Derek Carr Lands In New Orleans
March 6th, 2023The slimy Saints soon will be the new betting favorites to dethrone the Bucs as NFC South champions.
NFL Network is reporting that three-time Pro Bowl quarterback Derek Carr is about to sign with New Orleans. Carr was a true free agent because he was cut by the Raiders with years remaining on his contract last month, so he got to negotiate with teams prior to next Monday’s kickoff of free agency.
As usual, the Saints began this offseason tens of millions over the 2023 salary cap, but they’ve made various accounting moves and more are to come.
Joe doesn’t see the Saints as a great team, but they now possess the best quarterback in the division. That’s a key ingredient to opening the playoffs with a home game.
New Orleans recently restructured the contract of backup/gimmick quarterback Taysom Hill, who also plays tight end and receiver. So expect Jameis Winston to be cut soon. Jameis was the Saints opening day starting quarterback last season, but he got hurt and then was benched for Andy Dalton, who started their final 14 games.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:15 am
Carr is terrible. 1 playoff appearance in 9 year career and bombed this year with expectations and new coach. Carr is terrible with pressure up the middle. Just panics and tosses ball away. Let the saints enjoy his cap hit. Huge money for average Joe. And don’t just give him best QB I division. Wasn’t clear he was much better then stidham
March 6th, 2023 at 11:17 am
Thank goodness. That’s one less waste of money QB Joe needs to mention as our potential starter.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:17 am
No. No to Winston here. I would burn my Buc T-shirt.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:18 am
‘{the Saints} now possess the best quarterback in the division.’
Yep… That blows!
NOW whoever the Bucs sign will likely pale in comparison BUT with Bowles being a detriment to the team, who really believes a quality vet. qb lands here…
March 6th, 2023 at 11:18 am
Jameis just didn’t get a fair shot!….. lol
March 6th, 2023 at 11:20 am
How is it that the Aints always manipulate the cap to their advantage and we seldom….ah, very seldom do? If they want a player they always manage to get him. Is our cap management incapable? It just makes me uncomfortable being out maneuvered by other teams….as # 55 has always said ” if a team really wants a player they will get him”
March 6th, 2023 at 11:20 am
Good – let the New Orleans Taints overpay a mediocre QB $35M per season and totally screw their already screwed salary cap just to win 6-7 games in 2023…
March 6th, 2023 at 11:21 am
More reason to draft heavy on Defense
March 6th, 2023 at 11:22 am
And to think that Jamis was the #1 pick. I would hesitate to draft a QB from either UF, UM, or FSU for fear of homer bias. That is evidenced today by the desire of many here for Trask to be the QB despite a total lack of evidence that he would be successful. Putting the season, whatever it turns out to be, on Trask’s shoulders is a recipe for disaster.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:22 am
Ta da!
Bucs cry about the salary cap. Slimy Saints just find answers.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:22 am
Good!!!
NOLA might have a decent year and get bounced from the playoffs. All while creating even more cap hell for them down the road.
I like this move, for the Bucs.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:22 am
F Cam Jordan
March 6th, 2023 at 11:23 am
OK, so technically on paper, the Saints have the best QB in the division. That it’s Carr should tell you about the QBs in our division…they’re BAD!
Carr doesn’t scare me and Sean Payton is no longer the HC. Carr is an “upgrade” over Winston, but he’s a TO machine too.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:25 am
‘So expect Jameis Winston to be cut soon. ‘
I hear the Jets are desperate and prone to making BAD decisions!
March 6th, 2023 at 11:28 am
Given our cap woes, I’m glad he is off the table for Bucs consideration. Sure it may mean Saints will win the division this year but we need to be thinking about being competitive in 2024 and the years beyond. If we need to take lumps in 2023, so be it.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:29 am
Bucs will now probably sign Jameis to a multi year contract. OMG. Lol.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:30 am
I think we should sell the Farm and go get CJ.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:31 am
Maybe America’s QB will continue to make a NFC South tour and end up in Carolina or Atlanta
We couldn’t afford Carr…..and neither can the Saints…..it will cost them some players.
