The Nick Chubb Factor

November 26th, 2022

The Bucs’ key to victory tomorrow very much revolves around the running back drafted three picks before Ronald Jones in 2018.

That’s three-time Pro Bowl Browns running back Nick Chubb, who is off to a Hall of Fame start to his career. Chubb ranks No. 3 in NFL history among running backs at 5.3 yards per carry. That’s even better than Browns legend Jim Brown (5.2).

So stopping Chubb must be a major priority for the Bucs. When Chubb has less than 100 yards in a game this season, the Browns are 0-5. When Chubb gets less than 20 carries, the Browns are 0-7.

Feeling a theme?

It’s a big reason why Buccaneers savior linebacker Devin White is looking for 15 tackles on Sunday, though thinks Lavonte David might foil White’s plan.

Frankly, Joe doesn’t expect the Bucs to lock down Chubb in some sort of extraordinary way. However, Joe does expect the Bucs offense to provide a lead that grows into one that forces the Browns to throw and sideline the Chubb train.

  1. Joe in Michigan Says:

Devin White needs to stay in his gap and not worry about stats. See what happened to Ohio State in the second half vs. Michigan when a team doesn’t have gap integrity.

  2. Lamarcus Says:

First off, tackling is not Devin White friend and needs help on the fundamentals of tackling Like going back to elementary school of football on proper wrap up tackling. I swear I never seen Devin White make one

  3. Redeemer Says:

Chubb is a very good one cut runner. But he does his most damage with cutbacks. Only Henry has more 20+ yard runs over the last two years, on cutback runs. As Joe and Michigan said, maintaining gap control will be big. Once Chubb gets second level it’s over. Best way to neutralize him is to get a lead.

  4. The Beer Whisperer Says:

I challenge anyone here in the “peanut gallery” to try and run past Devin White, to see how he tackles.
    Just for Schlitz & Giggles.

I forgot that we were so close to having a shot at getting Chubb. It’s hindsight now but, then I thought Chubb was the best back out of that draft, after Saquan (I’m not sure that he isn’t better now?).
Remember the debates about Sony Michel or Chubb? When I watched them play, l saw Michel looking great running through holes. When I watched Chubb, I saw a tough dude fighting for yards after contact and thought that he would make a good NFL back! I’m here if you need a scout, Jason!

    Devin’s chance to shine …..

  7. Goatfarmer Says:

It’s heartening that the guy who thought signing Brady was stupid and doesn’t like criticism aimed at coaches and players has gap advice for Devin White.

  8. steele Says:

BucsBeBack, thank you for that reminder about that “debate”. Recall how so much of the scouting downgraded Chubb as a major injury risk, while upgrading Michel. Now look at them.

Patriots were lucky to get a small whiff of production out of Michel. If they had pushed for some deal involving Chubb instead, who knows. TB12 might have had himself more Lombardis….stuck around NE….

  9. Alanbucsfan Says:

The Browns formula for success in their 3 wins has been run the ball successfully, stop the run defensively and win the TO battle. If Bucs can’t run the ball vs Browns in the rain, this will be a tough game for Bucs. If Bucs do have success running the ball, Bucs should win handily.

  10. Redeemer Says:

capti, if the line can keep 300 pound guards out if his face, White should have a fine day. Don’t underestimate the browns O line though. It’s designed to get second level with the zone scheme. Hope Vea is a go, it they’ll just block Hicks out of every run play

latest weather forecast is rain turning to showers around 1:30pm ……But i suspect that field will be sloppy–especially at the far end where some clown drove a golf cart between the 10-40 yrd line ..

  12. Bring back the lawn chairs Says:

Without vea stuffing the middle, and on a sloppy field it’s likely tampa goes full on lawn chair defense in which case it will be a very long day for us buc fans today…. Just sayin.
