D’Onta Foreman An Upgrade
March 11th, 2023There is no way to spin it: The Bucs had a garbage running game last year.
Blame it on injuries. Blame it on inconsistency. Blame it on the offensive line (always a popular crutch). Blame it on an inept offensive coordinator who had no clue how to adjust (where is that guy working these days?).
As a result, the Bucs will have to upgrade the talent at running back. No, Joe’s not willing to shovel dirt in Rachaad White’s face. Far from it. But Joe will repeat that White was RB1b on the league’s worst rushing attack. So what are we talking about here?
Over at SI.com, Gilberto Manzano was looking at a smart signing for each NFL team as legal tampering begins Monday (illegal tampering was well underway at the combine last week). Manzano thinks Stinking Panthers running back D’Onta Foreman would be a nice signing by Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht.
Tampa Bay Buccaneers
• D’Onta Foreman, running back, PanthersThe Buccaneers averaged a league-low 76.9 rushing yards per game last season and don’t have enough cap space to chase the top free-agent running backs. But everyone knows by now that you don’t need to spend big to find quality running backs. Foreman knows how to move the chains and would be an affordable option for Tampa Bay.
Foreman should come cheap because he has a history with injuries. Drafted in 2017, Foreman playes his first full season last year. He’s also on the wrong side of 25. Once running backs get over 25, the closer they creep to 30, the slower they get. Once you lose your legs in the NFL, you are done.
Foreman is a very consistent runner, so long as he’s on the field. The only time he didn’t average in the mid-four-yards per carry was his second season in Texas. He got hurt in Week 2 and was out for the year..
So given Foreman’s injury history and age, he will be cheap.
Joe doesn’t know what kind of an upgrade Foreman is over Ke’Shawn Vaughn. Neither running back is going to freak out defenses with his pass-catching ability.

Doesn’t matter what RB you get. Besides Wirfs, this OLine can’t run block.
March 11th, 2023 at 12:50 am
Go. Get. Lamar.
March 11th, 2023 at 12:55 am
Byron was the core issue with the run game. He might’ve been the worst run-play designer in the league last year.
However if we had a decently mobile QB last year I bet our o-line would’ve been fine. The threat of a running QB opens up the entire playbook and opportunities for others.
But losing Ali and Jensen hurt us all around. That’s a fact, not a crutch. We went to a Super Bowl and won it because we had a healthy offensive line that happened to be one of the biggest in the league.
March 11th, 2023 at 1:10 am
They’re drafting one or two, I predict. Cheaper than buying a free agent with injury issues.
March 11th, 2023 at 1:12 am
Lamar sucks. Get over it. He would set this franchise back into another lost decade. Why waste money on this guy. To win one playoff game maybe. Watch him get injured and sit out a quarter to half of a season. Accept the fact that we will be awful this year and be drafting in the top 3 next year where hopefully we can get our franchise qb for the next decade. Doubtful but we can hope. Tampa I believe is only franchise to never re-sign a qb ever. That’s just unreal when ya think about. 5 decades and never had a qb worth keeping or re-signing.

First of all, NO.
Second, with what cap space? They just did major restructurings (which have future year consequences) just to get a couple million under the cap. There’s only about 3 other players we could do anything with through cuts or restructures to create any space, maybe another 12 million. Then you still don’t have the money to pay him… So, what do you do? You’d have to trade Mike Evans and/or Devin White to make this idiotic idea work.
Third, he wants a cap crippling guaranteed contract. Funk dat.
Fourth, bad passer, bad leader.
Fifth, in addition to having to unload other good players to make it happen, you gotta give up valuable draft assets to make this (already) sh!tty idea happen.
Sixth, no… just no.
March 11th, 2023 at 1:39 am
Used running back sale. No warranty. As is.
March 11th, 2023 at 1:42 am
Helllllll NOoooooooo ffs
March 11th, 2023 at 2:39 am
Hey Joe what’s it say on his pads? Can not make it out, doesn’t look like it makes any sense. Just curious.
March 11th, 2023 at 2:49 am
Actually like Foreman as a RB. Tough runner that brings good energy to the field, and a good short-yardage back who’d be a solid tandem with White. Almost 1k season last year too.
