No Read-Options For Kyle Trask

February 23rd, 2023

Smart ideas.

Yesterday, offensive coordinator Dave Canales, making his public debut as the new Bucs offensive shot-caller, was stoked about working with Kyle Trask as the starting quarterback.

Canales also confessed that because Trask is the lone quarterback signed for 2023, Canales can’t build an offense for a ghost. So Trask it is (for now).

But Canales seriously seemed hyped about him. He believes he can get Trask to work outside of the pocket, though check yourself if you think Trask will be Canales’ version of Lamar Jackson. There will be no read-option packages for Trask.

“Yeah, so with Kyle. the QB run stuff, QB-read stuff won’t be a big feature of what we do,” Canales said. “But as far as everything else that we do in terms of the play-actions and the keeper game, he’s plenty athletic enough.

“He’s got short-space quickness. If you guys remember, his Florida tape, the protection wasn’t always great. And he just had a really gritty, savvy way of moving in tight spaces to get the ball gone to his players. So, he’s got plenty of athleticism to run our system.

“There’s really no concern for me there with Kyle.”

Joe knows Trask sure didn’t run in practices and rarely did in those immoral preseason slop games when Bucco Bruce Arians was running the show, or by proxy, failed Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich.

Joe thinks it’s cool that Canales sees ways of utilizing Trask to create more headaches for defenses that were never contemplated before.

Canales thinks I’m cans versus can’ts. Love that about him. I 100% guarantee you’ll never see him in a stupid flat brim hat with a dumb, clueless look on his face.

    Love this hire!

“Ding dong the wich is dead!”

  2. Joe Swanson Says:

I watched Trask in many games at Florida the only planned running was quartetback sneak. Unless hes changed since college hes not amy more mobile than Brady. Hes strictly a pocket passer starting to sound like the preseason BS has started.

  3. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    Kyle Trask time baby!!!!!

    – A High draft pick that could never crack a backup QB role

    – A Quaterback’s coach who could never crack an offensive coordinator job under Pete Carrol in 13 years as a coach

I mean…..what could go wrong this season??????????

  4. TheBucsAnthem Says:

    ^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^^

Talk about being “place holders” and not giving a crap about this franchise this season……

    ….typical Glazers boys style

But never Malcom….if he was still running things around here.

  5. Firethecannons Says:

Use Trask for 2023. If it doesn’t work out hopefully we can get rid of Todd bowls and use our first round pick number one overall on a new quarterback.

  6. Stebobucsfan Says:

Sounds like a plan to me. Waiting to see who they bring in to compete or back up Trask. Also hope the Bucs are able to keep most of their core players.

  7. Beej Says:

There’s RUNNING, and then there’s simply avoiding the rush. Anyhow, the guy is growing on me

  8. George R Says:

It’s simple. Roll with Trask. One or two things will happen. Trask will perform well and we have our QB of the future or he will blow and we will be set up with a high draft pick in 2024. We sign a FA QB we wind up 8-9 and will be selecting 17 in 2024

  9. Dooley Says:

Possessing mobility as a QB, and being a threat as a running QB aren’t necessarily the same thing. Easy to confuse, but Aaron Rodgers in his prime was good at using his mobility to extend his time to throw/manipulate his protection, but at no point can I ever remember him getting into the open field making guys miss or out running defenders like a Lamar Jackson would.

I wouldn’t expect to see Trask running the read option as a pro, as he doesn’t have the speed to be sent on a designed run often and be a threat to run away from anybody w/o thinking of the greater risk of him being clobbered/injured in the open field. Doesn’t mean we can’t ever send him on a designed run in our short yardage or GL package. Running away isn’t a strength Trask brings to the table as an athlete, but he’s for sure got enough mobility to run RPOs, waggles, bootlegs off play action, rollouts, pin plays, and anything else to mix our offensive bag up & make him a hard target for defenders.

  10. Allbuccedup Says:

Caleb Williams mentioned three teams he would like to play for and the Bucs were not on the list. But the Falcons were.

