtime, stat & playoff incentives.
March 17th, 2023 at 1:55 pm
If you wanna make it personal goatfckr we can. Lay off the sauce a little
March 17th, 2023 at 1:57 pm
Rod … ‘maybe the Bucs can bring him (Donovan Smith) back on a cheap ‘prove it’ deal!
For one thing Rod, Donovan has nothing to prove to the Bucs. We know exactly who he is. For another though, he’s already making a boatload of money from the Bucs for this year. But more importantly, his Market Value is listed at $19.5 mil. He’s got plenty of time to wait it out, so no reason to work for chump change.
March 17th, 2023 at 2:02 pm
College results are not a good predictor of NFL success. Especially for quarterbacks. Trotting out #2’s college stats when he was throwing to Pitts, Toney, and other NFL level players against mostly inferior competition, is like expecting any of the long laundry list of guys like Manziel, Tebow, Vince Young, Jamarcus Russell, Josh Rosen, San Bradford, etcetera ad nauseum.
When Licht or a coach are forced to try and say something nice about #2, it’s always about his work ethic. Crickets about his actual performance.
Your answer on #2 is in.
March 17th, 2023 at 2:06 pm
^^^exactly DR, plus the Knicks have been playing pretty good basketball lately Donnie is probably busy hollering “bing-bong” at a tv somewhere every time Julius Randle hits and/misses a 3pt shot lol
March 17th, 2023 at 2:06 pm
I plan on 0-17 with the Bowles/Mayfield Combo this year. If they win a game or 2 that will be an event. I mean what could be worse the the Bowles Mayfield Buccaneers? For old times sake I hope we play the Bears, Packers, Lions, at home with Arizona as a kicker. The Black and Blue plus the cardinals. 3rd qtr tailgates, cheap tix in the parking lot.
March 17th, 2023 at 2:06 pm
Sand castles
March 17th, 2023 at 2:08 pm
Defense Rules – As you said, he’s already getting paid, that’s why the Bucs should be able to bring him back on a veteran’s minimum deal. Everyone loves playing for Todd Bowles, and who wouldn’t want to play with a #1 overall pick! It should be an easy sell job.
March 17th, 2023 at 2:11 pm
True, if we are always floating around .500 we won’t be able to get a marquis QB or be good enough to win a Superbowl. Best case scenario (which has low probability) is either Mayfield or Trask somehow are amazing…
March 17th, 2023 at 2:20 pm
The problem with Trask, again, is that he has had to relearn how to throw the ball. That’s a very long and slow process. Those rainbow passes do not work in the NFL as defenders are too fast and recover to make those passes either breakups or turnovers. To Trask’s credit, in the limited snaps we’ve seen him, he’s improved in driving the ball … sometimes. And that’s why he’s been buried on the depth chart. When he’s been under pressure he reverts back to those soft slowballs, and no coach is going to let a guy like that play.
Trask is an oddball in that he has the size that NFL GM’s all want, and he can technically throw a great looking deep ball. But just go watch 45-year old Tom Brady throwing a 60-yard bomb last year, then go back and watch Trask in college doing the same thing – you will see Trask’s balls hang in the air, that is his entire problem. Generally guys who throw like that (Danny Wuerffel is always going to be my example) don’t have strong arms, and the balls hang because they don’t have the power to drive the ball. Trask doesn’t have that issue, in terms of arm strength, yet he still throws that way. That’s why a guy with top 10 talent slipped to the last pick of the 2nd round, because he’s had to learn how to throw an NFL ball.
All the low-IQ low-T trask fanbois are too stupid to understand what I’m saying, but anyone who has watched all these pinpoint accurate college QBs flop in the NFL do know what I’m saying.
But that’s also why I hate signing Mayfield. Baker might win an extra game or two, but he’s not the guy, so why is he here? I’d much rather have seen Trask have a year to figure it out, to see if he can improve. Trask needs reps if he’s to have any chance at not being a bust, and now you just handed the starting job to a guy who is going to win, at most, 6 games. What’s the point of that? To be clear, I don’t think Trask can overcome his issues, but with him you at least have a chance that he figures it out, and now you got something exciting. With Mayfield it’s going to be awful local low budget commercials of him living in the pirate ship in the stadium and idiots thinking it’s really funny.
March 17th, 2023 at 2:27 pm
Mike Evans will be traded and everyone will be happy.
