Can Sneak Get A Peek?

November 5th, 2022

Running back Ke’Shawn Vaughn

The last time the Philadelphia Eagles lost a game, Bucs running back Ke’Shawn “Sneak” Vaughn was moving the chains on them for 53 yards on 17 carries with five first-down runs and a touchdown.

Fast forward 10 months and the Bucs’ running game is the worst in the NFL and historically bad — and Vaughn hasn’t had a carry despite being healthy.

No wonder Leonard Fournette feels badly for Vaughn.

Vaughn had success last season in multiple games, but under Todd Bowles he can’t get a sniff. It’s odd.

Obviously, Joe doesn’t think Vaughn riding the bench is why the Bucs are struggling. But it sure would be nice to see if he could provide a spark, especially in short yardage where he seems to hit holes faster and lower than Fournette.

Maybe all the self-scouting the Bucs did over there 10 days off will lead to Vaughn getting his first carries of the season on Sunday.

!7 carries for 53 yards?…..That’s 3.1 YPC…..no better than anyone else…. That’s also the playoffs against a good defense. –Joe

I remember when fans scoffed at Rojo when he carried for 4.1….

Nevertheless, I think KV should get some carries….

Since Lenny & White are good receivers….it may tip a run when KV is in.

  2. Kentucky Buc Says:

Why does it matter? Until backs quit being hit 3 yards deep in the backfield it doesn’t matter who’s back there.

  3. Chris@Apple Roof Cleaning Tampa Says:

I agree that having Vaughn in there will tip a run.
I have never been a Vaughn Fan Boy, and I thought there were better players to be had when we drafted him.
Kentucky Buc has a great point when he said that until our backs quite getting hit 3 yards deep in the backfield, it does not matter much who is back there.
I see the game tomorrow as a must win for us, if we are going to have any hope of saving our season.
We have had a full 10 days to prepare for the Rams, so I look for us to win tomorrow here in Tampa.

  4. Beeej Says:

Vaughn is in the dog house, not obvious why

  5. SOEbuc Says:

I’ll agree with you there Joe. Has Ke’ had one carry or even been on the field this year. Leonard will come out of the game for a large chunk, Rachad White who can’t get through the middle is the only other RB. We are dead last, let’s give him a shot. Still, it’s Byron and his glorious run scheme.

  6. Beeej Says:

For that matter, I wonder if Suh and JPP were in Bowle’s dog house too, and he didn’t have the authority to address it before

  7. adam from ny Says:

wow i’m blocked off the site

  8. Youngbucs Says:

Rojo sneak and white should’ve been the rbs.

  9. Bojim Says:

No matter how bad our running game is Boeles won’t play Vaughn. Go figure. Maybe he’s saving him for the playoffs? 😉

  10. Derek Says:

By now Vaughn probably wants the heck out of TB

  11. Casual Observer Says:

Agree with Kentucky. Like some pitchers, we seem to be tipping our plays – at least too many of them. Adjustment time!

  12. WillieG Says:

Is it possible the Bucs entered this year with the assumption they will make the playoffs so they need to keep some skill position players on ice, thus keeping them relatively fresh?

  13. Marine Buc Says:

    @ Joe

At some point you have to ask yourself – “why is Sneak in the Bucs doghouse?”

    Lack of production?

    Lack of progression?

    Lack of proper attitude?

    Lack of ability?

As inept as this coaching staff has become – I still trust there is something within their evaluation of this person that is a glaring reason why “Sneak” is inactive week after week…

Unfortunately – I just believe the dude is a bust.

  14. The Beer Whisperer Says:

I’m sorry, but Barry Sanders would struggle behind this o-line.

  15. Marine Buc Says:

    @ The Beer

True. But Sneak hasn’t had to run behind this offensive line…

Personally I believe we should call this a “highly offensive line” at this point.

    LOL!

  16. Jason Says:

I forgot he was still on the team. Smh.

  17. Kentucky Buc Says:

Bucs are losing in the trenches on both sides of the ball compounded by predictable play calling. Hicks should help the d line if he stays healthy. The O line is another story. O line is a unit thing. Can they improve ? 🤞

  18. LakelandSteve Says:

For some reason Sneak is still a Buc. But for some reason they won’t put him in the ballgame other than Special Teams. We saw last year that Vaughn could play and play well but for some reason Leftwhich hasn’t even tried to see if he could spark the running game. What do you have to lose? You are already the worst team in the league running the ball, so why not give him a shot?

  19. Redeemer Says:

I didn’t even know he was still on the roster. I guess, can’t get any worse than last in the league.

  20. D-Rok Says:

I would like to see a few 2-back sets a game with White and Sneak. The D wouldn’t be tipped off run vs. pass.

  21. sasquatch Says:

    Is it a doghouse?

They have Fournette and White ahead of him. When you’re not running the ball a whole lot and your top 2 backs are healthy, the number 3 isn’t going to see the field. Nothing against Vaughn.

    Pretty simple.

  22. BucsfanFred Says:

There is bound to be an injury at some point. Sneak will get a chance.

  23. Rod Munch Says:

What in the world would make anyone think Vaughn would do better? The issue is blocking, not the RB’s.

  24. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

We need a new playbook . The Bucs are getting out coached. As evidenced by our opponents coming into our stadium better prepared, more disciplined, executing quickly and accurately, and punching our players in the mouth. We can’t even get lined up correctly pre snap. Carries over from last year vs the RAms nit getting lined up, confusion before the snap. Should not sill be happening. This is amateur hour football not a playoff coaching staff.

  25. BucsfanFred Says:

Can Sneak block? I know he can catch a little.

