Hendon Hooker Doesn’t Apologize For Throwing To Open Receivers
March 11th, 2023Why apologize for being good?
Football types, maybe even media types, have been scoffing about Tennessee quarterback Hendon Hooker’s excellent numbers and Air Raid offense.
It’s almost like folks are trying to get Hooker to sink in the draft.
Yeah, Hooker is a product of the Air Raid. Few quarterbacks have been successful in the NFL after running an Air Raid in college. Of course, there are always exceptions. You know, like Pat Mahomes.
So Hooker ran an Air Raid and had wide open receivers to throw to. As Joe’s good friend Mike Tanier of Football Outsiders types, so what? Would folks rather have Hooker miss open receivers?
Hooker’s tape shows a quarterback who can indeed check down to his secondary target and avoid staring down his primary receiver about as well as most college prospects. Throwing to Jalin Hyatt and Cedric Tillman made life a little easier for him, but check out C.J. Stroud’s receivers in 2021 and 2022, Joe Burrow’s in his final college season, and so forth. Of course the guy who threw 58 touchdowns and five interceptions in two SEC seasons had fine receivers. If he put up those numbers without fine receivers he’d be getting recruited by the Justice League, not the NFL.
Joe was sure hoping the Bucs could grab Hooker in the second round. His age (25) and his knee surgery are, rather than hitting open receivers, legitimate concerns. That’s why Joe was thinking Hooker might slide to the second round and be had by the Bucs.
But the way folks are going nuts for a guy with a losing record and really subpar throwing stats like Anthony Richardson, Joe isn’t so sure Hooker will slide that far. If AR15 really does go in the top-10, then there is no way Hooker lasts to the second round.
Someone is going to get a helluva bargain with Hooker. Will it be the Bucs?

I hope we can draft this kid, there is a good interview on YouTube Pat MacAfee about a month ago. Head screwed on straight which is something I always look for in interviews.

2nd round QB’s on the roster. One unproven the other a true rookie coming off surgery. Still sounds better than the LJ nonsense people are spun up about.
March 11th, 2023 at 1:45 pm
I would love to see us draft Hooker, just don’t know if he will slide all the way to us in the second round
March 11th, 2023 at 1:46 pm
While it’s no guarantee…..It sure sounds like a better deal to me than Lamar Jackson……even if we take him with our #1…..we save a #1 pick and tens of millions of dollars…..
Hooker in the 2nd would be a steal……but he won’t make it.
I like the idea of trading down in the first and using our boatload of picks to take younger players to replace our older expensive players.
Let’s draft a RT, TE, RB, LB, DT, CB, S…
Replacing D Smith, Brate, Lenny, LVD, Hicks, Dean & Edwards
March 11th, 2023 at 1:47 pm
trade down to late 20s in the 1st and he should be there
March 11th, 2023 at 1:57 pm
I am not a quarterback evaluator, so maybe I’m missing something, but if you watch his highlights, he hardly ever hits his guy in stride.

