Derek Carr And The Bucs

December 29th, 2022

“Derek, if you come to Tampa, we will have to hit up “The Undertow.” But only after we get wings at Hooters on John’s Pass.”

Well, this didn’t take long.

Shortly after it was announced that the Raiders have benched Derek Carr, which was a blunt signal they plan to release him right after the Super Bowl to save an astronomical guarantee of $40.4 million, Carr was given permission to leave the team for the remainder of the season. And he took the Raiders up on the offer. He’s done in Las Vegas.

So folks quickly connected the dots that with serious weapons in Las Vegas, Tom Brady, a free agent after the season, might want to link up with his long-time Belicheats offensive coordinator Josh McDaniels, the Raiders coach.

So clearly that scenario would mean the Bucs have an opening at quarterback.

Eric Edholm of NFL.com threw together a list of teams that could land Carr. And yes, the Bucs are one of them.

It’s feeling more likely that Tom Brady isn’t going to be back in Tampa next season — either retiring or going elsewhere for one more year. (Possibly even to Las Vegas to reunite with McDaniels.) Unless the Bucs feel that Blaine Gabbert or Kyle Trask deserve to be Brady’s successor, which doesn’t feel likely, Tampa Bay should be in the market for help. This team was built to win now with Brady in tow, although the Bucs’ extremely tight cap situation makes this a tough fit — even if Brady’s monster salary were to come off the books.

The Bucs have enough talent returning next year that they shouldn’t be a bad team (though with Brady this year they are 7-8). And especially if the Bucs add a competent offensive coordinator, that could breathe needed life into the offense.

But if the Bucs couldn’t win with Brady, how are they supposed to win with a lesser quarterback?

This is the rock and a hard place that Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht will find himself between. Does Licht try to squeeze in a veteran starter under the salary cap who has playoff experience and try to make a run?

Or should Licht just say, “Aw, the hell with it,” start Kyle Trask and go full-throttle #CollapseForCaleb? Or maybe just settle for Drake Maye?

  4. Allbuccedup Says:

Derek Carr would definitely an upgrade over Trask or Gabbert and is mobile something Brady wasn’t. But with Todd Bowles it doesn’t really matter 2023 will be worse than 2022 as long as hes at the helm.

  5. DungyDance Says:

The last question posed will be answered this Sunday. Garage sale may be looming.

  6. ClwJB Says:

Brady is why we are not 4-11 right now, not Bowles

Lose Brady and Bowles runs this place deeper into the ground than it already is

  7. alton green Says:

Tom’s massive salary?????????? He HAS NEVER EVER been the highest paid QB in the league. It’s been several years since the Vikings signed a $90 million contract with their QB, Cousins, 100% guaranteed ZERO SBs. The Chiefs signed fancy feet to a half $billion contract. SB’s? 1 Overpaid Tom? SBs? 7

  8. Beej Says:

All Bowles wants a QB to do is hand off anyway, no sense overpaying for the position

  9. Jerry Says:

May not have the money anyway. If Brady leaves, it costs the Bucs $35 million in debt cap space next year. The dead cap space goes even higher if some of these other guys bolt. We’ve mortgaged the future for these 3 years.

  10. Teflon Don Says:

This guy really sucks! The same ppl who complained about Jameis want this bum lol. There is a reason the raiders are benching him why would we want someone who got bench for Jarrett Stidham?

  11. Marine Buc Says:

    D. Carr = Trent Dilfer 2.0

    @ Beej

If that is the case why not just start Trask next season?

    @ Joe

Carr only gets the $40M if he is unable to pass a physical at the end of the season…

  12. SKBucsFan Says:

No thanks. Would rather sign Daniel Jones from the Giants if they do something stupid and not extend him.

  13. BucsFanSince76 Says:

Bucs will resign Brady and save a ton on salary cap by doing so-oline deficiency will be cleaned up and Bucs go back at another title-simple.

  14. Jp09 Says:

Carr couldn’t win with Adams, Waller and Jacobs. What makes you think he could win here?

  15. Goatfarmer Says:

The Glazers and Licht must put the full court press on Tom, starting with the coaching, then the offensive line and scheme / playbook. If he still wants to leave the team at 46 to learn a new system with new players, then let the insider stories from OBP about him loose. Let them flow. His reputation is starting to crack a little. Such extra drama on what would appear to be a pure mercenary move doesn’t fit the script — except this is menopausal Tom Brady now, so anything goes it seems.

