Todd Bowles Talks Run Defense And “Brain Farts”
November 2nd, 2022More “brain fart” talk today from Buccaneers head coach Todd Bowles.
Yes, Bucs football makes everyone think of flatulence and bowel movements these days.
At 3-5 a game behind Marcus Mariota and the Falcons, the Bucs are in crisis mode, although you wouldn’t know it listening to Bowles. However, the team has passed on coaching and personnel changes for now.
Bowles talked about Thursday’s second-half defensive fails today and mentioned what he said yesterday on the Buccaneers Radio Networks. Too many brain farts.
“We’re losing games off a lack of technique and fundamentals in the second half where we have a brain fart here and there, so we went back to basics,” Bowles said on radio.
“… We misfit some things in the second half and we took some bad angles. And the tackling was shoddy. We understand we gotta get a lot better at tackling. In the first half it was good, in the second half it wasn’t as much.”
Man, that “mini-bye” sure didn’t seem to invigorate the head coach or the locker room. Joe didn’t get good vibes today at One Buc Palace.
Still, vibes and talk don’t win games. Playing hard and playing smart is what puts up the Ws.
The “shoddy tackling” line shook Joe. It’s miseason … tackle!
November 2nd, 2022 at 1:55 pm
Not as concerned with the defense as much as with the offense seems like they are going to run the season with leftwich predictable play calling just doesn’t seem like he is the guy without Bruce.
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:09 pm
Apparently, Devin White refused to be interviewed in the open locker room period for reporters today. So, I guess we’ll if his play this week will be enough to silence some of the deserved criticism he’s receiving.
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:19 pm
It doesn’t take a genius to realize that a lack of discipline is at the root of the problem. Show me a business that has very lax discipline throughout the organization and I’ll show you a business that puts out a crappy product…..like the Bucs do on game day.
It starts with discipline.
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:20 pm
We’re approaching the halfway mark for the 2022-2023 Season and its become apparent that theres no one person to blame for the Bucs losing season thus far. Dropped TD passes by Evans,Julios lack of play,Bradys underthrown balls, poor tackling, the non existence of Fornette/running game. List can go on and on. This team lacks confidence, and basic fundamentals! Darden cant hold onto the ball for life of him. Hard to see endless talent go to waste. The fact that Tampa was virtually nonexistent during draft deadline tells me not much change is coming anytime soon! TE is much needed now more than ever, yet for whatever reason Bucs personnel seem to be content with what’s not there?? Theres reason to believe that internal problems seem to be at the forefront of this embarrassing season, and if it’s not addressed soon,I’m afraid the time to right the ship will be too far gone
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:20 pm
“A brain fart here and there” ???
How about standing around watching people run by you, or holding on to the guy blocking you as you watch the guy run by you?
Or in the case of Linderbaum, letting him push you 15 yards down the field before putting you on your a$$ 👀 DWhite.
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:23 pm
Bowles needs to stop talking. Paying lip service to the media isn’t helping his football team. Do the required stuff, and shut up. Trying to explain away a lack of effort, makes him look even more out of touch. I hope behind the scenes, he’s challenging guys manhood. There is never an excuse for not trying hard.
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:23 pm
Willie G
I always thought BA was loosey goosey.
Bowles makes BA look like Ray Perkins.
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:24 pm
The team is so badly out of physical shape they are making mistakes because they are physically exhausted.
If you want to call these mistakes “Brain Farts” so be it.
The first quarter of the Ravens game showed what we are capable of, when we are not exhausted.
The play by play announcers picked up on our physical exhaustion in the Ravens Game several times.
Yes, our defense was on the field a lot because the offense went 3 and out several times, but we have to train for that.
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:25 pm
I would have traded Devin White just to make a point but this entire organization is stuck in a culture of apathy and incompetence. Absolutely no accountability. And to think, all this in just 8 games into Bowles 5 yr contract.
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:27 pm
A brain fart? He who smellt it, dealt it!
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:29 pm
This just occurred to me. Did Bowles actually interview for the bucs job, or was it a simple formality? Listening to him makes me want to curl up on the couch, with some sleepytime tea. He commands no respect, or his team would be playing harder.
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:38 pm
I agree with an earlier comment by DR. Todd Bowles is a solid defensive coordinator but he is not a good head coach.
I’m fine with moving on from BA but the Bucs should have brought in a skilled offensive coordinator as the head coach and kept Bowles as an assistant HC and DC.