A Trashk led offense might get you 9 ppg if the run game gets going.
Goobert will challenges JaBoo’s interception record.
So, it’s the other veteran Bucs are bringing in that might provide hope. But it won’t be Lamar Jackson.
Baker, Jacoby, Cooper, Case, even Matt Ryan.
March 11th, 2023 at 2:50 pm
Yeah, I’m thinking he’s going to shoot up the board as well – although, it’s always possible you have a collapse like last year, where everyone except Pickett slid way down the board.
I don’t really watch college football, but from watching his highlights he seems to have all the tools you need. He didn’t pop off the screen as being great at any particular thing, but seemed to be good in a lot of areas. However, that opinion is based off very limited viewing. Reading up on him, I’m seeing various places having the Bucs take him in the draft, which normally means that isn’t going to happen.
But if the Bucs really do like him, then absolutely take him in the 1st, just to get that 5th year if nothing else. He’s a little old for a rookie, but the Bucs didn’t really seem to have many issues with their last ‘old’ QB, so I wouldn’t let that stand in the way of anything.
I’m in no way endorsing the move, yet, as I just don’t know enough, but at least it would make the team more interesting than the Trask vs Gabbert vs Flacco battle I’m currenting seeing play out in my mind.
March 11th, 2023 at 2:53 pm
Trask is younger and has better numbers in college.
Please stop.
March 11th, 2023 at 2:57 pm
Marcus Mariota never apologized for hitting open receivers in college, either.
March 11th, 2023 at 3:01 pm
I’d rather have Gabbert, honestly. Actually, I don’t want ANY player, this year with any sort of injury history. I also do not trust Bowles’s player evaluations one bit, either.
March 11th, 2023 at 3:21 pm
OG SB, my apologies! I do know that you are not the one I was targeting, but you haven’t posted as much recently and I wasn’t sure if you were still active. This lunatic posts everyday with the same regurgitated garbage and needed to be called out. Nice to see that others are doing so as well. Hope you’re doing well man, you are a good poster and no offense intended.
March 11th, 2023 at 3:22 pm
Resign Gabbert and draft Will Levis! Both of them have cannons for arms and Blaine can win games if Trask bombs out.
March 11th, 2023 at 3:54 pm
Saw the guy play at Tennessee I personally believe hes the best quarterback in the draft. I hope the Bucs trade down get a later first and extra second round pick. Go with a cornerback with first pick then Hooker if available with the second. But if all the quarterbacks go in the top ten then he probably won’t get past washington but if he does I might grap him at 19 or whatever pick you have traded down to.
March 11th, 2023 at 3:54 pm
My favorite qb in this class. I would take him at 19 if we can’t trade down a little. He is the real deal and will be a stud in the pros. Normally I’m always bpa when drafting but he can be our future qb for a long time.
March 11th, 2023 at 4:04 pm
Not s Gators fan. But he still stands out more than Trask. Hate it or love it we need competition. Trask hasn’t done anything in the last couple of years on an UNEVEN playing field. Brady rumors are out their about him wanting a vet to back up for sure… I’d rather take Herndon in the second than Robert….. This team has changed
March 11th, 2023 at 4:09 pm
Ben DiNucci is tearing it up in the XFL with over 800 yards passing with a 69% completion rate. Pair him with Cooper Rush and you give two capable and affordable competition to Kyle Trask without breaking the bank.
March 11th, 2023 at 4:13 pm
43 TDs in one season looks better than 58 in two. We need trenches in the early rounds more than we need a QB who won’t be competition for half the season. There’s no guarantee Trask will be bad, and there’s no guarantee Hooker will be good. Build a team first that a QB can succeed with. Brady had his first losing season with the roster we had, and nobody here is betting it will be improved immediately. I believe Trask will surprise a lot of the “fans” on this board. I consider our new OC to be a huge upgrade over Leftwich.
March 11th, 2023 at 4:13 pm
Trask had vastly better stats than Hooker in college – led the entire nation in passing yards, passing TDs, and TD-INT ratio … without relying on a gimmick college style offense, without a massive injury to overcome … and after 2 years as understudy to the GOAT, is totally NFL ready.
March 11th, 2023 at 4:16 pm
This is not a great QB draft, so none of this matters much.
No one (outside) at this point has any idea what this team’s identity is under Bowles, and no idea what Rah Rah Canales has in mind. “I want a QB who throws and the WR can catch it” is not genius. Exactly what is the offense going to be, we don’t know. What is the longer-term agenda for the team as a whole?
So how can anyone speculate about QBs? Are we looking at a short-term plug-in to do nothing but manage the offense until the team is blown up later, or is this the moment that the w– is shot? How long is Rah Rah here for?
Everyone wants Jalen Hurts 2.0, but there’s still chatter about old-line statues, even Matt Ryan. It would make no sense to commit to any long-term investment to a style-specific QB, if the team is not also invested in that style for the future.
If the idea is simply to bide time (until Bowles gets out of here), then let Trask play, and let Bowles bring back Gabbert, his favorite QB. That’s it. Save your cash. Tank, and do the QB thing next year. That’s boring, but as long as Bowles is the HC, what is there to be excited about?
March 11th, 2023 at 4:17 pm
By some Draft Rankings, Hooker is about the 120th ranked prospect. That’s almost a 5th rounder. Certainly QBs tend to go a bit higher, especially if here’s a run on any position, like QB. Maybe he can be had in the 3rd round.
March 11th, 2023 at 4:20 pm
I’m a little bit surprised that Stetson Bennett isn’t getting more hype this draft.
I understand he is only 5’10” – Brice Young is only 5’10”.
I understand he is 26 years old – Hooker is 25 years old.
If he is available when we pick in the 5th we should take him.