  16. Gofortheface30 Says:

Just how much longer do you think a 46yr old (next yr) is going to play? So you’re gnna pass up one of the extremely RARE moments that a fairly young, pretty good QB is on the market? This year to year bullshi is asinine. You cannot build your future around a year to year 46yr old. Jesus Christ we need sustainability, an IDENTITY. Time to move on weirdos

  17. Jack Clark Says:

90% of our problems would be fixed if Todd Bowels just got the F* out of the way of our offense like he did his first two years here. When we had offensive minded head coaches like Jon Gruden, Dirk Koetter, and Bruce Arians our team was exciting to watch. Fans want to see points, not punts! There is no NFL team with a defensive minded head coach that’s exciting to watch.

  18. Buddha Says:

Quit looking at TB12 through rose colored glasses. His play has deteriorated. He is still a smart qb, but his arm strength and accuracy have declined.

  19. BucsFanSince76 Says:

The “Weirdos” are the bassackwards few that do not want to keep the best QB of all time.

  20. Tampabaybucfan Says:

So….let me see if I get this correctly.

Carr couldn’t win with LV even with all those “serious” weapons.
Brady couldn’t win in Tampa with all those “serious” weapons.

So, the two players will switch teams and try to win.

And, how are we going to afford Carr?

  21. mark2001 Says:

I suggested Carr about 6 months ago as a possibility to replace Brady when he leaves. It was scoffed at, so I’ll leave it at that. But I don’t have any reason to believe that Trask is truly the answer.

  22. mark2001 Says:

I think the question about him is, where is he mentally? Has he been damaged to the point of no return? With the right coaching I think we would be in good shape with him. but I don’t think we have the right coaching right now.

  23. Smashsquatch Says:

Run, run, third and long, punt. Does it really matter who the QB is?

  24. #8's Ghost Says:

    Suh.

  25. Joe Says:

Carr only gets the $40M if he is unable to pass a physical at the end of the season…

Or he is on the Raiders roster three days after the Super Bowl. That won’t be a problem any longer.

  26. geno711 Says:

Raiders have Mike Lombardi as offensive coordinator and Josh McDaniel as head coach. Not sure that Brady or anyone else will see that as a destination place unless they are paid big money.

  27. Beej Says:

    @ Beej

Fair point. That being said, everyone thought Ryan Tannehill was a bust until he got away from the Fins

  28. Jeff Says:

Joe said “talent.” I guess their is some talent here. Just not where it counts.

  29. Cobraboy Says:

If Brady is gone, I will take Carr at the right price.

Truth is, we have no idea what Trask is made of.

That said, Trask as QB without a high-priced option on the roster takes enormous pressure off the pending cap crunch.

I’m all for a rebuild and cap resolution.

I will be shocked if Brady is a Buc in 2023, especially if Bowles & Gang is still in the building.

  30. HC Grover Says:

If Bowzo is still here I no longer care. I would be an Anti-Fan. Bring on the Head Bags.

  31. Buczilla Says:

If we don’t win a playoff game these coaches have got to go. If Brady leaves and a new coach wanted Carr, I’d be fine with it. He’s above average and we could do a lot worse.

  32. Craig Says:

It has been an unremarkable year for washed up QBs. None of them has done much, even Brady looks old.

Carr would be a waste here, he is a diva, not a team play, or he would have accepted being benched for a while.

It irks me that anyone can say he is an upgrade over Trask, when Trask has been given no chance to try and see if he can make it. His coach, Christensen, said before the season that he was not going to get any reps this season.

The Bucs have turned into the Jets with a dysfunctional management team.

  33. Jerry Says:

Bowles is determined to make this a run-first, power running offense, whether it wants to be that or not. So he will want a more mobile QB that fits into that system. That’s his style of football. And that’s what we will be stuck with until we realize that type of game isn’t as successful in today’s NFL. Not sure Trask, Gabbert, or Carr fits into that system either.

  34. Bucobill999 Says:

Regardless of what happens this year its time to blow it up only players not on trade block are wirfs and Winfield rest can be had for draft pick

  35. NEfan Says:

He can’t hurt you except his contract uses the terms NO trade and FULLY guaranteed in them. If you fans think he is an upgrade to Brady you’re delusional.

  36. Buccos Says:

Carr has had many opportunities and has failed. Trask hasn’t had an opportunity yet. Trask is on a rookie 2nd round contract. Trask is next in line. I would like to see what he can do.

