Big Scoring Plays Have Just About Vanished

December 5th, 2022

Bucs OC Bryon Leftwich.

Want more proof the Bucs offense is more Mike Glennon than Jameis Winston? Sharp Football Analysis has ugly facts.

(Yes, it is galling to Joe to suggest the offense led by Tom Brady is more like Glennon than Jameis. Joe wants to barf — but the facts are the ugly facts. And no, Brady is not the problem here.)

Rich Hribar has statistical breakdowns on the Bucs and when it comes to the offense, it ain’t pretty.

Here’s the first:

The Buccaneers’ average length of touchdown is just 7.1 yards, ahead of only the Steelers (5.4 yards).

Joe doesn’t know what’s more surprising, the Bucs being this bad or the Steelers. It’s not like the Steelers are void of talent, but the city of Pittsburgh is enraged that Matt Canada is still the offensive coordinator. Joe doesn’t blame them, but at least Canada can say he’s working with a rookie and a colossal bust for quarterbacks.

The Bucs? They’ve got Brady and entering the weekend, Brady was leading the NFC in passing.

Shame on you, failing Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich!

And here is another nugget from Hribar:

Tampa Bay is last in the league in rate of carries to gain five or more yards (30.0%) and rate to gain 10 or more yards (8.6%).

Joe can barely type about the run game any longer. Joe is convinced the run game will not work until Leftwich is gone.

The fact Leftwich is still here demonstrates the lip service the Bucs give to accountability.

Big scoring plays are down across the league. Offensive production as a whole is down across the league. Defenses are playing more two high shell daring teams to run, and we suck in the run game! Also, the big difference is the regressive play of the OL compared to last year. I know people rant about missing Jensen. Marpet’s absence is more devastating. Not only was he a monster, he covered up a lot of Donnie’s mistakes. As you see, Donnie is struggling this season. Bucs need to do more max protect in order to get more deep shots.

I see a lot of similarities with Herbert’s season and Brady’s. Herbert has been been under siege all season and the play calling has been pitiful. Even with his mobility, it’s been a mess. They’ve turned Herbert into a check down king! The man has one of the strongest in the league. There’s no doubt the Chargers should make a run for Sean Payton. It starts in the trenches and we’re failing miserably, especially in the run game.

  2. Defense Rules Says:

Interesting fantasy link Joe. Particularly found this meaningful:

‘In six games against the Saints since joining the Bucs, Brady has completed 58.9% of his passes for 6.2 yards per pass attempt. He has nine touchdowns and eight interceptions in those games, throwing for more than 239 yards in just one of those games.

The Saints are also allowing 6.2 yards per pass attempt since Week 7 (second in the NFL) with just five touchdown passes over those six games.’

Tells me that the Saints have Brady’s number. Also tells me that the Saints’ defense has been playing well in their last 5 games (since Week 7). Yet they’re 2-3 in those games, because their offense has been as abysmal as the Bucs offense. Me thinks our best chance to beat them is to find a way to get our running game going. Forcing a couple of turnovers wouldn’t hurt either.

  3. Panhandle Buc Says:

And all of this with the GOAT, Evans, Godwin, and Julio. SMDH!!!!! I hope the Glazers are paying attention!!!

  4. Four Tuddy Says:

Lmao and in EVERY article this site puts, and NO it’s not the one throwing the ball, it’s the big bad Leftwich. Newsflash, Leftwich is not throwing the rock. If this was any other QB, you know for a fact you wouldn’t do this. Y’all killed every other Bucs QB in history when they went downhill. I can’t wait for Leftwich to be gone to see who y’all blame next. The Gatorade guy? Leftwich was here with Brady these last two years… playing football all my life, I know that when things went wrong It was more on lack of execution and chemistry with my teammates. It’s basics. I have the same love for Brady as everyone else but this is just out of hand.

  5. Bucs Says:

Brady never had any issues with the Saints when he played for the Patriots. He was 4-1. Methinks it’s a Bucs problem. Awful scheming. That doesn’t play to his strengths. He beat NO in their own house throwing to the likes of Austin Collie and Kendrall Thompkins

  6. BucFanForever Says:

    Scoring has just about vanished.

  7. DG060 Says:

Just another damning indictment of BL. He needs to be relieved of his duties 2 months ago.

  8. SufferingSince76 Says:

And Jason Licht continues to be a ghost while all of this is going on. He bungled it this year. I’ve lost a good bit of respect for Mr. Licht due to his inaction.

  9. Oneilbuc Says:

Four Tuddy . I agree with you bro but according to these people on this site you must hate Brady because you told the truth about what you see on field. If this is any other quarterback he would be the only problem with the offense. They never gave BL credit the pass 2 years and now he gets all the blame because Brady is playing bad . It ain’t BL fault because Brady throwing balls in the dirt or he’s 45 and can’t throw it down field that much anymore to me I get it his time has came and gone and they still begging him to come back and play another year lol 🤣🤣 who’s fault will it be next year if he plays next year. Who’s going to be the new scapegoat will be the question ❓❓❓

  10. ViSyl Says:

No risk no biscuit vanished completely. It’s easy to play defense against a team that you know to be afraid.