The Bucs with the pick
ME to get out of this train wreck
and the team getting him
March 17th, 2023 at 2:29 pm
Fear Factor is through the ceiling. We have no idea how Mayfield is going to perform or for that matter Trask. If we go by past history, I am not sure how anyone would not be concerned about our QB situation. If anything sinks the Bucs this season it will be the QB.
March 17th, 2023 at 2:31 pm
Ummmmm upgrade over Brady Not!!!!!!!—-.
March 17th, 2023 at 2:32 pm
SB~LV has gotta be constantly drunk or high or both
March 17th, 2023 at 2:46 pm
@ Yucs
Jonah Williams will cost $12.6M and he gave up an NFL high 12 sacks last season.
Plus – he just had knee surgery in Feb…
I will pass.
D. Smith only gave up 7 sacks and we fired him.
I believe the Bucs will probably draft an OT in round #1 or #2.
March 17th, 2023 at 2:47 pm
when Baker improvises–that’s when the Int’s come… Bowles will not like it because his defense will get too tired ..
March 17th, 2023 at 2:48 pm
Mayfield is a better NFL QB than Bowles is an NFL HC.
March 17th, 2023 at 2:48 pm
Nothing personal Rand. Although apparently you take facts that contradict your fantasies personally. Lay off the hallucinogens.
March 17th, 2023 at 3:02 pm
@Rod Munch , is it possible for you be any more of a hater ? Your shtick is exhausting.
March 17th, 2023 at 3:24 pm
Rod is 100 percent correct. They have had to entirety rebuild his delivery and throwing motion. That isnt so easy to do with a player who’s been throwing his way since high school. My guess is Trask can’t or hasn’t been able to speed up his delivery. That means wasted motion and late throws, which equal picks. The Packers had to do the same thing with Rodgers. Had he played right away, it would’ve looked bad. It’s easy to hit wide open windows in collage. Tim Tebow is a perfect example of a guy who couldn’t make the jump. In the NFL the windows are incredibly tight. So much so, that very few can consistently be accurate enough to survive.
March 17th, 2023 at 3:34 pm
Is there any chance of getting the disgruntled left tackle from the bungels
March 17th, 2023 at 3:46 pm
Marine Buc … ‘I believe the Bucs will probably draft an OT in round #1 or #2.’
Agreed, but I think it’ll probably be in Rnd 2. My guess is that JL will use Rnd 1 to pick the BPA who fills a NEED (which is just about every position group). If I had to guess, I’d say CB or DE/OLB. Remember he got Donovan, Ali & Goedeke in Rnd 2, plus Cappa & Hainsey in Rnd 3. Using the 1st Rnd pick on Wirfs was a no-brainer (except for the 12 GMs who passed him by before JL drafted him).
March 17th, 2023 at 4:08 pm
Donnie is better than the disgruntled left tackle from the bungles
March 17th, 2023 at 4:11 pm
Ummmm
Bag holder
Going be a 5 alarm dumpster fire
March 17th, 2023 at 4:27 pm
@ DR
Your probably right.
We need D-lineman just as bad. Bringing back Dean lowered the chances of CB in round #1 but I like that safety Branch from Bama – very versatile and Bowles likes those types…
March 17th, 2023 at 4:36 pm
Bucs were 8-9 with Tom Brady who threw for 4600 yards and 25 TDs
Joe thinks Bucs will be the same with Mayfield?
This time of year is fantastic. We’re more delusional than Cowboys fans.
This is getting absurd.
March 17th, 2023 at 4:37 pm
BAKER MAYFIELD IS NOT THE ANSWER WAKE UP
March 17th, 2023 at 4:43 pm
For all you crybaby Trask-Haters that claim he has sucked in practice and couldn’t beat out Gabbert, yadda yadda yadda…
If he were so bad he would be CUT. The Bucs would save the cap space and get rid of him. It’s just that simple.
As a 2nd round pick, Trask deserves a chance to practice and play with the starters so we can see what he can do.
March 17th, 2023 at 4:49 pm
VJ Groper, you add exactly zero to the conversation. Every time. Quite a (lack of) talent.
March 17th, 2023 at 4:54 pm
@Trask to the future, they don’t cut second round picks on a whim. The GM needs to justify the pick and will be given all opportunities to do so. You apparently don’t understand how the league works. I’m no Baker fan, but he’s probably miles ahead of where Trask is. It always a competition in the NFL. And yes, he couldn’t beat out Gabby for the backup job. Thats not conjecture but fact
March 17th, 2023 at 4:59 pm
Goat you’re the one who is high.
March 17th, 2023 at 4:59 pm
Redeemer its going to be Trask before this is over.