BL should be an assistant OC and QB coach. He is absolutely not a qualified NFL OC…
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:41 pm
Is it 2023 yet?
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:52 pm
When your offense can’t run & has the worst rushing in the league\
When your offense can’t convert on third downs
When your offense can’t get a yard when needed
When your offense fails in the red zone and gets 3 instead of 7
When your offense loses the time of possession by a large margin
When your punter is one of the best offensive weapons
When your Kicker leads the league in FGs
Your defense doesn’t stand much of a chance of being good.
November 2nd, 2022 at 2:56 pm
Did I miss something, aren’t these guys all professionals who have been making tackles for decades now?
That seems like a poor leader’s excuse for creating an environment where the players have no confidence in the calls or the system and so try to do too much.
November 2nd, 2022 at 3:01 pm
Yawn!
November 2nd, 2022 at 3:11 pm
Someone had a brain fart when they hired his dumb as.
November 2nd, 2022 at 3:13 pm
Sorry, I can’t really give Bowles credit as a coordinator when the team cant tackle and keepe making the same mistakes. Just look how last year ended.
As a HC, we are the new Jets, nothing more, nothing less
November 2nd, 2022 at 3:15 pm
This kind of incompetence is what happens when a guy is gifted the job and the best coach is not hired.
November 2nd, 2022 at 3:21 pm
JMarkBuc. I think BA was a disciplinarian when he had to be (just ask Gronk). He would chew anyone’s ass. He would also release anyone who didn’t want to be here, like Fournette.
I also think not having Suh and JPP affects discipline. Suh strikes me as the kind of guy who would chew some ass on and off the field. Maybe JPP was that way too?
Now who do we have on D? Devin “Loaf” Alexander aka Kwon “someone else can make a play” White?
November 2nd, 2022 at 3:21 pm
It is readily apparent that the players are no longer listening to the coaches. Which means it is the same as not having any coach at all. So if we essentially do not have anyone steering the ship, tell me how we could do any worse by making a mid-season change? And I continue to be flummoxed by how invisible our consultant in Arians seems to be.
November 2nd, 2022 at 3:21 pm
Hopefully Hicks and his sore foot will be back soon. Dude is missing half the season for plantar fasciitis. That’s weak.
November 2nd, 2022 at 3:27 pm
At worst I was expecting a coach or player to be cut or demoted during the mini-bye. Nothing, nada.
Remember when BA cut Hargreaves for not hustling on a play! That’s how you send a message.
November 2nd, 2022 at 3:31 pm
With the players brain farts and the sh*tty coaching, we effectively Shart weekly
Nice Todd
November 2nd, 2022 at 3:36 pm
All I can do is shake my head.
The biggest brain fart is allowing this dark comedy to continue as-is, with just excuses propping it up.
No heart.
No head.
No leadership.
Nobody should wear a “c” on this sorry bunch.
November 2nd, 2022 at 3:42 pm
Brain Farts is what I shall henceforth freer to TB and BL as
November 2nd, 2022 at 4:08 pm
this is for you older fans. Remember Bill Russell with the Boston Celtics? What was he known for?? He was a player/coach, Let Todd “F UP” the defense and give Tom the keys. Let Byran be the clock watcher. you know make sure there’s on delay of game calls
November 2nd, 2022 at 4:09 pm
I didn’t read the whole article but just curious. Is Bowles saying his players have brian farts or is Todd finally admiting that he is a Brain Fart. One big Brain Fart. Yeah, that’s right. I capitalized it.
November 2nd, 2022 at 4:12 pm
Let’s go Byron!!!
November 2nd, 2022 at 4:14 pm
A brain fart is a one-play occurrence during a game where your mind just goes blank like the Twilight Zone. Most players who care only have a few farts per year. Hey, it happens – happened to me once, so I know what it feels like.
Way too many farts going on up in here. I give my dog a supplement for itchy butt so maybe Poo Be Gone should be included in the diet of a few select Bucs’ players?
Asking for my dog who is pissed at the performance of the Bucs this year.
November 2nd, 2022 at 4:22 pm
Dooley,
Refused to be interviewed? If true, DW’s head is nowhere near where it needs to be as an NFL player. This shocks me. Refuse? Playoffs?
Chris,
You may be right on conditioning. If you are right, where does that responsibility lie? The players or coaches? Which coach is ULTIMATELY responsible for the product on the field? Coach Brady? Again, ALL signs point to Coach Bowles and the ship he is (not) sailing.