  11. BucsFanSince76 Says:

Lack of run game is a product of well below average Oline-this is squarely on Jason Licht. Bucs don’t make playoffs-FIRE THEM ALL and hire Harbaugh.

  12. Cobraboy Says:

    I’m confuzzled.

Exactly what is this “scoring” to which you refer?

I am unfamiliar with the concept.

  13. BucsfanFred Says:

Look, the whole damn team plays in a funk.
The defence plays well, enough to win most of the time, but really … It’s just well enough to lose
    The offence … Mostly sucks.
Even Brady is playing just well enough to lose
I put that on the coaching.
Not calling timeout in Cleveland was simply unforgivable
I will always remember that, not that it was the only unforgettable coaching bucup.
There’s a big difference between unforgettable and unforgivable.

  14. SB~LV Says:

  15. Kentucky Buc Says:

Big plays come off play action for the most part. 1st down or 2nd and short. Bucs #RUNFORNONE in both those scenarios most of the time. Even the Brady haters know that anyone can predict the play calling at 80% accuracy. I do it every week. The scheming could be a lot better also but just a switch up on when the plays are called would make a big difference. Not likely to happen since we are this far in the season and it hasn’t happened yet. Likely to see the same ole same ole. The last game should’ve clued some people in that were on the fence. These coaches are way over their heads.

  16. Alanbucsfan Says:

Bucs don’t have a big scoring play threat from the TE position- and that makes it difficult for Evans and Godwin.
Unless Bucs develop and target Otton and Kieft more, that will not change because Brate’s better days are in the past.

  17. Jack Sparrow Says:

if running game is not working, yeah, blame Brady and not the OC and HC… if the O-line is not in synch, yeah blame brady and not Lefty and Bowles….. ridiculous.

  18. NEfan Says:

Oneiltobrady, your usual copy & paste post. Four Turdy@ Brady had NO problem going toe to toe with the Saint pre Bucs so that tells me it’s coaching. How come NO ONE is mentioning Bowles? Is it because he crafted a game plan to help win a SB against a injured mobile QB with the equivalent Oline to Bucs today, not to mention a Reids son assistant coach leaving practice decides to drink and drive leading to slamming in to a family in a mini van killing a passenger during SB week? The man has taken a high flying offense and neutered it to a ultra conservative one. If you don’t believe this then you must believe BL orchestrated the O the last three seasons not BA. You can’t have it both ways. Don’t get me wrong BL’s predictable play calling and lack of adjustments makes me gag up vomit.

  19. Kentucky Buc Says:

I’ve noticed it also. Bowles is back to getting a pass. He showed everyone who he was last game. If you didn’t already know.

  20. JD Says:

@four tuddy @oneilsucks… You guys are right -we shoul’ve never gotton the goat! Obviously we would be better off without him! ┌∩┐

  21. Ed Says:

Otton has flashed all season and still few plays or targets.

Passing schemes are old and moldy. New coordinator would bring in some splash.
NFL defenses are good at stopping teams that telegraph their plays. The Bucs are one of the best teams in the league at running plays that the entire TV audience can predict, you don’t think good defensive coordinators know how to play for this.

Without a premier offensive line, without speed at WR and without a running game, this offense can only excel if the plays are scripted to keep defenses off balance and if there are more downfield plays. Too many WR screens and not enough emphasis on getting the ball to Evans and Otton.

I see Brate as a waste on passing downs, his lack of speed is a liability and his body is worn out by NFL tight end standards. Otton and Kleif should be on the field. Its up to the coaching staff to get these rookies into the offense. All they do is catch whatever is thrown to them.

  22. Defense Rules Says:

Kentucky Buc … ‘Big plays come off play action for the most part’.

I hadn’t thought of that because most of our big plays in 2020 & 2021 seemed to have come off of the deep bombs (maybe not, but that’s the impression that I had). Our running attack was never too much of a threat to break one & take it to the house. But this year seems to be different because our deep threat has petered out for the most part.

Looks to me like what we’ve been missing is the big plays. Watching a couple games yesterday (Chiefs & Bengals game especially) it became painfully obvious that our ‘weapons’ aren’t making the big plays this year. For example, yesterday Kelce & Pacheco both showed up big-time when big plays were needed to keep drives alive, as did Perine & Chase for the Bengals. I haven’t seen that same consistent big-play execution with this year’s Bucs’ team. With the game on the line, you need your big guys on offense to step up & keep drives alive. Same with defense though; you need the big guys on defense to step up & shut them down. For some reason we don’t seem to be getting that consistently.