  11. Hodad Says:

I just watched Canales presser, and came away impressed. Listening to him explain things was night, and day better then listening to Lefty. If leftwich was as condisenting to his players as he was to the press it’s no wonder they looked out of sinc, and tuned out on game days. We’ll see how this guy fairs, but I like the choice.

  12. Guzzie Says:

Trask starts lose your job and get a high pick, Brissettish type go 8-9 win your division and maybe keep your job, which option you think Bowles/Licht take, oh wait they need your opinion

  13. Buc4evr Says:

Canales is certainly positive on Trask. I have seen him play at UF, not so impressive. Had a few good games but not NFL material. From what I have read he has had a hard time learning the offense after two years. If Canales is installing a new offense, I question how much Trask can learn in a relatively short time.

  14. Patrickbucs Says:

Was not impressive at Florida his last year? You didn’t watch him play, cmon Bucs4evr. Set Gators td and yardage record in a shortened season against only SEC teams. You sound like Colin Cowherd, that talks but does not watch.

  15. Infomeplease Says:

Wow imagine that.. build the offense around the players you have.

  16. Duane Says:

“Mobility” in quarterbacks is NOT planned runs. Mobility in a quarterback is the ability to sense and evade pressures, to move up in the pocket, or to move to ths side and break out of the pocket as necessary to avoid the sack. That takes athleticism.

Depending upon quarterbacks to be a major part of the running attack is just plain dumb football, a good way to get the guy injured and out of the lineup. Jackson started only 12 games last season due to his running-related injuries. Josh Allen missed two games due to injury. Both quarterbacks lost efficiency even when they started due to injuries suffered during planned runs.

Kyle Trask, on the other hand, started all 12 regular season games plus bowl games both of his seasons at Florida as a starter.

Tom Brady also never missed a game due to injury with the Bucs in his three seasons here, and he was oft criticized as a “statue in the pocket”.

Kyle Trask mostly reminds me of Brett Favre, with his ability to move around in the pocket and evade sacks (though Kyle is a LOT more careful with the ball than Favre was). Favre was known as the “iron man” for his 20 years in the league, going 17 straight seasons without missing a start … even though he took a lot more sacks in the NFL per pass attempt than Trask did.

  17. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

WTF retread QB do any of you know it alls think is going to lead the Bucs to the promise land? None, nada. Go inexpensive this year on what ever QB. Save some money, work on the cap pinch, payoff the super bowl run, balance the Bucs check book. Be prepared to then make some real progress moving forward.

  18. Duane Says:

    Patrickbucs – exactly!!!

How can Trask leading the entire nation in passing yards (4,283) and passing touchdowns (43), only 8 INT, throwing for nearly 4,300 yards in only 12 games – equivalent to passing for over 6,000 yards in a 17 game NFL season, which no quarterback has ever done, NOT be “impressive”?

Wow, some of these guys have impossible standards.

Trask was impressive in college. This is the pros.

Love the enthusiasm and positive vibes coming from Canales…..this is a huge move for him….moving his family from the west coast….

How can you not root for this guy’s success…

As far as Trask goes….the same applies….he has waited behind Brady….has no wear on his tires……he too, has waited his turn.

I really like the way you guys weite off Trask before he’s played in a NFL game. For God’s sake give the kid a chance. Of course I don’t think promoting Lewis to QB coach is going to help, but we’ll see.

I’m sure there will be A LOT of “(name free agent QB here) IS TERRIBLE!!” on here, but we have to keep in mind that Geno Smith wasn’t good before he got to Seattle. I even have some level of hope for Kyle Trask under Canales.

I don’t have anything against Trask, but I also don’t have loyalty to any college team like some do. Open QB competition, may the best man win.

See what you got year. Would like to see another contestant in the mix at low cost and young enough to have some upside. Darnold, trybyski. Nobody worth giving snaps to will be there at 19.

  27. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    “His arm is just adequate.”

“A pocket passer who will compete for a practice squad spot.”

“…fell due to his perceived lack of mobility. Most teams were put off by his lack of mobility. He ran a 5.28-second 40-yard dash, which remains one of the slowest in the NFL since the turn of the millennium.”

All of these things were said of Tom Brady. Mobility outside the pocket means little. It’s just exciting to watch.

Mobility inside the pocket is what matters. Instincts. Reading a defense. Smart throws.

It might seem like mobile QBs is the way of the future…but I’ll take the Brady way any time.

Trask is no Brady…but that doesn’t mean he cannot eventually become as good. It’s up to him to prove it…if he actually gets a chance…which I’m doubting at this point.

  28. BucBoy Says:

Unlike too many Bucs fans, Canales understands that few running backs can play quarterback well (see list of Super Bowl winners since 2000), and that Trask is not a running back. I like the guy.

  29. BucBoy Says:

Wow, the more Canales says about Trask the more hair Joe, Rod Munch, and Goatfarmer pull out of their heads. LMAO

  30. Tampa Chuck Says:

If I was GM for a day:
    1. Bring in an above average veteran QB to compete with Trask for starting job.
    2. If Trask wins the QB1 in camp,, play him all season and see what he is capable of with both WRs Evans and Godwin.
    3. Get rid of the most expensive, weakest link on the OL (sorry not sorry Donovan Smith). Playoff Lenny is probably gone.
    4. Draft OL and DL early in the draft. Another RB in the mid round.
    5. If all else fails in 2023, we’ll get a new HC and draft a QB early in the 1st rd in ‘24.

If he deserves a chance, earns a chance. I don’t think he should be given anything, including a roster spot, unless he deserves it.

  32. gp Says:

San Fran built their team around the trenches with an emphasis on a strong running game.
How far have they been going with “less than premier” QB’s?
Building a team around a premier QB is difficult due to the price of that premier QB (usually).
Building a solid TEAM that just about ANY QB can lead is a better recipe for success IMO.

  37. Smooth Bay Rider Says:

What makes all you people think Trask is just some bum QB who can’t win , when you’ve never seen the guy throw to somebody like Mike Evans, or Chris Godwin , or seen him work behind a starting offensive line ? I’m really curious to know what it is that you guys have seen that makes him so terrible….

Nobody outside of the chiefs organization knew how good Pat Mahommes was until he finally got a chance to start in year 2. He sat behind Alex Smith (not Tom Brady) for his rookie year, starting just one game at the end of the season. A game where he had 0 TD and 1 int. And before any of you illiterates jump on here and tell me that I can’t compare Patrick Mahomes to Kyle Trask, I’m not. I’m comparing the Bucs organization to the Chiefs, and Mahomes’ and Trask’s situations.

  38. BucBoy Says:

I gotta say, it’s been fun watching the haters melt down these past weeks with Arians, Christensen, and now Canales saying positive things about Trask.

  39. Smooth Bay Rider Says:

    @Joe in Michigan.

What did Mahomes do to earn his Job after sitting behind Alex smith for a year ?
They Brought in Chad Henne as a backup, and Andy Reid gave Mahomes the keys to the offense all off season and Training camp. The Bucs want to squeeze every ounce of skill and talent and give their young QB the best possible chance to succeed. (What team wouldn’t? ) Splitting first team reps isn’t going to give a young QB the best chance to run a successful offense.

    a) The fact that he was 3rd string behind Gabbert

I’m sure some of you will try to use the ridiculous excuse that Tom Brady was somehow scared or threatened by Trask being 2nd string.

Alright, what makes you think Trask is good? Because he was in college? A lot of guys are good in college, this is the NFL. Maybe Trask will wind up being good/decent, I hope so.

  46. Craig Says:

So far I think Canales has a chance. He can see reality well enough to know he can make Trask be something.

I have high hopes for Trask because he doesn’t have to be taught a touch pass.

So far it sounds like he just has to go through progressions and move the pocket if he needs to.

It is the height of ignorance to think any untested QB could replace TB12,

Can someone explain to me what wokeness has to do with football.