  37. D-Rok Says:

If Brady leaves, I think if Trask is really the QB of the future, you need to have a veteran presence to help mentor him. Agree that Carr is above average, but have no idea if he would be a good mentor or not. Was it Carr that made comments a year or two ago about “it’s not my job” to teach other QB’s, or am I mistaken?

Well, that’s the future, and I try not to worry about tomorrow, today. Today we have a big game on Sunday, and we’ll see what happens after the season, after the season.

    GO BUCS!!!

  38. ocala Says:

If Brady leaves I would start Trask and look to trade away high priced players that are older than 29. Have a 3-14 season and potentially the top pick in the draft.

  39. BOAT Says:

Derek Carr: 63-80 record, zero playoff wins as a starter
    T
odd Bowles: 32-49 record, zero playoff wins as a head coach

Let’s just go with that, rather than just fire Bowles, hire a competent head coach, and then keep Brady.

    Yeah, makes perfect sense……..

  40. Bobby M. Says:

Let’s look at Licht’s body of work….just from his record, we wont get into the absolute draft busts.

    2014 – 2-14
    2015 – 6-10
    2016 – 9-7
    2017 – 5-11
    2018 – 5-11
    2019 – 7-9
    2020 – 11-5 (Super Bowl)
    2021 – 13-4
    2022 – 7-8

We caught Lightning in a bottle with Brady in 2020/2021. The majority of the time Licht’s roster isn’t competitive. In 9 seasons we’ve had FOUR different HC’s…..that’s absurd. The common denominator in all of this is Licht. We lost 3 starters on the 0-line, 2 of which were pro bowl caliber as well as an all pro TE and replaced them with rookies and back ups? It’s not hard to see why this team is struggling. On top of that, the HC Licht brought in decides to call it quits before training camp leaving the staff and roster hanging. If we’re going to blow this thing up, let’s do it with someone else.

  41. TheBucsAnthem Says:

Sometimes all it takes is a change in scenery to make any player play better…….

If you think the Bucs are dysfunctional right now…..then the Raiders takes the whole cake.

The Raiders went through all that craziness with Antonio Brown and then next Jon Gruden……then Josh McDaniels playroom.

Let’s just be honest here…..Derek Carr is still an extremely gifted QB….he just needs stability and the right system.

I believe if Bruce Arians coached Derrick Carr…..then he’d become a Top 5 QB in no time.

    JMHO

  42. Bobby M. Says:

I have zero faith in Licht’s putting together a roster than Carr can win with.

  43. Tye Says:

    I wouldn’t hate Carr as QB…

    Better Carr than Gabbert…
Its the Bucs fault for not playing Trask at any point so fans may have confidence in him..
Carr better than most other vet options this far…

The best qb n the game can’t win as long as Blows is HC so theres that!

  47. Capece is Kaput Says:

I’d rather gamble with Trask or Gabbert to see if they have anything than just pay for Carr and finish 7-10. That dude has a dark cloud over his head.

  48. Brandon Jeff Says:

Well, I’m not averse to Carr, I would still like to see what Trask can do. Back in the day, a rookie quarterback would sit behind the incumbent for a few years before he took over the reins.
I believe this tremendously, aided the rookies introduction into the league. Everyone wants to see instant success however or the player is labeled a bust. For Trask, a player with obvious talent in college, to come in and sit behind the goat for a few years is obviously the best case scenario. So I think it’s too soon to pass judgment on this.
As far as Trask, not being able to beat out, Gabbert, we have to remember the well-known loyalties to Gabbert that are involved here. Or it could be just that Trask is being protected until it is his time to step in.

  49. DoooshLaRue Says:

    Mark2001,

I agree with both your posts on Carr. I was all for luring him here before Brady became available. He can be very good at times and his overall stats aren’t bad, but he may be a bit of a head case.
Who knows at this point. I just want to see us get out of this Brady drama and build a better team.
No, it’s not just TB, but I’m ready for a change.

  50. Costa Rica John Says:

Better go out and find a coach that has a history of winning against Sean Peyton. I would worry more about him returning than Brady leaving.

  51. Winny Testaverde Says:

No. Please no. I live here in Las Vegas and Carr is incredibly un-clutch. The Raiders are a playoff team if he doesn’t shat down his leg…time and again this season. They blew multiple double digit leads…in large part because Carr couldn’t manufacture a first down here and there.

Embrace the suck of 2023…take the cap hits and launch Operation Trask Force. It will give those clamoring for him a reality pimp slap as well.

Sure seems like The Raiders are setting the table for a Brady + Gronk combo. Two excellent tight ends…( which Brady likes/thrives with ) and Josh Jacobs might re-sign given the acquisition(s).

