Predicting The Bucs’ Starting Quarterback
March 3rd, 2023Joe agrees with this.
Over at BSPN, Field Yates has been stalking in the cavernous Indiana Convention Center (nee: Hoosier Dome) and prowling the downtown Indianapolis bars and hotel gin joints trying to piece together what each quarterback-needy team will do this fall.
Yates seems to have answers, or at least the clubhouse leader for each team as of March 3, 2023.
For the Bucs, he says Kyle Trask is their man.
Joe sees and hears the Bucs talking about bringing in a cheap veteran quarterback. Well, the only reason a veteran is cheap is because nobody wants him. Or at least, no decent team. Or the guy doesn’t want to be an expensive backup. So the guy is pretty much out of options and willing to take whatever breadcrumbs a team throws his way for a chance to start.
The Bucs, “this Joe” believes, will sink or swim with Trask. If Trask turns out to be all that, meaning the Bucs trust putting a postseason on his shoulders, then so be it.
If Trask stinks out loud, the Bucs will have a top-6 pick next spring in the draft, maybe better, and have a shot to land Drake Maye. Or, if the lottery numbers land right, Caleb Williams (#CollaspeForCaleb).

I’d sure love to see Trask do well, but he hasn’t exactly WOWed anybody yet.
March 3rd, 2023 at 5:48 am
Here’s to hoping the Bucs finally have a young, franchise QB!
Here’s to hoping the “Tom Brady Effect” helped Trask develop these last two years. Go Bucs!
March 3rd, 2023 at 6:09 am
That pic of Bowles makes me think he’s the King of Zamunda.
Very colorful.
March 3rd, 2023 at 6:16 am
All I’m gonna say is remember JayMiss! He was rumored to be a franchise QB. If you tank, be careful what you ask for
March 3rd, 2023 at 6:32 am
Tom Brady didn’t wow anybody het as a sixth round draft pick and backup, until he actually started some games with the first stringers. And even then he didn’t really “wow” much, passing for only 2,845 yards, 18 TD to 12 INT, and a passer rating of only 86.5. But it was enough for the Pats to win a Super Bowl with him., and with a defensive head coach to boot.
Its really about the talent surrounding the quarterback, and what the team asks him to do – be a hero, or just distribute the ball and not turn it over.
By the way, The GOAT never broke a passer rating of 100 until his 8th season in the league.

Joe(s) seem to be in love with Caleb Williams — I simply want to remind them that they were head-over-heels in love with Johnny Football —-

This is a billion dollar franchise that had super bowl hopes to now excepting that its OK to suck???? How does that business model work?? How many sellouts next year?? Force season ticket holders to a two year commitment knowing they would suck not to mention raising ticket prices. How is it that only the Bucs can figure out how to go from first to worst in less than a year. Winning franchises work harder when their backs are against the wall the bucs just throw their hands up in the air and say ” well, we knew this day would come, oh well maybe we can get a good qb next year. Lol “maybe”???? Bad planning, bad business plan. It’s a bucs life lol.

BucsfanFred Says: “He hasn’t exactly WOWed anybody yet.”
1. He hasn’t exactly taken a single snap with the starters yet. Oh, wait, I forgot, only Tom Brady is affected by who he plays with, right?
2. The Bucs coaches sure seem to like what they have seen. Super Bowl winning Bruce Arians, for example, recently said: “I think we’re in good hands with Kyle Trask. He’s got all the size, he’s got the arm, he’s got the stature of what we like. And he’s mobile. Now, he’s not a burner, but he’s mobile enough to do some things.”

Duane Says: “Tom Brady didn’t wow anybody as a sixth round draft pick and backup, until he actually started some games with the first stringers.”
Excellent point. Brett Favre too. He was 0-4 with 2 INTs his first season with the Falcons, was told by Falcons coach Jerry Glanville he would never make it in the NFL, and was traded to the Packers.

