Report: Bucs Have “Significant” Interest In Kellen Moore

January 30th, 2023

Ex-Cowboys OC Kellen Moore.

For those locked into the AFC Championship game last night, and it was a good one despite the refs demanding TV attention, you may have missed that the Cowboys let go of their offensive coordinator, Kellen Moore.

Almost immediately after the news broke, NFL insider Ian Rapoport of NFL Network Twittered that Moore is fully on the Bucs’ radar to replace fired and failed Byron Leftwich.

@RapSheet: The #Bucs are expected to have significant interest in Kellen Moore as an OC.

However, Moore is not yet signed, sealed and delivered. The Chargers already swooped in on the 34-year-old former NFL quarterback and have an interview lined up with Moore for the same gig, offensive coordinator.

If Moore chose Los Angeles, he would get to work with one of the better young quarterbacks in the league, Justin Herbert. Now contrast that with the Bucs, who don’t know who their quarterback is.

It’s possible that it’s Tom Brady or it’s possible it’s Kyle Trask or someone else. Who knows?

If you are Moore, would you rather work with Herbert, or in Tampa for a year before there’s a possible coaching change?

  1. Tye Says:

I would avoid Bowles like the plague!
Moore will pad his resume with the Chargers…

  2. Todd Says:

The Bucs aren’t going to get a good OC problem is who do we tell him our QB will be ?

  3. Buccos Says:

Offer him twice as much money as the Chargers. Three times as much if you have to

  4. LONG JOHN Says:

    HE LOOKS LIKE DR. WENK.

  5. Buccos Says:

Mike McCarthy just slit his own throat with this move. They have had the best offense in the NFL the last 3 years

  6. BrianBucs Says:

Let’s face it, at this present time, with the exception of money the Bucs OC position doesn’t exactly have a lot to offer.
Don’t know who the QB is going to be, an offensive line that couldn’t run block at all and pass blocking was average at best, no speed at all at any skilled position, and a conservative defensive minded head coach who cares more about time of possessions than he does scoring points and establishing a lead.
No big or familiar name or desirable candidate is going to come here when there are better OC positions available.
I know that Brady is taking his time and deciding things day by day but he needs to let the Bucs know something soon before the best candidates are all taken and get them out of the state of limbo

  7. Bradycomeback Says:

Looks like the cowboys are going after leftwich

  8. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Offer him Bowles job. Problem solved.

  9. mustachechuck Says:

Here in New England and in Boston we think
Tom Brady will be a Tampa Bay Bucs next year
He will win a Superbowl next year Tampa have
    FAITH………

  10. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Well, we know who will win the ring this year. No need to even watvh the Superbowl now.

  11. Rod Munch Says:

Why would anyone, who has any options, take what is a one-year job? Unless they promise him the head coaching role next year, I don’t know why he’d take the job.

With that said he certainly seems like the best available option.

  12. sasquatch Says:

What can we offer him to make it worthwhile to choose Tampa over San Diego?
    1. Guarantee to draft a QB of his choosing this year
    2. Promise him the HC job if Bowles is fired next year.

I doubt they’ll make either of those promises. I’ll be surprised if he comes here.

  13. Goatfarmer Says:

Dallas is one messed up organization. Wow. That guy got production out of Cooper Rush. He was great I thought. Dak must have thrown him under the bus for his meltdowns.

Hire him, Monken is my fave but here’s a close second.

  14. David Says:

    Buc Bonzai

Who are you implying? KC? Sure seems like the refs wanted to help them…
But no, they don’t stand a chance against the Philly pass rush while Mahomes is limping around on a high ankle sprain. It won’t be healed in two weeks.

I can’t stand eagles, but with a healthy Hurts they have far and away been the best team in the NFL

  15. Leopold Stotch Says:

Well I think Chargers coach is on the hot seat rn… So between the two organizations? I’d say it’s a horse a piece

  16. steele Says:

I don’t know about you guys, but I have less interest in this Eagles-Chiefs Super Bowl than possibly any other in recent memory. Both of today’s games felt rigged. Rigged to push the two chosen QBs, both of whom I despise. At the very least, both games were decided by injuries and outrageous penalties. Just sickening.

