Todd Bowles Appears Safe
January 19th, 2023There are two reasons why Joe is typing this story.
The first is damn near everywhere Joe goes he’s asked when Team Glazer is going to fire Bucs head coach Todd Bowles.
The other seems to be a bloodlust among Bucs fans begging for Bowles to be fired.
Joe thought the concept of unloading a coach after just one season in which a team won a division was just ridiculous, especially before the man has had a chance to hire his own staff. Throw in the fact Team Glazer has never removed a coach after one season, this wasn’t a much of a story.
(For those who believe Bowles hiring his own staff should not be factored in, that is naiveté at its highest. No legitimate coach would accept a job if he wasn’t allowed to select his staff. And if Team Glazer didn’t trust Bowles enough to hire his own assistants, then he shouldn’t have been promoted in the first place.)
Then came Monday night. The loss was so bad, the Bucs were so unprepared, the offense (yet again) was so clueless and zero adjustments were made, that doubt crept into Joe’s noggin that maybe Team Glazer would break from its history.
Chris Branch of The Athletic thought the playoff loss to the Cowboys was so awful for the Bucs that a reasonable person had to wonder if Bowles didn’t just lose a game, but maybe his job.
There is a special, depressing moment teams reach in the NFL: the playoff loss so bad, your entire organization must reconsider its trajectory. That’s how badly the Cowboys beat the Buccaneers last night.
Do the Bucs keep Todd Bowles? It was a bad year for a team that was supposed to be a contender. They can say they made the playoffs, yes, but they finished 8-10 and skated into the postseason thanks to a historically awful NFC South. Hard to thump your chest about that. Expect at least a staff shakeup.
Based on recent Team Glazer history, it appears if Bowles were in danger he likely wouldn’t still be coach. Let’s look at the post-creamsicle era of the Bucs:
* Father Dungy: Dungy was fired two days after his second one-and-done playoff loss to the Eagles in as many years.
* Chucky: Chucky had 20 days. He was let go on a late-Friday afternoon in mid-January. Joe heard Chucky had his end-of-the-season meeting with Team Glazer and the meeting got testy. Joe heard he snapped at Team Glazer, saying they shouldn’t meddle in his football business when they brought up the subject of drafting a quarterback in the first round, which Chucky was very much against. Chucky later was dining at an Italian eatery on Anderson Road in Tampa when he got a phone call informing him he was fired.
* Raheem Morris: He was let go the day after the 2011 season ended.
* Greg Schiano: Fired the day after the 2013 season ended. Joe had heard through the grapevine that Team Glazer had begun negotiations with lousy Lovie Smith as early as October.
* Lovie Smith: He got three days after the 2015 season.
* Dirk Koetter: Hours after a loss to end the 2018 season, Koetter was informed he would not be retained.
So there is the history of Team Glazer removing head coaches without letting the victim linger. As you can tell with the timeline with Chucky, it doesn’t appear Team Glazer planned to can Chucky until after the postseason meeting with him went sideways.
Joe believes Bowles is safe.
(To add context to the Chucky speculation, former Bucs rock star general manager Mark Dominik once said on SiriusXM NFL Radio that he was in the hospital when Team Glazer called him, offered him the job of general manager and told him he had until the next day to decide. The next day, the Bucs announced Morris and Dominik were the new leaders of the organization.)
As for all the folks who comment on this here site asking why there is a “delay” in removing failed offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, Joe can only respond, “What delay?”
It appears fans are on a different timeline than Bowles. The head coach said Monday he first wants to meet with his staff later this week. It’s just now Thursday morning.
January 19th, 2023 at 4:22 am
Appreciate you putting all that in perspective Joe. I think Bowles is safe for another year also, but both Leftwich AND Armstrong will be departing.
January 19th, 2023 at 4:31 am
Yes, we know Bowles is on a different time line. It’s a slow one, like how long it takes him to adjust, if ever to game plans that aren’t working. Truth is Leftwich should’ve been fired before mid season. He ain’t the only one tho. Isn’t Harold Goodwin the run game coordinator? Whoever it is needs to go too, we had the worst run game in the league. Don’t get me started on our special teams coach.I want my pound of flesh, some heads need to start rolling here.
January 19th, 2023 at 5:21 am
By keeping Bowles, the organization is pissing off 80% of its fans. Why is it than fans can see that he sucks as a head coach, but they can not? I don’t want to hear the BS about the staff. How did he do with his staff in NY? The staff he had this year is better than the one he can put together. As I have said, who wants to join him for one year?
