Who will call defensive plays?
Todd Bowles may have been in charge of the whole team, but he also called defensive plays like he did as defensive coordinator.
Last year, Bowles mentioned he had someone in mind to take over as defensive coordinator but he was painted into a corner because he was hired too late in the coaching cycle to consider the hire.
Last week, Bowles wasted little time waving goodbye to many offensive assistants (and a couple on defense) in order to bring in his guys, assuming call coaches will be replaced.
Will one of those new assistants be a playcaller on defense? Bowles didn’t shed much light.
“We’ll always talk about it,” Bowles said last week. “I’ve never been all-encompassing – I have to make all the decisions, but we have guys capable of calling plays over there as well.
“We’ll talk about it as a staff and we’ll go through the dynamics of it and we’ll kind of go there. We’ll even let a few of them call some preseason games and see where we are. We’ll make the best decision going forward.”
It seems one or more coaches will get a test run in August on calling defensive plays.
When Bowles was in New York, his defensive coordinator was Kacy Rodgers. He called the defense in New York and Bowles also shared it with him, at times in an odd arrangement.
(OK haters, feel free to holler how Rodgers had mostly subpar defenses in New York.)

What is going to change now that Bowles gets another season? Absolutely nothing. Just like this past season he will be asked and expected to do something he just has no business being involved in. I feel he will even fail at tanking this next season. Also, how many back up and first time quarterbacks torched his defense? Looking forward to 52 more weeks of Bozos ineptitude. He should have gone down with the ship.

Please be mindful that all the top teams in the playoffs play with an aggressive offense. Up tempo, gadget plays, consistently go for it on 4th n short,
mismatches,etc. Contrary to Bowles philosophy of student body left n right, three n out then punt even on 4th n inches on the opponents 40 yd line. He’s a boring n conservative coach who’ll never stand a chance to compete with the modern day coach’s offense.

See this makes me feel like Bowles really isn’t qualified to be head coach. He had all the time from April to September to be grooming someone to call the plays as DC. You’re going to tell me no one on the staff could call defensive plays? And he couldn’t work with them to bring them up to speed?
If that person had failed, Bowles could still step in. They could have been told it was a one year gig until they got “his guy” in, but what assistant wouldn’t jump at the chance to get to be a DC for one year for the experience and quals?
So, this just makes me feel like he’s not really great at HC. And I question how honest he is being with himself that no one else could do it but him. Sounds like part of him prefers to be a DC.

For those oddly obsessed with the enthusiastic coach stance, name the most enthusiastic coach in the playoffs right now. Andy Reid is as stoic as bowles, perhaps more so. Kyle shanahan? You wouldn’t know if he was winning or losing by looking at him. McDermott? Stoic as well. Sirianni from the eagles is the most animated coach remaining. And with that team he has a lot to be enthusiastic about. Stoic coaches win as much as the others. Now if you want to talk about coaching acumen instead of how they look on the sidelines? Now there’s a conversation.

The problem with Bowles is his concentration level. He can’t take in every aspect of the game and call defensive plays. His brain doesn’t work that way. When he was a defensive coordinator exclusively he put his focus on the next anticipated play by the opposing offense. When he did this our defense hummed along while Arians called plays and later gave that responsibility to Byron. I think Bowles was over his head by trying to process live action coming at him. If he hires someone to call the defensive side of the ball maybe he can thrive as a head coach, doubt it, but atleast at this point in my life I could dream of it. As of right now I am watching some good teams play football in the post-season. Teams that deserve to be there, team much more consistent than we were this year. It was such a burden watching this team underachieve all year long. Bowles better learn from this, god knows he has been given enough opportunities. Starting with a new offense and defense. And oh by the way, let’s not forget that imitation special teams coach that stunk up Ramond James this year. A lot of corrections should be coming, hopefully, so we can all enjoy plopping down a few bucks for our season tickets.

He will start a year’s worth of search for an OC, only to find they do not want to coach under him.
The offense will become completely moribund as an 84 YO makes faulty adjustments and Brady goes down for the count. Gabbert gets two plays, lands on his shoulder and is out. Trask takes over and refuses to just hand the ball off.
2024; Bowles is volunteering at a food bank because football life is over, the Bucs get back into a decade long grind and the den of depression becomes the real name of RJS.