C’mon man. This is a professional football team.
November 2nd, 2022 at 4:25 pm
“Tampabay buc fan ” laid it out pretty well…
All of those realities are because when we lost Marpet & Cappa last spring–mgmt (Licht ,bowles ,BA ) made the decision to go with rookies to replace 2 probowl level players… Then on the 2nd day of camp , Jensen went down –so AGAIN the mgmt brain trust farted & deceided Not to trade for a proven player..
Instead ,they spent cap space on Jones, Rudolf , Hicks , Bernard & Gage ……
November 2nd, 2022 at 4:27 pm
PS: A source just told me that Brady gave the coaches the day off and the whole team is running gassers on the hill behind the stadium.
Yes, that source is my dog – who is surprisingly adept at identifying weaknesses on a pro football team, and a dog who doesn’t refuse to take her anti-fart medicine.
November 2nd, 2022 at 4:45 pm
Ravens had the ball 11 minutes of the 2nd quarter so it’s a stretch to say the first half was good. I’ll give you the first quarter.
November 2nd, 2022 at 4:46 pm
I get brain farts, all the time. Thankfully, they aren’t nationally televised.
November 2nd, 2022 at 4:48 pm
The most bizarre chapter ( I am not even calling it a season) in Buccaneer history!
The Lost Season
another Devils Triangle mystery
November 2nd, 2022 at 4:54 pm
The whole team is a brain fart including the boneheaded coaching and play calling. This team needs to get back to moving the chains. There are a lot of low probability plays that are not helping. Brady has looked like he no longer can make all the throws. Our receivers are not helping. I’m not even going to get into the defensive issues, but the offense has been just pathetic and BL is doing nothing to change it.
November 2nd, 2022 at 5:06 pm
We’ve just witnessed, one of the shortest dynasties in history.
One year? Eighteen months?
November 2nd, 2022 at 5:08 pm
Leftwich is not Brain Sharts and Bowles is Sharts for Brains… or the other way around. Both work. Players ride the pine if they get paid millions to lay deuces all over the field every week… looking at you D White
November 2nd, 2022 at 5:09 pm
ARRRGH ///. Leftwich IS NOW to be called Brain Sharts. My tying sucks

“ Professional” football team” ? A “professional” team is led by a real coaching staff ( see Seahawks, Chiefs, etc. where coaches show some emotion, are there to high five guys after running good plays, —-) We have a mannequin for a head coach who sometimes grimaces and an OC who leaves his QB sitting alone on the bench between series. Guys screw up, come out of the game and no one is in their face? One time I did see Bowles chirp at White and what did White do? Rolled his eyes and blew off his head coach. What did Bowles do? Patented grimace and turned his back on him. Think a real coach would do that? He should have been in his face and found a place on the bench for him for a while! Any of our back ups could not have done worse for a few plays than what White was putting on the field. No discipline at all on this team. NOT a professional team at this point. Stop calling these guys “ professional” until they show it on the field.
November 2nd, 2022 at 5:15 pm
Joe’s, how is it possible the Left foot didn’t retain ANY offensive prowess from learning under B.A for all these years!?
November 2nd, 2022 at 5:16 pm
The things I’m worried about more than “brain farts”:
1) Lack of effort (see Devin White)
2) Lack of technique (see Joe Tryon)
3) Lack of conditioning (see Vita Vea)
November 2nd, 2022 at 5:27 pm
Joe, can you expound upon, “Joe didn’t get good vibes today at One Buc Palace.”
Can you be a bit more descriptive into not good vibes? Were all the players down-trodden, beat down, perhaps? Did you observe any empty nooses in players’ lockers? Perhaps Joe will write about this tomorrow or, more likely, talk about it on the next Ira Kaufman Podcast. –Joe
November 2nd, 2022 at 5:30 pm
When I decide not to give the Glazers 5 grand next year…it won’t be a brain fart.
November 2nd, 2022 at 5:37 pm
In hindsight, boy did Bruce do a damn good job. Super Bowl and almost went back again. Look at the dumpster fire the Rams are 8 games removed. At least Bruce gave us two good years, one of them marred by injuries and some idyut taking his jersey off and quitting on the team mid game.
That being said, we suck right now. Byron’s play calling is as flat as his duncy hat brim.
November 2nd, 2022 at 5:38 pm
Tampabaybucfan, the 99 Bucs would like to have a word with you.