January 19th, 2023 at 5:41 am
Its inevitable, he will be fired this or next year. He’s had five losing seasons. They will be worse next season. Tank for Williams. Start fresh in 2024. It’s time we get our franchise qb. We had two in Young ans Williams, and let them go. That’s it since 76. NFL is about the gm, hc, and qb. We lack at least 2/3. Possibly all 3.
I’ve said several times on this site, our last few drafts have sucked. Very little are making contributions. No real pro bowler. That’s where we are.
January 19th, 2023 at 5:48 am
If everyone agrees he only gets one more year (due to this year’s poor performance and his track record) what OC is going to be attracted to the job?
January 19th, 2023 at 5:49 am
Bowles is safe?????
Good guy…..great defensive coordinator…..but not so great head coach.
January 19th, 2023 at 5:58 am
Big Z, I wonder if the drafted players not contributing has something to do with coaching? Kinda a chicken or the egg scenario maybe. Just throwing it out there.
January 19th, 2023 at 5:58 am
Can someone please tell me what Bowles did that was even above average? A losing record with this talent? What eventually needs to be done should be done now, Bowles is a terrible head coach.
January 19th, 2023 at 6:05 am
Bowles didn’t win anything… He simply had the best losing record. Hardly an accomplishment. It’s almost as celebratory as winning by disqualification.
January 19th, 2023 at 6:07 am
Then it’s settled. Heaven forbid the Glazers should break with their tradition.
January 19th, 2023 at 6:08 am
This headline spoiled my morning coffee.
January 19th, 2023 at 6:14 am
i did notice coach went to the podium yesterday to talk with absolutely no bucs gear on…
never saw that before, except when he was in a suit for the hiring presser…
always had on a cap and or a bucs shirt or sweatshirt…
he stood at the podium without any bucs garb
January 19th, 2023 at 6:24 am
Bucs fans deserve better from the owners.
January 19th, 2023 at 6:40 am
If Blowes comes back, the fans won’t.
January 19th, 2023 at 6:43 am
I’m so sick of hearing but but he didn’t get to pick his own staff!!!! Save it for someone who’s gullible enough to think that would change Bowles ability to be a successful HC.
Joe, your reader’s aren’t that gullible.
January 19th, 2023 at 6:45 am
Terrible coach in New York.
Terrible coach so far in Tampa.
What suggests he will ever be anything but a terrible coach?
January 19th, 2023 at 6:53 am
Just delaying the I inevitable- kicking the can – stalling if you will
Dude will be toast by game 8 next year when we are 2-6
Bowles is a bum
Time to cancel the season tickets!!
January 19th, 2023 at 6:58 am
Some second try coaches learn from prior mistakes
Bowles is doing the exact same thing here he did in NY- take a talented team and run it into the ground – in 1 season
History repeats itself – the writing is on the wall
We will have a top 5 pick if Bowles stays
Maybe that is the goal – time to suck to pay back for the Brady years ….
It definitely appears that way
January 19th, 2023 at 7:00 am
Keeping Bowles extends the inevitable and guarantees that a quality OC candidate would not be interested to tie their future to a head coach who is practically a lame duck unless there’s a big turnaround with an old roster and an unproven QB.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:01 am
In all fairness Bowles should be safe. He had Leftwich forced upon him, and it was the offense that was the main failure. Bowles deserves 2 more years to prove himself with HIS coaching staff.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:09 am
Bowles didn’t get to hire his own staff? Boo freakin hoo. He inherited a Super Bowl winning staff!! All he had to do was NOT SCREW IT UP!
I blame him for the offense’s issues. Didn’t Joe write about how Bowles had the receivers’ routes changed to make them more effective with run blocking? Did the running game get better? No. Did the passing game suffer greatly? Yes.
I rest my case. Contact the Glazers. 😂
January 19th, 2023 at 7:30 am
Keeping Bowles = a decision to tank in 2023.
You can’t win with him, so the only course of action is to gut the roster of guys over 30 by trades/cuts, clear the cap situation and stockpile picks. That makes the Bucs job very enticing next hiring cycle.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:32 am
Wrong, Willie. The “Super Bowl winning staff” was headed by Arians. He was not there this season. In fact Arians “resigned” at the end of March 2022 – no time to hire new coaches. Bowles got what Arians left him.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:34 am
Depressing. “Bowles us safe.”