Stay the course……win or lose with Trask…..get our house in order.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:33 am
Folks. Carr had all pro players at WR, TE and RB. They stunk and he got benched. He had a coach that realized he couldn’t make pre and post snap reads. Relax. Let the saints hitch their wagon to him.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:39 am
Wow! Saints back on top. Saints 11-6 Bucs 4-13. If Bucs had Carr they would win 8 games. Folks, the Bucs are a below average team right now. It could be that way for a few years.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:42 am
Make way for the return of Jaymiss!
March 6th, 2023 at 11:42 am
Trask will be better than Carr.
Carr got arguably the best receiver in football and then promptly lost his job.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:43 am
Is Dennis Allen still the coach? Yes? Okay, then my concern is minimal.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:44 am
Saints going to have a really good offense but still have a crappy HC; if the aints RB gets out of trouble and gets that out of his system mentally then they will be back on top with a pretty easy schedule
March 6th, 2023 at 11:51 am
Going to be fun to watch the Bucs make Carr big mad. Maybe Cam Jordan can bicker about his new QB having a meltdown.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:57 am
Now let’s go draft a pass rusher that can put Mr. Carr on his rear end for a lot of sacks in the coming years. Go Bucs!
March 6th, 2023 at 11:59 am
“Bucs cry about salary cap – Saints just find answers.” A+ comment, and true if we’re being objective.
I’ll counter with this (and its picking nits maybe) – The saints methodologies would make more sense if they had/have a top 5 roster. They don’t, and they’re under the illusion (DELUSION) that theyre just a player or 2 away year OVER year. Annnnd what has it got them besides either getting bounced out of the first round or going 8-9? At some point, its not a bad thing to clear the books. Eagles did it the right way following their superbowl win in 2018 and their situations is much MUCH more tenable than the Saints yearly house of cards act
March 6th, 2023 at 11:59 am
I wouldn’t count Jaymiss out. I would not be surprised if Jason signs him to a one year cheap prove contract with the idea that Trask starts. Should be interesting to see what happens. I would prefer Brissett or Geno, but they might be available at the price the Bucs want to pay.
March 6th, 2023 at 12:03 pm
Licht might give Jameis a prove it deal. Don’t say he will not. But Carr man, he is below 500. Not a great move for them Saints. If Jameis is better than Trask, Play him. But I do think our safe bet is Brissett.
March 6th, 2023 at 12:12 pm
Everyone pumping up the Saints and complaining about the Bucs. Up until 2017 the Saints were the Kings of 7-9. If the Bucs did that 4 Years in a row there would have been screaming for the Bucs to fire their Coach. Everyone on here was screaming to get Payton (as ridiculous as those comments were). Stop looking at the Bucs in a Vacuum. Bucs have 2 SBs Saints have 1. Im always of the thought that you either win the SB or you dont. 31 losers every year.
March 6th, 2023 at 12:14 pm
Saints just find answers? Answers to what? In the last 20 years they have only had good teams with Brees at quarterback and Peyton as coach. And even some of those teams were middling. I remember a run of seven and nine seasons not that long ago. Those two very important variables are now gone. Does anyone really think the Saints are a Derek Carr away from being a championship team? No way. We have a great cap guy. I’m sure we could manipulate the cap the way they do if we wanted to bring in a c+ quarterback. Instead we did it when we had an A quarterback as we’ve done the last few years with Brady. Nothing spectacular was done here by the Saints. They arguably overpaid for a quarterback that probably ranks in the 15 to 20 range out of all 32 starters. Congratulations.
March 6th, 2023 at 12:28 pm
@ Richard/JOE
“How is it that the Aints always manipulate the cap to their advantage and we seldom….ah, very seldom do?”
The real answer is:
It depends on the number of contracts a team is able to restructure in a given off season.
The Saints have @ 12-13 contracts they are able to restructure in order to gain needed cap space…
The Bucs only have 5-6 contracts they are able to restructure.
It isn’t “rocket science”. The most cap space the Bucs will have this off season after restructuring several contracts and making several cuts will be @ $35M tops…
It isn’t “just finding a way to get it done” – that is a silly answer Joe.