March 11th, 2023 at 2:53 am
“Blame it on injuries. Blame it on inconsistency. Blame it on the offensive line (always a popular crutch). Blame it on an inept offensive coordinator could had no clue how to adjust (where is that guy working these days?) if you wish.”
Um…. Joe I’ll take all of the above for 50 please…
March 11th, 2023 at 2:55 am
yes get lamar
March 11th, 2023 at 2:57 am
we’re good with white and sneak…
and add in maybe a more bruising back…
rashad penny would be nice
March 11th, 2023 at 3:51 am
Not getting Lamar. It’s not happening.
Bad passer, not a leader, injury prone, wants giant guaranteed money, requires trading other assets, probably will cause depletion at other positions, does not equal winning. But yeah, great idea.
Not happening.
March 11th, 2023 at 5:15 am
Joe … ‘Foreman should come cheap because he has a HISTORY WITH INJURIES.’
Have we learned nothing from our recent experiences with players who can’t stay on the field?
March 11th, 2023 at 5:18 am
Sasquatch … ‘They’re drafting one or two, I predict. Cheaper than buying a free agent with injury issues.’
B-I-N-G-O !!! Personally I’d take our 2 comp picks (Rnds 5 & 7) and use those to draft the best 2 RBs available when we pick.
March 11th, 2023 at 5:34 am
No RB is going to sign here unless we get a capable QB. If the front office keeps continuing with this support of the incapable Kyle Trask the we will kill our chance of any decent FAs coming here
March 11th, 2023 at 6:02 am
Lamar Jackson has led his team to a 45-16 record, winning an NFL MVP, leading his team to two playoffs, and winning a playoff game.
A NFL veteran retread QB on the cheap, Kyle Trask, AR-15, Hooker or some other unproven rookie with potential in this year’s draft or next year’s draft are not even in the same talent class as Lamar Jackson.
Steve Young was labeled a running QB who was not accurate, until he wasn’t, and when he had those labels he wasn’t nearly as successful as Lamar is at the same points in their careers.
March 11th, 2023 at 6:25 am
I think Canales would love to work on Lamar and get him to be a better (i.e. accurate) passer, BUT the $$$$ is too much of a hit as we had our boat parade and now we are paying the bill.
March 11th, 2023 at 6:29 am
Just watch one of Lamar’s press conferences.
March 11th, 2023 at 7:05 am
I usually don’t disparage other posters…..but those who support bringing in Lamar Jackson are absolute fools….
To give up 2 first round picks is one thing but we will be lucky to have enough cap to sign our draft class. It would put us in debt forever.
We need to get our financial house in order….if it takes a poor record in 23 to do it….so be it.
March 11th, 2023 at 7:09 am
For once, Tampabaybucfan is right.
March 11th, 2023 at 7:26 am
True Sasquatch. My question is why would we bring in a guy which has a injury prong career. There’s plenty good RB in the draft.
March 11th, 2023 at 7:42 am
We had two RB’s as starter last year. They both know how to ball and yet were still shut down. I don’t care who you have in the backfield last year, they would have been the RB1 on the worst rushing offense. The Oline was dreadful at run blocking. How many times did we see that line just crumble and Goedeke or Hainsey sprawled in the backfield within two seconds? We all know why- injuries, rookies, and coaching. No cohesion. No comprehension. No calibration.
Thankfully last year is done and we can look forward to this year. Goody remains in his spot as Oline coach, and I think it’s safe to say that he probably made a pretty convincing argument that it was Byron’s schemes that attributed to the failure, rather than his coaching methods. I believe that to be true also. Goody has a proven record so he stays. Fine. New OC coming in talking the run blocking talk and will, by all interviews this far, bring in a new scheme for Goody to work with. The rookies are no longer rookies and will have more power and mastery making them that much less likely to be turnstiled.
There are big giant question marks that remain for our oline but a number of things that were wrong in our running game last year should be overcome this coming year.
March 11th, 2023 at 8:01 am
Paying Lamar isn’t an issue he’s only 26, it’s what young franchise QBs cost, look at Danny Dimes n Carr contracts, LJ8 has never had the weapons we have, Canales made Geno a great passer n LJ is way better, and he won’t be expected to run for a 1000 yards in this offense like the Ravens offense so his injury risk would reduce, he also would give us national exposure on par with the Brady years, the 2 1st barely matter 19 and a late 1st next year, the most important part is Bowles n Licht have a better chance to keep their jobs beyond next year
March 11th, 2023 at 8:01 am
Did I miss it?