2023 will suck bigly.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:39 am
We’ll see what Bowles is like next year playing for his job because he won’t get another year.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:40 am
2023 The Return of the Yucs.Praise the Beer and Pass the Head Bags.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:41 am
Look, if Cooper Kupp decides to put his head down and go for the first down instead of sliding, we’re probably 7-10 and watching the wildcard round from home. This team didn’t go out and win the division, the division fell into its lap. So I give the coaching staff zero credit for that title.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:41 am
If Boyles is back next year and Brady isn’t, I won’t be purchasing Sunday ticket. I’m not paying to watch a poorly coached team of underachievers. Local broadcasts of Dixie Chicks will be a better option.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:46 am
He neglected a failing offense for the entire season. He is the head coach, he’s responsible for every facet of the team. It’s also his responsibility to ensure the team is being run the way he wants it to.
The rhetoric that there was no one better to replace Leftwitch with is complete BS (I.e. Clyde Chtistensen), you literally could have replaced him with any offense staff member and it would’ve been an upgrade. He should be fired for dereliction of duty, this team was run just as Todd Bowles wanted it to be run. If not then should be fired for the inability to make the decisions required from a head coach. Hell how many times did he trot Succup out knowing he didn’t have the leg to hit 50+ yard fgs…. THIS WAS/IS A BOWLES RUN TEAM, IT DOESN’T GET BETTER. FIRE BOWLES FIRST
January 19th, 2023 at 7:46 am
Makes me sick to my stomach to hear these words
January 19th, 2023 at 7:47 am
“The buck stops here”! Quote of a true leader years ago. ‘The Bucs stopped here’. The fact of Bowles leadership.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:51 am
No problem. Take up some other activity for a year or two and start watching college football more until the Bucs start playing competative football again.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:57 am
Every time I thiink of Bowles the first thing that comes to mind is that zero blitz that left Cooper Kupp basically alone in the middle of the field. Bucs should of repeat year.
January 19th, 2023 at 7:58 am
“For those who believe Bowles hiring his own staff should not be factored in, that is naiveté at its highest.”
Sure you factor that in but at the end of the day he still sucks and cant do the job. When you put all the variables together in an equation it still ends with Todd isn’t HC material.
January 19th, 2023 at 8:04 am
No respectable OC will come to the Bucs knowing they have a lame duck one year head coach. Should have cleaned house.
January 19th, 2023 at 8:05 am
Bowles calling out Succop is too funny. There are a lot worse things on this team to worry about seeing how Succop scored the most points… lol. The guy needs to keep his stupid mouth shut.
Bowles is total garbage and the Glazers are headed for another lost decade. The Bucs are going to be irrelevant bottom dwellers for years to come. Bowles will be the first of many bad head coaches in the next decade.
Makes me sick that he is staying. Forget a winning record and the playoffs….
January 19th, 2023 at 8:07 am
Good luck finding quality assistants to replace anyone Todd scapegoats. This place’ll be right back to being Southern Siberia. What does ownership really expect to see out of a coach they’ve employed for years now? They know who he is, how he works and the results on the field. The D was atrocious the last two playoff games. The team mediocre at best during this season. Todd’s 90s brand of football just isn’t the formula that’s succeeding in the league right now.
January 19th, 2023 at 8:09 am
Unfortunately Joe works in reality and understands how the NFL works.
January 19th, 2023 at 8:10 am
Next year will be a wasted year. The only thing that will be accomplished is that Bowles gets to prove what a bad head coach he actually is. After he tanks the team and gets fired no good NFL head coach will want to come to Tampa. Then the Glazers can go the college route. Like that will work….
January 19th, 2023 at 8:27 am
That’s probably true. Anyone that watched the team this year would also realize that regardless of “the staff,” the head coach is responsible for the performance of the whole team. Defense was decent against bad teams and got hammered against good teams. Offense was deeply offensive especially with those WRs and QB. Special teams should be put on the short bus and driven to a facility that is more conducive to their development.
Retaining the Toadster, while logical on face value, means that the Bucs will tank for draft picks in 2023, and after 2023 is when the real scorched earth teardown and rebuild will commence.
Toad talks about a “reload.” When you are reloading a squirt gun and the teams that make the playoffs have howitzers, you’ll get what you deserve Toad.
Better find a non-football related hobby over the next 12 months. You’re going to need one. There’s no hiding place from your level of suck as a head coach.

I have to agree with Willie here, Bowles was gifted a superbowl winning staff along with the GOAT and handpicked team.
I remember how I felt when the coaching change occurred last year. I had little concern because of the staff and team.
Little did I know just how much Bowles could screw up a good thing.
