Joe’s head is still throbbing. It’s been Advil City since last night. And Joe didn’t touch a drop of alcohol (though Joe felt like doing a John Belushi in “Animal House” and chugging a bottle of Jack. It’s Monday, so let’s get going.
Pittsburgh-Unready
This game was such an atrocious, irresponsible coaching job by Bucs offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich. It was the worst head-up-your-tailpipe job Joe has seen since the Tennessee-Ready game to open the 2015 season.
Tennessee-Ready was the debut of Jameis Winston. All that summer, head coach Lovie Smith preached if not boasted the Bucs would be “Tennessee-Ready.” Hoo, boy!
Even worse for the Bucs, it also was the debut of runaround quarterback Marcus Mariota, the guy drafted one pick after Jameis. The Oregon quarterback was very much on the Bucs’ draft board had the Bucs turned up something untoward enough on Jameis to scare them off.
Lousy Lovie even watched Mariota play in college in person and attended his Pro Day at Oregon. So Joe figured Lovie, a defensive coordinator at heart, watched a lot of tape on Mariota given that the Bucs were going to draft a quarterback. When Mariota was picked by Tennessee, then-Titans coach Ken Whisenhunt installed an Oregon-like spread-option offense to help Mariota adjust to the NFL.
But on opening day, Mariota and Tennessee ran over the Bucs like Lovie never once saw a snap of a spread-option. The hapless and helpless Bucs defense was gouged like it was Rice or Indiana. It was like the spread-option completely and totally took Lovie by surprise. It was embarrassing.
Joe later learned Team Glazer was so irate about the loss they could barely speak to those in football operations for weeks. It was the beginning of the end for Lovie.
A few weeks later came the Capitol Collapse, which for all intents and purposes sealed Lovie’s fate. Simply put, Team Glazer did not like that.
Yesterday reminded Joe of that sad Bucs history. While seven years ago Lovie got caught with his pants down by the spread-option, Leftwich got caught with his pants down by all the injuries to the Steelers’ defense.
T.J. Watt, perhaps the best pass rusher in the game was out. So too was All-Pro safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, maybe the best safety in the NFL. Then the Steelers’ top three corners were out.
Even the weakest high school offensive coordinator knows the gameplan should have been to attack, attack, attack the Steelers through the those massive injuries in the pass defense, and with the Bucs holding such a superior edge at the skill positions,
If Bill Belicheat had Tom Brady, Mike Evans and Chris Godwin and/or even Russell Gage, what do you think he would have done? He likely would have put the ball in the air 40 times — in the first half alone.
Nope. Leftwich went ground-and-pound, apparently oblivious to the fact his running backs — yes, *his* because he’s in charge of the offense — had the worst yards-per-carry in the league. If the Steelers had a strength on defense, it was their rush defense.
Just unreal!
Six hours after the game and Joe still cannot find words to convey the disgust and amazement at how badly Leftwich botched that game yesterday. Joe likes Todd Bowles but he should share some of the blame.
At some point, couldn’t the head coach get on the headset, “Hey Byron, knock off the two-yard runs on first down. Let’s start going after their backups in the secondary.”
And if Joe is going to quibble with Brady — Joe won’t — it would be because Brady didn’t overrule Leftwich (you know Brady has that power) by telling him, “Byron, quit running, we have to attack their secondary.” It shouldn’t have come to that, though.
It was as if Leftwich developed the gameplan Monday or Tuesday of last week without knowing who would be out for Pittsburgh. When the injury report came out Friday with all of those starters declared out, Leftwich was too stubborn (or unwilling) to update the plan?
Joe remembers once his old man told him, “It’s one thing to be stubborn. It’s another to be stubborn and dumb.” Joe has the feeling the latter described Leftwich’s run-run-run gameplan yesterday until the Bucs had no choice but to throw for a comeback. And look what happened then: They scored a touchdown!
That disgrace was the Bucs’ offensive version of Tennessee-Ready.
And Joe is sick about it.
Difference Is Bucco Bruce Arians
Joe remembers prior to Bucco Bruce Arians being hired, Joe heard all sorts of NFL people — including Father Dungy and Chucky — say with firm conviction that the Bucs had the talent to win.
Even Dirk Koetter said this without blinking an eye.
Joe kept hearing this and the Bucs kept losing. It got to the point Joe thought these folks were just yapping because they didn’t want to insult players, coaches or front office types at One Buc Palace.
In comes Arians and in two years — two! — he turns that team, with its core from the Lost Decade mostly intact — into Super Bowl champs.
After yesterday’s debacle in Pittsburgh, Joe thought of the Lost Decade and those talented players, many still with the Bucs.
What turned the Bucs from losers into champs? Arians. What’s missing from the Bucs this year? Arians.
Arians had the perfect disposition. He was a grandfatherly type, close to his players but he didn’t blink an eye if someone needed his arse chewed good and proper. Loud and dirty. F’ bombs flying.
Joe is not one to think a guy needs to be Bobby Knight to coach well. Some of the best coaches in NFL history were stoic on the sidelines. Some were redarses, sure. A coach’s personality does not dictate if he’s a winner or not. Former Bucs commander Greg Schiano was an in-your-face coach. He failed. Dirk Koetter leaned to the stoic side. He mostly failed.
But Joe does think there is something to a guy who will ride a player if needed to get a point across, to motivate. Todd Bowles will do that, just behind the scenes. Arians didn’t give a damn who was watching or listening.
Arians brought a bite, a standard. Production was demanded. For example, Joe remembers seeing former tight end Tanner Hudson drop a catchable ball in 2020 training camp. Mount Arians exploded on him, “Catch the mother f’ing ball!” Joe never heard any of that this summer.
Joe once saw Arians run former guard Alex Cappa off the field in practice, serenaded by all sorts of foul language for making what Arians later said in his press conference was a “real dumb@ss play.” Joe didn’t see any of that this summer.
Are the Bucs losing because Arians is no longer in charge? Joe doesn’t know.
But the way the Bucs have played the past four weeks, with all their talent, they sure seem more like Koetter’s Bucs than Arians’ Bucs. Don’t they?
Joe Won’t Blame Devin White
Once again, the Bucs couldn’t start the game on defense. They got bullied down the field on the Steelers’ first possession for an 11-play touchdown drive.
But Joe cannot blame Bowles. The defense was off the field on that first Pittsburgh possession … until that yellow hanky came out. Devin White made one of the stupidest late hits you will see on a quarterback.
Joe had his binoculars on Steelers quarterback Kenny Pickett. Joe saw White get past his blocker and right then Pickett unloaded the ball. White was well away from Pickett.
Joe couldn’t believe the call on White. White wasn’t near Pickett when the rookie let go of the ball.
That play, if you want to be an arsehole about it, cost the Bucs the game. Pittsburgh would score a touchdown on that drive and the Bucs lost 20-18. But you know what, the Bucs had 52 minutes left to bounce back. So Joe cannot finger White.
That belonged to the guy on the Bucs sideline calling plays seemingly in a vacuum.
The Mitch Trubisky Hex
Mitch Trubisky is a trash quarterback. He was truly horrible in Chicago, a big tease in Buffalo in limited action, and downright brutal with the Steelers.
Yet Trubisky came alive coming off the bench for an injured Pickett to connect on 9 of 12 passes for 144 yards and a touchdown to prevent the Bucs from coming back.
Yes, this is the same Trubisky whose singular moment of glory previously was going scorched earth on the Bucs. It was a dreary, damp, chilly late-September day (welcome to Chicago) along the banks of Lake Michigan and Trubisky went bananas looking more like Dan Marino than, well, Trubisky. The pride of North Carolina ripped up the Bucs (Mike Smith says hi) completing 19 of 26 passes for 354 yards and six touchdowns. Yeah, six.
So it seems Trubisky lives large against Tampa Bay. Joe never wants to see that guy on an NFL field in person again.
Trubisky against the Bucs is 28 of 38 for 498 yards, seven touchdowns and no picks.
Investments Looking Bad So Far
The Bucs rolled the dice on offseason replacements to take over for some effective players. Akiem Hicks was supposed to replace Ndamukong Suh. Russell Gage was initially supposed to replace Antonio Brown. Then Julio Jones was to replace Brown. Kyle Rudolph was going to ease the pain of losing Rob Gronkowski.
The results? Poor.
Already more than one-third through the 2022 season and Joe the new guys aren’t faring well.
Injury-prone Hicks has made a limited impact. He didn’t make it through his second game before he was lost for what was expected to be five games. The fifth game is next week in Charlotte.
Jones has missed as much time. Like Hicks, the Bucs knew Jones was no stranger to the injured reserve list. The Bucs thought if they managed his workload in practice Jones would be healthy enough to play. Instead, the Bucs recently and openly discussed putting Jones on ice until January.
(The way the Bucs are playing, they won’t have to worry about Jones showing up in January.)
Gage? He’s battled injuries since OTAs. He’s on the injury report every week. Sure, he gets on the field but his impact has been meh. A possession receiver and little more. Yesterday facing a trash secondary, Gage had two catches on four targets for 20 yards. Eh.
Rudolph? He’s the fourth-string tight end and is rarely active on gameday.
In all, these four replacements have made nowhere near the impact of the guys they replaced. So far, it seems like good money flushed.

