Devin White Among Elites

November 21st, 2022

Rare company.

Here is something you don’t see often.

Last week against Seattle in Munich, when Devin White racked up his two sacks, he did something only one player in the history of the NFL has accomplished in his first four seasons.

White raised his career sack total to 20 and finished the game with 435 tackles in his first four seasons. Only one player through his first four seasons has had at least 20 sacks and 400 tackles. That guy is in the Pro Football Hall of Fame, Brian Urlacher.

Impressive company White has. And this is why Joe thinks the return of Akiem Hicks has been so important to White.

With Hicks clogging things up, White no longer has to tangle with 300-pound offensive linemen too often. With Hicks, White is able to roam free and wreak havoc.

    Hadn’t realized that. Impressive guy.

  2. Goatfarmer Says:

Very different types of players, obviously, very different positions. Very different people. Urlacher was mature beyond his years.

  3. Your Mom Says:

    wow that is awesome

Urlacher made even Lovie “get-you-the-#1-overall-pick” Smith look like a good coach.

  4. Daryl Green Says:

🛑 let’s see elite in Cleveland against Chubbs & Hunt 😮😮🤙🏾

    DO NOT COME OUT FLAT!!!!

  5. Tampabaybucfan Says:

    Glad DW45 is back!!!

  6. Show Me the TDs Says:

    Please be consistent.

  7. PSL Bob Says:

I think all the negative “loafing” publicity got to him, and he stepped up his game. Clearly having Hicks to keep o-lineman off him helps. Let’s just hope White keeps up the good play and Hicks stays healthy.

as much grief as the kid gets, thats an impressive start to his career. Its not easy to work in the shadows of 55 and lavonte david..

  9. JA Says:

If White could improve on his weakness-his ability, or sometimes lack thereof, to ascertain where he’s supposed to be when dropping into coverage, he’d be ‘super-elite.’
In a society where memories have the life span of a love bug flying into traffic on I-75, some already forget Sapp labeled White a near failure a few short weeks ago.

^^Labels peel off, but the vessel remains

  11. Tim Says:

It seems to be clear that this team is sorely lacking, on both sides of the ball, in tough nasty guys. Of course you want smart guys too, otherwise just getting tough guys that aren’t that smart you’ll get a bunch of Dashon Goldson’s. We lose guys like Jensen and Suh for whatever reasons, and you see the result. We should always be on the lookout for the toughest guys we can find, whether in FA or the draft so teams will DREAD having to play the Bucs.

Good adage. After reading it my first thought was of the “unsinkable” Titanic.
The label stuck with one of the doomed ship’s passengers, Molly Brown, but an iceberg successfully peeled it away from the ship.

  13. Beej Says:

Apparently, he doesn’t take EVERY play off

  14. SlyPirate Says:

Great accomplishment. He’s not Brian Urlacher.

  15. BA’s Red Pen Says:

I agree with Joe’s assessment of 45. The only problem is, how long will Hicks stay healthy?

  16. D Says:

He has a realistic chance for 500 and 25. That would be super impressive and unprecedented I presume.

  17. Rod Munch Says:

Literally 90% of the comments on this site said to cut him after one out of context clip was posted on Twitter. That’s how stupid people are.

  18. 1#bucsfan Says:

Rod agreed. does white miss a few tackles of course is he great at coverage not really but he’s better than most middle linebackers and he shows up he still very young and has bin improving. That’s all we can ask

  19. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I agree that having Hicks and Suh previously make him. If he could slow down, not over run the play, and learn to tackle lower he could be a hall of famer. But right now David is the best linebacker on our squad.

  20. Lamarcus Says:

He’s definitely not a top inside linebacker especially not in Urlacher territory. What? Lol What’s the Solo tackle count? I’ll wait….

  21. Buczilla Says:

That’s impressive as all hell when you consider how inconsistent this dude is. He will rip the league in half if he ever finds that consistency.

  22. LakelandSteve Says:

Wow, that’s pretty good company. Who would have thunk it?

  23. Austin Christopher Lewis Says:

Best up the gut stunting linebacker in the game

  24. David Says:

Cleveland should be an easy game plan
    1. Stop the run
    2. Stop the run
    3. Cover Amari Cooper

  25. garro Says:

I realize sacks are important. But I also realize in Bowles defense sacks are often schemed… we get the sack because the offense was basically a man short in blocking or late because of a stunt. Soo… Great he got some sacks but what about the other job responsibilities? Tackling? Not so much, lots of missed ones. You cant put that on Hicks absence. Filling gaps? Yes some of this goes to Hicks absence but not all, as evidenced by over running plays. Pass coverage… um who was i supposed to cover?

Maybe I’m spoiled by watching Brooks and LVD all these years. Those were and are elite!

  26. Destinjohnny Says:

    This team needs a 99
Just a mean Mf who sets the tone
With Suh gone I don’t know who plays that role ?

  27. JeffreyLane77 Says:

Those stats are nice. White is a good player. He just seems to have a string of lousy games at times. I have a hard time blaming injuries on the d-line for White struggling at times. Elite players like Brian Urlacher are the kind of player who would have even more tackles when his D-line isn’t getting it done. Because Urlacher could shed blocks and make plays. When Devin White’s D-line is playing subpar he struggles. Mostly because White has a hard time shedding blocks. He also struggles in coverage against elite talent. And at times he plays so fast he ends up out of position and over pursues. He ends up doing the (as my high school coach called it) the Ole! tackle. It’s when as a defender your so committed to a tackle your running so fast you can’t adjust or change direction. If the ball carrier slows down a little or slightly changes direction. The defender can’t adjust and all he can do is get an arm on the ball carrier while he dives for the turf Ole! I see Devin White do quite a few Ole tackles. Honestly if he would slow down a bit and make the ball carrier commit he would make more tackles.
