Todd Bowles Expects Unpredictable And “Pissed Off” Steelers

October 11th, 2022

Steelers coach Mike Tomlin

Great point tonight from Todd Bowles, who sort of explained why it’s easier to face a good football team versus a team in turmoil/transition like the Steelers will be on Sunday.

The next Bucs kickoff is 1 o’clock in Pittsburgh against a one-win club with a rookie quarterback and a messy defense.

Per Bowles on the Buccaneers Radio Network, it’s easier to face a team playing well, in some ways, because film study will be more fruitful. The team playing well will keep trying to do what’s working.

The bad team is much more unpredictable when it comes to game-planning.

“A team that didn’t do as well is probably going to change some things up and they’re going to be pissed off, as well,” Bowles said. “So you’re going to get their best shot. And that’s a proud organization. They have some proud players there. So we know we’re walking into a hornets’ nest.”

The Bucs may be walking into a hornets’ nest, but they’re bringing along fire bombs and an exterminator named Brady. The Steelers may be angry, but they’re also bad.

The last time the Bucs headed to Pittsburgh, Mike Glennon stepped in for Josh McCown and threw a dramatic game-winning touchdown to the late Vincent Jackson.

The Bucs have, um, a little more talent this time around — and the Steelers have less.

If only the Bucs would play “pissed off” and unpredictably.

They are like that recurring train wreck you have in your dreams where the train never quite collides, and the dream just repeats.

Five games in and I don’t know who and what they are.

The Atlanta game, although a win, was almost depressing.

  2. SB Says:

I agree that we are walking into a Hornet’s nest. It is a good thing they don’t have one of the best Defensive players in the league this weekend in T.J Watt.
The same T.J. Watt we could have had over O.J. Howard as Joe had to point out on the podcast. 😎

  3. Winny Testaverde Says:

Make no mistake…this will be a tough game. I expect a steady dose of Harris and lotsa blitz pressure. The Bucs usually have trouble with Pittsburgh…except the time Mike Glennon somehow, someway engineered a game winning drive capped off by a Vincent Jackson ( RIP ) TD. Remains one of the strangest Buc wins I’ve ever seen.

Bucs got the next 3 games against cupcake
opponents to get into tip top shape before
having to face the Ravens and Rams, which will
    be very very difficult games.
Just need to take care of business the next 3
weeks, and let Brady get into a rhythm and we’ll
    be fine.

    Cupcake opponents.

    Remember that.

  5. SB Says:

@Doosh……….Somehow I sense that your comment is Dripping in facetiousness.

  6. DoooshLaRue Says:

    ^^^^^^
    Dripping…..oozing…..😀

  7. Bojim Says:

Yes, it’s easier to face good football team like say…the Chiefs.

  8. D-Rok Says:

Dripping and oozing usually requires penicillin. You can either grow your own on a piece of bread, or go see the Doctor, 3 days later, Doosh. I call it the Kool Moe Dee effect.

    LOL.

  9. David Says:

Definitely a very valid point (regardless of what some ignorant football fans may think).
That said, it is another chance for the defense and offense to try to put together a full 60 minute game and dominate!

    34-10

  10. SB~LV Says:

Remember that game when the Bucs went up to Pittsburgh with Mike Glennon at QB and flew home with a solid win?
I am hoping Tom can do the same.
    That is the standard 😎

  11. Redeemer Says:

The Steelers are a bad football team. Tomlin isn’t an X’s and O’s coach. He’s a glorified cheerleader. Had they dumped that turd, good friend of BAs Big Ben, they’d be well into their rebuild. Bucs D should feast on Pickett. He’s limited. Bucs 30-13. If they don’t blow this team out, it’s a horrible sign.

  12. Dooley Says:

Same, they’re no push over, even with the inconsistency at QB, Tomlin will have that defense coached up and fired up. These are the type of match-ups Evans was talking about saying the Bucs have a bullseye on our backs and I’d expect to get the Pittsburghs’ best this weekend. We’ve got a few games like this left on the schedule, don’t let the hype for the first 4 games lull you into thinking teams like the Steelers, Ravens, 49ers, and even Seahawks can’t give us work for 4 quarters and hand us an “L”.

  13. D-Rok Says:

*AHEM* Getting back to football, agree Redeemer. We should beat the Stealers by minimum 7 points, but I’d be much happier with a 21 point win. The Bucs are due for a statement win.

  14. Marc Coppola Says:

Sign OBJ. Trade for DJ Moore. DO SOMETHING!!!!

  15. Slacker Says:

Pissed off or not. Totally irrelevant. Shouldn’t lose to a fairly inferior opponent. Team lacks fire and killer instinct this year. Makes them vulnerable to anybody. And the fact that their offensive coordinator is college level.

  16. SB~LV Says:

Why would Pittsburgh think anything other than they are catching a wobbly team that has shown weakness and inconsistency. They can sense Brady is wounded and be looking to knock him around. Something ain’t right and people are whistling past the grave yard.
    MNF against the Colts
NY Giants in the Wild Card
45 year old QB physically and mentally feeling life

  17. Craig Says:

The Bucs have, historically, had a hard time with rookie and back-up QBs.

Add to that a defense that lounged at the pool after thr third quarter and it will be an interesting game, maybe.

May Bowles has figured out how to motivate his defense and it will be a blow out.

Seems you never know what an NFL game looks like until it is over.

  18. Defense Rules Says:

Take a close look at the Steelers-Bills game and it’s easy to spot the Steelers’ vulnerabilities. BTW Buffalo won that game 38-3 DESPITE only having the ball for less than 23 mins TOP & committing 2 turnovers.

Bills ran 18 times for 120 yards (1 TD) and Josh Allen completed 22-of-36 for 432 yards (4 TDs & 1 INT). Allen threw deep 12 times in just the 1st half & completed only 5 … 1 for a 98-yd TD, 1 for a 62-yd TD, and 3 others for 24, 26 & 31 yards. Buffalo was ahead 31-3 at the half, and pretty much shut it down in the 2nd half (only threw 1 deep pass, and played their backup QB a bunch).

IOW Steelers look to be very vulnerable to the deep pass. And oh ya, they’re obviously vulnerable to the run, even though Buffalo only ran on 33% of their plays.

  19. C2 asante Says:

One would never guess this is a Bucs fan site or that the Bucs lead their division given all the negativity and sky is falling drama…

  20. Rob In Land O Lakes Says:

Pittsburgh is not good. Brady will have the offense ready. Hopefully defense plays 4 quarters. Stop Harris and they will be ok.

  21. Richbucsfan Says:

Bowles’ bored defense is a problem that the Steelers will love

  22. August 1976 Buc Says:

Lets see it’s the battle of the Cupcakes Vs the Bored guys,
    should be a great game.

    GO BUCS!!!!

  23. Natron Says:

Tomlin is finally on the hotseat

  24. LakelandSteve Says:

Let me see, the last time you said a team was bad Joe was last week. The Bucs almost coughed that one up to the Falcons. Underdogs seem to fight harder as do teams that just got humiliated. The Bucs don’t seem to have that killer instinct and that may cost them against the Steelers. On paper the Bucs should roll right over them playing against a rookie QB. I imagine the Bucs are going to see a heavy dose of the run game again. Hopefully the defense can play a full game this time and not get “bored” this week.

  25. Fake fans blow Says:

Some of the worst fans (people) I’ve ever run across are on this site. Some real miserable POS on here.

  26. T REX Says:

    Tomlin>>>>>>>>bowels

  27. Anonymous Says:

Don’t they have like so many players on defense missing not just TJ Watt

  28. August 1976 Buc Says:

Maybe Tomlin is on the retirement seat, not the hot seat.
He has been a proven winner when he has the talent.
Never had a losing season, and 2 Super bowl wins.
Who knows, but I would say retirement before saying Tomlin getting run out of town for this current version of the Myron Cope “Stillers”

  29. Leopold Stotch Says:

Yeah I’m not taking the steelers lightly. Maybe if we were playing like last year, sure. 30 points a game, I wouldn’t be worried. I’m worried this year. They’re gonna pe PO’d and come at us with everything they have.

