Antoine Winfield Still In Concussion Protocol

This is starting to remind Joe of Ali Marpet.
During the Bucs’ Super Bowl season, Pro Bowler Ali Marpet (he made the Pro Bowl after the 2021 season) missed three starts at left guard because of a concussion. He played one more year before retiring and freely admitted his concussion (and who knows how many he had before that?) wass among the reasons he retired.
So why does Joe bring up Marpet here? Because Pro Bowl safety Antoine Winfield is still in concussion protocol, per Bucs coach Todd Bowles.
Winfield suffered a concussion early in the loss to the Stinking Panthers on a tackle. He hasn’t played since. If Winfield doesn’t play Sunday against Seattle, that will mean Winfield misses three straight starts with a concussion. See Marpet, Ali.
Tomorrow after practice, roughly mid-afternoon, the Bucs will hop on a plane and head to Munich for Sunday’s game. Joe doesn’t know, if Winfield is still in concussion protocol, whether doctors will let him board a trans-Atlantic flight some 24 hours later. It doesn’t seem a good bet.
Knowing Winfield also had a concussion last year, and knowing how Marpet gave up football early due to potential long-term effects of his concussions, well, this spooks Joe.

The optic of Tua Tagovailoa after that seemingly routine sack he took and appeared to be spasming right after, has already had BIG repercussions on how concussions are being reacted to and treated by not just other teams around the league, but football at damn near every level.
Sort of like when Korey Stringer passed away in 2001. I was a freshman in HS then and recall that being the last summer I ever had a 3-day practice taking place in our district and statewide. Our coaches found an alternative where we spent every summer after 2001 at a National Guard readiness center called Camp Rowland with 3 other HS teams from around the state doing team building drills, running hill and scrimmaging.

Oh please. The players will play if given the choice. They know the risks. They accept the risks. Everyone has a choice to take money to play an inherently dangerous game, and it will always be inherently dangerous or – perhaps call it another sport because it wouldn’t be football. Just like everything else in life this is about lawyers and lawsuits. And you always have the idealistic pearly clutchers that think the whole world should be in bubble wrap, and that Tua should’ve retired. Which by the way – love seeing Tua kicking everyone’s ass and throwing dimes. He is doing just fine. Every left weirdo wants to try to make life decisions and decide what’s best for a grown man that can make his own decisions

There’s a former Bucs (linebacker I think) lives down the road from late cousin’s house. He would get away from his care-takers now and again, wandering aimlessly down the road in his bathrobe. Don’t end up that way

This season has been a disaster. They’ll struggle to score 13-15 points Sunday and we’ll get another L.

This is not a positive sign – especially with a player who has had previous concussions…
This is one of our best defensive players.
I really hope he can return next week. I wouldn’t rush him back to play overseas this week.

I doubt a commercial flight will hurt concussion protocol. Let’s hope he travels and can continue. Worse case is he is an extra Bucs fan in the stadium. It’s about 9.5 hours give or take and probably better treatment than he gets at home.
Is Joe traveling with the Bucs? Does Joe know if the Bucs have splurged and gotten full lay-flat seats for the charter, or are we cramming 300lbs of muscle into 18″ seats? First overseas flight since 2011.

I sure hope Winfield is ok. There are more important things in life than football. Like living a healthy life. Marpet was smart to get out when he did. Barry Sanders retired young. Get in get paid get out.

Beej, what has happened to Scot Brantley is horrifying as is how the NFL have been denying him benefits over the years. Back in the day that guy was ferocious for the Gators and Bucs and he was quite the talent on Tampa sports radio for many years. Sad situation.

No matter what he should skip the game. It will give him 3 more weeks of rest before the next one. Stay healthy games not worth it

its time to wear those white padding over their helmets during games . We’ve seen it in practice seems to reduce impact by 40%

Not so sure he plays Sunday. With all the backlash over Tua the NFL seems to be taking the concussion thing more seriously now. I don’t know how severity of concussions differ in time away from games but he did take a huge blow with a knee to the side of his head on that play. I could see him being held out until after the bye to make sure he has completely recovered.

This is a great great player and person. We need him something fierce, but, man, he needs his health more than anything.
Wonder if the NFL has looked at baseball catcher’s helmets? A dude can take a 100mph foul tip to the forehead and be fine. Energy absorption technology has made huge strides. C’mon NFL, invest in it and figure it out.
