“Why Would I Leave?”
March 16th, 2023So today the Bucs had their show-and-tell after being able to keep free agent cornerback Jamel Dean in the building.
Dean admitted a big reason why he signed a four-year deal to remain with the Bucs is he had no desire to go elsewhere.
“I honestly didn’t want to leave, man,” Dean said. “I was born and raised in Florida. [I’m] close to home. I’m comfortable.
“Why would I leave?”
Dean grew up on the Space Coast.
Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht added that both Dean and outside linebacker Anthony Nelson, who also was at the presentation, had plenty of opportunities elsewhere to play.
It’s surprising the Bucs pulled off keeping Dean, who may have been the top cornerback in free agency, given how the Bucs were crunched under the salary cap. Licht said he had confidence he could make a fair offer to Dean. But even Dean admitted he was concerned the Bucs wouldn’t be competitive.
“I was a little worried,” Dean said. “I would hate to go up north because, man, I don’t like the cold.”
One reason Dean had perhaps his best season in 2023, he says, is he embraced doing homework to learn everything he could to be prepared.
Though Dean didn’t mention it, he may have learned film study from Richard Sherman. Dean gave the former All-Pro and member of the 2021 Bucs a shoutout for being the first veteran cornerback he had to lean on and learn from.
“I want to be as smart as [Bucs coach Todd] Bowles,” Dean said of his film study. Dean also confessed playing for Bowles was a huge draw for him
“I only want to be coached by Bowles,” Dean said. “He’s taught me everything I know.”

…….you’ve would’ve left if a team offered you Premiere shut down corner money…but nobody offered you that….cmon now, who you think you’re fooling?????
March 16th, 2023 at 1:36 pm
It’s nice to have a team that people want to play on vs in the lost decade where we had to overpay for 2nd tier players like DeSean Jackson and Swaggy Baker!
March 16th, 2023 at 1:36 pm
He’s just not that good..
March 16th, 2023 at 1:40 pm
Much better tfan that entitled brat, ten yatds off Hargreaves!!
March 16th, 2023 at 1:44 pm
Dean is a better man to man cover guy, IMO. Bowles soft zone stuff makes him not as good as he could be. I’m glad the Bucs were able to bring him back
March 16th, 2023 at 1:44 pm
Why would you leave you have the easiest head coach in the nfl that doesn’t believe in discipline you can just play at your own pace and chill and still make millions. Its a bucs life.
March 16th, 2023 at 1:53 pm
Bucsanthem whi never has anything list I’ve to say. Shutdown corners make what he signed for? Better check yo-sheet.
March 16th, 2023 at 1:57 pm
Looks like the defensive guys love Bowles, if no one else does
March 16th, 2023 at 1:58 pm
Dude has all the tools to be a lockdown #1 just needs that elite film study which can be taught keep it up Dean 5 picks this season LFG
March 16th, 2023 at 2:09 pm
I wish I could virtually bludgeon some of you with rotten produce and boo your comments, because ya’ll are some pessimists masquerading as football fans.
@Beej
That’s been evident since 2019, it’s just some of the posters here don’t like Bowles because some people need a boogeyman to explain why bad things happpen
March 16th, 2023 at 2:12 pm
For the sake of me,whry haven’t they went after C J Gardiner
March 16th, 2023 at 2:13 pm
Exactly!!!! It’s like the national media stupid takes that our receivers should ask for a trade because Brady is gone. This guys are on the national stage but in the end they are human beings with families and wouldn’t like moving from state to state anyone than I did in the military
March 16th, 2023 at 2:13 pm
^^^We cannot afford him, we were trying to figure out how to bring our own FAs back. Forget Gardner-Johnson, bring back Edwards & Neal

Contract Notes
Jalen Ramsey signed a five year, $100 million contract extension with the Rams. Details of the contract are from a report from Mike Garafolo. Per the report, Ramsey received a $25 million signing bonus. Ramsey received $43.7 million guaranteed at signing and $71.2 million guaranteed for injury.
================================================
Jamel Dean didn’t get a contract like that!!!!!!! Maybe next time you should do your own research about STATS!!!!!
March 16th, 2023 at 2:16 pm
Jamel Dean … “I want to be as smart as [Bucs coach Todd] Bowles,” Dean said of his film study. Dean also confessed playing for Bowles was a huge draw for him to return to the Bucs.
