Was Logan Hall Ready For The NFL?

Joe isn’t suggesting anything outrageous here when by typing that rookie defensive lineman Logan Hall was pretty much MIA last year.
Quick, name a play he made (in a game). As the season wore on, Hall’s snap counts dwindled. That’s not a good sign for a rookie. That suggests he was not improving.
So last month at the combine, Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht was asked about Hall. The way Joe took Licht’s comments, it seems Hall, who played college ball at Houston, wasn’t physically ready for the NFL.
“He needs to add some good weight but he has to get some strength,” Licht said of Hall. “I think he’s so athletic and he’s doing all the right things. I definitely think we’re going to see progress this year.”
Unless Joe is reading this wrong, it smells like Hall was overwhelmed with the strength of NFL offensive linemen and too often relied on his athletic ability, not strength, to win plays. It didn’t work. Todd Bowles went there back in January.
Hall isn’t much different than a lot of rookies. Once they spend a full offseason in an NFL weightroom they look like different people. Perhaps that is all Hall needs is to bulk up?
So it seems going from the AAC to the NFL was a bit more of a bite than Hall was able to chew.

He also didn’t exactly play at a powerhouse. He was probably over-drafted based on his athletic potential, not because he was ready for the NFL.

Unless you’re a practice squad Trask type, should always give a rookie at least three years to watch for development.

Easy answer, NO.
And he never will be as long as he plays for a coich who doesn’t have his team ready to play at their best on Sundays. And especially since said coich can even confuse the smartest player. Said coich could turn Lawrence Taylor into Matt McCoy.
Dude is doomed. As is headless chicken JTS. As is Diva White.

But on the other hand, most of the players Bowels has head coiched turn to mung, so Logan Hall isn’t behind the curve on that basis.

Hall joined Tryon to help form this generation’s Milli Vanilli. Sweet, big hair…lots of dancing around and ultimately fraudulent. Whiffing on the two top picks since the Super Bowl win is glaring now.

Hopefully he has already been working on all that during his off season because let’s face it, they have less time now during training camp and workouts before the season starts.

The only thing I remember Logan Hall accomplishing last season was blowing up Jensen’s knee on the first day of training camp. Hopefully the kid contributes something in the coming season but right now he seems to have been a reach by Licht just like Tryon has been. Not every late first or early second round pick works out but in hindsight it sure looks like those 2 picks could have been used to build some depth on the O-line or the secondary.

Should Hall bulk up by 40 to 50 pounds in the next couple of years and play “lights out” football no one will ever know what his true weight is. He will always be listed as 6-6 and 283 on the stat sheets. What you come into the league with becomes official for your career I guess. No reporters or fans ever mention a guys playing weight anymore.

JimbobBucsFan … Hall played at around 260 lbs in college, but beefed up to 283 lbs for the Combine. Interestingly, the NFL prospects analysis read like this …
‘Hard-working, two-year starter with projectable frame and developmental traits whose best positional fit could be in the eye of the beholder. Hall played defensive tackle in college, but his playing style and physical profile are better suited for defensive end in a 3-4 alignment. He’s segmented and a little gradual in his attack, but flashes violent hands and forward charge as an interior rusher. Improvement lies ahead for Hall, but he needs a scheme fit and extended runway as a rotational lineman.’
What jumped out at me was ‘better suited for defensive end in a 3-4 alignment’. IOW, Will Gholston’s future replacement, BEFORE Will himself put on significant weight to move further inside?
Looking at Hall’s projected weaknesses, he had 4 that jump out in retrospect:
o Might not have a clean positional fit early on.
o Struggles to leverage and control the action in front of him.
o Too gradual pressing and shedding the block.
o Manhandled by double-team blocks.
I think the Bucs misdrafted him if they were truly expecting him to play inside as a 3-Technique as was indicated. His best playing weight could well be around where he is, possibly somewhat lighter (say 275-280 lbs), but playing with a lot more strength. Hopefully our new defensive coach Edwards can work with him & determine his best fit.

Are we speaking truth about the same people, Joe Logan Hall Tryon-Shoyinka? Just mix up the names n u get the same results. We select back to back defensive players in 2021 n 2022 draft with primarily the same weaknesses n concerns. There were players available after Tryon n Hall who played much better than they did, individually or as both. Whose idea was it to select these two in the 2021 n 2022 draft? Are we searching for defensive players to develop a culture of weakness, passiveness, soft, timid, n intimidated players?

