More Hurry-Up? Maybe, But Todd Bowles Doesn’t Seem Overly Excited

December 7th, 2022

Bucs coach Todd Bowles.

There is no question when the Bucs run a hurry-up offense, they move the ball. They score.

This is all well-documented by stats. The Bucs are one of the best offenses in the league when they go hurry-up. When the Bucs are lassoed by failing offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich, they are a plodding, ineffective offense. One of the worst in the NFL.

Speaking yesterday, it sure didn’t seem as if Bucs coach Todd Bowles is willing to jump into the pool feet-first when asked if the Bucs may run more hurry-up.

“Well, we’ve implemented it some,” Bowles said. “We did it against Atlanta. I thought we did it a little bit … It was either Carolina or Pittsburgh, as well.

“We can implement it more. Obviously, we can’t do that the whole game – the defense and special teams would be worn out. But we can try to take advantage of some things that way.

“Really, it’s a block here and a block there, a play here and a play there for us to continue keeping offensive drives alive.”

It sounds to Joe that Bowles has convinced himself that running a possession offense is what he wants to run, and damn it, if the Bucs can just get an extra block here or there they won’t need to run a hurry-up.

Guys, the Bucs are 12 games into a season. If this offense only needed an extra block here or there, wouldn’t there be much more evidence than scoring 16 or 18 points a game?

It seems Bowles hopes the Bucs don’t have to use a hurry-up. Yeah, Joe gets it, you cannot do that the whole game. But dang, you know, three series in a half shouldn’t break these guys.

Joe understands why Bowles doesn’t want to run a modern (fast-paced) offense. He firmly believes the no-risk-it; no-biscuit offense had players gassed at the end of the season and that’s why they lost to the Rams.

If Bowles isn’t careful, he’s going to play it so safe to ensure guys have energy in January that they won’t even be playing in January.

Worked for the Bills in the 1990’s as the ran a hurry up offense to 4 straight Super Bowls.

  2. yar Says:

they need to score quick in the beginning and then go ground and pound. Score some points first. I’m sure BL is just calling the games as he’s told by Bowles and that is a huge failure.

  3. Lord Cornelius Says:

“He firmly believes the no-risk-it; no-biscuit offense had guys gassed at the end of the season and that’s why they lost to the Rams.”

If that’s true then we need to fire this guy yesterday lol.

The team is averaging less time of possession than we did last year. So they are going to be even more gassed I guess. We are 6-6 and if not for miracle Brady drives be 4-8, so this philosophy is not a winning one. There really is no justification. Please be more accountable than this lol.

IMO they went into this year scared to trust the O-line to make explosive plays and hold up in pass pro to lean on the pass first the way we have the last 2 years. They should have been prioritizing explosive plays or chunk plays that can still hide an O-line, because this offense does not work without big pass plays being a constant threat. If i had to guess that’s where the struggles have started philosophically.

  4. George Says:

Yar, complete agree, run the hurry up at the beginning. Get a lead then go ground and pound. Could you imagine how well the D would play with a lead

  5. #8's Ghost Says:

Go hurry-up until they can afford to run out the clock, score zero points via a ineffective offense? Seems a bit obvious to me (and I’m dead from them also screwing up by not signing Suh).

  6. Bucfan Says:

Wonder who is calling the plays when the Bucs use the hurry up?

  7. Anonymous Says:

He has a low scoring game fetish

  8. BucU Says:

Make no mistake this coaching staff can and will get us bounced in the playoffs if we do win the division.
We can not forget we had 3 points at home with 5 min remaining in the most important game of the year.
We won in spite of Bowles/Leftwich.

  9. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

LOL, we lost to the Rams because despite a heroic comeback, the all out blitz called by Bowles at the end of the game left Cooper Kupp one on one, and allowed him to score a winning TD.

  10. DBS Says:

And don’t forget. Another 1st quarter with no TD this year. Adds to another sick record.

  11. Bird Says:

Well. That mentality will get him fired faster so we got that going for us! 😂

How stupid are these coaches? Thanks arians for dumping these guys in our laps.

Then run the hurry up every other possession if you are worried about dudes conditioning . Anything to avoid slowing things down so leftwich can run up the middle again and again and again.