Trask passing would be okay under normal conditions but Brady had to get rid of the ball fast but Trask is going to take a lot of sacks. This team definitely needs a more mobile quarterback. Unless they draft a couple of offensive lineman.

March 11th, 2023 at 5:25 pm
Marine, I’m good with Bennett too. From what I saw his arm talent looked as good as any of the others throwing. Obviously not as strong am arm as Richardson but who cares? How many 70 yard passes are you throwing in a game? None usually. He has good touch and a good enough arm. And we get him in a later round while we keep stockpiling depth.

99 I’ve been here since day one
I was a long time season ticket holder and have seen and experienced it all.
Continue your suckerness and the inept ownership will continue flopping around.
Look around the league, times are changing and owners are demanding excellence .
OBP is packed to the rafters with yes men cashing their checks and coloring between the lines.
I demand what the Glazers are incapable of providing.
March 11th, 2023 at 5:47 pm
@ 007
Ya – I don’t get it…
Bennett has done nothing but win and compete successfully at the highest level at Georgia.
I think he is a hidden gem.
March 11th, 2023 at 5:49 pm
LV, first off kudos for tapping out something even slightly different. Bravo. But I have to ask. If you are demanding something that you concede the owners are incapable of, how exactly do you expect that to happen? And before you say change the ownership, which you do quite often, how exactly do you expect that to happen? You’d have to convince the owners of a profitable and successful franchise to sell their team to… Someone. And you’d have to do that single-handedly since you’re the only one whose hair is on fire about this.
We’ve gone through periods of success with this team. I’ve been a season ticket holder since 1991, I’ve seen it as well. But there are 32 teams. I maintain that our ownership is certainly in that top half and perhaps even in the top third based on results. So I guess I’m saying I’d like to see a bit of a more detailed plan from you regarding what you want to happen, aside from just mindlessly spouting sell the team, and how you think that might happen in reality. I know, I know, that would take more than a copy paste. And maybe even some thought. But come on now, thrill us with your acumen.

The current state of the team is up in the air, and this looks like a transitional year. We can all see that. But Jeezus dude, what good is all this b!tching and moaning doing?
Seriously, if you really want to get their attention, protest in front of OBP with a bunch of your other disgruntled buddies. You might just get enough media attention to get the Glazers attention.
March 11th, 2023 at 5:55 pm
OK, no one else seems to want to say it, so I’ll say it …
Why aren’t we focusing on FREE AGENCY right now instead of on the DRAFT?
The Bucs’ roster is a mess. Any of us could name holes that we have for probably a dozen starters AND key rotational players who’ll be needed who aren’t on our roster right now. Maybe 3 or 4 of those will be filled by rookies, IF we’re lucky.
WHO we draft depends on a ton of different factors. The only thing we can really control of that right now is what NEEDS we have going into the draft. And yes, we do that by who we sign in free agency. First things first?
March 11th, 2023 at 6:04 pm
The issue with FA is affordability. JL needs to make a few more moves on current roster, then sign his veteran FA QB.
March 11th, 2023 at 6:06 pm
99, talking sense to people who are myopic is almost always a failed enterprise. I know because I do it myself, haha. But what you wrote is true.
Sasquatch, I think you interrupted LV just as he was getting started on his business plan of a post enlightening us to the master plan that will result in the Glazers gratefully selling their team to some other heretofore unknown owner. But as with first round quarterbacks, it’s always a 50/50 venture. Grass is always greener and all that. For every Robert Kraft there is a Daniel Snyder. Still don’t see how any fan can complain about a team that has two Lombardi’s in the trophy case in the last 20 years. Most NFL fans with the possible exception of the Patriots would love to switch places.

We have Trask. One can presume we’ll sign Gabbert to another 1 year deal. STILL need a third qb, and even 2nd/3rd tier guys like Brissett get $4 million a year, makes more sense to draft a guy like Hooker. He’ll be less than $4 million (?) and he might be tons better than the Jacoby Brissetts of the world