“I only want to be coached by Bowles,” Dean said. “He’s taught me everything I know.”
And there you have the primary reason, from his own lips, why Jamel Dean re-signed with the Bucs. Very possibly the same is true of LVD & Nelson. Todd Bowles’ problem last year was that he was dealt a crappy hand at the last second by BA. He played the hand as it was dealt, but now has the opportunity to play a different hand, a hand of his choosing this time. Unfortunately part of last year’s hand was a bill for $58 mil that he inherited, and that’ll radically restrict what he can do this year. Probably next year too. But hey, that gives the Bowles Bashers 2 more years to continue to whine, so I guess that’s a positive in their eyes.
March 16th, 2023 at 2:17 pm
We are lead to believe all of our players are so great so talented but when they are free agents nobody wants them and when we make a trade we have to not only trade the player we have to send another draft pick just to trade him. We were told for years how great OJ Howard was and went to trade him an all that was offered was a third day pick the rest is history by the way where is OJ now.
March 16th, 2023 at 2:18 pm
Damn! Lot of old miserable dudes read this site! Sad haha did you not read the last couple lines? A very good corner (Dean is) said he only wants to be coached by the man who is the head coach of your favorite football team, and half these comments still somehow are negative lol can’t make it up
March 16th, 2023 at 2:18 pm
The Debbie Downers never give up here. Obviously Dean could have gotten more money elsewhere – he was ranked a top 10 free agent the entire league, covering all positions. But he wanted to stay.
The franchise player tag for cornerbacks in 2023 is $18.12 million a year. That number represents the average of franchise tag salaries for that position for the previous 5 years adjusted for the current year salary cap.
It’s also interesting that all of the defense players who have given public interviews this offseason are unanimous in love for our “worst head coach in the league” Todd Bowles.
Gee, now whose opinion do I value more – the players who actually are coached by Coach Bowles, or the anonymous Negative Nancies and Debbie Downers who dominate the comment threads here at JBF? Boy, now that’s a hard decision! NOT!!!!!
March 16th, 2023 at 2:20 pm
Dude we traded mason for cap relief and threw in a 7th round pick. Licht came away from the table with fatter pockets and a 6th round pick, that’s a W. ho lee crap
March 16th, 2023 at 2:30 pm
Thebucsanthem, why are you here? You are obviously a troll
According to your name you should be a bucs fan but you always have negative sh t every time you post.. Go away you troll

TheBucsAnthem … ‘and you Sir, are yet another dumb, misinformed Buc’s fan who don’t know diddly squat about how much TOP players get….especially cornerbacks…..lemme just educate you for one second:’
Anthem …. I’d consider Jalen Ramsey to be at least 1 of the Top-5 CBs in today’s NFL. Miami paid him a king’s ransom for sure, but that doesn’t mean he’s the best CB, just that he’s one of the the highest paid. Your numbers were correct for his LAST contract BTW, but not for his current contract with Miami (he’s making less):
‘Ramsey’s fresh three-year, $55 million pact guaranteed him $35.5 million, including his signing bonus, salaries in 2023 and 2024, and a 2024 roster bonus.’
As I look at his 7-year career, I’d say that Jamel Dean’s stats are competitive with his, but Ramsey gets the edge in availability.
o Ramsey’s had 17 INTs in 7 years (roughly 2.5 per year). He’s been targeted 509 times and allowed 302 catches for a career 59.3% completions allowed percentage. He’s had excellent availability with 6919 def snaps in 7 years (988 per year). THAT’S impressive, and very likely a key reason he’s making the big bucks.
o Dean’s had 7 INTs in 4 years (not quite 2 per year). He’s been targeted 253 times and allowed 137 catches for a career 54.2% completions allowed percentage. His availability has been OK but not exceptional with 2648 def snaps in 57 games in 4 years (662 per year). It’s a lot better BTW since his rookie year when he only had 370 def snaps. In reality however, Jamel’s averaging slightly under 15 games per season for us (missed 9 games in 4 years).
But hey, press on. Continue to pick on Patrickbucs for being yet another ‘dumb, misinformed Bucs fan’.
March 16th, 2023 at 2:44 pm
As Byron would say…..”He don’t be no fool”
March 16th, 2023 at 2:47 pm
all the defensive player love for bowles is not evidence of his being a good hc.
most of these defensive players were coached by him as a defensive head coach for three yrs before he became head coach (in a system he designed).
fan pessimistic expectations of bowles performance as a head coach still has legs.
ps. he needs to get a defensive coach to improve his chances of improving his performance as a head coach. however i believe that being a defensive coach is too much ingrained as part of his identity to overcome.