March 17th, 2023 at 5:02 pm
I like how I’m literally saying I wish the team didn’t sign Mayfield because I want to see what we have in Trask, and these idiot Florida fanbois say I’m a ‘hater’. It’s remarkable how stupid these people are.
March 17th, 2023 at 5:16 pm
Other than college performance (which we all know is a poor predictor of NFL success), what has Trask done that gives the nuthuggers the deranged belief that he’s a starting NFL QB?
Rod Munch gave a very objective clinical explanation of why Trask holds the clipboard as a 3rd stringer after 2 full seasons. This isn’t hate, this is objectivity. Big difference. His open windows have gone from 5 yards plus to 5 inches. If he can’t drive the ball, he’ll drive the clipboard instead.

March 17th, 2023 at 5:29 pm
The tape just doesn’t show that about Trask as much as you want it to. Go watch the preseason game against Miami again.
Personally – year after the goat leaves with a team under Bowles – I’m not expecting much. They say they’re going to compete – nobody thinks they are not even Bucs fans. This is developmental tank year. The best plan is for the Bucs to give the ball to Trask and get his regular season experience. We win 4-6 games and it won’t be the end of the world.
We’ll all find out if Trask is the guy. If he is – great – if not we have the draft capital to go get a guy.
Problem is the front office blew up that plan by signing Mayfield. “We’re going to win now! The division is attainable!”
Now the experience that Trask needs to be a player in the league will be given to Mayfield who just doesn’t throw for a lot of yards despite this mountain of hype.
This isn’t about doing what’s best for the long term – its about trying to save Bowles’ job – which is utterly futile. We all saw what we saw last season. Unless the coaching acumen takes a quantum leap we’re in for more of the same.
March 17th, 2023 at 5:29 pm
Seems everyone was ready for life after Brady except fans. What were the best options out there in free agency that would have gave fans a different outlook about this team in 2023? There was nothing available except journeymen guys. Take your lumps and hope trask is who you thought he was. This team is not bad enough to end up with the first overall pick
March 17th, 2023 at 5:32 pm
Guys it isn’t so much about driving the football, but anticipation. Plenty of QBs have thrived in the NFL because they could throw recievers open. I will admit, it’s hard way to play. That internal clock needs to be elite in order to succeed at this level. Trask was drafted with the expectation that he’d be the unquestioned starter by this point. The Brady experiment was only going to last three years at best. Why you people are trying to turn Trask into the second coming, when there’s plenty of evidence he cant grasp, or throw an NFL football or offense, is beyond me. Like GF and Rod have mentioned, this is called objectivity, not fanboyism.
March 17th, 2023 at 5:44 pm
Mike Edwards to the Chiefs for 1 year $3 millions deal. We could have done that.
March 17th, 2023 at 5:48 pm
@ Trask To The Bench
As a second round pick, Trask deserves jack squat. You deserve what you earn; nothing more.
WE don’t need to see Trask. The coaches already have and instead of ‘rolling with Trask’, apparently he is lacking certain features and options that would have solidified his position moving forward.
QB1 is Mayfield. QB2 is where the competition will be. I wish Trask luck with that.
March 17th, 2023 at 5:49 pm
I’ll bet they see what they have in Trask by week 9.
March 17th, 2023 at 5:59 pm
So, Mike S knows more than the coaches and managers who have been intimately involved with Trask’s performance every day for two years. He should send his suggestion in – “Just throw Trask out there so his fanbois can see what he can do. “. Apply to Jason Licht to see if you can be appointed to the pro personnel group. That’s the kind of thing they look for on a resume’ for sure.
Of course coaches and management already have evaluated him for that and decided Baker gives the team a much better chance to,win. They’ve “thrown him out there” every day for two years. Real games are even harder than practice. He apparently has underwhelmed everyone. “Works hard” though. “Studies hard.”
Just doesn’t play well enough to get the clipboard out of his hands.

As of right now, my 2 biggest priority targets that we actually have a shot of landing are:
#1. Jonah Williams T Alabama – 6’5 301 Big Bodied tackle with pretty damn good but not elite feet but packs an immensely powerful punch and has grizzly bear strength in his hands. Is a naturally gifted athlete in space and does a great job pulling/ knowing when to stop blocking his man and get to the second level and make blocks downfield. Right now to me he projects as a Right Tackle because he is a body mover in the running game but also can 100 percent hold his own in Pass pro. This would be a tremendous pick because replacing Demar Dotson is a MUST!
