Soft Joe?
November 29th, 2022Bucs edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka was 6-5, 262 pounds at the 2021 NFL Scouting Combine and he clearly added man weight entering this season, his sophomore campaign.
Tryon-Shoyinka is a beast of an athlete, but is he a little soft?
Joe is starting to think so. He’s not good against the run and his power doesn’t show up much in pass rush.
More important, head coach Todd Bowles thinks the Bucs’ other top edge rushers are more physical.
Bowles talked on the Buccaneers Radio Network about stopping the Browns’ running game Sunday and what he got from his outside linebackers.
“We were trying to make sure we had gang tackling and wrap up [Nick Chubb],” Bowles said. “Obviously, he broke a few. But for the most part in the interior they played tough. I thought we were a little soft out on the edges at times and we let him out or we misfit some things. But, you know, 28 carries for 116 [yards], that’s not a great average. But I thought we held him out just enough to get things done.”
Hmmm, “soft out on the edges,” Coach?
“I think Carl [Nassib] and [Anthony] Nelson brought a very physical aspect to the game [Sunday],” Bowles said. “I think Joe brings a very athletic aspect to the game for us when we are running stunts and games. I thought he showed up and flashed some. But Carl was very physical and Nelson was very physical.”
Joe hopes Tryon-Shoyinka can finish strong. He’s played 73 percent of the defensive snaps this season and hasn’t developed yet into a dangerous player.
Hopefully he turns the corner. The Bucs desperately need a Shaq Barrett-like presence if they are going to make noise in the playoffs.

Lol đ Todd’s delusional at this point. Not a great avg huh. He sliced yall up when it mattered you baboon
November 29th, 2022 at 7:34 pm
GreatâŚ.athletic but not physicalâŚ.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:40 pm
True, JTS plays soft. He’s a finesse player with plus athleticism. He needs more strength to “turn the corner”. Both figuratively and in reality.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:40 pm
Joe has shown a lot of speed and athletic ability but hasn’t shown any aggression, meanness or violence in his game at this point.
Bucs really miss Shaq
November 29th, 2022 at 7:44 pm
Tryon is not a problem for any offense. Easily taken out of the play. Soft.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:45 pm
JTS over his head, he’s not there yet.
November 29th, 2022 at 7:49 pm
JTS has NO power. He very rarely, if ever, sets the edge. He’s got great pursuit speed for a guy his size, and his role should be a spy on mobile QB’s. He should be inactive for physical, run-first teams. He just isn’t strong enough. Will that change next year after he does some jerks and cleans? Maybe, but this is THIS year, not next year.
November 29th, 2022 at 8:11 pm
What playoffs?
November 29th, 2022 at 8:13 pm
“Heâs not good against the run and his power doesnât show up much in pass rush.” Correct. Quick “athletic” step wasted. Offensive linemen routinely drive him wide off the play. Then he runs in afterwards. No edge setting. He was supposed to have bulked up and powered up this past offseason. I don’t see improvement to either the physical aspect nor technically.
In his current mode, he is not a starting caliber player. He is no better than a rotational piece to be used purely as a backup situational pass rusher….if on an otherwise great defense that is fully stocked with legit starting pass rushers.
Which Bucs are not. They’re relying on Carl and Nelson to provide it? Big fail.
November 29th, 2022 at 8:14 pm
He is always around the play. After it is over.
November 29th, 2022 at 8:25 pm
He looks more like a tight end
November 29th, 2022 at 8:33 pm
Pretty disappointing season for him and us fans expecting him to be the next guy. With Shaqs injury, I’d say edge is definitely a top priority now.
November 29th, 2022 at 8:37 pm
Whenever I have decided to isolate and watch JTS on any given play, I see the same thing. He reminds me of one of those fan driven, wailing, flailing, blow up men in front of used car lots. Every time! All I see is his arms high in the air and flapping in the breeze as he tries to dance around an offensive linemen. No force with this dude at all. No spin moves, he just hopes the OLineman is going to go elsewhere and let him dance by. He obviously hasn’t been taught any proper pass rushing techniques at the Pro level. Every time I now see one of those car lot wailing, flailing men, I think of JTS. Only difference is, JTS is not “fan” driven!