March 6th, 2023 at 12:30 pm
Now some of you are just on such and extreme side of the spectrum it’s hard to even entertain any level of nuance.poking at it as simply “you either with the Super Bowl or you don’t” sooo dense frankly. Being competitive and relevant (key word RELEVANT) yr over yr and going in to most yrs knowing you have a chance is far more impressive than finding lightening in a bottle once every 20yrs. Two things can be true, yes the Bucs have 2 superbowls. Great, awesome. But the saints business practice is different, and they DO find answers . Yeah we got a Super Bowl, but at what cost. Are you willing to have another lost decade? That’s some real loser shi. Being relevant yr over yr is how you REALLY gain respectability as an organization and becoming a household name.
March 6th, 2023 at 12:37 pm
Jameis Winston.
Fool me once Jameis, shame on you. Fool me twice Jameis, no F’ing way.
March 6th, 2023 at 12:38 pm
About time for Carolina to sign AR. Then we can play for third place in the division. It is, a Bucs life.
March 6th, 2023 at 12:46 pm
Frankly, to me this just ups the ante in Carolina. We know they already contacted GB about AR. So now do they step up to compete with this Saints move, or do they step up? Vegas, Carolina, the Jets? I still think the Jet’s or Vegas. But I’m an optimist.
March 6th, 2023 at 12:48 pm
correction…Or do they step away and probably compete with the Bucs for second place in the division?
March 6th, 2023 at 12:55 pm
Cap jail isnt real. Not anymore anyway. It’s entirely dependent on what the owner wants to do. Throwing good money after bad, isn’t how many of these owners operate. It’s always doable to get under the cap. The real question is real money in and out. If you know you can’t win, why spend in that year.
.
March 6th, 2023 at 1:08 pm
I guess there is no more “America’s Quarterback”
It is now officially “Jameis WinsDone”
March 6th, 2023 at 1:17 pm
Carr is getting $11 million more than Winston was, though the deal will be structured to fit the salary cap.
The Saints are the second team to give up on Winson (Mariotta has had 3 give up on him).
March 6th, 2023 at 1:18 pm
I would be okay with Winston coming back to compete for the job against Trask.
I think he’s familiar with the organization and players like Mike n Chris.
In a weak division he could be a issue the nfc south.
Definitely would be a great back up for the kid.
March 6th, 2023 at 1:23 pm
Yeah they need to tell me again how Kyle Trask is the best quarterback in the division. Oops!
March 6th, 2023 at 1:31 pm
Bring back America’s quarterback, please !! let’s do it again !!
March 6th, 2023 at 1:33 pm
Lee ( Joe ) get your pen out and tell us all how much we need to re-sign Jameis!
March 6th, 2023 at 1:33 pm
I’d rather take any of the other 60+ rostered quarterbacks over Winston again.
March 6th, 2023 at 1:37 pm
Sure wish! Bowles would never sign him though. 🙁
March 6th, 2023 at 1:37 pm
Offer jaymiss a platter of 🦀 🦵 to be our 3rd stringer….sorry, couldn’t help myself…
March 6th, 2023 at 1:48 pm
This OC wants to protect the football. That eliminates Jameis Winston 1,000,000%.
March 6th, 2023 at 2:03 pm
Is it possible that Jameis has matured? Is he capable of relaxing? Could he even act like a professional during pre-game hype?
March 6th, 2023 at 2:08 pm
This is outstanding…The Taints just got a Used Carr Lemon…un-clutch and annoyingly “rah rah” when getting the job done would do.
As the Bucs #1 hated rival…this bodes well for the future. He’ll get even worse and cost a lot of money while doing so.
Any comeback “but…he was a pro bowler!” simply means the top 4-5 other AFC QB’s were either deep into the playoffs or opted out.
March 6th, 2023 at 2:20 pm
Remarkable how they’re $50m over the cap and still got this done. I hope his deal bankrupts their cap for the next half-decade. As for Carr, I didn’t want him, but he’s not bad – he’s just not good, and cares first and foremost about his stats, which is why so many casual low IQ football fans think he’s good, because they just look at the stat sheet and nothing else.
As for Carr, currently, he’s the best QB in the NFC South, which is a sad state of affairs for the division.