Or
#2 Andreaz “Greedy” Williams CB LSU – 6’3 183 2 words. Ball. Hawk. Greedy Williams is unquestionably the best Corner in this entire draft. He is lanky with really long arms for the posistion, has elite feet, elite agility/ change of direction, can mirror #1 receivers routes, is a willing tackler despite his skinny as a rail frame, and most importantly. He has the instincts to get his mitts on the Football. Be it swatting away a pass 10 feet in the air, or Mossing the receiver he’s covering and making it look effortless, he can do it all. And we would benefit quite a lot from him being here.

Greedy or Jonah, either fix up our DBs or fix up our O-line.

Greedy Williams, Jonah Williams, Greg Little, Ed Oliver are in play.
Glad the GM took Devin White and SMB in 2019 and then waited to 2020 to take Tristen Wirfs.

Again we’ve gone over and over reasons why Trask had to park as the 3rd string and it started with Brady.
All I’m hearing out of the coaches and front office are positive things about Trask and his real opportunity starts now. Coaches this coaches that – just made up nonsense.
Look we all know you Trask haters have some weird axe to grind here. Its beyond question at this point. You want to bury the kid before he even gets on their field this season. Its bizarre. Its almost like you aren’t actually fans of this team and want to cause trouble. How can you root against the kid?
This is all meaningless conjecture. What you and I say on this message board is utterly meaningless. Its going to be about who shows up for offseason workouts. Who shows up for OTAs. Who shines in camp. Who puts the best film in preseason.
$4 million plus incentives is a guarantee of nothing. Backups have signed for more than that elsewhere – Drew Lock got nearly the same deal. Come on.
Take a good look at the Mayfield 2022 body of work. You’re writing it in stone based on that? Its completely ridiculous. Its just not a credible opinion.
You actually think the Baker Mayfield-Todd Bowles QB-HC combination is anything to write home about? Its laughable.

Traskbois be about to have a supreme letdown, take all the excuses for him as fact, and interpret the “nice things” they say about him as positive. Not once has anybody said, “He really ran the offense well” or “he was throwing dines today” or “he’s got a cannon for an arm” or “really fit it in some tight windows today.”
Plenty of “hard worker” accolades. What do you want them to say about their 2nd round pick? He sucks? They’re not going to say that even though they know it by now. No point to that.
March 17th, 2023 at 6:53 pm
I just know what I see and what I’m seeing doesn’t match the ish you’re talking.
Giving you the benefit of the doubt here you just like Mayfield because he’s a name. That’s the beginning and the end of it. You want a name. A name doesn’t win you games on its own. Baker had his chance now he signs for backup money. Some name.
The logical thing to do here is plan Trask and make Baker push him. If Trask is not up to the task then you let Baker try to give you a spark – see if you can catch lightning in a bottle.
Either way I think the point is moot. Bowles really was terrible last year. You think the Bucs were prepared for the Cowboys? They were practically already heading for the bus by the end of the 1st quarter. It was an embarrassment – and it wasn’t the only one we saw last year. Our defense got schooled by Trubisky. Couldn’t get the ball back. They got throttled by KC, SF, Balt & Cinn. What a joke. What do you think is going to happen year two with a younger team? Its makes all the sense in the world to develop your young draft QB while this plays out.
But noooo. Got to fall in love with a name.

Interesting… some say, our wise coaching staff watched Trask for 2 years and determined he won’t make it in the NFL… and yet also, complain our coaching staff was so dumb in 2022, they caused Brady and the team to fail. Good luck to Baker.

People see what they want to see, especially Trask Fanbois. The hallucinogens are strong in this thread.
March 17th, 2023 at 8:16 pm
BucaneroJim – the new guy Canales runs the offense now, and you might know a quarterback plays offense. So the new guy makes the call on Baker and Bowels saw enough of #2 for him to support the call. Oh, and those guys get paid to do what they do, although Bloweszo should give the Glazers their money back. We post here for free. Unless you pay the Joes for extra authority or something.

We gon” suk next year
March 17th, 2023 at 10:36 pm
I think Bakers problem has been he is just maturing late and just now starting to learn how to come into a situation humble and ready to take his career seriously. After seeing the turnaround with Geno Smith last season this has the potential to be huge. Not going to get over excited but very intrigued to watch and see what happens. I believe light and Arians will have a solid draft as they have proven to be capable of orchestrating and no reason to think this isn’t an NFL south winner with only noodle arm carr to compete with.
