With Bucs sack king Shaq Barrett out for the year after blowing an Achilles in the loss to Baltimore, a lot of pressure is on a former first-round pick to make a name for himself.
And last week in Munich, Joe Tryon-Shoyinka did just that. The Bucs’ 2021 first-round pick sure seemed a lot more active than he had been in previous games.
Against the Seahawks, JTS had a sack, a tackle for loss and a quarterback hit. That’s one of his best games. Yesterday when Bucs defensive line coach Kacy Rodgers spoke at One Buc Palace, he was sure thankful that JTS showed up.
“I thought he stepped up when his number was called, you know?” Rodgers said. “We’ve been kind of waiting for Joe to take that next step because he has all the tools – speed, athleticism, power – so it was good to see him get off the stick pretty [well].
“And the thing is, if you look at the tape, [we] felt like he left a couple out there, so that was really good to see.”
The Bucs are going to need more play like that from JTS to be competitive. Joe doesn’t know if the Bucs gave him more responsibilities or different tasks, but he seemed like a changed player. At least for one week.
Consistent pressure from JTS would sure help pick up the slack left without Shaq.

Personally I’m amazed that our defense is doing as well as it is. And quite frankly I can’t figure out why. By all rights, this is a middle-of-the-pack defense instead of a Top-5 defense like we’re ranked after 10 games.
Bucs’ pass rush is woefully under-performing in comparison to our 2021 & 2020 defenses. However, we’re on-track to do better in 2 areas this year …
o Sacks: We’re on-track to get 54 sacks this year, an improvement from the 47 sacks we got in 2021 & 48 sacks we got in 2020.
o TFLs: We’re on-track to get 97 TFLs this year, an improvement from the 81 TFLs we got in 2021 & the 91 TFLs we got in 2020.
Can’t say the same for pass rush or takeaways though …
o QB Knockdowns: We’re on-track to get only 51 QBKDs this year, well below the 77 QBKDs we got in 2021 & the 68 QBKDs we got in 2020.
o QB Hurries: We’re on-track to get only 46 hurries this year, far below the 95 hurries we got in 2021 or even the 73 hurries we got in 2020.
o QB Pressures (sacks + hurries + knockdowns): We’re on-track to get 151 pressures this year, far below the 224 pressures we got in 2021 or the 193 pressures we got in 2020.
o Takeaways: We’re on-track to get only 17 takeaways this year, well below the 29 takeaways we got in 2021 or the 25 takeaways we got in 2020. What seems bizarre is that the Bucs thus far have only 10 takeaways in 10 games, and HALF of those (5) came in the Saints’ game.
So it looks like we’re not getting even close to the pass rush that we got in 2021 or 2020. A big part of that IMO had to do with losing Hicks early-on & having to adjust our defensive responsibilities to compensate. We in essence had little choice but to let our opponents bring the game to us instead of vice-versa. That changed somewhat in the Rams game & even more in the Seahawks game. Here’s hoping that it continues.

he HAS to perform well consistently – during the game, and in every game.
We HOPE that he is “getting” how to play the position!
But we need to see MUCH more from him.

Coach Rodgers said JTS has speed, athleticism, n power. I disagree because I’ve seen him demonstrate only one, which is speed. On his athleticism, he does not put to use his best effort to deflect n bat down balls. I’ve watched him have multiple opportunities to jump up in the air n use his long arms to deter the qb or bat the ball down. That’s a sign of effortless n poor coaching. As for his power, what power, he’s pushed around like a teddy bear. He play too passive. On the other hand,I’d take #59 Genard Avery over JTS any day. I love his motor, drive, n determination, he’s a true grit type player that should get the start over JTS.
I watched Lions rookie DE Adian Hutchinson n this kid plays with athleticism, power, speed, n alertness. Maybe Kacy Rodgers is confusing JTS with him.

Overall, he’s been a big disappointment. And I agree with Jason. Why aren’t we seeing more of Nelson and Nassib? Willing JTS to play better isn’t going to make it happen and keeping him in when he’s being pushed around isn’t, either.

Offense has to start putting up higher scores. Over 25 a game.

Not concerned about our defense…..we are healthy and our secondary is playing well…..but not getting picks….that is a product of our poor pass rush…..
It’s our offense that needs to step up…..we have our entire WR corps back and healthy….4 healthy RBs…..a healthy Brady and oline….

What worries me is his lack of power on the field. Speed is really his only weapon during a set. You need to be able drive your opponent back also. That’s a huge part of DL game.

He’s a bust all right. Just not in Canton
He’s from Washington State, uses two last names and sat out his senior season over the woo hoo flu. Always shows upon camera after the play is over.

He’s improving but has a ways to go until he can become someone that would keep offensive coordinator’s up at night. But, if JTS averaged a sack a week here on out I think we would all be ecstatic.

Not a liability and trending upward in comparison to Year 1, but I’ll say if sacks are your only barometer for OLB success in this scheme then you’re only looking at a portion of what the staff asks of our OLBs. Also, the willingness to move JTS around the front 7 has been carried over from his rookie year to this season even with the absence of JPP and that to me signifies the staff is attempting to use JTS as more than another body to throw at the pocket. Also, JTS played an avg of 68% of the teams total defensive snaps in the first 8 games, the last two games he’s been in on avg of 90% of the total defensive snaps.

I’m pretty sure I saw JTS bull-rush a guy in the Seattle game. Nothing came of it stats-wise, but I think it’s the first time I’ve seen JTS push ANYBODY back in a game.
Maybe he’s showing good power in practice, against players he knows very well, but the power isn’t showing in games. Perhaps JTS lacks confidence?
He does have potential, and maybe another offseason in the weight room will help him a lot. I think his real niche or calling is his speed chasing down mobile QB’s.

Once these teams get a good sampling of game tape on him. And they can game plan plays and mismatches directly at him.
We’ll see how he does. Im not expecting him to excel but I don’t think he’s a pushover. Right now he’s average I don’t expect that to change for the better as teams design plays to attack him.

You know Biff referring to him as a female sounds more like you are doing a whole lot of transference to me because guaranteed you stand next to him we all know who would be called the female of the two.
The young man is still thinking out there because they have him not just rushing the qb but also covering rbs and TEs. The effort is there and on some things he does fairly well. Guess too many people think he’s supposed to be Micah Parsons

He’s no Micah Parsons so what were you all expecting??? Rushing the qb isn’t the only thing they’ve had him doing so it takes time for it all to come together.