Joe nails it again! By the way, has anyone arrested Julio and Gage for highway robbery? Julio’s contract is incentive laden, but Gage is wearing a ski mask and robbing us blind. Who’s keeping track of the pulse of this locker room. This team needs a player only meeting before it totally implodes like the Panthers. There are photos of Brady with his right ring finger taped, and yet he wasn’t on the injury report. At least Rodgers was honest and said his thumb affecting some of his throws. I know Brady will never make excuses, but something is fishy about the lack of honestly about Brady’s shoulder and finger.
The folks on this board fell for the national media driven rift between BA and Brady. Brady would kill for BA right now. Leftwich’s press conferences have been worthless. If I hear him talk about being “multiple” im gonna scream. He talks about stuff we don’t see that they’re doing well. Really? I’m starting to believe the “red pen” story. It’s not manifesting itself on the field. We gave Goedeke a fair chance. It’s been six games. The kid isn’t getting his job done. The film is out on this guy. His technique is so poor because LG isn’t his natural position. Where’s the accountability? He’s bad in pass pro and run blocking. We can’t get one damn yard! I saw it in training camp against the Dolphins. We can’t trying to run the ball, and wasn’t successful.
Sadly, I don’t think Leftwich will change. His pride and ego are too big. He was on that Pivot podcast and he blasted the media and fans over the criticism his play calling. He dared to be upset that we wanted to modernize our offense by adding motion.