November 29th, 2022 at 8:43 pm
So who is playing better this year than last? Could it have something to do with coaching? I ask you.
November 29th, 2022 at 8:46 pm
WE MISS JPP
Joe cant play the run
November 29th, 2022 at 8:52 pm
Noah Spence Jr?
November 29th, 2022 at 9:01 pm
Joe was a bad pick and so was the guy we drafted last draft who I have barely seen doing anything at all. Bowles is also soft and a terrible HC.
We all know this team is better than this. The defense plays hard quite often but eventually wears down because our offense goes 3 and out way way too much.
Also I’m not happy with Licht since he had plenty of opportunities before the trade deadline to make a move. We obviously needed some damn spark and some roles filled but nope just sat at the status quo. Which explains a lot about the team and their performance. Status Quo aka average.
November 29th, 2022 at 9:17 pm
Clueless Todd strikes again.
November 29th, 2022 at 9:18 pm
Jets fans warned usâŚ.
November 29th, 2022 at 9:20 pm
Playoffs? You’re talking about playoffs?
Playoffs?
November 29th, 2022 at 9:26 pm
Tyronâs problem against the run is he doesnât hold the edge . When they run his way he is usually sucked in on a play action and forgets he is responsible for the edge. They just go wide around him. He is nothing but a speed rusher, not a full time player.
November 29th, 2022 at 9:26 pm
Off topic but John Breech at CBSsports.com today wrote a detailed article laying out perfectly how Bowles completely blew the game. He makes many great points and RIPS Bowles to shreds, which he deserves
November 29th, 2022 at 9:49 pm
Brian Flores or Eric Bienemy.
November 29th, 2022 at 9:59 pm
What is the Bucsâ history?
What are the odds that JTS is a bust?
November 29th, 2022 at 10:13 pm
You mean, âBryan Flores & Eric The Bienemyâ – AND. Hahahahah = âBowels & Olâ Leftyâ LoL. SAME.
November 29th, 2022 at 10:13 pm
Anthony Nelson should be the starter. Without a doubt. Pretty sad when Nassib is more physical than you.
November 29th, 2022 at 10:19 pm
Heâs not a âproblemâ for ANYBODY⌠No-Matter the âblocker,â ALL they have to do (and do do) is just basically, (blow on him) push him with their lil âpinkie-fingerâ & he literally, goes âFLYINGâ 10-yards out, AWAY from the play/QB⌠THEN, he comes FLYINâ back in, when the play is already, OVER!!!!
November 29th, 2022 at 10:24 pm
Avery shows MUCH more potential, and results, than JTS. If I’m wrong, DR or Joe will spew stats to dispute me, and if I’m wrong, I’m wrong. Try starting Avery over JTS and see what happens.
The D is not the problem, but man, we could use a few more spark plays/takeaways from the D – it might just jump-start the O.
November 29th, 2022 at 10:24 pm
Joe hopes Tryon-Shoyinka can finish strong.
Hope all you want-
Heâs the weakest part of the D when heâs on the field.
November 29th, 2022 at 10:29 pm
I’ve been saying that for a while now, without the word soft. JTS is a significant downgrade from JPP. He’s a one trick pony as a speed rusher and doesn’t have the judgment or chops against either the run or pass defense.
November 29th, 2022 at 10:31 pm
Hall should start at end ……. He can play D End
November 29th, 2022 at 10:50 pm
He sucks and is one of the main reasons this team is so mediocre to awful against the runâŚ. HE NEVER SETS THE EdGE OR CONTAIN. He might be one of the worst deâs we had at doing this the past idk 10 years. The next time he beats and offensive tackle with a move will be his first. If he canât get to the qb by running straight heâs not touching them. Why they donât start nassib and Nelson is only because heâs a first round pick⌠but man heâs terrible Iâd rather hall be out there in his spot he can play de right?
November 29th, 2022 at 10:52 pm
Nassib and Nelson should pretty clearly be ahead of JTS on the depth chart.
Sad to realize that unnmet potential is the theme of the team.
November 29th, 2022 at 11:05 pm
I think Bowles is soft. So there.
