“Hot And Cold” Logan Hall Needs The Weight Room

Tough talk on the Bucs’ opening pick in the 2022 NFL Draft.
Rookie defensive tackle Logan Hall, the No. 33 overall pick in the draft, didn’t look good against the run on Sunday when the Buccaneers emptied their bench against a Falcons team giving its all.
To Joe’s surprise, head coach/defensive playcaller Todd Bowles went there on the Buccaneers Radio Network and noted that Hall needs to get stronger.
Bowles praised the entire D-line as solid, except Hall.
“Logan was hot and cold as far as [run defense],” Bowles said. “When he gets in the weight room and gets some more strength next year, I think he’s trending in the right direction and he’s going to really help us. He’s going to turn out to be pretty good. Everybody else was solid [Sunday]. Everybody else down there was solid for the most part in the first group and then the backups came in. Again, we got out of our gaps a few plays and it cost us.”
At 22 years old, Hall certainly should be expected to add more man weight and strength in the offseason. Sunday was his greatest workload of the season by far, 47 snaps. His previous high was 38 in Week 5 and his playing time tailed off significantly from there.
After hearing Bowles, now it makes more sense why Hall hasn’t been seeing more of the field, as rookies typically do late in a season.

Yeah, typical of many rookies, a offseason of diet and weight training and he’ll be better prepared to compete next year, same with just about every rookie other than OL , those beasts usually come into the league with size and strength, just behind in the pro tricks and techniques

Bucs have done a pretty good job developing DL talent over the last decade.
Gholston and Anthony Nelson seemed like nobodys early in their careers and they’ve become impactful.
Barrett and Nassib were relative nobodies before the Bucs signed them the first time around.
A few busts in there, like Noah and Akeem Spence, but I’m pretty optimistic JTS and Hall will continue to improve.

There is also the rookie wall from playing more games than ever before.
A big shock to many top college guys is that they are no longer bigger or faster than anyone else. It always takes a couple of years for D linemen to bloom. Look at how Anthony Nelson blossomed this season, he looked horrid as a rookie too.

You probably wouldn’t have wanted to order him to be on a strength building program this season. That would have required you to actually, you know, communicate. Talk to the player. Make sure he understands what he is supposed to do. Instead of “nothing needs to be said.”

Eh. Pretty good job developing backups, maybe. Outside of Shaq (who they picked up off the sidewalk), when is the last time the Bucs developed a good pass rusher (meaning a guy who can consistently get a minimum of eight sacks a year)?
You could make an argument the Bucs haven’t developed a (good) pass rusher since Lee Roy Selmon.
Actually Gerald McCoy was pretty good, to be fair.

I believe Cappa was in a similar situation where he needed time to develop. I would expect a big improvement in years 2 and 3.

Hall’s biggest contribution this season was taking out Jensen. How many wins did that cost the Bucs? 2-4 would be my guess.

To be fair, putting on muscle during a season doesn’t really happen. The training mostly revolves around recovery and rehab, from what I understand. Putting on muscle isn’t realistic until offseason when that can become the sole focus.

Logan Who? Your top picks are expected to contribute. All the rookies all over the place this year and we pick some guy that has to “grow up”. That’s for the late rounds and 33rd in the draft. My guess was “Noah and Akeem” had better rookie years than this guy. Why should we expect a better outcome?

You’re complaining about a team full of back ups against another teams starters not scoring. They are backups for a reason you simpleton. No team in this league has pro bowlers and future hall of famers filling up the back end of their roster.

Dude is buried behind Vea, Hicks, Nacho, & Gholston. Idk about “rookie wall” but it’s much different approach than what the staff took with JTS last season and the volume of snaps he played as a year 1 player. Hall will be fine, but Jake Camarda is going to also be going through the offseason workout regiment as well and could probably backup as a safety next season on top of being the Uncle Rico of punts

Hall isn’t heavy enough to play the middle (a la VV). Nor is he creative enough to play edge. Hopefully they pic a spot for him and develop the size or technique required. He is a very good athlete and can improve.

Sasquatch – yeah, you’re right. I’m just so sick of Toad’s flaccid coaching, it makes everything else that much more intolerable. Regardless, anyone watching knows that the Bucs have struggled with “communication” and blown assignments all throughout Blowes’ tenure. It’s over-documented. Fully expect the O-Line to whiff many key blocking assignments, and definitely expect a few Cowboys WRs and TEs running wide ass open in the secondary because everyone thought it was someone else’s job to cover those guys.

Joe, I think Bucs found a true gem in Michael Bennett from the scrap heap and developed him to be a menace. He was never a high sack totals guy, which is why when adamant Schiano regime let him walk, he only managed a mediocre prove it deal with the Seahawks, who realized his full value and made him their mainstay for the dominant defenses they fielded for 4 years. Outside of that, you are right, Bucs don’t have a history of success in developing pass rushers. The current regime has not displayed that ability yet. We just happened to luck into Shaq Barrett the same way Hawks lucked into Bennett.
I don’t have much confidence in Logan Hall developing into anything more than a Anthony Nelson type at best by the time his contract ends. Our standards are pretty low, I can see some fans considering that type of productivity to be a win.

Hitting the weights usually requires hitting something else. Maybe Hall hasn’t figured that out yet. IMO they’re all doing something. Not being judgemental, I’m just not naive. You still have to put the work in.

He gets to high off the snap and loses leverage immediately – not an inside DT at the NFL level, period.
He is a will gholston replacement at best if he gains another 20-30lbs of muscle – never play him at 1 or 3 tech except on 3rd and long

Just ignore those idiots. Every player drafted needs to be a pro bowler immediately or they call them a bust… We all know it takes 3 to 4 years to figure out if someone’s a bust.
Some of them say that about every single rookie just so they can say “look at me, I was right’” in a few years when one or two of them are an actual bust.
I think they actually root for their failure more than they root for these kids straight out of college to succeed. It’s pathetic.

Under Todd Blowes, a lot of players not named Antoine look like busts because they don’t know what they’re doing. They think they know and then BAM missed gap, stonewalled pass rush, failure to drop in coverage, Blowes has them making the same mistakes over and over. Indication that they don’t correct their mistakes in practice because no one is telling them to.

Hall has regressed this season and was exposed in the ATL game. Look a guy who is a pseudo #1 pick has to contribute in some fashion. Rookie defensive lineman rarely do much their rookie years, that’s very very well known, in particular when they’re undersized and coming from a program where they’re playing a lot of low level talent. This coming offseason will be huge for him, and next year when is when you start to really judge if he’s any good or not.

Hall was a project. Only had 1 sack going into his senior year . Played in a lower conference at Houston and had a huge jump just with competition. Played DT but projected more as a 3-4 end in the NFL. This was a high upside pick that wasn’t a fit anywhere on the line to take big minutes. I am not sure his frame is ever going to be a 3 down interior lineman. I didn’t think it was the right pick in win now mode.