  30. Winny Testaverde Says:

Tomlin has one Super Bowl win…Cowher had the previous one vs Seattle. He has had longevity and never a losing season. Big Ben was good in his prime…as was Leveon Bell. Colbert always drafted receivers…oftentimes in later rounds…well.

  31. theghost Says:

    paper champs!

    hate the steelers!

  32. Dreambig Says:

It takes wins to build momentum and confidence during a season. While we all feel we could have won that game differently, the fact is we won and we dominated for 3 quarters. 1st place in the division. Let’s enjoy it.

  33. Goatfarmer Says:

There is nothing about our OL or DL that expects anything other than a total big-man mauling of our guys. Todd can’t get these guys ready for physical and fast. The Fowlclowns tried the finesse routs which plays into Bucs hands — until the 4th quarter when they started just going smash mouth. Watch the Steelers just hand off 60 times like the Puds did last year and gain 200+ yards rushing. Before you call me negative Nancy, tell me what you’ve seen from tis defense that indicates it won’t?

On offense, Lenny will probably be 10 carries for 15 yards from BL running him left all the time and Tom will be on the ground a lot. Hopefully we get a few more roghing the passer penalties before he’s dragged off the field.

Nothing worse than the Steelers getting embarrassed.

They will be fuming for vengeance. In their house. With our soft bunch of snowflakes and bored distracted millionaires.

I dont think the coaching staff has the agility to adjust on the fly and I know our players will call it quots if they get hit in the mouth too many times in the first half.

This one stands to be ugly, unless Todd can hopefully do something we’ve not seen him do.

Get the team to play faster and more physical than the opponent for 60 minutes.

  34. Adrnagy Says:

Who cares how they feel. You as a HC prep your team.

  35. Biff Barker Says:

If the Steelers are susceptable to the run, do we finally see KSV play a down?

Hobbled has been players like Hicks, Gio and Jones are a failed experiment.

  36. Defense Rules Says:

After last Sunday’s 4th quarter spectacle, I expect the Bucs’ offense & defense to tighten it up. With Evans & Godwin both healthy (hopefully), there’s no reason we can’t put up some good points on the Steelers. And given that their offense has only produced 77 points in 5 games (roughly 15 PPG average), there’s no reason our defense can’t hold them to roughly 2 TDs or so.

Yes the Steelers will be pissed about their last game performance. So what. Bucs SHOULD be pissed about their last game performance too.

  37. adam from ny Says:

it’s hard to see the steelers and tomlin dropping to 1-5…

he’s just not the type of guy to accept that…

we’ve gotta expect an all out war up in the steel city…

coach t is gonna get his guys flinging the kitchen sink at our bucs…

  38. DoooshLaRue Says:

Remember that episode when Tomlin gave Dr. House a piece of his mind?
Cutty and 13 just stood there in amazement….

  39. Goatfarmer Says:

They might send 9 on the Bucs’ first offensive play of the game. Like the Bowels of Todd said, they will be unpredictable, and they will try to bully our softies. If Atlanta sans Patterson can kill our rush defense, what do you think Najee Harris is going to do? And don’t sleep on Kenny Pickett. Kid has talent and a brain. Dangerous when the Bucs defense is easily bored.

  40. View from 132 Says:

    Bucs by 90.

  41. Bucamania Says:

It’d be nice to see the Bucs put a whooping on someone.

  42. Mike Johnson Says:

Our Bucs need to walk into Steeler country and play mad like somebody stole somethin from them. The Steeler will play hard and will throw their best punches at us early. This is not a gimmie game. Can be a trap game if we are not ready.