  26. Seattle Buc is back in TB Says:

The issue is design as well Rod. When was the last time you heard someone say “That was a well designed play” regarding our offense. We’re not fooling anyone and players are getting beat individually. Not a good football team. We all know what bad football looks like. We are Bacs fans after all.

  27. Rod Munch Says:

Seattle Buc – Well, yes, I normally always say the God awful play calling, which would include that, but I didn’t want to get repetitive.

The Bucs do have well designed plays left over from Arians, they just don’t call them, because Leftwich is an idiot.

For the blocking, the run blocking isn’t great, but as I’ve pointed out many times before, that’s because the defenses sit on the run and have extra guys in the box, and when you only have 2 blockers trying to open a hole vs 3 or more defenders, we know how that almost always turns out.

  28. Joe in Michigan Says:

Do you remember Vaughn dropping passes last year? Remember when Brady threw as soft as he could to Vaughn, and he still dropped it? I think that’s why he doesn’t see the field.

  29. Beeej Says:

    I thought that was Rojo

“Vaughn is in the dog house, not obvious why.”
    .
    .

That’s what I’ve been thinking. Then I think, Vaughn might be alright with not being forced to run straight into gap blitzes over and over again.

  31. Listnfrmafar Says:

It can’t be due to stats, no one looks at them so he has to be in the doghouse. Brady doesn’t turn his back on a player for one bad drop. If so Johnson wouldn’t be back, Miller, Gage, Otton etc would be off the field. That’s just silly. The telling story behind this team lies with Beasely. He begged Brady to get him on the team then 2 weeks later retires??? Something stinks in Bowelsville!!!

  32. Buczilla Says:

Our runnng game is horrifically bad, so it sure as hell can’t hurt. Wake me when it’s 4/27/2023.

  33. D-Rok Says:

The mystery of why Cole retired after only 2 weeks on this team will be a huge story at some point.

Vaughn is in the dog house, not obvious why

    Another brilliant move by Leftwich

  35. Vlad The Impaler Says:

Vaughn might be alright with not being forced to run straight into gap blitzes over and over again.

That’s the only run play that Leftwich knows

  36. Buc4evr Says:

Lousy o-line, lousy play calling, doesn’t matter who the RB is when opponents stack the box. Let sneak play, won’t make any difference.

  37. Tony Says:

Maybe we can find a way to turn Brady into Vick or Lamar now?😃 Since our OL isn’t helping much. What they need to do is trade down as much as possible next year & build the team some more. Especially if they’re not gonna go out in FA & they’re not gonna do anything during the trade deadline.

  38. sasquatch Says:

Why make up stories about a dog house? He’s the 3rd RB. When you don’t run much anyway and the top 2 guys have been healthy, why would you think that the lack of opportunities for the 3rd back means he’s in the doghouse? It’s a stupid narrative.

  39. steele Says:

Sneak should start. Why not? He’s more decisive and quicker than Lenny any day.
But no. Insist on Lenny tip toeing slowly in to the backs of his blockers and getting taken down. Insist on Rachaad, because they want to be able to say they drafted brilliantly.

This roster needs at least two new backs. A complete top level feature back, a power back with even more power for short yardage. A legit fullback would also be nice.

    Until that happens, it’s mediocrity.

  40. Tony Says:

They don’t use Bernard at all & they should. Even though Bernard is out right now. Maybe they should use Bernard more when he comes back.

    ^^^^^^^^^
Vaughn has only caught 50% of the passes thrown to him, which is terrible for an RB (easiest passes to catch are the ones to the RB). He’s had more than one drop, if you’ve watched the games.

  42. EEK Says:

If Vaughn blows it up it’s a bad look
If he’s terrible it’s probably a worse look

  43. Joe in Michigan Says:

I’ve never once wondered why Vaughn isn’t getting playing time, although I’ve wondered why he’s on the Bucs roster at all. His scouting report probably says he’s an okay runner, below average receiver. A poor man’s Ronald Jones.

  44. Eckwood Says:

    1. Vaughn can catch and if he can’t it’s on the Team qb and coaches
    2. He led the SEC in YPC
    3. I don’t think he is a super star ,,,but be has body lean,
Gets skinny in small holes and ( HITS A HOLE ) which
Other Bucs backs are embarrassing at !!
    4. He is the BEST short yardage option by far
( another coaching failure) if he gets half the bad personnel
Short yardage first downs the Bucs have 2 more wins
    5. See above coaching failure .
    6. Brady isn’t 100 percent in charge of the offense , oh my bad he is and it doesn’t work , Arians was in charge like it or not !!! ……. Routes, throws, avg per comp, T ends, slot 5 yard turn around s

  45. Browsing from DC Says:

According to the NFL stat boys, Vaughan had a 5.0 average on 36 carries for 180 yards last year. (Not sure if it counts playoffs)

Does this sound about right Joe? Very small sample size and behind a much better o-line.

I’m guessing him and Gio are kept off the 53 man roster since they need to keep rotating receivers and need the spots for the inevitable injury and deep down the coaches probably know what others have said here…doesn’t matter who is in there behind this line, especially with the predictable, vanilla blocking schemes.

  46. SOEbuc Says:

I thought everyone wants BA back? He loved Ke’

  47. Eckwood Says:

BAD COACHES don’t understand short yardage and Tampa now has Really Bad Coaching !!!1 Plus 1 =2 ….. 2 plus 98 = 100 percent correct !!! BAD COACHING !

  48. SOEbuc Says:

What the hell does it matter if he can block or not Lenny and especially White are running into brick walls like Doug Martin in Koetter days. Vaughn has at least the ability to find a hole and has serious wheels.