I think you forgot to mention also the 3rd down defense. Gave up at least 4-5 3rd and 10+ conversions, 2 on the final drive for the steelers.

Joe, why wouldn’t Brady just audible out of such idiotic plays calls? I mean if everyone watching the game knew Leftwich was going to call 2 yard to the right and a cloud of dust on first down, then why didn’t TB12 just unload something: a slant to Evans, try a bomb or a screen; anything to get the Steelers off balance? Seems like the team expected to get a W just for showing up. Every year they do this: 2020 Chicago, last year DC, this year the 3-14/ make that 4-13 Steelers; now lets see if the Bucs rebound.
Mike Evans was neglected in the loss; how much you bet Brady targets him in Carolina on the first play on offense and how much you bet the Carolina defense will be expecting it as well so throw to someone else on the first play TB12. I agree that BA’s influence is sorely missed, hopefully the Glazers allow him to shove his foot somewhere to get the OC’s attention.

Well, at least we got to learn why Brady doesn’t sneak anymore: the OL can’t get 1 inch of penetration…
The Steelers spent the whole game rushing 4 and getting pressure, covering with 7. This is the first problem: our OL can’t pass protect or run block effectively. We did not have enough time to let long pass plays develop or space given their highly dense zones. This way we couldn’t challenge their inexperienced secondary.In these circumstances really good OCs draw imaginative plays and make adjustments to game plans to still get their offense going. Not BL… the only thing he knows to do in this situation is run run run…and that tells us all we need to know about his ability.
The Jaguars must be relieved they didn’t hire him watching this….

There is nothing wrong with ground-and-pound smashmouth. IF YOU HAVE THE TOOLS TO DO IT. And the creativity to make it work, including ADJUSTMENTS, and not being predictable and stupid about it. There is nothing better than to be able to impose your will with relentlless, clock-killing unstoppable, quarterback-saving smashmouth combined with shutdown defense. But this team is NOT equipped for either.
It’s time for a top to bottom reset.

Fans: Why won’t Brady QB sneak? He’s the greatest sneaker of all time. Brady knew that this interior OL can’t get enough push for a successful sneak. Why risk injury when you know your OL won’t get the push?

I didn’t want to see Trubisky again before yesterday. Hoping Pickett wouldn’t get hurt. Maybe Mitch will get in the hof after all. Disgusting game. If Leftwich doesn’t admit to an inexcusable failure on his part I hope he’s fired today. Not getting better if not

Spot on Joe, spot on.
The part I most agree on is Arians. This team looks uninspired and highly predictable through six games.
Two of the biggest absences, IMO, are Gronk and Suh. Each was a spark plug for their respective sides of the ball.
Lastly, and my own observation through six weeks, we are TERRIBLE in short yardage situations; 3rd and 1, etc..
How can that be? Are we that afraid of deploying a FB?
Games are won and loss in those situations. Pittsburgh converted when they needed to and we didn’t.