Thomas Edrington Says: “Joe(s) seem to be in love with Caleb Williams — I simply want to remind them that they were head-over-heels in love with Johnny Football.”
They sure were. And Jameis Winston too. Check out just a few of the things they said about those two first-round losers:
JOE(S): “Johnny Manziel has been the finest playmaker in college football over the last two years. Your eyes tell you the kid can play. Regular readers here know Johnny Football is Joe’s preferred pick. It would be an outstanding move for the Bucs to draft Johnny Football.”
JOE(S): “Joe is a big fan of America’s Quarterback, Bucs signal-caller Jameis Winston. Regular readers probably got that impression when Joe began banging the drum daily for the Bucs to draft Jameis.”
JOE(S): “Like a fire and brimstone preacher, the legend of America’s Quarterback, Jameis Winston, grows with each passing week.”
JOE(S): “Joe can’t emphasize enough the respect brewing at One Buc Palace for Jameis.”

Trask needs a chance to fail before anyone gives him a failing grade.
March 3rd, 2023 at 7:52 am
TampaBayBucsFan I agree 100%. As a gator fan, I’ll turn on him if he is given an honest chance and sucks, but give the kid a chance. He’ll never be cheaper than he is right now.
March 3rd, 2023 at 7:57 am
Jacoby Brisset is the veteran QB I would like to see come in and challenge Trask.
March 3rd, 2023 at 8:01 am
BucBoy how much does Trask pay you to be his yes man?
March 3rd, 2023 at 8:09 am
Maybe but probably not
March 3rd, 2023 at 8:20 am
they need to bring in minshew
March 3rd, 2023 at 8:22 am
Well this off-season is Trask’s first real opportunity. He has just as much chance to be named the starter as whichever rookie the Bucs draft and whichever veteran the Bucs sign.
March 3rd, 2023 at 8:35 am
Propping up Kyle Trask is a reliable smokescreen, so when draft season rolls through and phones start ringing, there’s leverage to be had if certain teams aren’t thinking or expecting you to pick their guy. The less details you provide outside of what is required, the better position you are to wheel and deal.
March 3rd, 2023 at 8:36 am
Duane, Brady didn’t play the full season. Looks like Carr maybe heading to the Saints. Advantage NO, AGAIN!
March 3rd, 2023 at 8:45 am
This was reported here months ago. Geez, now Joe is finally listening? This has always been the plan from whne they drafted Trask.
March 3rd, 2023 at 8:46 am
I wonder what Baker Mayfield will command $ wise
March 3rd, 2023 at 8:49 am
So if the Panthers get AR at QB, and NO gets a real QB, we might not have to worry about tanking for almost anyone coming out of college football in the draft after the end of next season.
March 3rd, 2023 at 8:53 am
NE Fan – you are wrong. Tom Brady DID play nearly the entire season, he played in 15 out of 16 games, and 14 starts. And his numbers are his numbers – they’re still mediocre in yards, TDs, INTs, TD/INT ratio, and passer rating. All the important stats for QBs.
He didn’t break 100 in passer rating til his 8th season in the league. He didn’t break a pedestrian 4,000 yards passing until his 6th season in the league.
March 3rd, 2023 at 9:09 am
Geez, all this hindsight from the experts is just as lame as the expert forcasters.
Every draft pic is a crap shoot. I am also going to pull for every Bucs player to succeed and don’t give a crap what school they went to. They don’t go there any more.
March 3rd, 2023 at 9:18 am
Duane … ‘Its really about the talent surrounding the quarterback, and what the team asks him to do’.
Duane gets it; others need to stop with the ‘Tom Brady this & Tom Brady that’ stuff. He’s retired, as in ‘Not coming back’. The 2023 Bucs won’t be about Kyle Trask. They’ll be about the TEAM of players that we surround him with. Back in 2020 we surrounded Tom Brady with an all-star cast. We expected a lot, and we got a lot. Last year his supporting cast wasn’t nearly as good. Many still expected a lot, but those expectations weren’t even close to being met.
