The Passing Bucs

October 4th, 2022

The throw-throw-throw Bucs of 2020 and 2021 haven’t strayed too far from their identity when you look at leaguewide 2022 NFL numbers through four games for every team.

Tom Brady ranks seventh in pass attempts and eighth in total yards. He led the league last season in both categories. So yeah, the Bucs are running more, but it’s not like they’ve flipped the script of the offense.

As regular readers know, Joe is in the throw-more camp. First, the offensive line’s strength is pass blocking, even with newcomers. Second, the Bucs have a receiving corps most teams dream of having. Third, Tom Brady has the arm talent and the smarts.

Joe is very curious to see Sunday’s plan of attack against Atlanta and its questionable defense. Pass defense is not Atlanta’s strength, though they have a couple of opportunistic cornerbacks and defensive tackle Grady Jarrett has been a terror through many double teams with 3 1/2 sacks.

Will the Bucs come out firing?

Leonard Fournette has looked so comfortable out of the backfied this season, and he’s been pass blocking well except for one horror show snap on Sunday.

Plus, based on Todd Bowles’ comments yesterday afternoon on SiriusXM NFL Radio, it seems all Bucs receivers came out of the game healthy. Yes, all of them. Bowles said only Logan Ryan (foot) and Cameron Brate (concussion) were a concern following evaluation.

Man, Joe would be so soothed by the Bucs jumping on the Falcons with the passing game and forcing Marcus Mariota to throw. That’s a beautiful blowout recipe.

Carlton Davis went out – was he injured, or just playing so poorly he needed a binky, a blankly, and a timeout? What was the deal there?
    Injured. “Stinger.” –Joe

Brady’s first year about this time vs Bears, most everyone was wondering what was wrong. I feel this team will right the ship, The most difficult part of the schedule is done. When the schedule came out alot of pundits said if we could come out at 2-2 we would be ok. my biggest concern is most teams take on their demeaner of their coach. That’s why i think BA not being coach has had the biggest effect on the Bucs. That and Suh not here lol

Absolutely, we should open up with the 2 minute offense….and stay with it until it doesn’t work……we need to get on top and stay on top.
Don’t let a team like the Falcons hang around……and don’t take them lightly.

agree making them throw is good for us but the hate for mariota and love for jameis is hilarious. they both suck yet because one guy throws for 5,000 yards (largely attributable to being down by so much to start games as a direct result of his turnovers) and he is the second best QB to ever play for the bucs.

What’s the story with Brady’s shoulder?

Maybe 1 good thing that came out of the Kansas City game is Bowles saw that our strength offensively is the pass game. It looks like the run game against Dallas was not going to be the norm. Throw the ball 35-40 times a game and get back to scoring 30 points a game. It’s the only way we beat teams like K.C, Bills, Chargers, etc.

I’d much rather have last years recievers, or the year before. Players that are injury prone, usually get less healthy as the season progresses. That being said, they can’t run. Brady in the gun 5 wide is their best MO. They’ve looked best in the hurry up.

TBBF, exactly right. And White so far seems as good as Lenny catching balls out of the backfield. In fact I think he may be even more dynamic. He was a receiver at one point. And though Patterson out certainly helps, this team really needs to right the ship against the run on Sunday. Atlanta will try to run from the start and they will probably stick with it. Unless of course we get ahead by a few scores which is the hope.

  10. Craig Says:

Atlanta is a size of the dog in the fight kind of game.

The Bucs can’t let this game slide by being half hearted, they need to play fired up or Atlanta might dink and doink them to death, and passing seems to be the name of the game.

Maybe the line will figure out how to open holes for running plays, but it won’t be this week.

  11. Kgh4life Says:

If the Bucs want to run the football more, they have to pass on early downs to stay ahead of the sticks and to keep defenses guessing. Running on first downs have resulted in too many negative yards.

Falcons, Steelers, Panthers – let it rip!!!!!! 5-2 going into Thursday night VS the Ravens if we air it out – none of these 3 teams have the firepower to keep up

Throw-more camp? 52 passes a game is not the formula for consistent wins.
No to mention keeping Tom Brady Healthy.
“offensive line’s strength is pass blocking” ?!? Hainsey and Goedeke are regularly being pushed in to Bradys lap. Makes it impossible for the less than mobile Brady to step up in the Pocket. Thus hurried throws. Even Brady cannot sustain this, and said as much.