Joe, my son and I were at the Tennessee game. I remember thinking I was such a bad dad taking my then eight year old son to that debacle. Well, I didn’t learn my lesson because I took my son to that Chicago game you mentioned. It was the last weekend of baseball season and I thought it would be cool to catch a Cubs game and a Bucs game. Well, seeing the Cubs was fun, but the Bucs were god awful. I joked with my son that Winston would play after half time and throw a pick (to get it out of his system), and he did. The game yesterday was just another version of the same coaching malpractice I’ve seen in the past. Heck, when our first play yesterday was a run, my now 16 year old son looked at me and quipped, “didn’t see that coming.”

Man, i was fired up after the game. Unfortunately not because the Bucs rocked…
I still can´t believe that we didn´t stop them, after a bad snap and a 3rd and 16.
After that, we could have won, but only if Succop would have nailed a 75-yard fieldgoal (the way the offense performed…).
Think about it:
With just a few better plays, maybe just two succesful 2-pt conversions, we could be 5-1, or 4-1-1. (Lost with 2 against Steelers and Packers)
I don´t want to say = “settle down, it´s still a good season”, what i want to say = “Unbelievable after watching the last games, we should be far away from a winning record”

The Bills showed the Bucs how to blow up the Steelers the week before and we didn’t try any of it. Bowles run first offense needs to go out the window or trade your wide outs for a top tier Oline. We’re just wasting our receivers. Julio’s not hurt, he just doesn’t want to run sprints all game long.

Item #6: Licht never tried fixing the broken O Line
They could have signed JC Tretter, probably for peanuts,, and sent Hainsey to LG and perhaps found a vet to back up Hainsey if he wasn’t ready. But no, one bad QB finger, one bad QB shoulder, o
ineffective running games and two embarrassing losses later, the problem still remains an afterthought. But hey, let’s have some more happy talk on how good the LG and C are going to be someday, or how hard they work.

We won the SB in 2002 with a brillant GM, dynamic HC, sky was the limit, how long did that last? Here we are falling apart after winning it in 2020. Another year or two of bungling, the rebuild will begin with all new leaders.

Great article Joe, but it was missing 1 key actor: Jason Licht. This team is LOADED with older veterans who aren’t cutting it. Some are riding the pine; some others should be. We’ve become a geriatric squad, and the ARCHITECT of that is Jason Licht. He’s done a lot excellent drafting lately IMO, but that doesn’t mean he should get a pass for his FA acquisitions. The TEAM isn’t performing, and he’s the one responsible for acquiring the talent. JL hasn’t done anything since preseason to solidify some well-known weaknesses, and he’s just as accountable for that as the coaching is.

Joe, this was a fantastic article but most especially your points in the section on Bruce Arians. This is the Dirk Koetter years all over again and that’s including Jason Licht’s free agent signings. He missed on just about everyone. It’s like the JR Sweezy signing all over again but with several guys.
Bruce Arians needs to get back into the kitchen and start making biscuits.

Yes if you drop 7 and rush 4 the formula for success is to run, unless your oline can’t run block, then you adjust. BL doesn’t get the adjustment part. Dive left, dive right, off tackle left, off tackle right. WTF, what happened to the O game plan BL used in Dallas? So painful to watch when you know what’s coming EVERY play. Same with Bowles, how about you try something different on 3rd downs. These are the same problems for the last two seasons but the O averaged 30+ a game which compensated for the lack of 3rd down success. 2020 this team was hungry, now they get bored in the 4th quarter. Freaking premadonas and the coaches do NOTHING about it.

Also missing is player leadership. And in Brady’s case also presence.
I am disappointed Brady is not in Leftwich’s grill. I am disappointed Bowles went all “not my circus, not my monkeys” yesterday.
Terrible, unsprung, gutless game and plan.
If anyone needs to kick some ass, it’s the Glazers. This clown car will get seriously put if control quickly without their intervention.
That was indeed the worst Buc game I can remember since “Tennessee Ready.”