November 29th, 2022 at 11:19 pm
JTS is dead weight. Iâd rather take my chances with Genard Avery. Heâs very aggressive n explosive. I agree with everyoneâs comments regarding JTS, heâs soft n lacks strength. He seems to have no clue of whatâs going on. I perceive him to being a little boy trying to play with the big boys. As for Darden, will someone please explain to me his reason for being our pr/ kr. Parents just donât understand. BA brought back that swag to Buc land back in 2019 after replacing a passive n timid Koetter n Mike Smith who both allowed teams to make a mockery of us. Well, lo n behold, along came a spider name Todd Bowles who is going back down memory lane as heâs causing this team to regress. Please letâs bring in Sean Payton whoâll take this team to another level.
November 29th, 2022 at 11:21 pm
Jill Tryon-Sissyinka is not only soft she doesnât have a lick football instincts. She gets fooled by every misdirection play. The next time she sets the edge will be the first time she sets the edge. Sheâs softer than Noah Spence, Gaines Adams or Appalachia State Dexter Jackson.
November 29th, 2022 at 11:37 pm
He is tissue soft.
November 29th, 2022 at 11:39 pm
How about fair catch Darden. NFL is losing its toughness, this guy and Scotty Miller avoid contact. Darden fair catches with defenders 20 yards away.
November 29th, 2022 at 11:48 pm
âI think Carl [Nassib] and [Anthony] Nelson brought a very physical aspect to the game [Sunday],â Bowles said. âI think Joe brings a very athletic aspect to the game for us”
_______________
I am starting to notice that Todd, when analyzing literally anybody….. always says these same exact things. — Remember when Bruce, when analyzing people, could actually break them down, and give you completely different factors, strengths & weaknesses for any player on the team?
November 29th, 2022 at 11:49 pm
I miss that.
November 30th, 2022 at 4:25 am
Using his incredible football genius Bowles has created an entirely new football position. ‘Space Man’. Yes JTS has fit the position like a glove. Unlike the famous ‘Monster Man’ position ‘Space Man’ has the job of giving plenty of space between himself and the football.
“Space Man’ sets up away from the action. His job is to wave and flail his arms at high speed to either mystify the opposing QB or create a vacume that deflects the accuracy of the pass.
Thus Plan 9 From Outer Space has arrived.
November 30th, 2022 at 9:30 am
âSoft JoeââŚ. You sure your not talking about number 46?
November 30th, 2022 at 10:24 am
So much love for first-round-bust JTS and yet so much hate for second-round-hasn’t-played-yet Kyle Trask. Hmm. Race?
November 30th, 2022 at 10:35 am
Ufcguy32âŚbaboon? âŚJoe you need to check that!
November 30th, 2022 at 10:41 am
JTS âŚ..when your contract is up, remember the words that are coming out of their mouths!
November 30th, 2022 at 11:24 am
JTS is so soft. Watching him run around is almost comical. Gaines Adams 2.0.
Licht got cute again in the draft and picked JTS over Ojulari.
November 30th, 2022 at 12:24 pm
Finally I’ve reached the stage where I couldn’t care less what this organization does or doesn’t do now.
Make the playoffs. Miss the playoffs.
Who gives a F? That’s the attitude you must have when your a fan of the suckaneers.
November 30th, 2022 at 7:45 pm
Fair Weather Fans! Shaking my D head!
December 1st, 2022 at 8:18 am
âBut, you know, 28 carries for 116 [yards], thatâs not a great average.â
No, 4.1 yards per carry is not a great average but, itâs darn good! I wouldnât mind if that was my teamsâ yards-per-carry average!
December 1st, 2022 at 1:12 pm
JTS needs better coaching. Technique can be learned. Gap and contain discipline can be learned. Getting your lhands up, using your height to bat balls can be learned. All the great pass rushers have great technique. I always watch Von Miller. Not the biggest, strongest or fastest but has great technique, gets low to use his leverage, etc. And he’s a smart player.
I don’t think JTS is soft and I’m not jumping on that bandwagon. Players with his natural gifts need to be developed and that’s on the coaches. He’s a smart kid. Coach him up.
