Todd Bowles Only Names Chris Godwin, Ryan Jensen When Asked Who Showed Playoff Form Against Dallas

January 17th, 2023

Chris Godwin

The Bucs didn’t look ready for prime time or even 1 o’clock against the Cowboys in last night’s playoff opener/closer.

It was like too many players were treating the game like something less than the winner-take-all, fight-to-the-death contest it was.

Joe asked head coach Todd Bowles today to name some players that put playoff-caliber showing on film. Bowles barely went there.

“We all came to play but we didn’t all play,” Bowles said. “When you lose a game like that, I wouldn’t sit up here and laud people for having a good performance because that’s not really true. I thought [Chris] Godwin did some very good things that way. Ryan Jensen fought, he fought. And everybody else, I can’t sit there and say somebody had a breakout game.”

Interesting that Bowles named the two players who came back from nasty knee injuries. Godwin has done it all year, improving steadily after ACL surgery last January. And Jensen was in his first game back after barely practicing following blowing his knee out in July.

Joe suspects those two might have appreciated the moment more than their Bucs brethren.

    FIRE BYRON AND BOWELS!!!!!

    Nothing else matters.

  2. HC Grover Says:

Fortunately he did not mention Bowles.

  3. SKBucsFan Says:

How does he assess the coaches performance?

  4. Dewey Selmon Says:

I thought R. White had a decent game for being a rookie in his first playoff game. The arrow is pointing up for him next season.

  5. HC Grover Says:

A quick firing of the Bowles Clown Show would give a better chance for new blood. But it appears the Carnival will continue. Complete with sideshows. One can only hope for a dunking booth. Ray Jay should add a Ferris Wheel and a Tilt a Whirl for 3rd qtr tailgate parties this fall. The head bag franchise will make a killing.

  6. Hodad Says:

Losing record as JETS coach. Losing coach for the the Bucs, and 0-1 in the playoffs.

  7. Craig Says:

It certainly wasn’t Brady. He could have evened his record, but he was in too much of a tizzy. At the moment I would rather not have him back next season, his heart isn’t in it.

Trask or even Gabbert will play with some heart and maybe get the team behind them, something Brady lost this season.

  8. SB~LV Says:

    Including the coaching staff

  9. Bucsfan13 Says:

I’m furious that Brady didn’t retire after winning the SB. It would’ve been the perfect way to end it. Get your 7th ring and without Belichick. Sure he still had some juice, but you shouldn’t wait until you’re almost finished. I love Brady, and it reminded me how Marino went out his last season. His last game was awful.

With Brady’s poor performance out there for the world to see, they are reveling in his demise. You have silly people questioning his legacy. If he only retired on top, you wouldn’t hear such nonsense. He had to be super embarrassed by that performance last night.

I know he is a free agent, but the film he put out this year for teams isn’t good at all. Remember the 49ers said they reviewed his film and passed on him because they didn’t think he was a big improvement over Jimmy G. No one cares that his OC was bad. They only care about what they see on film. They see a QB who still has some juice, but the regression is getting worse

As a fan of Tom since his days of Michigan, it’s time to let it go. Someone has to intervene now, Joe. Maybe his parents? Aaron Rodgers was on his regular weekly show on Youtube and took subtle shots at Tom. Tom is becoming the laughingstock of the league! It’s too sad.

  10. Bucsfan13 Says:

@Craig. The team was definitely behind him. They praised his leadership. Lavonte David recently said Tom was the same guy that everyone one knew. He didn’t change up. Lavonte keeps it real. He’s not a BS artist. I think I’ll take the word of his teammates and coaches over you and the stuff you imagined in your head

  11. orlbucfan Says:

We know who sure as h3ll wasn’t in so-called playoff form. Tom Asshole Fossilized Brady.

  12. Bosch Says:

Of course it is the players that are responsible for this embarrassment couldn’t possibly be coaching, now could it?

  13. Darin Says:

Oh If the coaches only knew when they were the problem

  14. PewterStiffArm Says:

With a swift firing you could invite someone to an interview party like Sean Payton. Although he might not want this mess.

  15. Davenport Says:

TODD WAS IN PRIME REGULAR SEASON FORM THOUGH.
WHO IS HE TO CRITICIZE ANYONE???

  16. BrianBucs Says:

The Bowles hiring was bad from the start.
Why would you hire a head coach who is the polar opposite of the successful coach that just retired?

  17. catcard202 Says:

2022 showed TB12 is in major decline…The pin point accuracy of yesteryear slipped…The decision making slipped…The willingness to take the hit to make the pass, slipped… Instant check down routes became the norm…Shortened intermediate routes became the norm…TB12 at 45, started playing like a 40+ yr old QB…That changed everything for the Bucs.

