Stop Blaming Tom Brady

October 16th, 2022

Sorry, but Tom Brady at a wedding Friday night is not responsible for horrible special teams coverage, the Steelers converting 7-of-15 on third down with bad quarterbacks, and the Bucs’ league-worst, yards-per-carry average.

Joe realizes the national media is going wild with the report of Brady going to creepy Bob Kraft’s wedding in New York City on Friday and skipping the Bucs’ walk-through practice session on Saturday.

They’ll tell you that’s a key reason the Bucs were upset 20-18 by Pittsburgh this afternoon.

Even close Brady friend Michael Strahan was poking Brady on the FOX-TV halftime show, noting that if you miss that practice you better come out and play well. Terry Bradshaw was blasting Brady, saying he never would have considered such a thing during his Hall of Fame career.

Joe gets that Brady had a subpar day today, though he seemed sharper than most of the guys around him. And perhaps that’s the point, Brady is needed to raise the games of others during the week so they’re ready for gameday. Joe doesn’t buy it, but it’s a fair argument.

Joe wishes it was fair to blame Brady and his wedding jaunt for today’s loss. That would be much less troubling than the alternative — blaming a complete team and apparent leadership breakdown.

  1. Jack Sparrow Says:

Cole Beasly saw the offensive playbook and saw a lot of garbage prompting him to just retire.

  2. D-Rome Says:

Joe, Brady’s performance was a factor in today’s loss. You cannot deny this. His personal life is now a distraction.

  3. The Daily Coroner Says:

Tom Brady was not sharp period!

  4. Pete I Says:

He looks and plays like a guy who is getting divorced.

    Just doesn’t seem fully invested.

But plenty of blame to go around that is for sure.

  5. HC Grover Says:

nobody is blaming brady they are blaming bowles and co

  6. Leighroy Says:

Joe your argument is flawed, bc you’re only focusing on todays game. Brady has yet to look sharp all season. He’s missed reads, checked the ball down too early, and just straight miss-fired too many times ALL SEASON.

To argue that his absence wasn’t a problem misses the fact that Brady is leading with a ‘do as I say, not as I do’ style of leadership. Your status means nothing any given Sunday, results in the moment matter today. They’re lacking.

  7. HC Grover Says:

    lol stop blaming bowles

  8. BucsBro Says:

Brady going to the wedding means nothing about how he played today.

Brady didn’t play up to par, even though his receivers were part of that issue.

If you get pressure on Brady early, you can rattle him and make him speed up his internal clock. Then he rushes throws he doesn’t need to rush.

That happened today. One example was a duck that was way off target to Godwin from only like 7 yards away. That was Brady rushing because he got hit early.

This isn’t new for Brady. He’s always been like this. Missing the walk through doesn’t matter, his age doesn’t matter. If you protect him and he feels comfortable early in a game, he won’t do this.

That said, he’s still not comfortable with all his receivers. And the Gage drop won’t help on that.

Just have to keep working through it.

Ignore the Brady haters. They can’t wait to get rid of him, but he’s not the problem.

  9. John Mason Says:

Joe ….You have to admit it is not a good look….almost like Brady

not taking the Steelers serious…..this team has really not looked

right all season….still time to fix it by they better get on the stick!

  10. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Brady certainly wasn’t at his best…..but our poor game plan…..and soft defense late…..were the causes of our loss…

We should have exploited their secondary early & often…..but we continued with our sluggish, impotent running game.

  11. T REX Says:

    He is NOT all in.

    Brady is partially to blame

  12. BobbyD Says:

Boles needs to go away. Far away. His defense is NO defense that can win in the NFL.

  13. Davenport Says:

Does anyone really think that Brady being out of a walk-through made any difference at all? This is the same effort that we have seen from this team for 6 games. Bruce knew what to do with Brady and they were an offensive machine.

BL is the evidence that keeps Bienemy from getting a HC job – both of those guys carried the clipboard for a genius. They are nothing without him.

  14. PassingThru Says:

No, Brady should not have gone to that wedding. I am sure Belichick didn’t bother attending either as he had bigger fish to fry.

Brady isn’t the reason the team lost but it was a bad look.