Joe – I look forward to whatever article you’re working on that explains the cap and contract situation. Reading on it myself, because of the use of void years in particular (which were necessary to get the Bucs this far), I just don’t see how they possibly bring Brady back, since you’re going to lost a bunch of free agents AND you’re going to also have to cut guys, just to get under the cap.
I know, and I’ve also said it for years, that you can always work around the cap. But that’s what the Bucs did to get here. If I understand void year hits properly, there’s no renegotiating them or moving them, it’s just dead, unmovable money. But, for whatever reason, there’s really not much written about void year deals, at least last time I looked, so that info is going off what has been available. I’d love to hear from actual cap experts that just explain how bad the Bucs cap situation really is, if the void year hits really are major stumbling blocks are not.

They’re just letting Bowles have his own guys since he didn’t get a chance to do that in 2022. It’s so when they fire him after 2023, he can’t say he didn’t have a chance. I really don’t think there is anything to it more than that. And, of course, you have to make sure you did everything by the book since all of the national sports media are a bunch of woke fruitcakes who will claim Bowles was fired because of his skin color.
Which, by the way, is ridiculous. If you heard Bowles dress down the sports media when they tried to play up him vs Tomlin, you’d know exactly how he feels about the trash woke media. But the Glazers are trying to dump MU for over $7-billion dollars, and they can’t have any controversy.

Also, there’s nothing in the rulebook that says you have to run it up the middle on 3rd and 1 when the other team has 10 players in the box. Terrible decision making is why Leftwich was fired.

Todd Bowles wasn’t the problem this year. Brady/Leftwich/Glazers were the problems. Brady was not mentally in it and leftwich didn’t make adjustments. I say the Glazers because they are absent. Bowles’ defense kept them in games, the same way the defense was the reason we had a shot at the rams last playoffs.

I take no offense to your comment, as you’re correct, most of the blowhards commenting are low-IQ low-T morons with no actual knowledge of football.
However, the only team in the playoffs last year I had any concerns about was the Rams, that’s it. The 49ers last year are not this years 49ers, and the Bucs would have beat them.
As for Bowles losing in NY because he didn’t have a QB… well, I got some bad news for you… he’s about to not have a QB. He DID have a QB this year and still lost, in a terrible division, yet he still managed to give Brady his first losing season… and his first loss to Atlanta… and his first loss to Dallas.
I’m not as down on Bowles as some others, I merely think he’s a below average coach, not the worst coach in the NFL. But he’s a loser and the team will lose under him. He’s not an average coach, he’s certainly not a good coach, he’s a loser coach. I do like him as a DC, but some people have a hard ceiling, and that is his. He’s not a leader, he’s not a stoic quiet guy like Dungy, he’s just a 3rd tier loser who kills time while you rebuild the roster, then when you got some talent, you fire him and get a real coach.

If the Bucs would have had a competent OC this past season and they average just 24 points a game they would have been 13-4.
If Todd Bowles could be paired with a more competent OC and we bring back a similar team as we had last year we could be a contender.
The big question is – who will be the next OC?
If Bill O comes to town then perhaps Tom Brady returns and the Bucs “reload” – as Head Coach Todd Bowles just claimed.
If an OC like Greg Roman is hired – then we will probably be in “rebuild” mode. Because I doubt Tom Brady would be interested in playing for that OC…
Either way – if Tom Brady does not return we are without a doubt in “REBUILD” mode.

Glazers are in it for the money only they do not know anything about football. It was just a toy Malcolm gave them to play with. Half of the front office is Glazers. They rely on Licht to keep them informed of whats going on but the problem is no one is telling Lichts whats going on. Someone mentioned the Chiefs, Bills, 49ers wide open offenses but something else these teams and most the other playoff teams have is young mobile quarterbacks. The Bucs are still under the spell of old style football and with Bowles it will continue. Unless there is some miracle around the corner I expect a drop in ticket sales next year.

Todd Bowles can be chastised as a HC for a number of things, but I sure do wish folks would research the stats BEFORE chastising him for virtually everything. 4th down attempts & conversions is one of those.
Bucs went for it on 4th down 27 times this season … tied for 8th most in the NFL with the Jags. We made it on 15 of those attempts … 55.6% of the time … which ranks us 7th in the NFL. Considering that our offense ranked 25th overall, I don’t consider those 4th down conversion numbers all that bad. Another way of saying that they were actually quite good, for an 8-9 team especially.