  23. Rand Says:

    Thank you Atlanta (▀̿̿Ĺ̯̿▀̿ ̿)

  24. Duane Says:

This has been mentioned all season long. Brady is getting rid of the ball faster. I do not think he is comfortable with holding onto the ball to let the play develop, for whatever reason. I think its a pipe/Bromosa dream to expect different results next year with the same roster and different coaching staff. If we got receivers that cannot get open, why are we paying them and keeping around? If these guys play with low energy and lose games they should win, why expect them to figure it out next season? Not a big fan of Bowles as a HC, but I do appreciate that he has the defense dialed in to not give up 28 a game.

  25. NEfan Says:

DR, true but when your HC handcuffs a QB that is 218-0 leading by 7 or more(now 218-1) or fails to call a TO eliminating any chance of a last drive win, (by the way Brady is the best at it, he’s done it 55 times prior, one 2 games ago). I’m not even getting into the int excuse. Not sure how you defend that? FYI, the 4th & 2 on the 37 delay of game was NOT on Brady, that’s called trying to draw the D offsides, the cowards way out.

  26. Kentucky Buc Says:

DR. That was true when you could trot out Evans Godwin Gronk and AB at the same time. Somebody was always 1 on 1. No longer have that luxury.

  27. Kentucky Buc Says:

Your HC showed you who he was last game. If you can’t see it after that I can’t help you. Nobody can.

  28. Joe Says:

Lmao and in EVERY article this site puts, and NO it’s not the one throwing the ball.

Only an out-and-out hater would blame Brady. If Brady had retired this spring, and Joe told you whoever the new QB is, would be leading the conference in passing in December, you’d be happy as hell with that.

  29. NEfan Says:

    Amen Joe!!!

  30. DG060 Says:

I would just like to congratulate Coach Bowles on the fact that he’s the ONLY coach to have ever lost a game with TB12 (218-1) when leading by 7 in the 4th.
Is that the most GLARING proof of this bungling fool disguised as an NFL head coach? And u wonder why some of us have given up on this season.
We can’t win with Bowles and BL.

  31. Jeff Says:

    Clueless Todd refuses to change.

  32. ClwJB Says:

This is the type of game we lose – backup to the backup QB, strong D line, under the lights at home

I am dreaming of an offensive awakening but past behavior predicts we play well for 3 of the 4 quarters, but 1 of the 4 we come unglued

Just enough to lose by 2, with Brady watching Dalton take 3 knees to close it out

God help me, I want to be wrong

  33. Beej Says:

If Brady’s at fault here there ought to be a lot of all-22 film showing him picking the wrong receiver etc

  34. Deeez NATZ Says:

I really hope Jason Licht Fires toilet bowl or at the least puts him back where he belongs on defense…BL should go be the water boy on a different team.Hes a crappy q.b and he’s even a crappier coach (if that is even possible)

  35. HC Grover Says:

    Put Johnson in at TE.

  36. ChiBuc Says:

@NE, I agree that one trick pony Bowles and no adjustment Lefty are the problems, but “Brady had NO problem going toe to toe with the Saint pre Bucs so that tells me it’s coaching” is a really fallacious argument. Was Brady 45 then? Was he retired, unretired, handed a qtr billion by fox, caught with his hand in the Dolphins cookie jar on a yacht, miss camp for vacation, bail on his team to dance at another owners wedding? Was he going through a sloppy separation and mid season divorce? Did he look sallow and depressed? Or is the only factor in this slide in offense his OC that he has been with through winning and losing while in Tampa?

Don’t let your lack of ability to see anything beyond you love of Tommy twist my words. I have been calling for BL’s head long before this season. I do not think this mess is all Tommy’s fault, but when will this man ever be accountable? He is the goat, the last person to call out a play, the first person to touch the ball every down, and the face of the franchise…yet, poor Tommy is a hapless victim in all of this? Try that logic on any other team…shoot, any other job in the world that goes to crap and the lead guy is not accountable. It makes no sense when you say it or when Joe says it.

  37. Beej Says:

The problem Brady has with the Saints is that they get pressure without blitzing

  38. D Says:

    Burn the Wich!

  39. Manny Says:

Is there a way for bowles and leftwich to vanish? Id rather any other assistant coach take over as head coach then see bowles at hc. Leftwich needs to be sent on that rocket beimg launched from florida tonigt and bowles is lucky. He can at least contribute as our dc. But for real call up arians, payton, obrien, harbaugh or bienemy as the next head coach.

  40. NEfan Says:

Chia Pet, NO he was not 45, he wasn’t always 43 & 44 throwing for over 5000 yards and winning a SB or leading in td’s. Try thinking before you post you’ll come off more intelligent.

  41. Tony Says:

Antonio Brown, Warren Sapp, Keyshawn Johnson, Johnny Manziel, Urban Meyer, Colin Kaepernick & Ray Rice on the coaching staff next year.😀