  15. Avejoe85 Says:

Brady has not been good all year. Make excuses all you want, but the fact is, is that all this missed time is the reason he doesn’t look good. Throw into the fact that Todd Bowles and Byron Leftwich just aren’t good coaches, and you have a crappy season. They should have insisted that Brady stay retired and started the rebuilding process.

  16. Miller5252 Says:

This lands on the coaches and their stupid play calling. Enough already of playing conservative offense. You got weapons all over, time to use them. Oh, have Brady call Gronk and offer him $15 million for the rest of the year as well. Time to get this team back to the BA philosophy of playing.

  17. DBS Says:

Say what you want. But when the ball is on the 1 and the same idiot calls an up the gut play that NEVER works? That is not Brady. Him getting laid out in the red zone? OL. He got them down the field. Just the same BS calls and OL screw ups.
Why did they not go with the play that has been working. Lenny to the outside pass to the right?

  18. Vance Says:

Brady threw most of his balls in the dirt today. Guess that’s not him…
But this falls directly on Bowles and Leftwich. Pitt down 6 or 7 starters on D and don’t attack it. And Ol’ Mitch converts 3….. 3 3rd and longs on you. To win the game. F OUTTA HERE!

  19. Ash Says:

The blame goes everywhere coaching and players gameplan all of it.

  20. jb Says:

STFU Joe! We can blame Whomever the hell we want.

  21. Craig Says:

No, I will not stop blaming Brady. He has been distracted all season, took a couple weeks of camp off, and skipped the walk through for this game.

If he can get all of that for being Tom Brady, he can, at least, give us Tom Brady-like games. When that happens I will quit blaming him.

  22. Bucsfan13 Says:

It was a walk through. It wasn’t practice!! He was a full participant all week. Walk throughs are very brief.

  23. NowimDRUNKERinYbor Says:

If my girlfriend knows can predict what we will call on offense. We are I’m big trouble. This crap reminds me of the old days. When we would force good players to do the toes on the line my way philosophy crap.

  24. CrackWise Says:

    NO, Blame the WISEGUYS.

This game has fallen victim to gamblers just like all of the grate games before it.

    It’s SO OBVIOUS NOW!!!

    Next Fools League

I look forward to finding a NEW sport that is not corrupt. I am thinking Corn Hole is where it is at.

    F the BS “entertainment” leagues!!!

  25. Francisco Guzman Says:

The bucs would never fire todd bowles. As long as Bowles remains the coach this team won’t be going far. Also BL needs some heat put on him. Either way the bucs are not change the coaching staff so expect the same inconsistent play and no accountability.

  26. ModHairKen Says:

Pathetic effort. After a pathetic effort against ATL. After a pathetic effort against KC. After a pathetic effort against GB.

Is it Bowles? Is it injuries? Is it Leftwich? Is it Brady?

Who cares. Bowles is responsible. He has not done Jack Ship. At least Arians would rip people. Bowles is feckless.

  27. JimmyJack Says:

Say what you will but Tom had quite a few bad throws. Last week too. He is struggling. He does deserve some of the blame. Best of all time but not above critism

  28. Bucsfan13 Says:

Brady had pressure in his face all day. That’s why he threw it away. We need a change at LG. Goedeke is a damn liability.

  29. The Beer Whisperer Says:

    This is what I think;

  30. jehzsa Says:

I hear a gameball was awarded today…to The Pigeons.

They valiantly picked, and pecked, and did not get stepped on.

There are some serious coaching issues with this team….

  31. Thisisouryear!! Says:

I think there’s a lot going on here. We miss the defensive leadership of JPP and Suh. White is now the team leader and I don’t think he’s good enough to be the defensive leader. On offense, there’s no way TB divorce isn’t affecting him. This team just doesn’t have the chemistry right now.

  32. Kody Says:

THE ENTIRE TEAM IS PLAYING TERRIBLE

    THE COACHING IS HORRIBLE

    THE SEASON IS DOOMED

But, yeah, I’m still a fan. I’m just a fan who can face facts.

  33. CrackWise Says:

And BTW, we can’t blame a CAT 5 hurricane on the team not being prepared but we can Blame a wedding as being a distraction?

    WTFE!!!

The Game has changed. It’s now being run by WISEGUYS!!!

Anyone remember the movie “The Last Boy Scout”.