Has Jason Licht
Or the
Glazers
Addressed the fan base in this obviously a tumultuous year ahead.
Of course Not they are always reacting rather than leading.
March 11th, 2023 at 8:07 am
Seems to me that one of the Joe’s doesn’t understand player development at all. He was 1b behind Lenny so he must not be able to imporve…
March 11th, 2023 at 8:08 am
Improve*
March 11th, 2023 at 8:59 am
No on Foreman, yes for Tyjae Spears.
March 11th, 2023 at 9:05 am
Nice thought Joe’s. Foreman is a stud but perhaps Vaughn can be 90% for no cap hit. Money that Foreman would cost is better used for secondary or DL help.
March 11th, 2023 at 9:08 am
Pass…give Vaughn and White a chance to take the lead in camp, and draft a guy. This isn’t a team that is going to compete for a SB anyway. Let’s find out of some of these guys and Trask can compete? See what we really have with some of these guys. Why load up the cap with more high priced guys, when we can clean it up and really have the ability to reload and compete?
March 11th, 2023 at 9:18 am
Until you put a competent Oline in place none of this matters.
March 11th, 2023 at 9:29 am
Draft one maybe…but lets not make the cap cleaning more difficult, especially when this year is a chance to let these young guys play and actually see what we have.
March 11th, 2023 at 10:28 am
This reminds me of back in The Day when the Bucs were irrelevant in FA, and fans salivated over “Plan B”, Alvin Harper, and Bert Emmanuel.
Scraps.
March 11th, 2023 at 10:54 am
Yes, scraps. One healthy year in five?

Foreman, when healthy, has looked like a very good player. But RB’s are cheap, and he’ll be cheap, I’d certainly have no issues with signing him. He’s a very violent runner, could be a short yardage guy, but also can break runs.
I’m all in on White, I think he’s going to be a star, but you have to fill out your roster and Foreman, when healthy, has shown he can be a very good player.
March 11th, 2023 at 3:01 pm
This is a DEEP draft for RBs. Kendre Miller looked great – would be a great addition to the Bucs roster and can be had in the 3rd round.
March 11th, 2023 at 3:07 pm
@DefRules..I agree!! NO players with an injury history! Especially early in their careers. We should have firmly learned that last year. GEEZE.
March 11th, 2023 at 3:07 pm
Go get Freeman? And pay him with what? Monopoly money? We’re looking at dismantling the team this coming year.
March 11th, 2023 at 4:40 pm
NO CAROLINA RETREADS PLEASE !..DRAFT A BLUE CHIP ROOKIE RUNNING BACK & GET A BACK THAT HAS “NO PROBLEM” RUNNING & CATCHING THE BALL OTHERWISE IT’S ANOTHER WASTED ROSTER SPACE..NUFF’ SAID !
March 11th, 2023 at 4:57 pm
Chuba Hubbard would be a better choice. Probably not available.
March 11th, 2023 at 5:27 pm
Ya wonder if that had anything to do with Jason lichts ?
Worst line in the nfl

The guy would literally be competing for a roster spot – not the starting job. I don’t really care one way or the other about him, but he’s not going to make or break the roster, and has experience. If the team signs a QB and wants to compete this year, this isn’t a bad signing as he’s different than the rest of the roster. If we’re in full on rebuild mode, then it doesn’t matter.
March 11th, 2023 at 8:33 pm
Nobody is claiming Trask is better than the goat, but Brady is retired. Time to move on with a young QB – the guy you drafted for this eventuality. Life after Brady means the cap piper needs to be paid. You pay it by having a young QB.
3rd round is not a “top draft pick” and if you can find a starter there you drafted well. Personally I want to see them go after Daiyan Henley in the 3rd, but if it shook out and we came away with Kendre Miller I wouldn’t be mad.
March 11th, 2023 at 11:20 pm
No one drafted Trashk to replace Brady. He was drafted for his clipboard holding security.
March 12th, 2023 at 12:01 pm
The problems running where more the line and per Strouds inside knowledge…Leftwich just calling no scheme-involved 1st down runs to just pass, pass, pass because Bowles ordered him to run more ..yes they need a Fournette replacement but this Carolina back isn’t Deangelo Williams or Johnathan Stewart.