  12. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Is it the hurry up offense…..or is it the fact that we are forced to be more aggressive?
When you take BL out of it and place Brady at the helm….things work much better…
I think Brady calling more plays is the answer.

We simply don’t play action enough on first downs….it seems we play as if it’s an obligation to run on 1st downs,

It’s actually comical how predictable it is…….every single game.

  13. Statistically Insignificant Reader Says:

Really Bowls? Don’t want to go ” hurry up ” because our defense may get tired? WTF. Bowls still blames the Super Bowl loss on everyone was tired? Sickening, no responsiblity on his part? Bowls and Leftwich are a circle jerk shet show.

  14. Tucker Says:

They are going three and outs after three and outs doing what they are doing now with the defense on the field so often currently so exactly how are they going to be more tired? Lol They definitely need to attack more than they are now but it doesn’t seem like they learn much more perfume on an awful season they won’t be able to be conservative against good teams if they expect to win.

  15. Buc4evr Says:

The hurry up no huddle stresses the opponent’s defense and they can’t stack the box. Why the heck wouldn’t the Bucs do it at the beginning of the game to score as many points as possible? Didn’t we run the no huddle a lot when Jameis is was QB.

  16. DG060 Says:

This incompetent coaching staff is just too much for me. They have changed NOTHING offensively in a year where we struggle to score every single game.
No different schemes. No adjustments during games. Clock mismanagement that directly cost us at least 1 game. It’s the same damn thing every single game.
It took a miracle to get the 2 wins vs the Rams and Saints. Take those 2 Brady miracles away and we’re 4-8. This coaching staff should not be let off the hook for another garbage gameplan. These coaches get to enjoy the fruits of a big win when they should be ridiculed and punished for their cowardness and incompetence.

  17. Fitz Says:

Anyone who thinks running the ball up the middle every first down is a great is is not that bright. Hopefully they will be told by ownership that if you want to keep your job you better give Brady the option to run a hurry up offense more often. Best case scenario is Bowles and Leftwich don’t listen and get fired

  18. Jeffs Dad Says:

Were like 2 plays from being 4-7 so we aint it yet

  19. NEfan Says:

BucU, correct but at least the players will be fresh going into the off-season. This guy is a moron. You throw up 30 points anyway you can then you let teams like Pittsburgh, GB, Cleveland, Saints with shatty offenses see if they can match you. Never heard a coach say he wants to preserve his special teams. There has to be a lot of head scratching at One Bucs Place. Where the h#ll is BA? Nevermind, he can’t shat on Brady so he’s waiting it out. I am prepared for him to tell us how punting on 4th down was the situational football he taught Bowels. How about the 1st 4th & 3 he didn’t go for that netted 20 yds?

  20. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I think the no huddle should be mixed in on drives. It’s a great tool to catch teams with too many men on the field etc. create some free plays. It would be awesome to catch the defense on their heels with the running game too.

  21. Frank Pillow Says:

Todd has Schiano’s delusions of grandeur, Lovie’s aloofness, and Dirk’s inability to legitimately self assess….with a pinch of Tony’s dogged determination to just do what we do, no matter what. I mean, the entire situation, from Bruce leaving to the FA$, etc., was about luring 12 back. How was we call this anything other than a bait/switch. Todd and Byron have neutered one of the best Os in football into something resembling Marcus Arroyo’s best effort. The real crime is they’ve done it with the GOAT at the helm.

  22. Bojim Says:

Bowles wants this to be his team. Fine. He should still be willing to use a few tactics from the Arians days. But he wont.

  23. Alanbucsfan Says:

As great as Brady is, he can’t scramble or run.
Eagles, Cowboys, Chiefs, Bengals, Bills, Dolphins all have QB’s that can run and that adds another dimension to their offenses that Bucs don’t have.
As a result, Bucs offensive execution has less margin for error.
So, Bowles will have to balance the hurry up with keeping his D fresh.

  24. JD Says:

    1. When Brady runs “hurry up”, the coaches are removed from the equation which explains the success!

    2. Who cares if special teams and defense gets tired if “hurry up allows us to score a TD almost every time we go down the field.