November 2nd, 2022 at 5:42 pm
The brain fart was hiring these two coordinators. Didn’t the Glazers learn from the lovie debacle. Hopefully, one and done. But a list super bowl opportunity in the meantime.
November 2nd, 2022 at 5:42 pm
Lost.
November 2nd, 2022 at 5:59 pm
Thanks, Joe. If nobody else can, I can recognize the importance of a team in this state, Not having a good vibe. It might point to, actually, bigger problems than what has been reported so far about this team. This inquiring fan hopes to see / hear something more about this topic – it’s important, in my opinion.
November 2nd, 2022 at 6:19 pm
Is this Brain Fart stuff for real? WHAT DO BRAIN FARTS HAVE TO DO WITH FOOTBALL? Now we have the Buccaneer Blazing Huddles….Phew! Talk about running off the fans?
November 2nd, 2022 at 6:29 pm
Bucs put in the offensive line on 4th and one…On the snap they all let go a huge toxic fart. Brady and the refs pass out from the blast and Darden darts in from the sideline and scores becaus the wind was swirling around and he had on a mask. conked out the out the defense….brilliant.
November 2nd, 2022 at 6:45 pm
They will retain the coaching staff until the end of the season and begin tanking after the bye. You don’t need to make mid-season coaching changes if you are tanking. If Brady plays another season, it will be with another team.
It is painful to be a fan of this team.
November 2nd, 2022 at 6:48 pm
Maybe they finally learned something about running their mouths in interviews and getting bit in the butt by it. Watched all the interviews. Bad vibes? Looks like they are circling the wagons. Could be a good thing. Maybe they finally figured out all the backdoor questions the media tries on them. JaLa, Pooter deport and Irv Krautman being the main culprits .
November 2nd, 2022 at 7:00 pm
Kentucky,
Circling the wagons usually means you/your unit is coming out for a dog-fight. Is there some fight left in this dog called the 2022 Bucs?
November 2nd, 2022 at 7:11 pm
At least we still have MJ Acosta Ruiz in tight leather pants to look forward to.
November 2nd, 2022 at 7:13 pm
D-Rok, can’t say circling the wagons, could be offensive. Try dancing around the tulips.
November 2nd, 2022 at 8:12 pm
D-Rok. We will find out soon enough. When everybody gets down on you, you either quit or put your back to the wall and smash everything in front of you.
November 2nd, 2022 at 8:24 pm
Kentucky,
I know what I’d do, and have done: Prove people wrong. Indeed, we will find out soon enough.
November 2nd, 2022 at 8:25 pm
Just think…there was actually a time teams allegedly interviewed/wanted LeftFoot and Bowles for head coach. Not only would those two hot potatoes been elsewhere/another team’s problem…there would be compensatory draft picks in play. That’s a double dic kick.
November 2nd, 2022 at 8:25 pm
Oh Listn,
Circling the wagons has always been a defensive posture. Now if you are being sarcastic about the Bucs, yep, tulips. LOL
November 2nd, 2022 at 9:39 pm
Devin White just isn’t a good leader
November 2nd, 2022 at 9:58 pm
Shoddy coaching makes for shoddy games
This group is lost, dazed, and confused

.
I’m at the same point. We lived too many years with this junk, and now we’re seeing it again.
I just don’t have it in me anymore. I have stopped buying all Bucs merchandise, I barely even bother with Bucs news, absolutely no podcasts, and I stopped watching before the end of the last two game…which is something I have never done.
I figure, if their going to quit before the end, why shouldn’t I?
I do believe we have some great young players with great futures ahead of them…but unfortunately, half of them are injured.
November 2nd, 2022 at 11:36 pm
I will point this out though…some players took initiative and had a player’s meeting a week ago…so there are some who want to change things.
November 3rd, 2022 at 12:15 am
Im gonna keep posting this on all the threads… until the Brain Fart twins leave town. Or the Brain Shart twins I should say.
Fill in the blank: Tom Brady’s biggest problem this season is _______.
Jenna Laine, Buccaneers reporter: Interior protection. The Bucs’ interior pass-blockers have produced a pass block win rate of 87.9% through eight games, second worst in the NFL. The interior line is also responsible for 34 Brady incompletions, the most in the NFL for any quarterback.
Pure unadulterated SHIZZA
November 5th, 2022 at 2:26 am
Toad’s Bowel is way smarter than everyone else. That’s a problem. He’s giving his players quantum mechanics and they can barely add up what 21 + 3 equals. (A loss).
Done.