IMHO he had one game plan for the entire season. There was absolutely no difference from game to game to game. Apparently, he’s convinced himself that he can win just by having perfect execution of plays. Sure, perfectly executed plays are nearly impossible to defend, UNLESS you are expecting them. From game three on, whoever we met knew exactly what they were going to see from us. We all can see the results of this.
The “Beasley” incident shows that this was quite apparent to the players as well.
Accountability starts at the top.
IMO, in this situation, so does the blame.
Sorry to disagree with you Joe, but Bowles needs to go.
January 19th, 2023 at 8:31 am
He may be safe, but I do not think it is a done decision for the Glazers. He still likely has to advise them of what his plans to right the ship are, and unlike with the fans, he will have to go into detail. He cant pass the sight or smell test at that point, and many have said it already, there will not be quality offensive minds knocking on the door to coach Trask or Gabbert, or have the stomach of working for one season before Bowles tanks. He got this job because it was deemed that the coaching staff was able to be successful and have continuity. That failed tremendously. I am very surprised they would consider giving him another shot, AND pick the staff.
January 19th, 2023 at 8:31 am
HELLO!
It was not just “ last Monday night “
It was minute by minute ALL FREAK’n season !
Minute by minute every freaking game!
Whomever the next OC is he better be able to take over by Halloween!
January 19th, 2023 at 8:32 am
Joe any word on how Jamel dean damn near starts every game this season but in the biggest game of the year this bafoon toad bowles cant find any use for him??
January 19th, 2023 at 8:40 am
Think ‘15 – ‘18 Jets if you want to know what next year holds. That, and this year’s humiliating display, are his body of work. If the Glazers are still the type of owners who want to retain a coach with that resume, strap in for another lost decade. Memories of Leeman Bennett, Lovie Smith, Ray Perkins. Breathe in the stench of losing culture and remember that you are a fan of the Tampa Bay Buccaneers and that this is what it’s like most of the time.
January 19th, 2023 at 8:44 am
No decent coach will come to a team with a lame-duck HC.
Ditto for FA’s, unless they are just chasing a paycheck.
It’s like we get Radio or Schiano another year.
Once upon a time, the Glazers thought and acted big. Now they go all woke turtle.
Bowles another year? How suckingly depressing.
January 19th, 2023 at 8:47 am
So Bowel Movement will be “dead man walking” throughout the 2023 losing season. He will consistently, hurt his street cred with each presser. He will consistently throw players, assistant coaches and even Licht under the bus because, of course, how could all this losing be his fault? The Glazers are not doing him any favors by not just flushing him now. Of course, they certainly do not owe him any favors, either.
The good news for fans? we won’t be disappointed by the losing. We are fully expecting it.
January 19th, 2023 at 8:50 am
If you have a million dollar stock portfolio that has had modest but steady gains year to year and your advisor decides to retire but assures you that his hand picked successor will do as well you might give him a chance.
If that portfolio then loses value (barring a market crash), you would be foolish to keep that advisor.
Nothing for nothing, but I think the Glazers have a little more than a million dollar investment here.
January 19th, 2023 at 8:50 am
What a depressing thing to read first thing in the morning. Todd Bowles has done nothing correct as a head coach since day one. The only excuse he deserves is that he didn’t find out he was going to be head coach after the 2021 season ended.
But on a weekly basis his understanding of motivating players was appalling to 90% of the JBF followers. In the NFL you have one week or two weeks (bye) to put out a plan to your players to battle opponent with the most effective method to beat them. Bowles never made any progression fixing the issues that made the Bucs the most disappointing team in the NFL other than the Rams.
This was a veteran team mixed in with some younger players. Veterans know what to do yet them were unprepared whenever they played in the prime time games. In front of millions of eyes the team put out an effort that all of the national “big dog” NFL media members took the team to task for lack of effort and slow play.
Todd Bowles only deserves a vote of no confidence and the fan poll that Joe does very week show what everyone can see, this is a coach that doesn’t have the juice and the spark to bring his players together.
WIth him in the HC role in ’23 season expect what we saw this year go even lower. Like many fans think, they are an unwatchable product and once the fans lose faith, the players don’t care either.
January 19th, 2023 at 8:55 am

Which is why for the Glazers, keeping Tom Brady is paramount. Bowles doesn’t move the needle one way or the other. Tom Brady establishes the needle. Joe cannot stress enough how much Tom Brady means to this franchise in the big picture (ahem).