March 17th, 2023 at 10:57 pm
Three reasons:
1. Greg Gabriel, former Bears scouting director, said he was awful last year.
2. Bengals just spent major, major money to replace him. Teams generally don’t do that for good players. 🤔
3. He’s damaged goods.
March 17th, 2023 at 11:02 pm
I think that Kyle Trask is not going to be a franchise quarterback. I think he’s headed to a career of being a backup
The only thing that makes me question that is that Todd Bowles is the one who is basically saying this, and Todd Bowles could tell me that the sun rises in the east and I would want to double check it.
Every franchise who needed a quarterback determined that Baker Mayfield was not QB1 material this offseason.
The Bucs, because of their salary cap situation, were like a 2 at a nightclub at closing time wishing that a 5 like Baker Mayfield chooses them because their judgement is greatly impaired.
I’m in the camp that thinks that Baker is not QB1 and who also thinks Trask isn’t the answer. This means that the Bucs are not going to be successful this year as you need good quarterback play to win in the modern NFL.
The Bucs will play Saints twice, a team that always gives them problems. The Bucs will also play the Falcons twice, a team that played them tough in a game they lost to us and then destroyed us in their final matchup against us. The Panthers will have a stud young quarterback in CJ Stroud leading them next year. They also play the Titans, Jags, Eagles, 49ers, Buffalo and Vikings next year. They also will play the Lions who Dan Campbell has heading in the right direction.
I know tanking is frowned upon, but anyone thinking that the Bucs will make the playoffs this year with either Trask or Baker as QB1 are not being realistic. The difference between Baker and Trask is 7-10 record with Baker vs 3-14 with Trask.
What is truly upsetting about all of this is because Licht wasted a second round draft pick on Trask instead of drafting another player to help the Bucs defend their Super Bowl.
March 17th, 2023 at 11:17 pm
Lots of closed head injuries on this thread. Donnie was better than this guy, Donnie’s gone because he cost too much for the amount of slippage we saw. But Jonah Williams has pretty much been a train wreck his whole career. Other than that, great idea.
March 18th, 2023 at 12:00 am
We’ve made a Mistake.
We’re NEVER going to get OUR franchise QB with the Mayfield hire. Or ANY of them for that matter… EVER!
The True path to happiness was to Ride or Die with Trask. TRASK was either “THAT GUY” or we DRAFT “THAT GUY”!!!!
I don’t give a FART what Bowles needs or wants PERIOD!
“WE NEED” A FRANCHISE QB!
I DO NOT WANT TO GO BACK TO THE LOST DECADE AND THIS ORGANIZATION JUST GUARANTEED IT IF THEY HAND THIS JOB OVER TO THAT 3 TIME LOSER OR ANY 3 TIME LOSER! BIG MISTAKE!
GO BACK TO THE DEN OF DEPRESSION BUCS?!?! STUPID!
March 18th, 2023 at 12:17 am
We ONLY needed Licht to choose the QB of OUR FUTURE wisely. That was ALL it was down to! He already found the BEST MISTAKE in Winston. He should be wise enough to choose the “BEST NEWLY MINTED WINNER” CORRECTLY BY NOW!
Maybe that’s it. He scared to screw it up again, SO HE SCREWS IT UP!
Oh Boy! Another wasted COUPLE of YEARS! GREAT! I hope I LIVE LONG ENOUGH TO SEE A DREAM COME TRUE!
And in THAT DREAM, there were NO RETREADS FROM MULTIPLE OTHER TEAMS! THAT’S A NIGHTMARE!
March 18th, 2023 at 12:23 am
Obvious – what position do you hold in the Bucs organization, and why did you let the professionals make these mistakes, considering they won a Lombardi, made the playoffs 3 straight years, two consecutive divisional titles, and now brought back LVD and Dean despite salary cap limitations?
You must not realize that the Bucs have attempted two rebuilds in their history. Each took an average of 12 years. It’s not in the Bucs persona, nor do winning teams tank. They reload.
We have one more season to put up with Bloweszo, but you have to take away all the excuses for why he can’t be fired. Licht is doing that. It’s brilliant.
March 18th, 2023 at 12:59 am
Dick, “Dude that stuff is dust particles and a wrapped mummy at this point. Enough boo-boo sauce. Let’s get it together over here. Sheesh.” This was so funny it deserves repetition but not about the Joes, but about some of the “fans” who post. Some actually think Trask had even an opportunity to beat out Gabbert. lol He has been mostly playing by himself and has finally been given an opportunity to compete! Let’s cheer for him to make it. GO BUCS!