It’s the TEAM that wins Super Bowls, not individual players. I admittedly don’t have high expectations for this year’s Bucs TEAM, mostly because of our horrendous salary CAP situation, but I’ll gladly be pleasantly surprised if we perform well.
March 3rd, 2023 at 9:33 am
Beej, you have any facts to contribute or just drivel?
March 3rd, 2023 at 10:00 am
I’m not a gator fanatic or Trask supporter. I think we should let him play. He’s on a rooking contract for the next two years with a 5th year team option. Now, in his third year he will be learning a new offense so we have to treat him as a rooking all over again. Allow him the time to develop while building a solid team around him. He he fails, then we can draft another QB but the team will be rebuilt.
March 3rd, 2023 at 10:14 am
I get a laugh out of those who say trask hasn’t wowed anybody. What was the sum total of his opportunities. Once Brady came on to the scene, The only way you were going to see any other quarterback was an injury.
March 3rd, 2023 at 10:55 am
Chance are more likely it will end up the curse of Caleb Williams!
(remembering the Bucs last Top qb pick)….
March 3rd, 2023 at 11:18 am
Duane, you are correct didn’t realize Bledsoe left that early in the season. Brady STARTED 14 games and went 11-3. Doubt Trask will have the same success. According to the haters on this site, stats mean nothing it’s about W’s.
March 3rd, 2023 at 11:54 am
If you agree with this article then the Bucs aren’t looking at QB Hooker from TN. If they draft a QB, it will most likely be a 6th or 7th round pick.
March 3rd, 2023 at 12:05 pm
Ask BucBoy about the oline or a DE and he has nothing to say.
Mention Trask…and he’ll type for days.
Maybe a relative or something.
March 3rd, 2023 at 12:15 pm
@Buc1987
Poor baby’s got nothing substantive to say so he engages in ad hominems. Must be an FSU fanboi.
March 3rd, 2023 at 12:20 pm
Hilarious!
March 3rd, 2023 at 1:17 pm
Odds are Trask will fail, based upon nothing but the fact MOST QB’s fail out of college. Bills drafted 4 or 5 before they hit on Allen. Jets haven’t hit on one since Broadway Joe. If Kyle is even as successful as Mac Jones I’ll be a happy man
March 3rd, 2023 at 1:58 pm
Trask was an okay QB at Florida, but not spectacular. He should be given a chance, but I see him as backup and not as a starter. However, since Todd Bowles will manage to muck up the 2023-2024 season, we should get a decent pick for the 2024 draft. I just hope we don’t become basement dwellers again. We’ve already lost Fournette and Brate is on his way out. Looks like we’ll be limping along for the next year or two until they bring in a new HC. Go Bucs.
March 3rd, 2023 at 3:01 pm
Beej, Chad Pennington was a pretty good QB, his injuries killed his career.
March 3rd, 2023 at 3:32 pm
True, fair point. I had high hopes for Vinny that one season where he broke his leg or whatever
March 3rd, 2023 at 4:55 pm
It is my understanding Trask is the only QB on the roster now. That means they have to bring in at least 2 more for camp and keep at least 1 on the team. With the cap situation I suspect they will go cheap. Drew Lock would come very cheap but he is looking for a chance to start, otherwise he will just resign in Seattle where he already knows the system. Drew may already know the system the new OC is bringing so that is a good fit.
Drew never really had a chance in Denver with those crappy coaches and he was winning in Seattle until he got covid. If Bucs bring Drew in I wouldn’t be surprised to see him beat out Trask. He’s had some really bad luck and has learned a lot along the bumpy road. If Trask beats out Drew then he has to be more than just trash. Either way, it’s a win win for the Bucs.
If the Bucs bring in somebody like Mayfield or Jimmy G, it’s going to cost them a lot more and the end result isn’t going to be much better.
I bet the Bucs draft a QB in a later round and bring in Drew to push Trask. If anything, Drew would be helpful to Trask to learn the new offense.
