Window Is Cracked Open For Chris Godwin And Donovan Smith

Bucs coach Todd Bowles cautioned folks not to hold their collective breath about a pair of stud starters possibly playing Sunday night against the Chiefs.
However, Bowles didn’t say, to quote the great American poet D.L. Roth, the pair are “Outta luck.”
Receiver Chris Godwin and left tackle Donovan Smith did practice this week. Bowles cautioned both were limited and he seemed very hesitant on their chances playing Sunday. But there is a chance, Bowles said, albeit slim.
“Those will be game-time decisions on Sunday, but they did do some [work with] limitations in practice,” Bowles said.
Bowles admitted Godwin or Smith would be a major benefit to the lineup.
“Any time you get your starters back you’ll be happy to have them back and have them healthy,” Bowles said. “So, we just want to make sure they’re all healthy when they come back.”
Well, at least Mike Evans will return after an overreaction of a one-game suspension.
Tom Brady seems to be OK with Brandon Walton starting at left tackle. Joe’s not suggesting the Bucs are better without Smith; don’t be ridiculous. But it seems the Bucs are able to survive.
The Bucs’ receiving corps simply cannot stay healthy and Evans back on the field is a major boost. Adding Godwin would be even better.
It’s getting to the point where Joe wonders, with Julio Jones always injured (surprise!) and Breshad Perriman constantly dinged, if Bucs AC/DC-loving general manager Jason Licht may start calling winless teams to see if they are willing to part with a receiver who can friggin’ stay on the field?

Your last sentence asks a good question. Our WR core look as elite as any in NFL history. But they can’t get/stay healthy.

Why do you think Brady is ok with Walton? It’s not like he has a choice if Donnie is out lol. Josh Wells is out, and I have no idea who the fourth string tackle is on this team. Walton had a rough time against the Packers. Brady was pressured a lot in that game. He just got rid of the ball quickly.

Yea verily. Guys always want to get back on the field as quickly as possible, but the coaches have to be smart about it. Letting players get back in there prematurely only hurts the team in the long run.

Smith back will be a blessing, and may help Goedeke…

I’m really starting to feel badly for ol lefty. He ain’t got jack squat to work with. He can scheme anything until the chickens come home but without people on the field that are capable of playing professional football, it’s going to be a constant struggle for BL. I’d bet at times he’d rather be up in the booth with the bourbon brothers than on the sidelines trying to get these glass cannons and incompetents moving the ball.

maybe I need eyeglasses. If I do, somebody tell me but..I saw Walton missing quite a few blocks out there against the pack. I don’t think he drastically improves against the Chiefs.

Without Donnie the run blocking has suffered mightily, although that could also be due to Leftwurch’s predictable bland playcalling whereby the opposing D can send four guys to the prospective hole to plug the run.

@Cobraboy. Smith cannot Goedke from being mauled at the line. Donnie and Ali were great with communication, and Ali actually helped Donnie out. Walton would be an absolute disaster against the Chiefs. Walton didn’t get Brady killed because he was getting the ball out in two seconds. Brady helps his tackles out a lot , but he can only do so much with guys like Walton.

Whenever Chris comes back, for how long?
Every year he misses multiple games.
Hope all goes well, but how long until the next injury that causes games missed?
The returns of the new contract for Chris are like the previous returns, Injuries that keep him on the sideline.
They gambled on Hicks, and it was 1.5 games until his body betrayed him and he becomes a spectator for however many games.
When Hicks comes back, how many games until Hicks is back on the sideline?
So we will Chris ever really live up to his potential, maybe yes maybe no.
All the more it shows how good and valuable Mike Evans really is.

Walton has filled in admirably. I haven’t noticed any real drop off from Durable Donny and he is better than Wells if you ask me. I think we have found a way to save a lot of cap space next year. Goodbye Donny, hello Walton

Rest Godwin at least another week. That would put him on the IR schedule where he belonged in the first place. I’d like to know the dumbass that allowed him to play week one in the first place. I’m sure he was medically cleared and all that, but it was incredibly shortsighted.

LOL …. Joe, Define ok… I think Brady would love to get to his second read With a better left tackle, and not have to go to his hot or to have to force the ball to a guy who is not really open. Walton has done better than anyone expected but come on man 🙂

The pocket around Tom Brady is collapsing fast this year.
The last two years, the pocket barely ever collapsed.
Tom is feeling the heat on every passing play.

Godwin should’ve never played week 1 – was wearing a pretty heavy brace during training camp. And then maybe not week 2 after that either.
Bucs are very different from Packers in how they manage injured players
Cole Beasley was a nice signing. Gronk would be really nice. Time for Scotty Miller to go. Still think Darden is going to improve throughout year. He looks significantly better.

Dardens route was really good but it required time to throw.
That’s the problem with most of the backups.

It’s HILARIOUS that people are saying rest Godwin in this post but in so many others people are begging for us to sign OBJ… Why so we as fans can say, “if our WRs ever get healthy it’ll be scary.” We need to find some young talent for the future and no Tyler Johnson isn’t the answer the guy can’t even make the active roster for Houston. Smh