    3. If our defense gets tired, imagine what it does to our opponent’s defense when they can’t substitute against us while we are in “hurry up”

    4. Mr. Bowles, do you not realize who you have at QB? This guy is virtually unstoppable at “hurry up” when given a receiver like Godwin and an average back and tight end who can just catch the ball.

  25. Jeff Says:

    Clueless Todd needs to GO!

  26. SB~LV Says:

    He ain’t changing…. Period!

  27. rrsrq Says:

has to be a balance, because it could wear the defense out, if Bucs cannot sustain that kind of drive

  28. Bosch Says:

Special teams will get worn out? They are on the field for one play! Seriously! An NFL head coach that is actually this stupid. Bowels needs to be flushed.

  29. Tiny Dungy Says:

The Brady Bunch becomes The Biggest Loser with Todd Bowels at the helm.

(cue the “Nacho and Lefty” music with appologies to Willie Nelson)

If you really want to go ground and pound then pull Brady for a more mobile QB and put Vita Vea at FB, Ko Keift and Luke Goedeke (maybe he has easier transition from tackle to TE) as blocking TE’s and give it a try.

  30. HC Grover Says:

Bowlezo he is here there and everywhere.

  31. HC Grover Says:

    No huddle=no coach meddling.

  32. Tampabaybucfan Says:

What wears the defense & ST out is 3 & outs

  33. SufferingSince76 Says:

They don’t have to run the hurry up offense that much. They just need to let Brady call all of the plays. Leftnut has the imagination of a rock. Since that’s not going to happen, we’re doomed.

  34. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

Fortune favors the bold. Being too careful is just as bad as being to reckless. His risk assessment skills are bringing this team down.

  35. NEfan Says:

Doesn’t it wear the opponents D down as well? Catch 22. But wearing down the ST’s would be my biggest concern. (Sarcasm)

  36. Joe Says:

Special teams will get worn out?

    Exactly!

  37. Jerseybuc Says:

Head coach is the problem he’s the head man the shot caller. This is why our O sucks! He wants to run run run play defense this team is not built for thst. Do what your good at radio!
    Come on man

  38. Greg jarvis Says:

Hell with bowles. Shii oh ups have kept arians. He’s gonna be jobless if he keeps this crap up

  39. SB~LV Says:

Pretty lame locker room victory speech

  40. BrianBucs Says:

Bowles is who he is and he’s not ever going to change.
Tom Brady won that game in spite of and despite Todd Bowles

  41. Jack Sparrow Says:

SOme Head coaches are built just to be a coordinator and this dude proves it. And some coordinator are built just to be a waterboy and that is Lefty.

  42. Tyler904 Says:

Is a hurry up more taxing for D or special teams than going 3 and out every possession???

  43. JayBuc Says:

In other words: We will continue to run it up the gut on first down to start the series….

  44. Bobby M. Says:

Bowles has a vested interest in having his defense hold up….at worst he can still make a case for hiring him as a DC. If he flames out and his defense is getting gashed, he’s got no pitch to make to his next employer. He’s not a good HC….this isn’t one randomly underperforming season, it’s a continuation of what he did with the Jets except with the Jets he could say he never had a QB, now he’s lost that excuse. He’s got Brady with multiple weapons yet he’s dinking and dunking his way to 6-6 in a pathetic division.

  45. D-Rok Says:

It’s true that if hurry-up only yields say 1 first down, and the D comes right back on field after a 2-min drive, that the D will be gassed later in game. That’s obvious.

But on hurry-up drives this year, how MANY short drives have we had. See Rams game. See Saints game.

My point is we are SO much more efficient in hurry-up and I’m sure the chances of 3-and-outs is much slimmer.

Maybe a no-huddle offense is the answer here? Hurry back, line-up, call a play, milk the play-clock down to around 5, snap. Rinse, repeat. Keeps substitutions off the field, for both teams.

Just thinking aloud, and the idea of 2-4 hurry-up drives, mixed with 2-4 no-huddles, mixed with regular ole BL-special drives, sure seems like a non-conservative approach, and lets Brady do GOAT things.

  46. SB~LV Says:

Let Brady call his own plays

    That’s for sure.
    Does he ever?

