Jason Licht’s History Suggests He Won’t Pay The Ransom For Lamar Jackson
March 12th, 2023Could Kyle Trask actually motivate Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht to trade for Baltimore quarterback Lamar Jackson?
That’s what a numbers-inclined, follicly-challenged stenographer from the four-letter seems to think.
Billy Barnwell of BSPN believes going from Tom Brady to Kyle Trask competing for starting gig is enough to jolt a man to break from his personal history and trade multiple first-round picks for a star quarterback.
Barnwell has several items on why and why not the Bucs should be interested in acquiring Jackson.
In this one, Barnwell thinks Licht may be motivated by fear..
Would they be willing to trade two first-round picks? Tampa Bay hasn’t typically been aggressive in using its top picks to move up for players or acquire veterans during Jason Licht’s reign as general manager. It has made small moves up to grab Tristan Wirfs, which worked great, and Roberto Aguayo, which did not. With that being said, I don’t think anybody in this organization wants to enter 2023 with Trask as the unquestioned starter.
Let Joe be very clear: If the Bucs do trade for Jackson, it will be only because Team Glazer has signed off on it. Perhaps, Team Glazer is pushing Licht to make the deal (if all the other questions are answered to Licht’s satisfaction like injuries and guaranteed Team Glazer loot).
Internationally-popular JoeBucsFan.com columnist Ira Kaufman has often said that since Team Glazer finally got a taste of what it was like to have a star quarterback with Brady, going from Brady to Trask would be a bitter pill to swallow. Perhaps they wouldn’t even try to eat the prescription?
While Jackson is not Brady (who is?), he is a popular star. He is exciting. Folks enjoy watching him. He is dynamic. He will bring sizzle and quite possibly wins. Sizzle = excitement. Excitement = eyeballs. Eyeballs = relevance. Relevance = revenue.
Jackson, 26, could be that long-sought-after young star quarterback Team Glazer has dreamed of. It’s something they’ve craved since before Chucky was fired.
If Licht does break his pattern and trades for Jackson, you better believe this came with the full blessing if not pressing insistence from Team Glazer.
After the ransom Carolina paid to get the No. 1 overall pick from the Bears for C.J. Stroud(?), who has yet to take a snap in the NFL, two first-round picks for a former league MVP is beginning to seem like a damn bargain.
March 12th, 2023 at 8:13 am
No way Team Glazer agrees to pay Jackson a fully guaranteed contract.
March 12th, 2023 at 8:13 am
Expect Baltimore to match any financial offer. They are just waiting to see what the offer is. Rest assured Jackson won’t get out of Baltimore.
March 12th, 2023 at 8:17 am
Joe- I read something that said by giving Jackson the non exclusive franchise tag. They are letting another team do the dirty work of creating a contract for them. Then Baltimore will take a week to match the offer and the team that tried to sign Jackson has missed out on the desirable free agent QBs. I guess the only way around this is to strike a direct trade w the ravens. Does that sound correct?
March 12th, 2023 at 8:26 am
If I was a GM I wouldn’t give ANY QB a fully guaranteed contract such as Jackson is wanting. But it someone tries to do that for him given his injury history they need to be Baker-acted as they’re showing clear signs of insanity and are a clear and present danger to their team.
March 12th, 2023 at 8:35 am
You left off one winning=everything
March 12th, 2023 at 8:39 am
An agent who represents himself has a fool for a client. Lamar Jackson is a fool. The Bucs would be fools to want him if they had the money. Joe is just wasting our time even writing of Jackson coming here.
March 12th, 2023 at 8:41 am
We only need to clear another $50+ mil and forfeit our future for a guy that is likely going to be hurt late in every season. Licht is no dummy
March 12th, 2023 at 8:44 am
We don’t need to overpay at a time like this. Let’s get our house in order
March 12th, 2023 at 8:50 am
Guess Joe has to write something. Don’t care how talented he is, and apparently neither do the Ravens, I wouldn’t sign any player to a fully guaranteed long term deal. And this guy hasn’t played a complete season in two years and opted out of a playoff game. What a joke.
