Report: Bucs “Optimistic” Top Three Receivers Will Play Against Chiefs Tonight

October 2nd, 2022

Might play tonight.

[UPDATE: 3:21 a.m.] Joe will believe it when he sees it.

The Bucs have been so riddled by injuries, as is often reported from the AdventHamstring Training Center (nee: One Buc Palace), that Joe just cannot nibble on the carrot that suggests the Bucs will be their closest to full strength at receiver since Opening Night.

Mike Evans is back from a one-game suspension against Kansas City tonight. But Chris Godwin and Julio Jones? Joe’s suspicious.

But wait! BSPN uber insider Adam Schefter, as he is wont to do in the wee hours of a Sunday morning of game day, has an interesting report. He seems to have been fed intel that the team is “optimistic” of the chances of Evans, Godwin and Jones each suiting up and taking the field tonight.

Joe will believe it when he sees it. The first clue is the active game roster. That won’t be released until 90 minutes before kickoff, roughly 6:50 p.m. tonight.

The Bucs activated Cole Beasley again from the practice squad yesterday.

If Evans, Godwin and Jones are all active along with Beasley, does that mean Scotty Miller will be inactive? Or just Breshad Perriman, who was listed as “doubtful” on Friday’s injury report?

[UPDATE: 3:21 a.m.] NFL Network insider Ian Rapoport had a report roughly two hours after Schefter’s. In Rapoport’s missive, he said the Bucs’ top-four receivers, Evans, Godwin, Julio and Russell Gage “should” play tonight.

Cross your fingers, Bucs fans.

  1. Anon Says:

Beasley is for Perriman but it’s very obvious he’s taking Scotty Miller’s spot.

  2. Daryl Green Says:

If Julio can go. I really want Godwin to
sit out unless to Atl game.

  3. Daryl Green Says:

    ^ until

  4. garro Says:

Beckles (the average at best former NFL Guard) Puts the blame on Scotty.
Guess im in the minority here but I have watched Millers routes on the all 22 and he gets interfered with on literally every play. Way beyond the 5 yards allowed by rule.
Soo… with Vinovich and crew the Mugging of Scotty Miller will continue as planned. “That is all”

  5. Trask To The Future Says:

Garro – Scotty Miller is easily mugged and knocked off his routes because he’s so small and apparently terrible and hand-fighting.

IT’S CHRIS GODWIN TIME. No more holding Chris back if he’s okay to go. Some Bucs fans want us to delay playing Chris until later in the season. I think it’s time they just let him play and see how he does. He’s either going to hold up health-wise or he’s not. Better to find out now than late in the season if he was being relied upon for certain plays and then he goes down and someone else has to step in, which as we’ve seen, hasn’t gone very well so far.

  6. unbelievable Says:

I highly Godwin goes. And I’m okay with that.

Would love it if Julio is ready tho. That would def open things up.

  7. kyle Says:

trask.. thank you.. garo, miller cant get open.. this isnt college..

  8. Defense Rules Says:

Godwin lasted 1 game, got re-injured, then had to sit out the next 2. He’s been limited in practice. Question is: Was he REALLY game-ready or did he come back prematurely? Obviously we’ll never find out the answer, BUT … let’s not rush him back prematurely and jeopardize more of the season. Coaches are being smart waiting until game-time to decide. Bucs NEED Chris to get this offense humming again. He’s a difference-maker … 9 TDs & 55 first downs last year alone in his 14 games. Paired with Mike Evans … 15 TDs & 56 first downs in 16 games … they’re a truly dynamic duo.

  9. Adrnagy Says:

Rest godwin and throw beasley in. More snaps for cole.

  10. Richbucsfan Says:

Great to hear. Let’s hope hamstrings and knees hold up longer than the first series.

  11. Hodad Says:

Suiting up, and playing is one thing, can they make it through a game? Be depressing to see them both limp off again, not be able to finish.

  12. CrackWise Says:

Would love to see Mike have a career game on the heels of Brady getting him suspended.

  13. Kody Says:

    LETS HOPE THEY ALL PLAY!!!

The Bucs didn’t put together a squad of superheros to see most of them ride the bench all season.

Fan are exhausted from the injury merry-go-round last year. We so don’t want another whole season of that mentally exhausting drama.

Pls get healthy and stay healthy guys.

  14. Tampabaybucfan Says:

Second time activated from the PS for Beasley…(I believe teams are allowed only 2)…

That will mean next time it will require a roster spot to activate him.

Barring injury, it looks like that is when Scotty will be placed on the PS……and will probably get claimed somewhere.

  15. Goatfarmer Says:

    Drugs. Give them all drugs.

  16. DoooshLaRue Says:

    CrackWise,

    Brady didn’t get Evans suspended.
Evans did it to himself because once again, he couldn’t keep his emotions in check.

  17. Señor Harry in Costa Rica Says:

Scooter was “inactive” last week… 4 yards on 52 snaps = inactive

  18. Red86 Says:

Great news. Scotty Miller has had a bad preseason and season so far. It’s like he is using Darden’s shoes from last year with all these falls during routes. Maybe Cole will get more chances over Miller.

  19. Brad Says:

This Scotty Miller band wagon has to end. I thought he was interfered with at first, second, third…but if they’re not going to call it then it’s not interference. His inability to play through contact has made him a liability. There is no way around it. Time to move on.

  20. Buc50 Says:

    Time to cut Scooter

  21. 1#bucsfan Says:

it’s only game 4. Let CG14 sit another week out. I know we need him but we need him more later than now. Same with JJ. it’s a long season and we’re only in the beginning. Heavy dose of running and short routes helps get the ball out quick then take some deep shots with ME13. No sense in putting guys out there who arnt fully healthy. If we take another lose it won’t be the end of the season.

  22. captivajim Says:

Beasley should take miller’s slot on the roster.

  23. rick Says:

lets call gronkypoo and win a superbowl

  24. geno711 Says:

Anyone know that Cole Beasley NFL contract will be worth?

Joe said 4.5 million that 1st day.

  25. Rod Munch Says:

Scotty was inactive week 1, so he’d be odd man out for now. The issue, I think, is health – which is why he’s still on the team. You can’t trust anyone other than Evans to actually play week to week – so you need at least 1 other guy. Although, with that said, is someone like Thompkins really going to do any worse than Miller?

  26. Rod Munch Says:

geno711 – Joe said he was guessing that’s what it would cost, not that $4.5m was the deal.

Because of the way the Bucs have signed him, to a practice squad deal, for now, his salary is $358k.

However, once they activate him, I’m assuming they’re giving him more money, but I’d be shocked if it was $4.5m, although they could use void years and spread it over years to bring the salary cap hit down.

I’d guess, as far as the hit goes, it’s around $1m-1.2m. The Bucs don’t have much cap room to play with, and they still have to put money aside for things like injury – or, say, trying to sign Gronk or Suh.