  50. Couch Fan Says:

Bowles has already said, in not so many words earlier this season, that he’s not open to changing anything. He’s a stubborn, cowardly coach and he’ll never be a winning HC in this league.

  51. Joseph C Simmons Says:

In Bowles defense, if Brady had hit ANY of those long balls in the first three quarters, the possession-offense-with-the-occasional-deep-throw would’ve worked perfectly and the offense would’ve resembled last year’s offense.

I’m not sure the reason–though I have my suspicions–but Brady has not accurately thrown the deep ball all year. I’m guessing it’s a lack of faith in the offensive line. But if you’re looking for the real reason we could score so much last year and not so much this year, it’s not the “hurry up”, it’s that we can’t hit a damn deep throw.

  52. PewterStiffArm Says:

Joe, if the Bucs just had a better Offensive scheme to put our players in positions to take advantage of the defense we wouldn’t have to worry about this. How many weeks in a row have you had this conversation on the Ira Kaufman podcast. I get frustrated because we are wasting all of this talent by not putting our players in the right positions. As an Offensive coordinator calling plays in any application should be a thought process. A process of out smarting the anticipated defense. I was falling asleep during the Saints game and there was a part of me that wanted them to loose. I thought that maybe with another winnable game lost at home that the ownership group would grow a pair and fire Leftstiff. If we keep on with this crappy run left BS after this game the losses will catch up to us. I live in North Carolina and without JoeBucsFan I would be pulling my hairs out of my head. You guys let me vent and at the same time give me and many, many other readers something to look forward to each and every day. Keep on cranking it out Joe, most appreciated.

  53. Bucschamp Says:

    hes excited about punting

  54. HC Grover Says:

Most teams have a Head Coach a Defense Coach and an Offense Coach. Why don’t the Bucs?

  55. Duane Says:

They should at least consider going to the no huddle when they approach the red zone. Too many initial drives grind to a halt just inside the 10 this season. Use it earlier in the game to get the lead. 4 extra pts from that first drive could have made a big difference in the wins and losses.

  56. blitzed727 Says:

In no way am I sympathizer of this coaching staff but I did observe some change in offensive gameplan last week that consisted of more designed shots down the field. That is more then i remember seeing all year and had we connected with them i think we would be feeling differently. With that being said it would be extremely foolish if Leftwich did not incorporate a no huddle more frequently given how effective we are in that area.

  57. Thunder Says:

Alanbucsfan, ALL the QBs for the teams you mention cannot read defenses like Brady. None of them . A lot of times they HAVE to run because they missed something in their reads. Brady processes things far quicker than any QB, especially in pressure moments. He doesn’t need to run a 4.5 40

  58. JayBuc Says:

Not concerned about tiring the Defense. that is a BS excuse!! You can tire your defense with continual 3 and outs with runs up the gut!

You can run hurry up offense and still take your time. Change play at the line of scrimmage once or twice. You still prevent the Defense from making Substitutions. You can pull an Aaron Rodgers and catch them with 12 or more on the field if they try to change personal.

  59. Goatfarmer Says:

    Dead coach jabbering.

  60. ViSyl Says:

Please get Sean Payton or Harbaugh in Tampa right now!

  61. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I agree with the comments above that say they saw a change in game plan last week with more deep shots. I saw it too and Brady missed. I think the timing is still off. I wonder if they’ve been practicing the deeper routes. If they’ll stay w it , I think a couple more weeks the timing will be back. That will open everything up.

  62. Defense Rules Says:

Lord C … ‘The team is averaging less time of possession than we did last year. So they are going to be even more gassed I guess’.

I think TOP is a big factor that most overlook in evaluating this year’s Bucs (and Bowles). Our TOP this year is averaging 28:48 over our 12 games (putting us at a #28 ranking). Our run-pass ratio is sitting at 33.0% . Our TOP in 2021 averaged 30:11 over our 17 games (putting us at a #18 ranking). Our run-pass ratio was slightly higher at 33.8% under BA (that was also the lowest in the league).