  52. Oneilbuc Says:

The bucs don’t have the money to pay Carr or Brady and keep our young players . It’s time to go young not old!!

  53. Jack Clark Says:

If Todd Bowels wants to win by only scoring 17 points a game then we should be investing all our money into lock down cornerbacks and edge rushes instead of people who play offense

  54. Eric b Says:

A question though, how can other teams fire there coaches for poor performance and we dont?

That and the fact that it will make our male cheerleader cry like……. a female cheerleader?

  57. Aceofaerospace Says:

For whatever reason, Trask has never been allowed to wear a game day uniform. Is that his fault or coaching. We don’t know and may never know. It would be nice to at least see him suit up before we throw away a 2nd round pick. If we squeak out a win Sunday, start Trask against Atlanta. Let’s see what he can do before we toss him to the curb.

  58. Browsing from DC Says:

If Bowles is back, Brady is gone. If that happens then it would seem Licht & Co. approve of his “run first” philosophy and will bolster the o-line, which will already be improved with the return of Jensen. They already have 2 quality, young backs in Lenny and White (Lenny will only be 27…seems like he’s been around longer).

As for QB, Carr is a “decent” QB but perhaps he doesn’t have the football IQ if he struggled with McDaniels’ playback this season with all the weapons he had? He’s only made the playoffs twice and never won a playoff game. Starting Trask probably makes more sense to see what he has when Bowles’ style won’t ask much of him and the season will most likely be painful to watch anyway.

Carr will want “elite QB money” but he’s not an elite QB. He’s just hyped a lot by the media types. See Kyler Murray as an example. The QB options are slim pickings and the Bucs won’t be an attractive destination for a free agent QB with Bowles at the helm.

Brady’s options will be limited as well. There are only 2 or 3 teams that could make sense for him to want to go to (SF or LV mainly) but they have to also want him.

Bowles has really upset the apple cart here in Tampa. Sean Payton as HC makes more an more sense to me lately. Leftwich as his OC might work to help restore some confidence in BL. Plus, with Payton on a multi-year deal, you get Brady back and a coach who can develop Trask or another promising young QB to take over after Brady.

Problem with Payton (aside from the bidding war for his services) is that he will want personnel control/GM duties so that will really test the Glazers’ loyalty to Licht. I would bet that Payton already has his eye on one or two promising young backup QBs that he would like to pick up and mold as well.

All of the speculation for the future looking brighter goes out the window if the Bucs keep Bowles as HC. Finding an upgrade for him wouldn’t be hard (Bieniemy, etc).

If the Bucs don’t move hard on Payton now, he’ll be in Denver getting some of that big Walton (Walmart) money to try to save them from themselves and Rusell Wilson.

Back to Derek Carr. Why not Heineke from Washington instead? Much cheaper and about the same quality except Heineke seems to have more fire and grit. Probably wouldn’t make a difference.

The window of opportunity is closing fast on our Bucs and mediocrity is right around the corner if they don’t act fast and think big. I can foresee a total rebuild coming and guys like Evans getting traded for draft picks wouldn’t surprise me.

  59. catcard202 Says:

Carr makes more sense for NO-WAS-NYJ-IND vs TB.

  60. NEfan Says:

Doosh, now that you brought that up, I find it very frustrating the Bucs cheerleaders don’t wear shorty shorts. Your cheerleader suk.

Oneiltobrady, Carr, Trask, Gabbert, R.Wilson, Z.Wilson, Mayfield, Jackson, I could care less as long as Brady leaves this 1960’s style offense. Carr has Runthrow, Waller, Jacob’s, Adam’s, Crosby, Jones and can’t find a way to win with one of the best offensive coaches in the league, he should fit in this losing organization perfectly. Go for it!!!

  61. Winny Testaverde Says:

The chance of Payton coming to Tampa…for a multitude of reasons…is next to nothing/zero. He’s a good coach…a sup-par person ( in my opinion ) and will fetch The Taints some high draft picks. Can’t imagine they’d deal with Tampa…and the max 1st round picks a team can trade at one time is 3. Maybe they’d settle for JTS, Logan Hall ( technically a high 2nd…I know ) and next years 1st?! 🙂

  62. Mike Johnson Says:

    NOPE.

  63. D-Rok Says:

    Browsing from DC,

Good points about Payton, but, I just read an article within the last week that said he has been spending the last year recruiting and hand-picking all of his coaching staff – none of which includes any current Bucs coaches.