March 12th, 2023 at 8:56 am
Only (4) 300 yd passing games and (1) 3000 yd passing season in his career…
In a league set up for QBs to put up big numbers Lamar is still a very limited passer…
He’s not a bonafide franchise QB imo, he’s an athlete pretending to be a QB…His last trip to the playoffs he blew the game by overthrowing a wide open Mark Andrews (who’s 6’7) on a 2 point conversation attempt. The icing on the cake is him not finishing the last 2 seasons because of injury; that’s the risk factor that comes with his style of play. He’s the definition of the term “Buyer Beware”…He’s exciting to watch but he will most definitely put limitations on what you can do in your passing game…
March 12th, 2023 at 9:27 am
To me if they would trade him for 2 1st rd picks, I’d do it. Look who we’ve gotten lately. JTS and Logan Hall. I’d do that trade all day long. And I get the salary cap issues but somehow other teams keep doing it. It’s been awesome to compete the last 3 years and i don’t want it to end. And putting Jackson into an offense made for Russel Wilson, I think Jackson is Wilson on steroids.
March 12th, 2023 at 9:40 am
The Bucs need both Lamar Jackson and Aaron Rodgers…
Use them both in different situations.
Plus – if one gets hurt we have another decent QB to take over.
You really can’t have too many good QBs. Right?
March 12th, 2023 at 9:50 am
AnonymousBuc76
Your post is spot on. All this talk about Lamar Jackson is lunacy!!!
March 12th, 2023 at 10:24 am
Not happening. How could they clear another 40+mil for Jackson and still fill roster holes?
Besides: The crows are just letting other teams do the heavy lifting for them.
March 12th, 2023 at 10:26 am
One read run is NOT the answer for sustainable winning!
Even the Ravens are realizing that truth…
March 12th, 2023 at 10:30 am
@AnonymousBuc76 Says
Spot on, lad. The Joes – who sung the praises of Johnny Manziel and Jameis Winston – want us to buy their nauseating spiel about Trask. They struck out twice and are about to strike out a third time.
March 12th, 2023 at 10:37 am
And Licht shouldn’t pay that price for L Jackson. Jackson has been pretty good but not that kind of good.
March 12th, 2023 at 10:38 am
Again QB’s that won’t ever start for the Bucs:
Lamar Jackson
Aaron Rogers
Matt Ryan
Trask
The QB for next season is most likely someone we haven’t even considered
March 12th, 2023 at 10:48 am
Dont want him
Cant afford him
Personally I dont think he’s not worth it
March 12th, 2023 at 11:03 am
Bucs had better worry about signing L David. Rumor has it David is not pleased with what the Bucs are offering. Can’t blame the man for wanting his paper. Somebody will give it to him too.
March 12th, 2023 at 11:13 am
Bucs are rebuilding with alot of holes on the roster they need all their draft picks but besides that they can’t afford what Lamar wants so it’s not even a discussion to have go bucs .
March 12th, 2023 at 11:26 am
I’d rather keep the 1st round picks and give Licht a chance to draft 2 more busts and pray that Trask is going to be a solid starting QB even though he hasn’t even been able to earn the back up job in 2 seasons. That sounds like a really solid plan, especially when your number one concern is the Glazer boy’s bank account, I’d hate for them to have to spend money in order to compete. Let’s go back to hoping things work out.
March 12th, 2023 at 11:26 am
Come to think of it, didn’t Lovie do a job on Houston by pulling out the stops to win the last game of the year? And who in their right mind ever thought he had what it took to be a good HC?
March 12th, 2023 at 11:32 am
Seems to me Lovie learned the wrong lesson in Tampa. It isn’t that you don’t tank to draft the best player in a years draft. It is that you don’t tank and draft a guy that stands up and yells at a girl in the cafeteria, and allegedly steals crab legs.
March 12th, 2023 at 11:45 am
PASS on Lamar. No thanks
March 12th, 2023 at 11:52 am
No.
Again, for the millionth time, there is no way to fit this guy in without crippling the cap and unloading good players. And I’m not interested in giving up 2 #1s for a guy who isn’t even a good passer or leader, and appears to be injury prone.
I also think they’re more interested in a QB who’s not a total dumbass.
March 12th, 2023 at 11:57 am
Instead of Lamar Jackson maybe the Bucs can trade for Patrick Mahomes…
Why not?
Since we are now playing fantasy football here at JBF.
HAHAHAHAHA.
Come on Joe – take your meds bro.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:01 pm
Give him whatever he wants
March 12th, 2023 at 12:08 pm
Lamar Jackson would sink the Bucs for a decade. Plus Baltimore isn’t going to let him get away. Can’t wait for this situation to be resolved so I don’t have to read about this subject anymore.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:09 pm
You know Marine, but I said about the same thing to my wife. Since we are getting pretty far out there with articles about dozens of FA, 95% which we can’t or wouldn’t reasonably sign, why not Mahomes. What can I say?
March 12th, 2023 at 12:11 pm
The Ravens can match any offer and I highly doubt Tampa offers fully guaranteed so it seems there’s very little chance we can pry him away.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:16 pm
Sasquatch lol, a lot of your fans are thinking from the heart with no real understanding of the cap and what it will take to sign these high price players. Hell I am not sure but, I think we still have to make room under the cap to sign our draft picks
March 12th, 2023 at 12:25 pm
I wouldn’t want Jackson solely because he refused to take the field in a playoff game. You don’t want someone like that leading your team
March 12th, 2023 at 12:27 pm
Argh just read a thing on PFT that we’re intent on bringing in Mayfield. I guess he’d be cheap, and it would save a draft pick
March 12th, 2023 at 12:29 pm
Agree Beej.
Couple that with the insane contract demands and injury history, you’d have to be a fool to think that’s the way to go for a QB.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:31 pm
Good we don’t want an injury prone primadonna running back as our QB let alone giving up 2 first round picks and a garuanteed contract.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:36 pm
Can’t believe most of these comments. Lamarr has proven to be a top 10 quarterback. No wide outs. Average tightends and he alone has kept that franchise in the playoffs. He has missed 9 games in his career. He will make owners regret not offering him a contract. Don’t get me wrong but if he was another color we wouldn’t be having this conversation.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:39 pm
Jackson is too big of a risk.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:41 pm
@ mark
LOL!
Hey why not? Aim high… As long as you aren’t smoking rocks.
We have the same chance of signing Jackson as we do Mahomes at his juncture.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:41 pm
Lamar Jackson is not happening. Why are we still talking about this. Let’s keep our posts real Joe.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:41 pm
I wouldn’t mind bringing in Baker or Cooper Rush.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:47 pm
I changed my mind and I’d sacrifice one bad season if tampa hit on a quarterback in the draft or Trask ends up being a quality starter
March 12th, 2023 at 12:49 pm
Baker Mayfield? Bowles might as well start packing up his office.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:53 pm
Sign David, SMB and Nacho trade White and Gage for draft picks that will give us 11 draft picks to fill the rest of the team. Fill in remaining FAs later as necessary..
March 12th, 2023 at 12:55 pm
Please guys…Canales should have the decision of who we sign, of course, them being affordable. You kind of have to hope he can do the same magic he did with Geno Smith, with Trask and whomever else we bring in. It is his responsibilitylet him choose the groceries.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:57 pm
@ BucsfanFred
I just read a report on PFT that stated the Bucs were targeting Baker-Mayfield.
Hopefully he comes cheap with a bunch of incentives.
March 12th, 2023 at 1:00 pm
These articles are still better than the ones where we pretend Trask is the starter and we try to pair him with talent to be successful. Clearing your cap of talent with a lame duck HC doesnt set you up for the future- I puts you an extra year behind armpits like Atlanta and Carolina and saves The Glazers money while the fans get to pay full price for an unproductive and boring product. Likely all a smokescreen for a lamer like Mayfield, who is smaller, less productive, and less durable than Lamar, but he will at least be cheaper. SMH.
March 12th, 2023 at 1:06 pm
Say it ain’t so Joe just saw on the web the bucs are targeting pouty face Mayfield.
March 12th, 2023 at 1:29 pm
Bowles says my kind of quarterback mayfield was 2-8 in 2022.
March 12th, 2023 at 1:30 pm
Kyle Trask:
The best chance this team has for long term success. If he can play. 2023 can be a get right w/cap year.
Nobody knows what Kyle can do. Im willing to give the kid a chance if Tampa thinks he can play. Anyone who thinks he is automatically going to suck
Or be a stud does not truly know.
March 12th, 2023 at 1:31 pm
It will not matter who is QB of the coming Bowles Calamity. Go as cheap as we can.
March 12th, 2023 at 3:23 pm
2 ones is a bargain. We’ve wanted so many ones and twos.
March 12th, 2023 at 5:35 pm
That’s good news. Whoever does pay the big bucks easily injured Lamar Fractureson is looking for is a fool
March 12th, 2023 at 5:54 pm
The Fins are Tom Brady approved
March 12th, 2023 at 9:42 pm
Proves that Licht is far better at this than some of the commenters. It’s a year everyone knows we shouldn’t be competitive. If we hold our emotions and think rationally, we could get set up for a dynasty in less time.