  17. Bucsfan13 Says:

Run to the Chargers! I rather work with Herbert than Trask. Someone tell Moore that Brady didn’t renew the lease on the house in Tampa, and now is living in Miami. He’s gone. It’s Trask or Gabbert. Run to Herbert

  18. Proudbucsfan Says:

Here we go again. No one interested in playing or coaching for the Bucs, next 10 years. Itsabucslife !!

  19. Noleriff Says:

Let’s see… 8 games at 26% California tax rate or 8 games with Zero state Tax in Tampa… 🤔

  20. MadMax Says:

Go to tampa and set myself up for a head coaching gig….because its coming…. Just saying

  21. Jeff’s grandpa Says:

Aint no guarantee that Staley makes it more then next year either

  22. Geno711 Says:

Why would anyone, who has any options, take what is a one-year job? Unless they promise him the head coaching role next year, I don’t know why he’d take the job.

@Rod honestly both the Chargers and Bucs coach are on the same hot seat.

  23. Defense Rules Says:

BrianBucs … ‘I know that Brady is taking his time and deciding things day by day but he needs to let the Bucs know something soon before the best candidates are all taken and get them out of the state of limbo’.

Bucs ‘relevance’ is joined at the hip with Brady unfortunately. Personally I’d much rather just on, take my lumps for 1 year, and hopefully built a TEAM for the future.

Folks are selling the Bucs’ short IMO. Glazers have already shown that they’re willing to pay top dollar to good coordinators for one thing. Florida zero state tax is another bennie. Our facilities are top-notch. Offensively our new OC will actually have a lot to work with. QB is admittedly the big open question, but even that’s not insurmountable.

Moore’s resume looks respectable, and we know that he was doing his own work (no BA’s Red Pen?). Dallas has done well scoring, but I particularly like his 3rd down conversion rates and Red Zone TD rates. Seems to understand the nuances of BOTH running attacks and passing attacks.

  24. Letsbucinggo Says:

Bowles is going to keep us for getting a good offensive coordinator because they are not stupid they know it could be a one and done job. Plus how much is Bowles going to interfere with the offense or stab you in the back.

  25. Cobraboy Says:

    :sigh:

This drama is worse than draft drama.

  26. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

Kellen Moore does look a lot like Dr Wenk!
He got a raw deal in Dallas, and was the scapegoat for the poor play at times of Dak Prescott.
He will probably pick San Diego over Tampa for 2 reasons. They have Justin Herbert and San Diego is a better place to live than Tampa.
But it does have higher taxes.

  27. Bucsfanman Says:

I’m cautiously optimistic about our future because if you think about it the missing piece is the offensive play-calling. Brady or not, this team will not be successful without a competent OC.

  28. Buccos Says:

No situation that a coordinator is coming into will be perfect. San Diego’s coach will be on the hotseat as well. And maybe he likes the Bucs WR’s better, Oline or defense. I don’t know why these so called fans think their own team is the worst place to work. And the taxes are a big deal. And living in Florida in general is much better than Cali. If you enjoy freedom and law and order

  29. Mort Says:

    LA can have him.

  30. The Anomaly Says:

he is going to a contender not a pretender

  31. Your Mom Says:

or Baltimore… with a coach who won’t leave you looking for a job in a year

  32. mark2001 Says:

This will likely be the Modus Operandi for any potential seasoned OC. If they are any good, why would they go where there is little succession to the current FA QB, and work for a HC with a record of failure as a HC, and risk getting tainted with that coaches decisions, and be possibly cut loose one year from now?

  33. Bucs56 Says:

Show the young Moore a California annual tax bill compared to Florida.

  34. The Anomaly Says:

    /thread

  35. RustyRhinos Says:

Sign Kellen up he can be a Player Coach he is only 34 and has experience at both. Win/Win

  36. mark2001 Says:

Rusty… maybe he is more into the Samuel Adams or Big Storm method of training rather than into the Brady method, and his playing days are over.

  37. ChiBuc Says:

Seems like a season long job interview to me. He is sure to outshine Todd before long, in a good spot for interim HC when Todd is ultimately fired… little pressure at that point whic could parlay into a permanent gig. However, If he fails with Herbert, it would cast a longer shadow than failing with Trask.