Lots of head scratching decisions in that regard from multiple games, including Cleveland, Cinci, and Dallas just off the top of my head. He coaches scared most of the time, and then finally decides to be aggressive at some of the most ridiculous times.

I agree with your bottom line (‘let’s give him time’) but it has nothing to do with NY. Bowles is the best DC we’ve had since Monte Kiffin, and right now we NEED to be focusing on our defense just as much as our offense. We’ve got a few pieces to work with, but we’re potentially losing a bunch of players (FAs) & we’ll need to rebuild this defense. I’ll gladly give Bowles a year to see if he can replicate what he did for our defense in 2019-2020 (major changes & we jumped from #31 defense in 2018 to the #8 defense in 2020 … and won the SB largely thanks to that defense).
I’ve long been against dual-hatting any coordinator as the HC, mostly because it usually ends up in a conflict of responsibilities that that the majority of HCs can’t reconcile. If Bowles insists on remaining the DC, he won’t be with us in 2024 IMO. The same holds true though for him hiring an OC. Without a strong OC, he won’t make it to 2024.
I laugh though every time I read folks spout off about Bowles lacking ‘energy’ or not being ‘enthusiastic enough’. I care about PERFORMANCE; if you WIN I’ll be the 1st one to applaud you even if you pee all over yourself on national television while accepting the Lombardi trophy. Words without performance don’t mean diddly.

What will change with Bowles? Absolutely nothing! He is too stubborn to leave the 80’s and 90’s. How many changes did you see from beginning to end of this season? Nada. He was the main man. He could make whatever changes he wanted and he made none. Hardly ever even adjusted on defense. His baby. D still doesn’t know who is responsible for who in zone coverage for Gods sake. Defensive backs yelling or pointing fingers after a ton of completions. Can’t blame awful Leftnut for that! I am beginning to believe more and more that Leftnut was simply following orders from Bowles. They both watched a once proud team disintegrating in front of their eyes and did NOTHING! A disgraceful exhibition of coaching, all year, and you seriously wonder what will Bowles change? He won’t change. Maybe put more weight on one foot than the other in his Macy Mannequin pose? Maybe grimace more as his team implodes? Come on Joe! You know he won’t change.

There are some very good OC out of work. I don’t know why it take Licht and or Bowles so long to set up an interview. You have Roman, Monken, O”Brien and some younger coaches available. Maybe they are just waiting for leftovers because know after next year the whole staff will be fired.

Defenses no longer win Championships
Young, Creative offensive minded coaches- with a great QB, win championships.
Bowles has proven to be s good DC.
But he struggled badly as a HC, the jets record got worse each year he coached.
It was crazy to hire him- now we are stuck with him for another year.
And when he is fired next year, we will have lost a great DC.
Just a terrible plan, that will set the team back futher every season.

Cricket, I agree with you. I can name off the top of my head 10 to 15 owners I wouldn’t want anywhere near my franchise. The owners don’t have to be experts at football. But it is their responsibility to hire those who are. We have done a decent job with that. Jason l isn’t perfect, far from it, but in my opinion he’s one of the better GMs in the league. Top half at least. And we have a great cap guy as well. And the owners don’t meddle. Which in most cases is a very good thing. Next year will be an interesting one.

there’s nothing in the rulebook that says you have to run it up the middle on 3rd and 1 when the other team has 10 players in the box. Terrible decision making is why Leftwich was fired.

They need a brand new offense. BL is gone in part, because of the limitations of said offense. He never tweaked things. Never put his own stamp on an archaic offense. To win with BAs system, you need tremendous talent and near perfect execution. It’s all about winning matchups. Without those things, it’s fairly easy to defend, especially without a run game. Go hire a 9ers assistant, someone with the Rams. You can’t tell me Godwin, Evans and Gage wouldn’t benefit immensely. Bowles shouldn’t be calling defense next season either. Crafting a gameplan without the burned of individual play calling is something most defensive minded HCs do. Look at Belichick. Everyone know what he wants and he delegates.

Bowles has 5 full seasons as a HC.
What will change? Nothing. Why would it? He won the division and wasn’t fired for how terrible the team was.