Under Arians we passed at an average of 43 times per game, and ran it an average of 24 times per game. This year with Bowles in charge, we’ve passed it an average of 43.8 times per game, and run it an average of 23.7 times per game. For all practical purposes, the numbers are identical (67 – 67.5 plays per game in both years). Based on those numbers alone, we’re running it less thus our TOP should be HIGHER (highest TOP this year are all running teams, which we’re obviously not).

Brady is throwing at a 66.2% completion rate this year, versus a 67.3% last year (not all that significant IMO). Based on that, the clock would stop more often and the TOP would be a little LOWER, which it is.

WHY our TOP is almost 1:30 LESS this year though befuddles me (it SHOULD be almost the same as last year). Only thing I can think of is that we’re using the sidelines more (and thus stopping the clock) more than we did in 2021. Or possibly we’re using more time-outs to stop the clock. Or we’re getting more penalties (which also stop the clock obviously).

BTW, on looking up a couple of those stats, found a couple others that are intriguing. Bucs rank #32 in rushing, but we’re the only team with under 1,000 yards at this point in the season (only 879 to be exact). That’s REALLY bad.

o Our Yards Per Carry is the lowest, by far, at 3.3 YPC.
o We’ve scored the fewest TDs rushing with only 4, ranking us #32 just behind Lovie’s Texans who have 5 TDs rushing.
o Bucs have only TWO runs of 20-Plus yards, putting us in next to last place (the sad Broncos have only 1).
o Most bizarre though, we rank #30 in the NFL in terms of running on 1st down (whodathunkit) at only 20.2% (Broncos & Titans actually run at a slightly lower percentage on 1st downs than we do). I’ll bet that if you polled all JBFers, the majority would have us up in the Top-5 in terms of running on 1st down. I still think our drastic drop in productivity mostly comes down to our OLine & the changes we’ve undergone this year. And oh ya, the fact that BL hasn’t been able to adapt our offense to those changes.

  63. Alanbucsfan Says:

    Thunder-
Agree, but mistakes in execution have bigger consequences when your QB can’t use his legs to bail out a play.

  64. Defense Rules Says:

JerseyBuc … ‘Head coach is the problem he’s the head man the shot caller. This is why our O sucks! He wants to run run run play defense’.

JayBuc … ‘In other words: We will continue to run it up the gut on first down to start the series’.

Bucs run LESS each game than all other teams in the league, except for the Texans (and they average 4.1 YPC versus our measly 3.3 YPC). Bucs have the FEWEST rushes on 1st down of any team in the NFL. We also run LESS on 1st downs as a percentage of our plays than all but 2 other teams in the league, the Broncos & the Titans.

So Jersey Buc, Bowles directing this team to ‘run run run’ is not why ‘our O sucks’. I personally doubt that he has any significant input into our offensive game plans each week. This is BL’s show now, and it’s a ‘rinse and repeat’ act. After the 1st scripted series, he’s guessing instead of adjusting.

  65. SlyPirate Says:

IT WOULD BURN OUT THE DEFENSE AND SPECIAL TEAMS?

He’s assuming they would fail in executing. WOW!

  66. mark2001 Says:

Like Shannon Sharpe said, running that offense is exhausting if run too often. I’d add that It is exhausting to the defense mostly, that doesn’t get a chance to get off the field very much. And if you can’t convert third downs relatively consistently, your D can be out of gas by the end of the third quarter.

  67. CChead Says:

Blowes is not going to change. His perfect game is to score 17 points and have the defense allow 10. Clueless Todd has got his hands in the offense and its why they suck.

  68. CChead Says:

DR…the reason we rank #30 on 1st down runs is because we are always fall behind on the scoreboard and have to throw to get back in the game.

  69. doolnutts Says:

This is the problem with this years bucs. Its not that Bowles is even a bad coach its that he has bad philosophy. He doesn’t play to win and score points he plays not too lose. I cannot stand the possession style of ball he wants us to run. It’s what Love Smith ran in Chicago it might get you some wins but it def will get you losses.

  70. Architek Says:

He’s not the answer, I’m disappointed to say but this philosophy is a coaching not to lose. The team adopts that mentality as well. He going to conserve his way right out of his last job opportunity as a HC.