So, if Payton were to come to Tampa, he would likely retain none of our current coaches, if the article is true. And who knows what he’d do to our roster. Hopefully re-stock the O-line, at the least, and get younger.

  64. Cobraboy Says:

Payton will NOT come to the Bucs.

Brady will NOT be a Buc in 2023.

  65. Elita Vita Says:

Exactly why Bowles needs to stick around. Licht has an awful history of coaches, but BA and Bowles scouted great coaches with history they’ve had tog. Same coaches that won a championship and lost at the end of division game last year. Brady got the noodle arm and people wanna put it all on coaching and oline. Love Brady for life what he did in Tampa, but it’s difficult to coach a guy that for any reason doesn’t have it anymore.

  69. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    Mord Says:
“Isn’t he interceptioney enough to negatively remind Licht & co of Jameis?”

Actually, no. His TD to INT ratio isn’t bad at all. He’s only had a QB rating below 86 one year in his career, and that was early on.

He’s had absolutely horrible offensive line play during his career…only getting fewer than 25 sacks twice in 9 years. This year is at 27. Fumbled 4 times this year, lost none.

    24 TDs, 14 INTs in 2022.

I would take him in a heartbeat. The only thing missing is the wins…but it was The Raiders.

  70. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Fair point…but the numbers do not tell it all. Jason Licht built a great team, and Arians was the first coach the Glazers let him pick. Up until then, it was their way or the highway.

That’s why he was so fired up when he got Arians. He knew he had struck gold with his choice.

  73. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

The arrival of Brady proved one thing beyond a doubt…all we needed with the team was a good QB.

Remember, Licht could not get rid of Winston without owner agreement. He probably had to beg them to let him pick the new QB…and picking the right HC went a long way in them letting him.

  74. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

Those who have been around long enough know I was down on Jason Licht in the early years. He was just starting out as a GM…so there were some really bad growth years.

Since then, he has gotten better and better. Now, I’m totally sold on him. And with good reason.

It is 100% on Oline and HC.

If the oline had been healthy, Brady would have been done better. The turnovers are all a result of bad Oline play, because the starters were not there. Don’t see how you can deny that at all.

As far a Bowles…a HC has to make his team believe they can and should win. He is far too low energy for that.

  76. Buccaneer Bonzai Says:

    100% on oline and HC?

It’s a team sport to start. Brady threw 5200 yards and 42 TDs last year. A guy who got 5200 yards and 42 TDs last year is over throwing, under throwing, behind, too far in front. I pay attention to games and these things happen when he has plenty time, plenty of times. That was a guaranteed TD for Julio and a solid sh!tty throw from the goat. I think he has at least one major physical injury. He would just never make it public.

Derek Carr is awful. A loser. A loser who has failed every attempt to envelop him with great/new coaches and personnel.

If he is the starter for the Bucs, prepare for years of mediocrity. Not just the current version (a complex cesspool of factors) but genuine… mediocrity.

Save the jack and play Trask or Gabbert. Or get to work drafting a good QB.

  85. Oneilbuc Says:

Bob . It’s not hating when you telling the truth. No one is taking nothing from what Brady done in the past but this is 2022 and he’s 45 years old and he’s has declined.

“It’s not hating when you telling the truth.”

I can’t say Brady is anything better than the best you’ve had, in a long time as NFL bottom feeders, and it seems your just repeating what New England was saying about Brady before he started QBing on your Tampa Bay team.

I don’t want tom brady to las vegas raider. He go different team then raiders

  89. Power of Pewter Says:

Without Brady this team is sitting at 4 wins right now. I don’t see any way Brady returns, given cap issues, subpar OLine, and uncertain coaching/OC situation. I say clean house including Licht, clear cap, and have a rebuild year.

  90. Rand Says:

With the O-line in shambles it has affected Brady’s play mentally, physically, and emotionally. Without taking anything away from the G.O.A.T he just isn’t the right fit right now. He needs a team like the Eagle’s offensive line. Our team would do better with a mobile QB who’s a threat to run. Only a mobile QB can tame the pass rush. Someone young with some mobility like Kyle Trask. Right now defensives fronts are pinning their ears back and are on top of Brady fast knowing he’s not going to scramble.

  91. Fartman Says:

we gotta either draft a qb or ride with Trask. with no cap space you gotta hope you get lucky with a qb on a rookie deal.

  92. Idahobucfan4life Says:

Maybe we could get Glennon back.

  93. E.T Says:

Thank you, Tom Brady. But good bye. Let’s ride out with Trask.