The head coach is responsible for fixing the offense in the same way the head coach is responsible for fixing the defense. Todd Bowels “scaredy cat” philosophy obviously changed our “no risk it no biscuit” offense which effectively neutered Byron Leftwich because that’s what our offense was built for. In other words, Todd Bowels could have “fixed” our offense by “not” changing anything about it at all ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

OK I’ll play. You seem to be on this ‘scaredy cat’ kick today. Reminds me of certain politicians who believe that if you say something loud enough & often enough the sheep will believe it whether it’s true or not. So instead of playing that game, how about giving some SPECIFICS JACK?
For instance, you contend that Bowles changed the ‘no risk it, no biscuit’ philosophy. Why don’t you start off by explaining to all of us just what BA’s ‘no risk it, no biscuit’ philosophy was. It’s a phrase that many JBFers seem to throw around without having a clue what it REALLY means and how BA game-planned.
And after you’ve done that, please enlighten me on HOW Bowles changed it. CHANGED IT TO WHAT exactly? Did he pass less? (Not true). Did he run more? (Not true). Did he make Brady throw deep less? (Not really, but Brady did throw fewer deep ball (20 yards or more) in 2022 than he idd in 2021. But interestingly, that just continued a trend started in 2021, since he threw fewer deep balls in 2021 than he did in 2020). Seems to have something to do with little things like pass protection, receivers running the proper routes, what the defense allows, you know, stuff like that.
BTW, there’s an excellent article on the web (Joe doesn’t allow links) but Google ‘Brady and the Deep Ball … What Gives?’ written 16 Dec 2022 that sheds some light on what was really happening in terms of the deep ball & the no risk it, no biscuit philosophy. Lots of ‘stuff’ was happening that had nothing to do with Todd Bowles being a ‘scaredy cat’.

Bingo. Watching Buffalo this afternoon, the Bengals DLine was having their way with the Bills OLine in the 1st qtr for whatever reason. Result was 8 yards offense for the Bills that qtr (they finally got untracked in the 2nd qtr). Bucs suffered the same fate, but suffered it for an entire season. Simply put, we didn’t have the horses to make that philosophy work, and BL didn’t adjust (if in fact he could have).

I agree with Redeemer and Defense Rules. So I saw an article somewhere, that BA ran a vertical offense with zone blocking scheme in Arizona so I believe the Bucs run an Air Coryell system.
For football nerds:
In American football, Air Coryell is the offensive scheme and philosophy developed by former San Diego Chargers coach Don Coryell. The offensive philosophy has been also called the “Coryell offense” or the “vertical offense”. The Coryell offense is a combination of deep and mid range passing and power running. The offense relies on getting all five receivers out into patterns that combined stretched the field, setting up defensive backs with route technique, and the quarterback throwing to a spot on time where the receiver can catch and turn upfield. Pass protection is critical to success because at least two of the five receivers will run a deep in, skinny post, comeback, speed out, or shallow cross.
Overall, the goal of the Coryell offense is to have at least two downfield, fast wide receivers who adjust to the deep pass very well, combined with a sturdy pocket quarterback with a strong arm. The Coryell offense uses three key weapons. The first is a strong inside running game, the second is its ability to strike deep with two or more receivers on any play, and the third is to not only use those two attacks in cooperation with each other, but to include a great deal of mid-range passing to a TE, WR, or back.
The strong inside running game requirement is probably why Byron was calling hb dives all the time.

Now Brady’s bread and butter scheme he was in since he entered the league is the Erhardt Perkins system.
The traditional aspect of this scheme is to utilize a power-running offense to set up the play-action pass downfield. Obviously, the Patriots do this to a T. They are not afraid to throw in obvious running situations, which creates a tremendous amount of mismatches in coverage down the field.
Wide receivers line up wide, outside receivers line up next to the shoulder of the tackle, tight ends are utilized in the backfield and all hell breaks loose as it relates to the defenses attempting a pre-snap scheme.
You will see two-tight end sets, four wide receivers lined up outside, bunch formations and even jumbo packages. It’s a combination of all sorts of formations, first utilized by Ron Erhardt and Ray Perkins decades ago.
The backbone of the Erhardt-Perkins system is that plays — pass plays in particular — are not organized by a route tree or by calling a single receiver’s route, but by what coaches refer to as “concepts.” Each play has a name, and that name conjures up an image for both the quarterback and the other players on offense. And, most importantly, the concept can be called from almost any formation or set.
It’s all about putting the receivers in the best situation to succeed, no matter the formation prior to the snap. Unlike the West Coast system, this enables different formations to utilize the exact same play. It also relies less on the route tree, which is normally the backbone of playbooks in the NFL.

