Mike Evans was dropping irony in a recent interview.
Evans hooked up with Pro Bowl edge rusher Von Miller on The Voncast and was asked to name his top-5 underrated receivers in the NFL. Evans quickly went to Washington Commandos receiver Terry McLaurin.
Joe was flabbergasted by Evans’ choice. McLaurin signed a three-year, $68 million-plus contract extension over the summer. That’s underrated? Damn.
Of course, McLaurin, who has never made a Pro Bowl, is having his third strong season in a row and is a total package kind of receiver, though he’s a little small but tough as anyone.
Joe typed this post up because at No. 2 on Evans’ underrated list is his $20 million-per-year teammate, Chris Godwin.
That made Joe remember that Evans, the greatest receiver in Tampa Bay history, is due just $14.5 million in 2023, which is the final year of his contract.
Joe expects Evans to sign a massive contract extension this offseason that could make him a Buccaneer for life and give the team the salary cap flexibility (with Evans’ help) it got during the course of Evans’ five-year, $82 million deal he signed in March of 2018.
While top salaries at cornerback and running back have dropped a bit over the years (Leonard Fournette is earning Doug Martin money) wide receiver money is skyrocketing.

He probably meant underrated in terms of being recognized for his talents and skills nationally versus big names in the NFL like OBJ joe……..

Absolutely Buc for Life. You only get a few of these franchise icons that should never play elsewhere. Lavonte is one. Evans is another. I have a feeling Winfield, if he avoids more concussions, will be in that category as well.

Every year we’ve got a few dummies saying to get rid of Evans.
Yet what happens every year if / when Evans goes down? The offense crumbles.

The offense did just fine when your backup is AB. Evan’s is a real team guy, here’s a question, if Brady goes will Evan’s follow? They have grown quite a bond.

Evans has been great for us but he’s a little fragile and that doesn’t improve with age.

Yeah the guy only had 2 of his 4 best seasons in his career the past 2 seasons, but some guy named doosh says he’s “a little fragile” and is getting old, so I’m sure we can easily replace all this production:
2021 – 1,035 yards 14 TDs
2020 – 1,006 yards 13 TDs
2019 – 1,157 yards 8 TDs
2018 – 1,524 yards 8 TDs
2017 – 1,001 yards 5 TDs
2016 – 1,321 yards 12 TDs
2015 – 1,206 yards 3 TDs
2014 – 1,051 yards 12 TDs
After all, Tampa Bay is known as a wide receiver factory, isn’t it?
(And those stats don’t even mention how he is ranked #1 for most receptions that convert for 1st down either.)

St Brown from Detroit is the most underrated player in football an absolute beast. Jacoby Myers from the Patriots is a low-key underrated player that would 100% help the Bucs next year., free agent

ME is the best to ever play for the Bucs. He is a future HOF er and stands with the all time NFL elite’s at his position.
I truly hope he remains a Buc for life.
The truth is, however, that if he demands the money he deserves on his next contract, we wont be able to pay him.
So far, he has been very team friendly on that. Hopefully he feels he can afford to continue to do so.

Mike Evans will end as a top 10 receiver of all times on the NFL if he continues playing well into his 30s…
I think he can continue doing the things he’s good at for a long thing.
Health is important and taking care of himself as he gets older.
I think he’s good for 6 more 1k seasons

You HAVE TO re-sign him so that you can trade him and hopefully, get max-value for as soon as they start relinquishing assets on the next rebuild… Which, will probably, begin before next seasons ‘trade-deadline,’ or following next season, at the latest. CAN’T Just ‘Let-Him’ WALK. Absolutely, KILLED-Us enough already, with Shaq… He now, basically, has NO-value, when we really could’ve gotten A LOT for him from a ‘contender’ desperate for a ‘pass-rusher’ next year, at the ‘deadline’ – SUCKS.

Those two, ME13 and CG14, are buds off the field, too. ME13 will be the first Offensive Bucs player voted into Canton. He deserves that honor and a bump in salary.

Godwin is NOT underrated by any means.
4 years straight of missing games.
No he is not underrated.
The greatest ability is your AVAIL-ability
And Godwins body has betrayed him ever since the end of BA’s first season 2019 when his body broke down and he missed the end of the season.
BA moved him to the slot and it turns out it was just a matter of time before Godwin was hurt and missed games.
NOT UNDERRATED, just stay on the field brother,and earn that contract

As great as Evans is, after thirty, skilled players that depend on speed lose a step. Not sure Evans will have a high value with this next contract unless it is a 1-2 years short contract.