Well said, Joe. And JL is a necessary inclusion in this conversation, thanks DR. I know it is the norm to always give the entitled golden boy a pass, but let’s not forget the circus of distractions that is the face of the franchise, Tom Brady. Sure JW was a hot mess with crab-gate and crotch-gate, but Tommy has brought you… retire-gate, tamper-gate, vacation-gate, divorce-gate, wedding-gate, along with ambiguous-did-he-get-Bruce-fired, and the omnipresent look-at-me-quarter-of-a-billion-Fox-commentator-who-will-likely-be-the-most-bland-voice-you-ever-heard-on-tv-so-I-don’t- really-need-this-qb-gig (and it shows)

This underachieving team is a total dumpster fire. O line sucks, front 4 on defense can’t stop the run or get pressure. Coaching is aweful. Play calling is aweful. The supposed shutdown corner is nothing close to that. And Brady looks checked out. Season is a bust!

I have been around here a long time and have to agree! This is one of the best written articles I have ever read on JBF!
I had a funny feeling we would lose to the Steelers. WE can blame this or that but one fact remains, they flat out outplayed us.
Atlanta is really surging lately, so we must be really careful. Winning our division is no longer a given right.

“The bills showed the Bucs…..” – well here’s a lovely reality check, the Bucs aren’t the Bills. And if I have to read again that style points don’t matter. Oh my f’ing god. That is a COP OUT. Whether it’s the 80s 49ers, the 90s cowboys, the late 90s broncos, the 2000s patriots or colts – the GREAT TEAMS (which btw we are NOT) take teams like the Steelers and end their whole life by half time ok. Great teams are crisp, well coached, they execute, and they execute their opponent by halftime. You knew by halftime they’d be up 28-7, 24-10 or whatever against certain teams. The Bucs, with their alleged talent level, we should be expecting greatness, but it’s apparent that there is not one good to very good player on the defensive line. Soft and weak. The number 5 pick in the draft (lololol) Devin white – continually grades out as bad to very bad. The Bucs TRUE blue chip player on defense is Antoine Winfield, with Jamel Dean rounding in to maybe their second best player on defense with Lavonte. I do not like or even enjoy the identity of this football team and we are not anywhere near as talented as we like to think we are. I would say this is the most dysfunctional team Brady has ever been on by far, but he has caused some of it

Now I can appreciate how Bill Belichick coached Brady. I’m afraid Brady thinks his GOATness is all he needs, Tom vs Time, Let’s Go!, etc. Bill would explain to Tom in his sugary way that he was just a player, do your job, don’t screw up.

This team is soft. Mentally and physically. The special teams coach needs to be removed. Jarden needs to be benched. Leftwich demoted. Someone needs to scheme open wide receivers. YAC on this team doesn’t exist. We need someone to specifically scheme to stop 3rd and long.

As angry as I was yesterday,,,, and that FUMING & screaming at the TV…
If you think about it, we have had 1 of these each of the 3 years on the road.
2020 — a loss in Chicago to a bad Bears team
2021 — a loss in DC to a bad Washington team
2022 — this one — a loss in Pittsburgh to a bad Steelers team
I guess it’s not the end of the world, as we see it happen all over the league.
We just need get back on damn track, and play the way we are capable as a full unit.

Our offensive line sucks right now.
LT – below average and playing hurt
LG – one of the worst starting LGs in the NFL.
C – Below average
RG – barely average
RT – Solid
It all starts in the trenches. Ground and pound can work if your offensive line doesn’t suck… There is a missed assignment on every play.
Losing Cappa, Marpet and Jenson is what has really hurt this team more than anything else…
No replacement for Gronk and AB. Godwin and Gage playing injured.

My Momma say’s that with the way Goedeke and Hainsey were being beaten, Brady wasn’t able to do such a thing. Look at the film Joe! Even Smith, Wirfs and Mason all got into the act. But, it all starts with Goedeke getting pushed back into Brady’s face almost the whole game. Why do you think Brady went ballistic on the side lines? Did you see Brady chewing out Goedeke while he helped Brady off the turf?? Licht is the architect of this mess.
Somehow, Hall didn’t get the memo during the early stages of training camp to take it easy in before the pads went on, and pushes Stinnie into the back of Jensons knee. Stupid rookie. But that was on the coaches. Same happened to Stinnie when they were mixing and matching linemen around him during a preseason game, and gets taken out for the season. Again that’s on the coaches, and more damning evidence against Bowles. Why in the world would you not preserve a starter like Stinnie? You could say that he wasn’t, but looking at what they had, who else did the have that was better?? He did a good job at left guard last year filling in for Marpet, right? Did he not do a good job during the Super Bowl run?? Would he have been better that Goedeke? Bowles should have benched White in the first quarter…Two plays in a row …identical play and he goes grandstander going for the sack instead of doing his job. No accountability…It wasn’t just the PF play. In threeplay you could say he cost us 10 points!