The Bills should have lost to Miami’s 3rd string rookie QB last week. They’re just not that good. Not sure why, or what happened, but they were insane, easily the best team in football — then they lost to the Jets and just feel apart. Actually, before that, Allen, out of the blue, started to turn the ball over in the redzone, when he hadn’t been doing that, then they seem to have gotten more conservative in their playcalling, and it’s been some sort of domino effect where things went out of control.
But I’m glad they’re getting knocked out of the playoffs. They’re weak, they quit a game because it was too stressful to continue. That’s just pure pansy gen z / millenial limp wristed behavior. Instead of going out and winning one for the gipper, they cried and whined and needed counselling. Worst part, those cupcakes quitting is going to be a plague on all of football going forward. For no on, every time someone gets hurt, it’s going to be more and more common to just end the game. Bookmark this comment and revisit it in 5-years and tell me that isn’t the truth.

Jack Clark – Add also that in the KC game, in the 4th quarter, down by 3 scores, Bowles punts the ball from midfield on a 4th and 2. Obviously the Cleveland game as well, that idiot literally cost the team that game.
That’s not to mention all the other times, down late in games, where he punted on the Bucs side of the 50 instead of giving his GOAT QB a chance to win the game.
Bowles is a flat out coward of a coach, to that, I completely agree. He acts like he has the all-time great NFL Bucs 2002 defense out there, instead of a mid-tier defense that rarely made stops when they needed to.
At the same time, it’s worth giving Bowles some leniency as he clearly had zero faith in that idiot Leftwich to make a good call.

Oh jack i didnt read your earlier posts but BA and bowles shouldnt be in the same sentence. BA is a Hall of famer. Btw did u know brady is undefeated against bowles when he was at the jets. I saw this coming last year. Bowles jets was an easy 2 wins every year and pats fans had 0 respect for bowles. We always looked forward to playing the jets when bowles was HC. I was like what??? bowles is being HC when they announced it last year. This isnt going to end well was my thought.

Zac Taylor was the QB coach of the Rams and the bengals run a zone run scheme run by sean mcvay which was developed by mike shanahan and gary kubiak during the broncos era. So bengals, 49ers, rams have the same running scheme. this scheme almost made todd gurley mvp of the league in 17-18.

I think the cowboys could get blown out tbh. Dak is turnover prone, the weakness of the Cowboys D is the rush defense, and Dak struggles against the 49ers defense for some reason; 49ers D is absolutely stacked though from top to bottom.

Bradyfan … Excellent post on the Air Coryell offensive scheme. The Bucs have actually been running that since Lovie returned here as HC in 2014.
So many seem to think that BA hated running the ball and just threw & threw & threw. False; in Indy & his first 3 years in Arizona his teams ran the ball 40%-43% of the time, and those 4 seasons were all winning years. In his last 2 years in Arizona his teams ran the ball somewhat less (36%-38% of the time) and both years were break-even at best.
BA loved to throw the deep ball too, but set it up well. Where his teams excelled IMO was in the intermediate routes (10-20 yards). QBs seem to average close to 40% on the deep balls, but MUCH better on the intermediate routes (as long as the pass protection holds up). And that’s what we were missing this past season: we stunk it up when it came to the intermediate routes. Reason? Partially on the receivers (we missed Chris Godwin initially because of his injury, but Gronk & AB even more), but much more so on the OLine not being able to pass protect long enough for Brady.

After reading more about the offensive problems, I’ve come to be less negative on Bowles. Bowles was in favor of more innovation and better schemes on offense. The run and passing game. The offensive coaches didn’t listen to him, which is why most of them were fired.
They were Arians yes men who were blindly attached to a playbook and schemes that were archaic and years old. They didn’t want to adjust that they no longer had the perfect execution that came with an all pro line and Gronk/AB who were vital to Evans/Godwin working. NFL defenses had the old Arians offense figured out and the pieces were no longer there to make it work.
