Bucs Hire Running Backs Coach Skip Peete
February 21st, 2023NFL Network is reporting the Bucs have turned to Dallas to help fix their running game.
No, Tony Pollard is not coming to Tampa. But former Cowboys running backs coach Skip Peete is. Peete, 60, spent the last three seasons in Dallas.
That was his second stint with the Cowboys, previously serving there under two head coaches, Wade Phillips and Jason Garrett. Peete also coached in college and for the Raiders, Bears and Rams, the latter under Sean McVay. So Peete has a ton of experience.
Joe likes having another seasoned voice like Peete’s in the mix for new and first-time offensive coordinator Dave Canales.

Dallas put up 128 rushing yards and 1 TD against the Bucs in the playoffs with Vea and Hicks in the lineup. He’s doing something right.

One of the better hires the bucs have made in years!!!!

Peetes’ dad also worked for the Bucs under Sam Wyche, so some old ties to the organization on top of being a pretty known commodity as an RB coach. Good stuff. We also got a new OLB coach in George Edwards.

Question, are the letting Canales pick his staff? Or is this the Bowles show
.

Sounds like a good hire. There is nowhere to go but up in our running game.
February 21st, 2023 at 2:07 pm
Related to Rodney? Or Calvin?
It doesn’t suck.
February 21st, 2023 at 2:08 pm
@Redeemer
Could easily be both. Canales finds the candidates then presents candidate to Bowles, they vet the candidate, come to an agreement, and said candidate gets hired.

Rodneys’ brother

Never a bad thing bringing in more experience. It is a bit of a cobbled together staff, but maybe the different parts bring a bit of creativity to the offense.

Dooley, just asking. I’ve never known a running backs coach that could elevate a group like talent. IMO, if you want to run the ball, go get a fullback. I know this sexy zone blocking scheme is all the rage, but it’s hard to master. I like good ole smash mouth. Cowboys ran about 70/30 zbs. Just not a fan.

Seems like a good hire!

Good hire. This guy has a ton of experience working with teams and NFL RBs who were very successful…
Go Bucs!

What does Harold Godwin do?
February 21st, 2023 at 2:36 pm
Like this hire a lot. Has a ton of experience in a variety of offensive systems.
February 21st, 2023 at 2:54 pm
I hope he gets along with the O-line coach, it is going to take a lot to make the Bucs run game work, including an ability to play the RB with the hot legs.

I heard Rashad Penny is following Drew Lock to Tampa so not to waste a draft pick on a running back makes sense don’t what to overspend on a running back as Arians used to say.

@Allbuccedup
I was actually hoping we drafted Penny back in ’18, but we’ve still got Sneak Vaughn on the roster on his rookie deal and I’m holding out to see if Canales will even be willing to use him. As much as I like the idea of Penny, I’ve lowkey been rooting for Vaughn to get some more burn since we drafted him.
Harold Goodwin is still run game coordinator & works with Coach Gilbert with the OLmen. IDK if he’s still asst. HC

Get an Alstott or Rathman-type and pound the rock. I love the fullback position.
February 21st, 2023 at 3:39 pm
Oh, the hire? Yep, glad he’s got a lot of experience.

Lorenzo Neal…man I miss that guy.

I like This hire.

Bring back the I-formation, Bucs! That’d be SICK, bro.
February 21st, 2023 at 4:23 pm
Well, according to all the thumbs up around him, I feel good about coach Peete.
On a simular topic I was noticing on draft day that pretty much each and every top flight (BPA) pick for our positions of need are taken by the time we’re up to bat. In fact pretty much every BPA in All categories will be taken by nineteen twice over.
With that said, and what looks to be our new direction, there is One (BPA) Still on the board when we finally do make our pick.
To Be CLEAR… I’m NOT suggesting that it’s the right pick. I’m NOT saying that there aren’t more pressing needs! I’m ONLY saying that this actually maybe the BPA when it’s our turn at bat and it just so happens that he lines up Directly with what seems to be our probable new offensive direction.
I would rather pick a desperately needed defensive guy with the first pick IF the Highest quality were available. And without some serious Luck,, IT’S NOT going to be. Preferably an edge in my book. But at nineteen, it seems according to the draft boards out there, we’re might have to settle for a “work in progress”.
But Not With this pick!
As Joe Has Already Suggested………
IMMEDIATE IMPACT PLAYER + “BIJAN ROBINSON”

D-Rok … Remember Lorenzo Neal? He was a pretty decent fullback. Alstott wasn’t really the traditional FB IMO because he carried the ball a bunch; he was more the Thunder to Dunn’s Lightning. Chucky tried using Mike as more of a blocking FB from what I remember, but not sure that worked out so well.
BTW, I’m still wondering if we’ll use Kieft in the FB role (they did some last year but not much I don’t think). We’ve used TEs in that role before here in Tampa (remember Todd Yoder?).
February 21st, 2023 at 5:37 pm
DR,
I’ve had the nagging thought/feeling about midway through the season that Kieft should be a fullback/TE hybrid. Kinda like Ronde revolutionized the nickel CB position (props gettin’ to the Hall, Ronde! My man!), Kieft could be a great TE/FB combo player. It’s what he’s good at – mostly blocking with attitude, an occasional reception thrown in here or there to keep defenses honest.
At least, that’s how I’d use Ko.
February 21st, 2023 at 5:52 pm
Thad Lewis is your Bucs QB coach, fitting we’ve got a former protege of BA on this new offensive staff. With the hiring of Peete & Lewis, that’s 2 big resources for Canales on top of what he’s learned in over a decade on Seattles’ staff when it comes time for him to assemble offensive talent and start installing his playbook.
February 21st, 2023 at 6:04 pm
Not too excited about this if Harold Goodwin is still the “running game coordinator”. Assuming he was the brainchild behind our run schemes this season or lack of.
And D-Rok Ko was used and performed nicely as a FB in week 1 vs Dallas then not much after that by comparison. Coincidence that it was our best running attack all season, even with the o-line that was in their 1st game together as a unit? Not to me.
Ko can lead block, pass pro in the backfield and sneak out into the flat for some quick yards. Maybe Peete will see and use his versatility

They just don’t learn. They’ll win 4 games next season.
February 22nd, 2023 at 1:54 am
Thadeus. You are literally the only one on the page who does not think this is a good hire.
But more power to ya.
February 22nd, 2023 at 8:31 am
Did they interview 3 non-minority candidates before making the hire?