March 18th, 2023 at 1:10 am
TO BE CLEAR…. I didn’t say ANYTHING about TANKING!
The VERY REASON I want change is BECAUSE I’m tired of MANY YEARS OF SHAT! It’s TIME FOR A CHANGE! This strategy ISN’T GOING TO WORK! Just like it NEVER HAS, and just like IT NEVER WILL!
Fleeting SUCKS! HOW ABOUT A REAL FRANCHISE QUARTERBACK? You know, like the teams have that SHOW UP AT THE PLAY OFFS EVERY YEAR! And PRETTY MUCH AT EVERY SUPER BOWL!
Shoot Goatfarmer, I don’t quite know what you’re saying… I know you have No Love for Bowles. I was riding right along during ALL OF THE YAERS so I’ve got a REAL CLEAR PICTURE! What’s CLEAR IS THAT WE NEED A FRANCHISE QB AND THIS IS NOT HOW YOU GET ONE!
Then again, I’m not SO SURE I should be so UPSET…. Like I said, Mayfield is a 3 time LOSER…. Like ALL the rest! Trask may or MAY NOT be THAT GUY. But MAKE NO MISTAKE ABOUT IT, MAYFIELD IS NOT “THAT GUY”!
He NOR ANY of the other retreads is THE GUY to be THE FRANCHISE QB OF THE TAMPA BAY BUCCANEERS!
Then again, he’s PROVEN that HE CAN’T TOW THE LINE. But he’s Just Good enough to MAKE SURE WE DON’T GET THE BEST SHOT “IF” WE HAVE TO TAKE ONE!! So I suppose it’s the draft since Trask isn’t going to get the chance to be the One to do it.. BTW, I’m NOT a Trask fanboy either! I WANT A FRANCHISE QB, ONE WAY OR THE OTHER! I’d Rather take a chance with an unknown, than to KNOWINGLY SCREW UP A SHOT AT THE “REAL DEAL”
Life is TOO SHORT to be WASTING THIS TIME with MEDIOCRITY, PERIOD!
And THAT’S where I’m coming from. I imagine I’ve made that, CLEAR!
March 18th, 2023 at 2:32 am
Chuckie Gruden sees Mayfield as a combination Jeff Garcia and Rich Gannon.
March 18th, 2023 at 7:49 am
Jonah Williams gave up 12 sacks last year twice as much as Smith the guy stinks overrated.
March 18th, 2023 at 9:02 am
Such a divided fan base!
March 18th, 2023 at 9:03 am
Forget about tanking for Caleb he doesn’t want to play for the Bucs.
March 18th, 2023 at 3:15 pm
Mayfield may be the guy for the Bucs!!! Get the o-line protecting him, add creative play calling, add a run game, and let him go to work!! Give him at least 9 or 10 games! Take a good look then. Maybe? Maybe not? He has talent!! We’ll see!!
March 18th, 2023 at 4:54 pm
Rod M and Redeemer, thanks. You have added some clarification to the discussion about Trask. If his throwing mechanism needed fixing it must not have been accomplished a year ago. If it is not fixed by now it is not likely to ever be.
Jameis Winston, who had a different problem, could never learn “when to hold ’em and when to fold ’em”.
March 19th, 2023 at 12:58 am
Obvious has a bit of the bipolar in her. Like half the all caps manic girl with a bit of a skyway jumper.
March 19th, 2023 at 2:59 am
@Goatfarmer
Yeah well GoatGirl, I don’t really give a Flip about your drunk arse and your 2 cents either…. You seem to reference A LOT of gay culture. WTF?
Does that say A LOT about you?
And btw, what part of the Bucs organization are you in? Never heard of Goat anything other than Tom Brady. And you ain’t him….
Funny, you wrote me something very different to me at another time. About how “moved” and inspired you were by what I wrote. AND GUESS WHAT GENIUS? It was down this VERY “same type sentiment” MONTHS AGO! That’s pretty funny when you think about it….. No accounting for taste or seeing past that bottle I suppose.
We’ll see who’s whistling a new tune by the end of this next season when any REAL franchise QB’s are just out of reach and the NEW lost decade entrenches itself deeper and deeper. I’ll see what tune your whistling at that time… THEN WE’LL TALK!
And Bipolar? Take a look in the mirror bud. Apparently, you don’t know if you’re coming or going. I’ll check you back at the end of the season. You can count on that.
March 19th, 2023 at 9:43 am
I like the dynamic of the energy both Canales and Mayfield can bring to the offense. Would nice to see some swagger on offense