OK Let’s not go crazy here. Some of us have watched from the beginning. I am also a UM fan and was excited when we drafted Sapp, But I remember Sapp’s 1st year. While I’m not trying to compare Hall to Sapp. I am showing that even the great one’s don’t always start out so well. There is a difference at DL when you step up to the NFL. Sapp had 3 sacks and 26 total tackles his first year. Really he disappeared when he was on the field his 1st year and a half. Hall had 2.5 sacks and 12 total tackles in year one. Give him a year to bulk up then let’s see if he can make a difference. The 2nd half of Sapp’s 2nd year he became the beast that he was known for. Give Hall a chance before we kick him to the curb.

Hall looked fine to me, but I know that some watch the game thinking reality is a defense getting a sack on every drive they play or a rookie not overachieving year one means he’s a “bust” lol. It’s got nothing to do with readiness, our DL under Bowles is deployed like a bball rotation as it is not just 2-3 guys rotating with eachother. 2022 we saw Vea play more 3 tech than ever before, Bowles changed his alignment habit of sending out 5 man fronts on early down and lightening up the box to make his coverages less legible.
Another fan labeled “bust” in JTS, was used more in coverage snaps in 2022 which allows for the a-gap blitzes from White/David that has some people convinced Devin White can play OLB better than JTS even though part of JTSs’ job is to do things that makes Devin Whites’ job easier lol Logan Hall will be fine, he’s still huge, still comes off the ball way too high for my liking, but is as active with his hands as advertised and still has the stature to play multiple roles on our defensive front. It’ll be interesting to see how he’s changed once guys start returning to camp.

Bucs should have stayed home and drafted Devin Lloyd instead of letting Jags get him. Lloyd played well and had 115 tackles and three picks, which equals Lavonte Davids’ INT total for the last 6 years. Horrible mistake drafting Hall when you knew you would need a LB.

I don’t argue with the pick. They trade back and he had a high ceiling. But strength was issue and lack of competition to expose it. Give him this off season and hopefully he addresses it. If not he is a 3rd down interior rusher which is a bust.

I do think you can debate the trade back for Hall. Bucs get a 4 and 6 and use the 6 to move up 3 spots to get goedeke. You basically take Hall and Otton instead of Devin Lloyd. Debate is there

Hindsight is 20/20, draft Devin Lloyd when we had LVD & White, but were without Suh and went into the ’22 draft w/o Hicks under contract. We also used the trade capital from that trade back to draft Otton, Kieft & McCollum, so in that hindsight are we really saying Devin Lloydd is more valuable than those 4 players? All of whom contributed and played special teams.

Hated the pick from the start. They had made up their mind what type of player they wanted with their first pick. Before the draft Arians kept saying they needed more speed from their inside pass rush. Instead of drafting the best player available they drafted Hall because he was the closest thing that matched that profile. Even though they traded back to get him he was still over drafted.

JTS was drafted in the 1st round at pick #32: in 22 starts over his first 2 seasons JTS has 8 sacks, 24 QB hits, 0 FF, 69 tackles and 11 TFL.
Let’s compare JTS to another OLB drafted at almost exactly the same pick in the NFL draft.
TJ Watt was drafted in the 1st round at pick #30: in 31 starts over his first 2 seasons Watt had 20 sacks, 34 QB hits, 7 FF, 122 tackles and 23 TFL.
Jason Licht told us that JTS would replace JPP’s production and would match Shaq’s level of production.
That hasn’t happened.

Logan and Joe Troy were horrible picks to start from. Neither did enough to go as high as they did in the draft only Tampa would blow two picks on mediocre players if they’re even that. Jason sucks bad when it comes to drafting Defesive lineman and edge rushers

Right, so in hindsight we should’ve taken LLoyd and left holes going into the 2022 season at CB, IDL, and TE. I guess it makes sense after the fact and judging players in a vacuum w/no consideration for how it would’ve effected the draft haul or our depth chart. Also, all 4 of those players played so calling them “nothing” is leaning more toward hyperbole, but whatever

Watch #90 get destroyed by the Carolina Panthers offensive line in the week 7 matchup.
The Panthers, led by the amazing rookie quarterback in PJ Walker, ran for 180 yards in that game with Foreman and Hubbard.
The Panthers didn’t double team Hall at all which is a clear sign that they don’t respect you, and yet he was being pushed 5 yards of the line of scrimmage by either Carolina’s center or guard.
Hall is atrocious and an awful draft pick in TB12’s Last Dance season by Licht.

Hopefully that’s all it is because the times he played early on in the season, he looked promising.