January 19th, 2023 at 9:00 am
You have to tie Todd Bowles to how he is going to financially impact this franchise for the Glazers to wake up and make the right decision. When I look at how pissed off the fans are at Todd Bowles, I see how another year with him as HC is going to cost them financially with losses in ticket sales, merchandise, etc. That’s what they need to realize. Maybe they are so rich this is just a tax right off for them, I don’t know, but if they do want a profitable franchise they need to find a competent HC and staff to coach this team. Wins = profit. Loses = loses
January 19th, 2023 at 9:07 am
Bowles seems like a good and smart person that is in the wrong job. I’m not convinced he even wants to be a head coach. The Bucs put an engineer in charge of sales and marketing. Terrible idea.
January 19th, 2023 at 9:09 am
They really need a offensive minded coach. 7 of the 8 coaches still left in the playoffs are offensive head coaches. The only one that isn’t has an elite QB and OC (Bills). It’s great the Glazers have this arbitrary rule that they can’t fire a coach after one year even though that coach took over a 13 win team and finished 2 games under 500. He will just be fired next year when they inevitably win 4 or 5 games. Only keep the HC if you want to tank.
January 19th, 2023 at 9:21 am
the glazers are waiting to have a talk with brady…
he trumps the entire staff…
brady will call the shots if he decides to stay…
if he wants byro and bowlzo gone then they are gonzo like gizmo…

***** Bowles doesn’t move the needle one way or the other. ****
This is exactly why Bowles needs to be shown the door.
Under his management the prime investment in their portfolio has lost value and may be lost completely.
Keep Bowles and I can almost guarantee that Brady walks. Lose Bowles, and there is ‘maybe’ a 50/50 chance we retain Brady (wishful thinking)
January 19th, 2023 at 9:31 am
FIRE BOWLES NOW……or prepare for the return of the Yucs.
January 19th, 2023 at 9:32 am
Keeping Bowles is insane unless ownership is resigned to an even worse season in 2023. How much more failure do the Glazers need to see before they realize he’s not a good HC? He failed with the Jets and he failed his first season here.
If they want to chase another Super Bowl in 2023, the best chance they have is to swing a deal with the Saints and Sean Payton. That deal also maximizes their chance to keep Brady for another year. My guess is they are exploring those deals right now. Brady is most likely gone if the Bucs don’t land Payton.
And if they can’t get Payton and they lose Brady, then next season will be a lost one regardless of who the coaches.
January 19th, 2023 at 9:49 am
If Joe is correct and Bowles is totally safe, then it is a very sad thing for the Bucs organization and fan base.
It also shows how little the Glazers care about their fans
January 19th, 2023 at 9:53 am
The Glazers would NEVER let go a diversity hire after one season for fear they’ll get blacklisted from Dem parties going forward.
January 19th, 2023 at 9:55 am
LOL They are already blacklisted from Democrat parties (they’re not Democrats).
January 19th, 2023 at 10:00 am
“For those who believe Bowles hiring his own staff should not be factored in, that is naiveté at its highest.”
But Joe, Bowles could have been a leader and fired the staff who were underperforming! And if his hands were tied by Licht or Glazers (ordered NOT to fire anyone), then is when Bowles should have coached up his coaches and got his whole coaching staff to become cohesive.
I get your point about it’s probably most fair to give Bowles one more year and I can sort of understand why; but, c’mon Joes, you know this guy isn’t a COACH, and that’s what all of us naive fans have been pointing out, myself included. This guy isn’t a leader of men, and isn’t a head coach, and that’s how this fan “feels” about it.
January 19th, 2023 at 10:05 am
There have been many ‘polarizing” subject written about and discussed here at JBF.
This does not seem to be one of them.
It seems to me that better than 90% of the comments are asking for the removal Bowles.
Congratulations! I haven’t seen this level of agreement on these pages, EVER!
January 19th, 2023 at 10:08 am
IF this holds true, the Bucs owners aren’t even slightly concerned with winning…
They are on a downward spiral and show 0 interest in righting the ship…
This marks the reentry of the Bucs back into Loserdom….
January 19th, 2023 at 10:15 am

20 months off before there’s a game worth watching.
NY Jets 2.0 here.
January 19th, 2023 at 10:19 am
I still haven’t heard a good answer to why Bowles didn’t stop Leftwich from running plays week after week that obviously didn’t work for this team? And I don’t know how fans can continue to call Bowles a defensive genius after that last game? Where was the genius in that game? The defense was out of position all game and clearly not ready for Dallas. I don’t think I have ever seen any team outcoached as bad as the Bucs were this year. It was the one thing that was consistent all year. Anyone who thinks a running quarterback would have done better than Brady without any run game is dilusional.

Just another half measure from the Glazers. Every coach from Bowles down should’ve been canned. They’ll be right back in this position next year.