  71. gotbbucs Says:

How about we score some points before we worry about guys getting tired.

Also, the tempo isn’t the underlying reason why the hurry up offense has been working. It’s the formations that we’re running out of the hurry up. All of our hurry up snaps are out of a spread. There’s room to operate. Way too many of our normal formations have every single player inside the numbers. It condenses the field too much.

  72. Defense Rules Says:

gotbbucs … Awesome observation. I hadn’t been looking for that but will from now on. And yes, it could explain a LOT.

  73. NCalBucsfan Says:

There are lots of ways and situations to employ the hurry up. I’d love to see the hurry up on the first drive of the game or the half and then do it as a switch up during the middle of the game. This at least forces the defense to hurry up rotations and keep their schemes simple.
You can run hurry up after your opponent is held to a three and out or even one first down for example, as it now puts the pressure back on the opponents defense and has them right back on the field in a simple scheme with limited ability to substitute.

  74. Thisisouryear!! Says:

DR- I think your passing and run numbers are skewed. It might be more accurate if you use the first half numbers from this year against the first half numbers from last year. This year we are playing from behind much more than we ever did last season. I think and would guess our first half numbers are quite different than our second half.

  75. Thisisouryear!! Says:

And the reason the TOP is so much different is because for 3 quarters per game we are 3 and out compared to previous years.

  76. captivajim Says:

bowleszo put it out there .. now we all know HIS game plan… he’s stubborn ,as he was with jets , & he will Not change ..

we should use the hurry-up at start of game ,end of half , start of 3rd qtr and as needed in 4th qtr
the Glazers will have a choice after season ends ..

  77. Jmarkbuc Says:

Bowles would be amazed at how energizing playing with a two TD lead can be.

  78. LastDance Says:

Fook this guy! His 2 worst fears in order: Scoring too many points and a tired Special Teams unit.

  79. Defense Rules Says:

Thisisouryear!! … ‘I think your passing and run numbers are skewed. It might be more accurate if you use the first half numbers from this year against the first half numbers from last year.’

I’m not THAT ambitious to start breaking things out by quarter or by halfs, so yes they are game numbers. Are we consistent in every quarter? Lord no. Are we consistent from game to game? Heavens no. Big picture look at quarters though shows this:

o In 3 wins, Bucs were ahead all game (or tied in 1st qtr).
o In 3 wins, it took a 4th qtr comeback to win (we were losing or tied at end of 3 qtrs).
o In 4 losses, we were never ahead all game.
o In 1 loss, we were ahead at halftime, but fell behind in 3rd qtr and subsequently lost.
o In 1 loss, we were ahead in the 4th qtr, but lost in TO.

Just goes to show that this has been a very haphazard year. We could just as easily be 3-9 as we could be probably 9-3. Personally I think 6-6 is just about right for the way we’ve been playing. Still, with 5 games to go, it’s not too late to get our act together and finish on a positive note.

  80. JayBuc Says:

Defense Rules Says: ….’Bucs run LESS each game than all other teams in the league, except for the Texans’

Yes, Bucs run less for two reasons: 1. most games they haven’t been able to run (see your 3.3 YPC) 2. When you fall behind, you must pass and play catch up.

Point is BL is very predictable in play calling and YES early in the game we see too many runs on first down.

  81. NEfan Says:

gotbucs, great post, I never thought about the formations.

Alan, please stop with the running QB thing. Brady has 7 SB’s and 10 appearances and throughout his career his 10yd dash equates to most players 40yd dash. He didn’t scramble in the last 5 mins of the last game or last season or the season before.

    Garapolo broken ankle from scrambling.

    Jackson, sprained knee from scrambling.

Fields got hurt from scrambling as did Murray.

Lose Brady, lose the season. Running QB’s don’t last.

  82. Irishmist Says:

Next week, we’re going to be facing a red hot Nick Bosa against our patchwork OL. A smart OC would immediately go into the hurry up when he gets subbed out to keep him off the field as much as possible and give Brady time to operate. Unfortunately we don’t have a smart OC.

  83. Goatfarmer Says:

Of course Toad’s Bowels doesn’t want to admit he’s been wrong.

    Brian Flores or Eric Bienemy.