March 6th, 2023 at 2:34 pm
This organization is not interested in competing or winning this season. They are going to let the cupboard clear of talent and go back to selling hope to our fan base. We will be back to being competitive in just a couple short decades. Licht’s seat is likely just as hot as Bowles this season. Bad move. If I was the front office people I would not be looking to save cap space, because it is understood that I will not be around to take advantage of those cap savings the next season. Wondering if this franchise is being postured for sale once they clean house next season.
March 6th, 2023 at 3:32 pm
HAPPY BUCS FAN!
Carr will cost the Saints a lot of $$$. They’re $50M over the cap. They’ll need to cut talent and they haven’t solved their coaching problem.
This is a setback.
March 6th, 2023 at 3:36 pm
So all the genius sports writers and commentators in the Tampa market spent last two months screaming at Bucs fans to be realistic because “we can’t afford a good QB!” But the Saints who are in even worse cap hell than the Bucs just signed a QB for $150 million.
March 6th, 2023 at 3:44 pm
Because the Bucs do want to be competitive…they didn’t load up on a Used Carr with many o’ recalls. There’s a reason The Raiders pulled the plug on him. They know. Dutch Boy Davis probably still mad Chunky nixed the Brady signing.
March 6th, 2023 at 3:54 pm
Jerry Says … the Saints who are in even worse cap hell than the Bucs just signed a QB for $150 million.
======
Actually the Bucs are literally the one team in the NFL in worse cap space than the Bucs.
March 6th, 2023 at 4:09 pm
“the Saints always find answers”
No they just keep pushing their cap issues into future years and consistently have to do maneuvering like what the Bucs did the last few years. The bucs can fix all their cap issues this season by not getting guys like Carr. I’d rather fix the cap issue this year and Build on what we have.
March 6th, 2023 at 4:13 pm
beat out by J Stidham
that is a lot of money to pay for Carr
March 6th, 2023 at 4:14 pm
Well said Steven007.
Even my good Saints friends aren’t jumping up and down. Division favorites for sure, about it.
March 6th, 2023 at 4:17 pm
Please, move on from Whoopsie Daisy Jameis… if we are searching back in Bucs history, I’d rather have FitzMagic hired to push Trask.
March 6th, 2023 at 4:22 pm
If you brought back Winston, you might as well trade Trask. It would be nothing but a QB controversy in the making. UF fans Vs. FSU fans. Just what the Bucs need.
March 6th, 2023 at 4:52 pm
Bucs are doing the right thing going young. You never know, there may be an athletic QB that drops and the Bucs get one of the top 5 QB’s.
No more “has-been’s” or “never been” like Winston. He is jumpy and very easy for defensive players to anticipate where he is going with the ball. No thanks, first time was enough with him. He will no longer be a starter in the NFL. I’m not sure he makes a roster with all his injuries.
Licht is going to have to do some dealing to get some more draft picks. He shouldn’t do anything stupid like trade a premium player for 3rd and 4th round picks but if there are any offers for 1st or 2nd’s he has to be open to listening.
March 6th, 2023 at 6:00 pm
Derrick Carr will make the saints the 8th or 9th seed for a playoff run . Wich means the saints ain’t going to the playoffs. And the reason why is they are going to make him throw 40 times a game!!
March 6th, 2023 at 6:59 pm
That one is going to bite us in the butts. He’s better than people around here give him credit for.
That said…it all depends on their coaching I suppose at this point.
March 6th, 2023 at 7:00 pm
On the other hand…they’ll have to release someone who might be worth going after.
March 6th, 2023 at 9:07 pm
The Saints don’t manipulate the cap to their advantage. What have they gotten out of it? Last I checked, it was the Bucs who beat the Saints on their way to win the superbowl. Saints have been pushing money into the future for years without any results.
March 6th, 2023 at 10:09 pm
Go ahead and celebrate. Carr is a loser. A perennial loser despite being given countless resources and time, from surrounding talent to coaches.
This puts the Saints on the highway to long-term mediocrity. Joe is sad about this, for no good reason.
March 6th, 2023 at 11:45 pm
Career Record 63-79. Enough said. You don’t bankrupt your team for a QB with one winning season. New Orleans will not win the Division. 86 QB rating. You know what you’re getting with Carr. Meh!