That’s not clear at all. His main benefit was that he knew the Arians offense inside and out. It’s possible he could return because there’s a familiarity with the players, but more likely Canales wants guys with experience in the system he runs.
March 11th, 2023 at 6:49 pm
Sasquatch … ‘Because we aren’t doing anything in free agency except signing a couple of our own inexpensive guys and shopping the bargain bin. It wouldn’t surprise me if they signed nobody in week one.’
And IF that ends up being the case, we’re totally screwed for 2023 before we even get out of the gate.
o Bucs have 31 guys under contract right now who were on the team last season (not counting Fournette or Brate who will supposedly be gone).
o We have 22 UFAs (not counting Donovan Smith or Brady), plus 2 RFAs (Delaney & Gill) who were also on the team last season. SOME of those are worth re-signing for sure.
ASSUMING that all 31 players from last year who are currently on the roster make the team (and that includes Succop BTW), we’ll need to fill a whopping 22 holes. Out of our 9 draft picks, I’ll be surprised if 7 make the 53-man roster. IF that happens, we’ll still need to fill a whopping 15 holes.
MAYBE the smartest place to be looking RIGHT NOW is in our own UFA & RFA group? We know what they’re capable of, and we should have a decent idea of what it’ll take to sign them. Bucs have to free up some more money for sure, OR we really will be scraping the bottom of the barrel just to fill those 15 open slots. That’s a horrible prescription for creating a competitive team.
March 11th, 2023 at 7:04 pm
If Canales is calling the shots, Goobert will be cleaning Brady’s swimming pool in Miami in 2023. Meanwhile, #2 will show outstanding clipboard holding skills as #3, if he’s fortunate.

Why exactly can’t you don’t both? Not everyone has severely limited mental capacities, you know. Some of us can handle both conversations. It’s true, just like it was true when I told you Ryan Smith and Chris Conte were literally the two worst DB’s in the NFL when you said they’d be good starters.
March 11th, 2023 at 8:30 pm
What are you talking about??? Licht and Bowles spoke for about an hour total in Indianapolis answering all sorts of Bucs questions, of the past and the future?
Team Glazer never talks except maybe at the spring owners meeting. Why folks think the Glazers will address anything is beyond Joe. And why this is important for anyone is just strange.
The Glazers have spent the better part of 30 years fully avoiding the public eye. What makes anyone think all of a sudden Joel Glazer will turn into Jerry Jones?

I for one believe that Licht has a few tricks up his sleeve. Giving up on this season isn’t in the cards. Licht will deliver the goods and it all begins in the trenches. We need another highly rated OT for sure. If we can get another anchor on our Oline we would be set for the next decade. Bookends

I’m just being realistic. There is no cap to spend on free agents. We’ll be just under cap when free agency begins. The only remaining cuts that could save us money are Succop, Mason, and Gage and those add up to only 12 million. Unless you think we’re trading Evans, Godwin, or Devin White I don’t know where you think the cap space is coming from. I’m just talking about numbers. Look at overthecap.com/salary-cap/tampa-bay-buccaneers if you wanna confirm this for yourself.
They’ll find ways to clear space for some cheap signings to fill out the roster, but I don’t see much else. Certainly no splashy signings. If they manage to sign Lavonte and SMB, it’ll be a huge win. Dean is gone.
I’ve said it before. I expect them to rely on draftees and UDFAs this year out of necessity. I imagine they’ll be very aggressive post-draft to sign the best remaining UDFAs at positions of need.
March 11th, 2023 at 8:56 pm
Actually, I’d rather take a chance on Tanner McKee. He’s the most used to tight windows…and that’s all these rookies face in the NFL.

Would love to see the Bucs draft Hooker. He has everything you look for in a college QB prospect. It seems unlikely he will be there where the Bucs currently sit in the second round. Perhaps the Bucs can trade back in the first, pick up another second round pick and get him late in the first round.

I’m tired of the doom and gloom attitude…
You can’t win the super bowl every year guys unless your the steelers or patriots..
I’ve got to see the bucs win 2 super bowls in my life time..
As a die hard I thank the glazer family for that..
Has the product been great on the field always..easy answer no…
But they switch coaches fast and demand excellence.
I believe in Jason more now then ever I think he’s done a good and at times a great job building competitive roster and trying to find a good coach for us.
Bruce Arians was a genius move and it paid off.
We gotta learn patience and planning.
The draft is we’re we build the nucleus and free agency is where you find missing pieces..you also trade players who don’t fit the scheme for those who do.
The glaciers have shown they will spend the money and have shown us championships.
I wish people stop with sake the team drama..or the sky falling skit…
We gotta get the cap issue fixed and see what we have in certain players.
Once we have money we award the talented players.
You don’t build success talking about trading your best players.
Mike evans for all intent and purpose should retire buc I think he’s proved to be the best buccaneer offense player in the history of the bucs I don’t know who I could compare to him other than Mike alstot.