  34. Iamabuc Says:

Well my take is that Brady taking all those off days is getting to the players…not enough quemistry and is showing. Also noticed, the players are not giving it all for him anymore. Specially if Brady keep screaming at them after missing all the practices, they’re like; Wtf, dude!!
I’m telling you it does affect their performance seeing the Goat not totally in it.

  35. Bucs Fan Since ‘76 Says:

Brady is playing better than both Elway and Manning in their final seasons, both ending in Super Bowl wins. The difference is both teams had excellent running games, solid defenses, and the same HC from the year before. We are missing two out of those three. BL’s game plan was horrible today, and his play calling was even worse.

Still, we had a chance to win with the Steelers backed up on third and long, and for some reason, Bowles, the most prolific Blitz caller in the NFL, did not send the house.

Hell, Barry Switzer was smart enough not to impose his philosophy on the Cowboys after JJ’s departure, and he won a Super Bowl. No risk it, no biscuit, worked. Why have we abandoned that attacking style. Easy to say it’s Bowles’s ego, but I think it may go deeper. Brady seemed to embrace the new approach before the season, and the evidence suggests he’s still all in. Why? Brady certainly has the discretion to check out of these terrible run calls, but he’s not doing it. Why?

A cynic might say he’s just trying to preserve his health and get through this season without getting killed. Something just ain’t right.

  36. Kgh4life Says:

Bowles has to make a change on the offensive side of the ball, too much talent to consistently struggle like that. Can’t be doing the same thing and expect a different result.

  37. Francisco Guzman Says:

This is not on brady. I wanna see the game film to see if any wideouts where getting open.

  38. Kentucky Buc Says:

The offense can’t get into any kind of rhythm. Brady’s a rhythm QB. Always has been. The disjointed play calling is atrocious. There were obvious play action opportunities that never got exploited. I fully believe that this conservative garbage is coming straight from Bowles. All he could talk about was not being able to make 3rd and short. He has no clue that wasting those first downs constantly gives you one shot at it. First down run for -4 to 2 yards. Second down pass for 7-9 yards . Third down up the gut for 0. How many times.

  39. Love them Bucs Says:

Interesting thing to see is how Brady responds to being criticized for being mediocre. Guys like him and Michael Jordan can’t do that, and Brady won’t retire as a mediocre. Drama doesn’t matter. The facts were there he got outplayed by Pittsburgh QBs, couldn’t throw on a 1-4 team with an entire injured secondary. Missed receivers over 5 times and kept throwing to underneath guys on 3 rd down rather than pass 3 yards further for 1st downs. Put the drama aside, can he get that ultra competitive thing that makes him the GOAT. The only thing he has never had to face and , was his own poor play. We win or lose with the GOAt.

  40. jb Says:

Agree with lamabuc. You could see it in the faces of the O-line while he was screaming at them. Dude is losing his influence fast, No Matter how much Joe Huffs an Puffs and deletes posts.

  41. BucU Says:

This team COLLECTIVELY sucks. Not just him or him or him. This offensive line is just bad. The drop off from Jensen, Marpet and Cappa is painfully obvious. And this defense? In a word…Putrid.
I don’t wanna hear any post game press conferences this week.
Their words mean nothing to me after this epic embarrassment.

  42. Kody Says:

Cole Beasly obviously saw how massively dysfunctional the Bucs are. Just so poorly coached with no offensive or defensive coordination at all. And escaped the nightmare right away. Good on you, Cole. Say hi to Gronk for us.

  43. Rod Munch Says:

Bowles playing soft zone on 3rd and long is to defense what Leftwich running up the middle on 1st down is to offense.

  44. Kentucky Buc Says:

This is not an accident. This is Bowles influence on the offense. Yes BL deserves blame too but when are of you so called reporters going to ask Bowles if the conservative approach is coming from him.

  45. AMI_Chris Says:

If you are going to go off campus on Friday night, you’d better play great on Sunday. Brady didn’t. That said, I fail to understand how an OC can’t manage to scheme open Evans, Godwin or Gage once in a while. These guys are covered like blankets when they get a target.

  46. Bucsfan13 Says:

His finger has also been wrapped up. Ask about the finger and shoulder.

  47. Kody Says:

LET BRADY MAKE MAKE ALL THE PLAY CALLS AND GO TO A HURRY UP OFFENSE FROM THE VERY FIRST POSSESSION. MIGHT BE THE ONLY SHOT WE HAVE OF GETTING A TD IN A 1ST QUARTER ALL SEASON.

  48. DungyDance Says:

Joe, put down your Bromosa and get with the program. Tom Brady is the leader of this team. Sorry, but leaders don’t skip out on team functions right before a game so they can go play reindeer games with their pals. He failed the team this week. It is absolutely his fault.

  49. LakelandSteve Says:

So who do you think we should take with our first round pick next year? Too soon?

  50. beano Says:

We’re not winning this season. Release Brady, play Trask. He outperformed both Goobert and Brady in the last preseason game (playing with truck drivers) and deserves it. If he had more melanin he would have played already.

  51. Rod Munch Says:

Leftwich is such a POS and a terrible coach I literally wouldn’t be shocked if Brady retired this week and went back to his wife. Hopefully Brady gives the Glazers a call first so they could fire Leftwich instead.

I mean we’re down to the point that the Bucs would be in much better shape with QB coach Clyde Christensen calling plays – the guy so bad that when he was OC he got Dungy ran out of town. That’s how bad Leftwich is, that Clyde would be a huge upgrade.

  52. Yucs2Bucs Says:

Why not Joe ? He’s not all in and also his shoulder is extremely jacked up !!! He couldn’t take Bruce, but dealt with BB for years ?? Seriously and on top of that not one person on defense is a leader or playing well

  53. FrontFour Says:

Hey Joe – stop covering for Brady. He played like crap today. He makes the final decision where to go with the ball. He missed guys. Threw in the dirt. He’s clearly not all in this year. Could care less about his personal life. We all have them and need to show up for work every day. He’s the team leader and it’s not showing. It’s easy to dump on the rookies, but risk your locker room pass and call out Vita Vea, Shaq Barrett, JTS, LVD, Leftwhich. the D crumbled downb the strectch but still held Pitt to 20 points. The “GOAT” scored 18 points with the “deepest WR in the history of football”. Call him out.

  54. orlbucfan Says:

Really? Why not? He was a big reason why we lost. 2020 Bucs would have won the SB that year with a competent QB and no Gronkowski. I am going to be soooo glad when the fossil is gone, and I can finally read about the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.

  55. Alstott up the gut Says:

The inability to hold on numerous 3rd downs and I’m done with Darden returning kicks 4 feet before diving into a defender…. But optics show me that Tom Brady is not the person we expect. He never smiles, his leadership (on camera at least) is only to yell at players and he misses wide open targets! Yes Godwin was wide open in the middle on that 3rd down and Brady missed him! He seems checked out and for a guy that instilled the motto of full commitment, this is tough to watch!

  56. Rod Munch Says:

orlbucfan — you’re literally more retarded than Leftwich, and that is saying something. Do the world a favor and go run over your head with a lawnmower, it will help oxygenate your brain and increase your mental capacity, I swear.

  57. Bradinator Says:

He doesn’t get a pass from me. He was Charlie Check Down all day. He didn’t go long at all, and his passing was very subpar. It is not a stretch to say he got outplayed by Mitch Trubisky. He did not get the job done. It was obvious he wasn’t fully vested in this game early on. He got better, but it was too late, and not enough. If you don’t play good, you should get told so.

  58. Coburn Says:

End of day one of biggest reasons we lost was our coaches were too inept to call a timeout when our defense was panicking trying to get guys subbed and lined up and surprise surprised they weren’t ready when it was snapped

  59. rrsrq Says:

The defense outside of the Chiefs game has not given up more than 20, the offense has barely scratched 20 in any games this year

  60. Oneilbuc Says:

    Orlbucfan
I’m with you bro Brady is 45 years old and the media has been lieing to these people for a while now and it’s easier to believe a lie than the truth because the truth hurts. Now Brady didn’t play that bad but he needs a all star team around him now days. It’s time to move on after this year and I also knew that BL and Bowles would be the scapegoats this year. When we won in 2020 it was because Brady was calling his own plays and it BL didn’t get any credit for those play calls. Now it’s BL fault only when Brady is not throwing for 350 and 4 touchdowns. I can’t wait until Brady is gone so we can give credit or blame the team it self for not winning and that includes coaching as well. But for right now it’s never Brady’s fault regardless how he played. Because they are saling us Brady to make money.

  61. Ultra ClodHopper Says:

Don’t blame the quarterback for the quarterback playing poorly? What is this 2018?

  62. Lamarcus Says:

So the Defense has to be lights out because Brady missed practice. With that logic…. We should be 1-5

  63. ChiBuc Says:

Joe, get your head out of Tommy’s a$$. Brady has been a major distraction since Cooper Kupp killed our hopes last year. You cannot continue to have the leader of your team selfishly blow off his team for his personal drama and bs. Then he turns around and stomps his feet and points his finger at them on game day. Leaders lead. They set the tone, establish a work ethic, build chemistry, they audible out of first down runs… they don’t court another team (fins), quit then return to spite their wives, go on vacation during training camp, chase post careers as Fox announcers, etc, etc. The wedding is just the cherry on this $h!t shake. If you give him the glory for wins, then…

  64. orlbucfan Says:

Hey Rod Munch, you’re more retarded than I am. Did you watch the first Buc series where St. Fossil missed a wide open Cam Brate down the middle on 2nd and 3rd down? Obviously not. You yahoo idiot. At least you’re halfway legible in your comments.

  65. Cobraboy Says:

Brady is not the sole problem.

But he is, by far, the #1 leader.

If I can see his lack of commitment and lazy attitude, you KNOW his teammates do also.

If Brady is tired of the playcalling and has NOT had a Come to Jesus with Leftwich, Bowles, and Arians, that’s on him.

  66. Cobraboy Says:

It is clear at this point Brady’s personal life is more important than his commitment to the Bucs.

  67. Dlavid Says:

Brady has checked out this year ! He has not given this team the leadership or effort they need from him .

  68. Cobraboy Says:

I agree with Iamabuc. The players know Brady’s not committed. Why should they?

It’s a sad closure to a disappointing year.

    Thanks, Gissell, you ^$&#…

  69. BelleGladeBuc Says:

Those of us on this site who BEGGED the Bucs to get a legitimate guard and center after Jensen and Stinnie were injured for the season were laughed at.

We said losing Marpet, Jensen and Stinnie would cause the OLINE to become a weakness with a 45 year old QB to protect.

    We were right.

Goedeke is a project who got destroyed today by the Steelers. Aaron Donald will line up right over top of him and own him.

Hainsey needs to look between his legs routinely to locate his target. That’s not a high caliber NFL center.

Aaron Donald will shoot that A gap a destroy Goedeke and Hainsey on his way to burying TB12.

OLINE isn’t as glitzy as Gronk or a high profile WR, but they are more important than Gronk or a WR when it comes to protecting 45 year old TB12 with two unproven players who are clearly not ready.

Do you think this OLINE can block the Rams front, the Eagles front or the 49er’s front?

We’re in trouble. Who’s laughing at us who said that the OLINE was a weakness after the injuries in the preseason and retirements now?

  70. David Says:

Sorry this is absolute garbage. The fault lies on the o line, the receivers not getting open, the running backs not being able to run the ball, BL not calling the best games, Brady looking to dump the ball off within a yard of the line of scrimmage 40% of the time he drops back.
    It’s all of their fault!!

Brady missing training camp and flying off to a wedding and being distracted with the divorce is to blame also.
So to say he has no blame is absolute garbage, he has a lot of blame. I don’t care what his stats say, he has not played well. You can tell that simply by watching the game.

  71. Pewter Power Says:

He earned that criticism and yes he did have to play well. Everyone will mention that wedding in the national media because has to be some blame for this L. He made himself a target

  72. Tackleblockwin Says:

It is most definitely partially his fault. He looks uninterested and has off field issues. He is also missing easy throws over and over every week.

  73. Oneilbuc Says:

Man Brady is 45 years old why do y’all think he’s 25 ?? He supposed to be missing throws at that age. Just be honest the media told y’all he ain’t declined but I saw his decline in 2018 super bowl against the Rams that year and he haven’t been the same. In 2020 they put a all star team around him that covered a lot of his decline with those receivers and now they are gone. But look he’s playing with the same team Jameis had and you see the same results other than having better running backs than Jamies had. I told y’all in 2019 no quarterback would have won with that team.

  74. JSmalls Says:

It’s so interesting how Brady all the sudden seems to have no input on the offensive game plan. This is as much Brady’s offense as it is Byron’s unless he’s uninterested if the formulation of it.

  75. Ab Says:

It’s not about his absence being the ‘cause’..

Would tom have done it 10 years ago? 5 years ago? Even 3 years ago? Hell no!

Part of the appeal of Tom as a leader was no matter how accomplished, he bristled at the idea of not being exactly like everyone else. 100% commitment – the embodiment of that 6th round draft pick with the chip on his shoulder.

I’m sorry, what he did this weekend is prima donna stuff – and just speaks to how his mentality this season is different. It wasn’t the cause but it was another manifestation of a less than all-in-mentality (that the rest of the team sees, btw) that IS part of what’s wrong.

Oh, and btw, you are still going to get on your high horse and berate newbie O-linemen that were unexpectedly thrust into starting roles prematurely and are working their asses off to protect your frail and barely mobile body so that you can bullet another dirtball on 3rd down? I’d say go F yourself! Lol

  76. JSmalls Says:

It’s no surprise that the QB in Denver with his own personal office is floundering. What we’re seeing is what Tom Brady’s career would’ve looked like if he approached the game like Jamar Russel.

  77. LongSeason Says:

Brady is half in half out mentally. He either needs to be all in or it is time to retire. I would prefer he step away before the embarrassment gets worse. He’s brought us two great seasons and a Super Bowl. We need to learn to live and play without him.
Not all is his fault, but he’s not getting chemistry with the new pieces on offense. The defense did a great thing until the Bucs offense wore them out, again.
Steelers defense was the movable object and the Bucs offense was the resistible force. Bucs offense is still resistible.

  78. bob Says:

every once in a while it would be nice for another Buc to make a play on offense… where a pass doesn’t have to perfect from Brady…just make a play….a great catch…..I see it all day from other teams……just make a play

  79. LongSeason Says:

Brady been hitting the dirt with his passes too much lately. Bounce passes are only legit in Basketbrawl.

  80. Bucsfan951 Says:

O’Neil, that type of dude that puts down people for hating JW but hates on Brady most opportunities he gets. It’s like as if (and he said the same thing with JW) he wants the team to lose to get that “I told you so” in. Pathetic either way!

  81. Oneilbuc Says:

Bucs51 . Don’t be mad bro Brady is 45 years old so how is that hating on Brady ? You thought he was the player when he was 28 because he threw a lot of screen passes and crossing routes in the middle of the field and now other teams has caught on to him now. Now I still believe we going to the playoffs so that’s why I ain’t tripping about this lost like y’all are. After they crush the Panthers than everyone will be happy. And all of that I told you so talk don’t mean nothing to me. I know what I saw his last 2 years in New England he needs a all star cast now to be a average or above average quarterback.

  82. jstokes84@yahoo.com Says:

What we witnessed yesterday was bad. You can say Brady is the goat and he has 7 super bowl rings. However you can’t not say Tom played good at all today. You have to hold him accountable as well as the others yesterday. I get everyone wants to say Bowles let Brady go to a wedding. My question to you all was that his call or did ownership say he could do it. I honestly think if BA was coaching he still does it but BA would have called him out at the post game press conference. Lets not forget how many dirt balls Brady has been throwing lately.

  83. King C Says:

We’ve seen this before in the last two years of Dan Marino.

  84. Brandon Says:

It’s as much Brady’s fault as Leftwich… especially considering this is the same slant, drag, hitch, hook, shallow cross dink and dunk offense Tom ran in New England. Brady is involved in the offensive game planning and has final say on what play is called… until he steps it up, his GOAT ego has surpassed his GOAT skills. To me, that’s his biggest obstacle since he’s been a Buc… his ego.

  85. garro Says:

No accountability and complete lack of leadership from Bowles on down to the team captains. Yes that includes you Tom. Krafts wedding in the middle of a season Bad Look dude. Thats piss poor leadership as well.
Bowles should have benched White in the first quarter…Two plays in a row …identical play and he goes grandstander going for the sack instead of doing his job. No accountability…