Leftwich’s near 70-30 pass heavy play sheet didn’t put points on the board catering to TB12’s dink&dunk preferences, as the No Risk It-No Biscuit did in 2020/2021 or what same system accomplished with JW3 slinging 30INTs & playing with a less talented roster in 2019…Which speaks volumes, IMO.

  18. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

I cant believe his secret weapon, sarcasm, didn’t get everyone ready to run through a brick wall for him. Some folks just cant be motivated.

  19. Your Mom Says:

Certainly wasn’t any of the coaching staff, that’s for sure.

  20. Kentucky Buc Says:

    Some real morons on here.

  21. Ed Says:

Bowles hasn’t done anything to wake up the slumbering Bucs. Every single playoff team played better than the Bucs and not just better but many, many times better.

Buc players don’t know what to do in clutch moments and are go through the motions. Very few teams in the NFL would put up with this type of disorganization.

Too many players have been skating by after they make their contracts. Chris Godwin played his ass off. Can’t say the same about Devin White. He is a minor defensive player. JTS doesn’t want to mix it up, he doesn’t like contact. Vea and Hicks are out of shape. Donovan Smith is a lost cause now. He is another one who isn’t in shape.

The Bucs were a lazy team this season. Maybe all of the Brady stuff at the beginning of the year gave the players an excuse to loaf. With a coach like Bowles who plays over the hill guys like Jones and Brate and doesn’t even try and develop younger guys, its obvious that the players are entitled and given their positions without production.

Just because JTS and Darden were drafted higher than they should have been, they should never have been given their jobs. The “scrubs” like Nassib and Nelson all play harder than JTS.

Bowles and Leftwich are most of the problem but the Glazer family has taken its eyes off its product and trying to sell the Bucs back to their fans is going to be a very hard sell. The product needs to be returned to where it was purchased and refunded unless the organization brings in some professionals that understand football and how to motivate players.

  22. ClwJB Says:

The team is a direct reflection of their coaching

The uninspired, lethargic, old and slow looking team playing an 80’s style in 2023

This HC is a joke and we are headed for 4 wins with him next year

  23. unbelievable Says:

Really insightful stuff right there coach, thanks.

    @ClwJB – 100%

Todd Bowles is a good coordinator but he is NOT a head coach.

  24. mark2001 Says:

So coach. Why couldn’t you motivate the rest of the guys to get into playoff form?

  25. Manny Says:

Godwin is in top form every single week. That guy is just incredie

  26. The Anomaly Says:

WHat did Jensen grade out at…didn’t think he played well

  27. Wild Bill Says:

Godwin was the best Buc player in the game. But I feared all the hard hits he kept taking were get him killed! There isn’t a tougher receiver in the league. Brady was so worried about getting hit he hardly ever gave the wideouts time to run their routes. I don’t think there is an NFL receiver with bigger balls than Godwin. Brady unloaded as fast as he could all game. I just didn’t see the passion to win in Brady. Not much more than a cold faced Tom going through the motions. Too often all season it was the opposing teams showing more enthusiasm and all out effort. Sneaking into the playoffs with a losing record was a true measure of the Bucs. The embarassing effort against Dallas was typical of the entire season.

  28. Goatfarmer Says:

Toad’s Bowels blame the players. How about looking in the mirror and realizing that you took a 13-4 team with one of the best offenses ever and completely destroyed it.

Resign and go sell insurance or cars or enema kits. The latter would be the best fit.

  29. mark2001 Says:

Goatfarmer… looking and the mirror, admitting and realizing his responsibility? I could be wrong, but based upon what I’ve seen and heard this season, don’t think that is his style.

  30. steele Says:

Look at that Bowles quote. It’s like he’s an outsider, judging players as if an outsider (he’s so distant and disconnected that he just about is), if he has no responsibility for their “not playing”. I’ll tell you who didn’t “play”: Todd Bowles and Byron Leftwich. Here was the moment they could have proven to the world that they could get a great 4 quarters of great NFL football out of their team. FAIL.

Brady should have hung them up after winning the last Super Bowl. Somewhere around tossing the Lombardi across the water to Gronk. Go out on top, never look back.

Instead, the man’s insatiable love for the sport, win or lose, dragged him back, even at the cost of dumping his family life for it. He isn’t the only legend who couldn’t stop the addiction and hung around too long. But it is painful to see his legacy tarnished by this season. Even if he’d have stopped after the Rams loss, having essentially won the damned game (only for Bowles to lose it), it was a high.

Now? It’s ugly. He has no good options. No red carpet/Peyton Manning Denver Broncos gift assignments.

  31. BucU Says:

Chris Godwin and Tristan Wirfs are the only 2 untouchables out of 53. EVERYBODY else can kiss my ass. That means the coaches too.

  32. TJ Says:

Need a more aggressive head coach. Not one who is a loser…