It’s a good question. For those living in the bubble of FuxNooz disinformation and resentment, it’s apparently in everything. Oh no, there’s a scary woke liberal around every corner ready to take rights away from all the decent straight white xtian people! Fear-mongering has infested their brains.

So because the Bucs had a veteran backup behind the goat Tom Bradyeans that trask isn’t good ? That’s nonsensical. Did you ever think Maybe Tom Brady wanted another veteran presence in his QB room to help him study ? A second set of eyes if you will……. I can promise you that Trask being 3rd string had absolutely nothing to do with performance in camp or practice and everything to do with studying and watching film.

  50. Rand Says:

take rights away from all the decent straight white xtian people! Fear-mongering has infested their brains.

Unfortunately, quite a bit. See the Rooney Rule, which is an NFL dictate that imposes interviewing quotas on teams based on the color of the interviewee’s skin, not the content of the interviewee’s character. That’s pure racism. Wokeness is also seen in the hyping of players.

  53. Bucfan94 Says:

We were told pretty much from day 1 they didn’t plan for Trask to play as long as we had Brady. And while we had Brady, they got Gabbert as he has experience and they had a loaded roster, and dished out a lot of money for the SB. Trask was NEVER competing. The plan was to sit him and learn, while bucs had Brady, chasing rings. Now that Brady is gone he will definitely compete at the very least for the job. And he’s never played behind anything more than the 3rd stringers in any game. I’m not saying he will be good, nor bad. But just see what happens.

  54. Goatfarmer Says:

Joe in Michigan nailed it. Trask will need to earn it. So far all he’s earned is a 3rd string roster spot behind Blaine “Watch Daddy Sling It” Goobert and vacant platitudes from coaches and players who were supposed to say…..what? That he sucks and he was a wasted draft pick?

And spare us the “Brady wanted a veteran backup” bologna. If Trask gave the Bucs a better chance as a backup in case Brady went down, he would’ve been the backup. Goob could still have been yacking to Brady’s ear all he wanted, like Griffin did.

I hope I am wrong about the Trashkfire,

Never said Brady wanted a veteran backup but ok… And nobody expected Trask to be ready day 1 period. We all knew and expected him to sit while they had the luxury of having Brady and a loaded team. It was about chasing rings. And BA went with sitting Trask and developing him, and had Gabbert as a back up(who BA ALWAYS highly praised). Now it’s time to see what he can do. Nobody expects anything under Bowels anyways and we’d probably be primed to draft and or sign a top QB in the draft or FA. WITH more cap space might I add. If it works out, great, if not, alot of us expected a decline after Brady retired to begin with with all the cap maneuvering. I’m in a wait and see. Wouldn’t be surprised if we’re trash, wouldn’t be surprised if we are decent. But that’s depending who we can keep this off-season. So I say we get a low cost veteran to battle Trask and whoever wins, wins. And go from there.

  58. JimbobBucsFan Says:

OK, Sasquatch, I too find it weird when general social commentary and political rhetoric are brought into football discussions here. I made sense out of all of the points Bucboy made, otherwise. Here is what I found when I googled “woke or wokeness”.

    What is meant by wokeness?

“Wokeness” gives people a shield to be mean and cruel, armored in false virtue.” -Elon Musk Merriam-Webster defines “woke” as “aware of and actively attentive to important facts and issues (especially issues of racial and social justice).” Musk ‘s quote about “wokeness” has also appeared in memes on Facebook:

What exactly does being woke mean?

To summarise: woke means a person is consciously awake. The term is of African American origin and refers to perceived awareness of issues concerning social and racial justice. Where does ‘woke’ come from?

  59. JimbobBucsFan Says:

My latest comments went straight into “awaiting moderation” of course. I knew it would based on past experience.

Go Bucs! I promise my next few will be strictly on footballl and the Bucs!

  60. David Says:

Trask will be even more mobile qb than his college days as he lost 10 to 15 lbs. Trask always prove his doubters wrong coming off the bench to lead as a star. He will do it again now with two years in NFL by sitting and learning.

  61. gp Says:

This thread sure took a weird turn.

  62. SB Says:
