A Great 2022 Start For Kyle Trask

October 13th, 2022

Kyle Trask

Whatever is happening behind the scenes with Bucs’ third-string quarterback Kyle Trask, the happenings in plain sight also are very critical to the future of Tampa Bay’s 2021 second-round draft pick.

Therefore, Joe thinks Trask’s season is off to a strong start.

Rookie QB Bailey Zappe, a fourth-round pick, has had two very solid outings for the Patriots. And undrafted Cooper Rush has been dazzling in Dallas with four wins as a starting quarterback after four years on the bench.

When owners are thinking about their next quarterback, you don’t want to be a young QB in an offseason when the trend is getting to the playoffs with established veteran free agents. That’s the way it’s been the past two years, but that trend may be dissolving.

Via that logic, Joe thinks it also helps Trask’s future prospects that Matt Ryan and Russell Wilson are struggling with their new teams and Carson Wentz is bombing in Washington. And it doesn’t hurt that the New York teams are revived with young QBs. (When’s the last time the Giants and Jets had winning records after Week 5?)

Owners often are all about the hot NFL trends. And if Tom Brady leaves after this season, it’s certainly in Trask’s best interest to be under consideration after a season not dominated by veteran QBs.

Joe knows a few Trask fans who are hoping Falcons rookie QB Desmond Ritter, a third-round pick, starts later this season and plays well.

It’s only five weeks into the season, but Trask’s arrow is pointing up, even if he can’t yet beat out Blain Glabbert for the No. 2 backup gig.

oh yes, lots of excitement over a non mobile, statue QB in 2022 !!

Wins are not a QB stat. I question anyone’s football IQ who thinks differently.

Tom Brady will be our QB when Trask’s rookie contract ends….

  5. 1sparkybuc Says:

Fans used to support anyone who wore the team uniform. Not anymore. Now third string players are the enemy.

  6. #8 Says:

Still irritated at the Trask pick. They were not all in for 2021.
Jury still out if all in for 2022.
    Suh.

  7. sasquatch Says:

This article makes no sense. The success of other young QBs and lack of success for some vets has nothing to do with whether Trask will be able to become a good starter for this franchise. It has a lot to do with whether he gets a chance.–Joe He’s improved, but his arm still is only average and he doesn’t move well. I don’t see a big future for him, and I fail to see how Bailey Zapp or Cooper Rush mean Trask’s needle is pointing up. I mean, maybe he’s still developing, but it’s unrelated to the other QBs. I don’t understand Joe’s “reasoning” sometimes. You can’t project a trend to an individual.

  8. CChead Says:

Trask would not be catching so much shade if he came from a school outside of FL.

  9. Alanbucsfan Says:

If Trask were a mobile QB, maybe he’d have a future as a starter- as it is now, he’ll probably be on someone’s practice squad when his rookie contract is up.

  10. Thomas Edrington Says:

    Come on Joe(s) — you’re better than this………

  11. sasquatch Says:

It has a lot to do with whether he gets a chance.–Joe

I don’t think they make decisions that way. I think they look at his practice and preseason performance, as well as his continued mastery of the offense. Only those factors will make the decision whether he becomes a starter after Brady leaves.

I think what you’re identifying isn’t a trend so much as a series of coincidences.

  12. Duane Says:

Nope. He wasnt even a door no.3 option this year. Brady’s replacement is currently not on this roster. The team is going to make a move for a big name when it is time. You dont hand the reins of a stacked roster to the second coming of Mike Glennon.

  13. A Bucs Fan Says:

@Sasquatch- then you’ve never played in the NFL or had anyone close to you play in the NFL. There’s tons of who you know, draft status and straight up nepotism that takes place over a players actual ability on the football field.

  14. Kentucky Buc Says:

Somebody has a lot of free time on their hands

  15. Bucs since 76 Says:

Until Trask starts a regular season game there is no way to know if he is a starting NFL quarterback. John McCay once said after starting Doug Williams as a rookie that QB’s don’t learn nothing on the sideline but how to drink kool aid.

  16. adam from ny Says:

    kyle flask…

he doesn’t play, so why not tuck a flask of jack in those yoga pants that the nfl makes the players wear nowadays

  17. Runstuffer Says:

Did Trask’s agent ask you to write this post?

  18. Whoolio? Says:

For the first time this year I feel an extension for Brady and additional years at the end to spread out cap room to create space for gronk, and possibly OBJ or maybe Diontae Johnson.

  19. Will Says:

I guess I’m old I love the idea of NOT throwing a young QB in there and giving him time on the bench to learn the system and study how to be a pro behind a vet. I’m hoping that when Brady hangs it up that Trask has developed and will be our starter for years.

  20. geno711 Says:

I am with sasquatch on this one and not with this Joe at all.

That being said, I am not sure that you have to be mobile to be successful in this league for anyone suggesting that.

I think the biggest thing for QB’s is that processing time between the helmet.

I would love for executive Bruce Arians to be spending all his free time talking and reviewing film with Trask.

  21. Whoolio? Says:

Diontae Johnson would be a much better addition than OBJ but doubt steelers would let go of him for anything less than a 2nd rd pick or even at all.

  22. Whoolio? Says:

I feel a Brady extension coming and spreading out cap room for Gronk and maybe OBJ/Diontae Johnson/Moore/Lockett. Many names probably aren’t actually available but would be great additions from possible sellers.

  23. DC Says:

How many qbs drafted in the 2nd 3rd round that never got a jersey on gamedays turned out to be good? LMAO. Look im rooting for trask but lets be realistic the chances are slim and none that he ever plays a meaningful snap. Not even counting actually being good.

  24. OMFS88 Says:

@Sasquatch & geno711 the NFL is a copy-cat league to a tremendous degree. Joe’s probably spot on here

I don’t doubt it, but I still don’t see how those other players’ performances have anything to do with whether they decide to give Trask a chance to start. I mean, other than informing them about which players they should avoid as possible free agent options.

I have doubts about Trask, and I would hope our coaches’ decision would be based on his own ability and evidence that he could do the job. I saw enough in preseason to feel somewhat encouraged, but not anywhere near enough to think he’s the future.

  26. SlyPirate Says:

IDK where Cameron Ward gets drafted but that guy can play. I’d be all for taking a chance on the WSU product if he falls in the draft.

  27. Beeej Says:

Joe Burrow is non mobile qb

  28. Whoolio? Says:

Also really? Talking up Kyle Trash? Dude was mediocre at Florida and I’m a Gators fan who watches every game. He’s slow, has slow reads, and is not even good moving in the pocket. Shouldn’t we look for a QB who has the potential of taking us somewhere? Tom Brady types are not the future of this league and Trash is not even comparable to that. Now, Richardson has that potential and with some polishing and another year in college could be a mix of Mahomes and Lamar Jackson but we will never get him in the late 1st rd.

  29. Buc1987 Says:

Beeej …he also takes a good beating every Sunday too.

  30. Whoolio? Says:

Kyle Trash is not Joe Burrow. Joe Burrow has fire and drive like Brady. He has that xfactor that could make him the exception. He also has actual talent.

  31. Joe Says:

    Very good point.

Sunday will make it 1 1/3 seasons (25 games) that Trask still hasn’t worn a Bucs game uniform.

  32. HC Grover Says:

I dont think Trask is going to make it

  33. Oneilbuc Says:

It’s time to move on from Brady he’s playing like a old man now. He needs a all star cast on offense to look average or above average. Yall need to move on from Brady after this year. The bucs must move on or get left behind the rest of the teams in the NFL. I look at Copper Rush and I see a way to be susessful with Trask. Cooper Rush is a proven fact what I’ve been saying for the longest. A quarterback don’t have to throw 45 times for a team to win. Defense and a running game you can win .

  34. ocala Says:

Trask should be the Bucs starter if the team is planning on a complete rebuild and attempting to get the number one pick in the draft.

If Trask is the starter the Bucs should look at trading away a lot of their top talent, get right with the salary cap and obtain a ton of draft capital.

  35. Dooley Says:

I still think we’ll draft a QB next spring if Brady retires, and that’ll be even more likely if Gabbert isn’t brought back either. Also not outside of the realm of possibility that whatever scout we send to watch UDub has an eye on Penix Jr., we’ve also drafted from Kentucky in our recent draft history so could be possible we’ve got an eye on Levis, and I’m hoping we’ve got a scout watching KJ Jefferson at Arkansas.

  36. CrackWise Says:

Yall do know he is running our scout team right now right?

So he is getting plenty of reps against a very good D.

Oh, and the last two SBs were won by mobile QBs right?

    Just saying.

  37. Beeej Says:

    “Buc1987 Says:

Beeej …he also takes a good beating every Sunday too”

Fair point, I don’t know how long he holds onto the ball tho, else does their line suck (it most definitely did last year)

  38. Redeemer Says:

Zappe and Rush haven’t been asked to do much. They are placeholders. Like Trask, they are both quite limited. If Trask starts next year, the bucs would be lucky to go 7-10. It was a mistake to draft him when they did.

  39. SKBucsFan Says:

We had a mobile QB a few seasons ago. That was an epic failure. Was not fun watching him run around and throw picks.
Give me a good O-line and a pocket passer any day.

  40. firethecannons Says:

we need to do better, kyle Trask is not adequate. We have Chris Godwin and mike Evans and they need better. There might be some hidden gems in the 2023 draft that are in reach.

  41. Mike Says:

I think Trask is the future backup QB for the Bucs, unless he just blows up during the offseason.

  42. BuckyDent Says:

Lamar is going – bring him in!

  43. BigPoppaBuc Says:

There are two guys… Kyle Pitts and Kadarius Toney. Those guys were electric at UF and unanimously seen as top NFL prospects. Those two are really struggling to be as impactful at this level. Maybe…just maybe Trask had more to do with them shining at Florida than he’s been given credit for.
Fir some reason Trask is a touchy subject on this site, but him panning out as a winning NFL QB could put the Bucs in dynasty mode.

  44. ocala Says:

Trask is not a touchy subject, but he is not good enough to be a backup QB according to the Bucs coaches. So, it is bizarre to even consider him as an option as a starting QB in the NFL when he cannot even make it as a #2.

  45. Oneilbuc Says:

One thing I do know most of the people on here can’t see pass Brady and they don’t want to see nothing pass Brady. But again I don’t blame the quarterbacks that the bucs draft because they never developed a quarterback. So to act like they know what it takes to develope a quarterback is crazy because they don’t have a clue knowing what it takes to develop a quarterback.

  46. Goatfarmer Says:

There’s a difference. These other dudes are actually playing and doing well. Trask can’t even thrive against waitresses and bartenders in preseason, let alone get ahead of Blaine “Watch Daddy Sling It” Goobert.

  47. Dooley Says:

    @ocala

Trask IS a backup QB lol he’s just 3rd and not 2nd to Brady, which in large part is decided by the difference in experience between Year 2 Trask and Year 10 Gabbert more than it is potential or talent right now. It’s really not hard to figure that out and its’ proof seniority/tenured experience is favored over potential in the NFL, who knew?

It’s like hiring a reputable & tenured contractor to come out to do a job on your house, but he/she sends his apprentice, wouldn’t you be a tad concerned with the quality of work you’d be getting from somebody who isn’t as experienced as the guy who’s name is on the work vehicle? Or having the barber who’s chair is right next to the entrance? Some will get that last one, other will not

  48. Cho Says:

I hope Trask gets his shot eventually. I also hope they are really developing him behind the scenes. With the team we’re slated to have next year, we don’t need something out of the ordinary from him. Get rid of the ball fast, avoid mistakes and be accurate on short and medium throws. Basically, learn from Brady and try to imitate, for the first few years, the basis of his game until he is able to throw deep consistently, manipulate defenses and shine in the clutch.

  49. Red86 Says:

Just because a qb isn’t drafted in the first round and are benched doesn’t mean they are bust. There are plenty of decent to great qbs that wasn’t a sexy 1st rounder to play in the nfl. We have Brady who was benched and a 6th rounder. Aaron Rodgers was benched. Pat Mahome was benched. Kurt Warner wasn’t drafted and of course benched. Tony Romo was decent and not a first rounder. There are several qbs and players that doesn’t workout well as a 1st rounder.

Trask looked solid in this year preseason. He made a lot of good reads and was rather accurate. I like how he developed so far. He could be a good game manager type qb in first few years of starting, then potentially blossom into something special.

I’m a little cautious about signing big named qbs. Many have this in common. “They lack weapons.” Their big contract and ego destroy there opportunities to have a well rounded team. Brady is successful because of never being the highest paid qb. It’s why the Patriots became a dynasty.

    I dislike the Gators.

  50. lambchop Says:

I agree with @sasquatch on this one. This is correlation without causation. First of all, you need a QB willing to put the work into film study, he should be smart, he should have an arm. Trask definitely has accuracy, but the playbook we install for him and all the other pieces around him will dictate his success. It doesn’t matter what’s happening on other teams. They have systems in place and each QB is independent of each other as well as their system.

I highly doubt people are going to give a backup the job just because a bunch of young QBs are starting. His evaluation will dictate whether the Bucs think he has a shot. And he will get a shot if the price is right and the timing is right. But, his performance and evaluation will dictate how much rope they give him to falter before making a change. A coaching change could also alter his opportunity here.

  51. geno711 Says:

Yea, I am not a Trask fan other than he was taken by the Bucs so I hope that he works out.

Again, not sure there is any correlation between Cooper Rush and Trask turning out being a good player. I guess the history on Trask has been that he starts out slowly and then as time goes on becomes a better QB.

Hoping that the two years being an understudy here have equated to him being a good quarterback by the time that the Bucs might be looking to start him.

Not every QB has to be a Justin Herbert (my favorite) non-Buc QB.

Some QBs who are a little older can make it like Kurt Warner, Warren Moon, Rich Gannon, and Tony Romo. Those guys were older than Trask is now and turned in good careers in the NFL.

@Sasquatch & geno711 the NFL is a copy-cat league to a tremendous degree. Joe’s probably spot on here

That’s just another cliché without substance. The copycat part of QB play starts with athleticism. Trask doesn’t measure up against more athletic QBs.

I don’t see anything new to copycat. You play the QB who gives you the best chance to win. Trask may end up as a starter and maybe even be pretty good. Maybe. But it has nothing to do with a few other moderately successful unheralded young QBs through 5 games of one season. There’s no trend here, just a few interesting data points.

  54. Topdoggie Says:

Kurt Warner was a third string QB. How did that work out. No one has anything but an opinion until he actually gets to play.

  55. Winny Testaverde Says:

Oneil Kissin’ Cousins/OneLilBuc is back to Brady bashing and wanting to move on? This team will be borderline atrocious without him. Maybe once The Taints are done with Winny ( he’s back to 3rd string ) the Bucs can bring him back! The f’ outta here.

I’m with #8…Trask wasn’t the prudent pick there…Andre Cisco was…who’s balling at safety for Jax now.

  56. tbbucs3 Says:

I agree with sasquatch, this article makes ZERO sense

  57. Oneilbuc Says:

Winny shut up Brady is 45 years old it’s time to move on from him next year. Again Brady needs a all star team around him now days and that’s a proven fact go look at the Packers game stupid. That’s not bashing him that’s telling the truth and everyone knows it. That’s why you have some people screaming for OBJ to come here . I get it Brady is your god and if any one don’t ride his jock strap like you do you call it bashing lol 🤣🤣🤣 .

  58. Tbbucs3 Says:

“Kurt Warner was a third string QB. How did that work out. No one has anything but an opinion until he actually gets to play.”

    STRAWMAN!!!

  59. beano Says:

What if we had drafted Justin Fields instead of Kyle Trask in 2021, and this was the QB line in the last 2022 preseason game?

    RTG
    Kyle Trask 99.6
    Blaine Gabbert 89.0
    Tom Brady 87.5

What would you all be saying? I know what you all would be saying. I also know you all lack the honesty to admit it.

  62. Mike C Says:

Beano? Wtf are you talking about? Preseason? The stupidity on this comment section has reached a new level….. just wow 👏 👏 👏 it is impressive at this point.

  63. beano Says:

Mike, name calling doesn’t answer my question. Try again.

  64. Craig Says:

It is all circumstantial evidence. Nothing will happen for Trask while Brady is on the roster.

By the time Brady quits Trask might blow away his stats and everyone will ask why it took so long.

He might also P.J. Losman it and end up watching games in a sports bar.

We’ll never know while Brady is here; maybe because Brady knows how he got off the bench.

  65. Robert Says:

Cant believe you’re calling out the trend of young QB’s and completely glossing over the most important trait of the young QB’s that you mention. They are ALL very athletic. This team will never roll with Trask as the starter, and he’ll never get a shot at a starting gig anywhere else. He’s lucky to hold a clipboard for 10 years if he can make it that long. Put down the Bromosa and the hooka.

  66. beano Says:

“Robert Says: They are ALL very athletic.”

You mean like Brady, Manning, Rothlisberger, Stafford, etc.? LOL

  67. View from 132 Says:

  68. Oneilbuc Says:
