Dan Orlovsky Applauds The Firing Of Byron Lefwich
January 20th, 2023No one, and Joe means no one, has harped on how poorly the Bucs offense has been coached the past couple of years than former Bucs backup quarterback Dan Orlovsky.
The BSPN talking head just cannot believe how backward the has been, especially this year when failed former Bucs offensive coordinator was exposed without former Super Bowl-winning coach Bucco Bruce Arians looking over his shoulders.
Joe won’t detail now why Leftwich was so horrible. (For the few who defend Leftwich — yes, they walk among us — Joe would like for these folks to tip him off why only one team the past three years seriously considered hiring Leftwich. Also, Joe would like to be tipped off about the number of teams lined up to interview Leftwich currently. Joe hasn’t heard of one.) But Orlovsky sort of did.
Yesterday on Last Take, seen on BSPN, Orlovsky said the removal of Leftwich was long overdue. And the trainwreck that was the playoff loss to the Cowboys left head Todd Bowles with no choice. The Bucs had to move on.
“Totally needed for this organization,” Orlovsky said. “I don’t know how you can watch what happened in Tampa this season and then rewatch that game that happened on Monday night and not think, ‘Man, we have to start all the way over in Tampa.’
“This was neccesary. I’ve been saying this for three years. This is one of the least creative offenses in the NFL. … They do very little to help their players. … They were super talented and that’s why they got it done [in 2020].
“This offense is so behind in so many different ways when it comes to New Age football. In many ways, it’s archaic. It’s very little motion. They don’t do anything they are good at. I feel like they major at things they are bad at.”
Orlovsky sort of echoed what Joe heard NFL Films X’s and O’s guru Greg Cosell say last week. He said he never saw the Bucs run creative routes for wide receivers to get guys open. The routes were vanilla and depended on the receiver to win against a defender strictly with his physical skills.
You can see and hear Orlovsky’s reaction to Leftwich’s dismissal in the video below.

Well said. But this archaic football is BowlesBall, what Todd wants, not just a matter of who the OC is. As long as Bowles is HC, I doubt you will see this team and this offense change.
Nobody has a clear picture of how much influence Brady had in the play calling, if any. Can you believe that the GOAT didn’t know how bad it was, or that he would simply follow orders?

You can’t keep doing the same wrong thing over and over. Really hope we
get an innovative coordinator that can strike fear in opposing defenses. The
struggle to get first downs and move the chains when not in hurry up offense
should be a major focus. The repeated three and outs especially in the first half
was almost as frustrating as watching Jameis giving the opposing teams big leads in the first quarter to me.
January 20th, 2023 at 5:36 am
This was one of the most frustrating seasons I can remember. Been watching the BUCS since 1984. At least that’s my earliest memory of a game. I was 4. I do remember how horrible we were and how spoiled new fans are. We were a joke worse rep than any team ever. Our priest would crack jokes at Sunday mass on when I was in a Kid. Commercials made me fun, national late t.v., local t.v., waiters, teachers, everywhere. I don’t remember feeling like we’re going to win until Dungy late in his first season. It’s good to have high expectations, it’s great we are expected to win. We are nowhere close to how it is to be. Go Bucs
January 20th, 2023 at 5:40 am
Little keyboard and big hands = stupid misspelling and added words. Commercials made fun of us and it’s when I was a kid not in a kid, I have never bleached my skin and held a baby out of a window like Michael Jackson he’s been in many kids. He’s burning in boiled bleach in hell if there is a hell.

Someone should fire the owners for the coaching debacle.
Bowles has got to go.
January 20th, 2023 at 5:50 am
HaHA, Drunk, you’re killin me LOL….that will be post of the day! It will not be topped lol.
January 20th, 2023 at 5:59 am
Should have just fired everyone and hire Sean Payton.
January 20th, 2023 at 6:13 am
We’ll have to trade our 1st for Payton….aints still own him.
January 20th, 2023 at 6:20 am
Andy Reid plays chess, BL plays checkers
January 20th, 2023 at 6:25 am
dan orlovsky eats too much rice pilaf

I for one had hoped that the Bucs were keeping the offense so vanilla this season to allow the o-line to gel. The rushing yards per attempt against Dallas would seem to indicate how important Ryan is to the line. Admittedly a small sample size but it’s all we have. That stated, the games against Pittsburgh and Carolina laid waste to any hopes that there was a plan and i fully agree that BL had to go. I’m a fan of the Bucs since Doug and a fan of this site since nearly the beginning. As a fan, I’m thrilled that we will soon see the end of this current round of OC bashing. While warranted, it’s damned depressing. There’s some juice left in the current crop of skill players. Here’s hoping they make a good decision on a competent play caller.