March 16th, 2023 at 2:51 pm
Dean will get 52 million, not chump change by any means. Had he waited, he probably could have got 60 to 65 million elsewhere, most likely in a place was state income taxes.
A point arrives where you have to ponder. How much money do I actually need? I believe if I was 26 years old again, I could figure out how to do very nicely the next 50 years on 52 million
March 16th, 2023 at 3:08 pm
Dean certainly could’ve made more money on the open market. I think his signing is admirable, from his standpoint, and a steal from the bucs prospective. Nobody would ever knock a player who signed for significantly more dollars elsewhere.
March 16th, 2023 at 3:10 pm
Dean’s best years are ahead of him. Good job Licht!
March 16th, 2023 at 3:34 pm
First thing i think of is those red sleeves during his first action vs the Seahawks. He got torched. Matt Gay and those neon yellow shoes vs the Giants is the first thing I think of with him.
March 16th, 2023 at 3:51 pm
Just another dummy joining the big dummy party in the comments low IQ united
March 16th, 2023 at 3:53 pm
Defense Rules – Dean has been splitting time with SMB, while Ramsey has been a legit top flight #1 corner (even if he’s a bit overrated). They’re past production is really not comparable. With that said, Dean is seen as still improving and is at the top of his game physically while Ramsey is clearly on the decline from his peak (which was the best in the game to be sure).
Also you can’t look at stats on corners, as QB’s will (mostly) just stop throwing the ball vs top flight corners.
With all that said, if no one wants to pay SMB, the Bucs should bring him back too – but also draft someone and let them develop. It’s normally a disaster to start rookie corners, so get them in the system and ready to play for next year where they can be a nickel.
March 16th, 2023 at 4:04 pm
Give him a Creamsicle. Prepare for the pain. This is going to be Bowlescombobulated.
March 16th, 2023 at 4:27 pm
yall are a bunch of aholes. Cant we be proud of a kid we drafted wanting to stay and be apart of whatever is going to happen?
March 16th, 2023 at 4:40 pm
While you are all hating on Bowles consider that he was the guy who masterminded the defensive game plans that on consecutive weeks beat down Rodgers, Brees, and Maholmes. This hatred is irrational. The 2022 Buccaneers were vastly overrated and crushed by retirements and injuries.
March 16th, 2023 at 5:08 pm
Jamel, thanks for the loyalty and staying on. I like the Bucs hiring any Florida player and staff, when possible… and from any college background. Hope you have a blow out year in ’23!
March 16th, 2023 at 5:18 pm
Anthem, DR just peed in your Cheerios. Granted, that may be how you prefer them so you can thank him. As for the contract, I have no doubt Dean could have gotten more on the open market if he really tested it. But his own words gave the reasons why he stayed. Loves being in Florida, the weather obviously, and oopsie, he even loves his coach. Imagine that. Also there’s the tax break. So he traded all that for being marginally more rich. Good for him. And for us.
March 16th, 2023 at 5:39 pm
Bucsanthem.. Ramsey has been overated, maybe one of those college fans that can’t met it go? Gave up 70 pct completion percentage to opposing receivers. Check the Bills and yo-sheet!
March 16th, 2023 at 6:23 pm
@TheBucsAnthem –
Amidst all your great investigative research, did you miss that the Rams traded Ramsey to the Dolphins?
Also, no one said Dean was as good as Ramsey. But Ramsey seems to have already reached his ceiling and is perhaps trending down, whereas Dean is still getting better each year.
March 16th, 2023 at 9:47 pm
You leave if you’re offered more money and/or you join a better team. Like anyone else.
You leave if you recognize what Todd Bowles did not teach you. Such as what you and your mentor failed to do vs. the Rams in the playoff game that should have been a win but turned out to be the continuing example of everything wrong with this defense, the execution and discipline that was was lacking, and the scheme that was exposed.
Ya love it here. Because it’s easy, no pressure, it’s what you’re used to.
March 18th, 2023 at 3:16 pm
I am really tired of all the negative comments here.
Anyone can criticize. You have a grateful committed guy in Dean and others. Lift them up!🙏❤️🏉