So are you saying that BA’s name is coming down from the ROH ?
and James Wilder going up in his place?
The whole coaching including BA needs to go.
Watch the Playoffs and match up talent and coaches and see just what we have that reminds you of our blind squirrel crew
January 20th, 2023 at 7:08 am
dan orlovsky is awful to listen to
January 20th, 2023 at 7:13 am
Imagine what Cowboys at wildcard round must’ve thought going through films worth 18 weeks showing the same boring patterns in Bucs offense. It must’ve been a nauseating experience to say the least.
Go Bucs!
January 20th, 2023 at 7:26 am
19th pick in draft is small price to pay for Sean Payton. Hell, Glazers gave up way more for Gruden.
It’s a no brainer
January 20th, 2023 at 7:37 am
How do the Glazers trust this dolt Todd Blowes to hire anybody? Where is Jason Licht? You know he’s going to hire one of his like minded loser freinds.
January 20th, 2023 at 7:49 am
Is there anything like the Baker Act within the NFL for it’s own owners?
Kinda like what is happening with the Redskin’s owner, Heel lift Danny Snyder ?
Or are the Glazers just entertainment and built in non threatening team.
They must chuckle when they walk out of the room.
January 20th, 2023 at 8:07 am
Ha. This is the same Dan who stated Brady will go to Carolina.
January 20th, 2023 at 8:08 am
Dan is SPOT ON here
January 20th, 2023 at 8:32 am
He wanted out this season and the Glazers, Licht and BA held him hostage. He extended his contract to help the team and was slapped in the face for it. What many of you don’t realize Brady doesn’t play for thr money, he has never been close to the highest paid QB in the league, so luring him back with incentives isn’t going to work. He knows he can’t win under 4 time LOSER Blows so he’ll move on. Bucs have as much chance of getting Brady back as they do signing Payton.
January 20th, 2023 at 9:05 am
How do you applaud someone getting fired, what about his wife and children. I wish the man the best, no one said anything when the Buc’s won the superbowl. This web site make it looks as if a black person can not do anything without a white guy. look at all the changes that have occured on the offense side of the ball.
January 20th, 2023 at 9:27 am
I totally agree with him, no creativity. It’s the same plays week after week.
January 20th, 2023 at 9:28 am
Preach on, Dan!
Yessir. But — with Blowes doing the hiring, it’s also possible he hires someone even more dumb and bland than B’moron.
January 20th, 2023 at 9:31 am
What I don’t understand is Bowles was just as bad in his defense, the tight end in the cowboys game was not well covered almost the entire game. People think we had a good defense because we held most crappy teams to under 23.
January 20th, 2023 at 9:32 am
we made bad qb look like rock stars!
January 20th, 2023 at 10:56 am
With you on Toad’s Bowels, JD.
January 20th, 2023 at 10:57 am
Dan hit the nail on the head!! Some making this about a lack of diversity, he calls BS and points to production – lack there of! Yes our OLINE was in shambles, but good coaches overcome obstacles don’t creatively scheme our player’s strengths…he did NONE of that! We were predictable and vanilla. Jury is still out on Bowles…
January 20th, 2023 at 11:13 am
I agree 100% with Orlovsky!!! I’m sure most Buc Fans do too!! We’ve seen it it week after week after week, with very little change!!!! For those fans that thought maybe BL was saving the good plays for playoffs, you were sadly mistaken!!!!!!!
January 20th, 2023 at 11:17 am
Almost forgot…FIRE BOWLES TOO!!!!! He is not the answer for a HC!!!
January 20th, 2023 at 11:39 am
It’s been this way since day one of Arians showing up. What Arians was running was the equivalent of the old Tampa 2. Sure, it works when the field is covered with HOFers, but when the talent level goes down, so too does the production.
Considering the talent that was on this team since Brady showed up, it underperformed greatly. Brady throwing for 5k+ and 43 TD’s was underperforming given the amount of talent that was at the skill positions and Brady at QB.
Our offense was laboring to pick up first downs while the teams we were playing against were playing pitch and catch and moving the chains. It was so frustrating to watch, especially when you had Evans, Godwin, Brown, and Gronk all on the field at the same time. No rub routes, no motion, no nothing. Just my guy against your guy, which is fine when your guy is one of the best in the league, but what happens when that guy gets injured or quits in the middle of a game?
Leftwich was getting his play designs from the old Tecmo Bowl play sheet, only we didn’t have Bo Jackson in the backfield with the ability to run the Tecmo Weave.
January 20th, 2023 at 12:35 pm
The owners should of fired themselves and step away from hiring any personnel. The owners realize themselves they have made horrible hiring Decisions that have now set this franchise back until 2026. Instead of standing up and publicly stating that their hiring of leadership has caused irreparable damage to the franchise, they fire Leftwich. Hiring of Bowles was a set up , with far more qualified and deserving candidates. Change must be made by the two brothers. They must step forward and then step down doing what is right, not what’s easy. Then you will see deserving decisions made to give the team a realistic chance to win their weak division in 2023.
January 20th, 2023 at 12:52 pm
Leftwich no doubt had to go. It amazes me when I watch other teams and their wide receivers are uncovered 20 yards down the field. I don’t believe those teams have better receivers than the Bucs. It’s scheming and game planning and Leftwich sucked at both. I hope we find an offensive coordinator who can create opportunities for the Bucs’ receivers to get open. I would also like to see the Bucs draft a franchise quarterback….but that is for another post.
January 20th, 2023 at 2:23 pm
So on a local well known podcast that I’m evidently not allowed to mention, the caster thinks now Todd Bowles is a lame duck coach, they’ll have trouble getting any good OC to come in this year and it’s unlikely TB12 will want to come back to this mess. Agree with him in a way because Bowles is still here. Had the fires him too, maybe easier to get better coaches in. May be the start of a fire sale. We’ll see. I certainly think firing BL
was necessary.
January 20th, 2023 at 3:29 pm
Dan who he’s clueless knows nothing about football
January 20th, 2023 at 7:51 pm
* humans being with an IQ over 45 applaud the firing of byron leftwich *
January 20th, 2023 at 10:44 pm
Been saying the same thing as him since BA / Leftwich got here.
It worked we had 9 HOFer / all-pro / pro bowlers in offense….
Once that number went down to only 6, it didn’t work.
And Leftwich made ZERO adjustments.
