Why Change What’s Working?
September 28th, 2022The long fear Joe had in the Bucs promoting defensive coordinator Todd Bowles to head coach when Bucco Bruce Arians stepped away would be that he might tinker with the offense.
Remember Joe’s favorite football commandment? Don’t fix what’s not broken.
Well, if you believe former Bucs quarterback Chris Simms, who spoke with Father Dungy after his sitdown with Bowles, at the very least Bowles has adjusted the offensive philosophy.
What exactly was wrong with no risk it; no biscuit? It got the Bucs one Super Bowl win and likely would have gotten the Bucs to another had that jackarse Antonio Brown not gone mental.
So what was wrong with no risk it; no biscuit?
Now if you want to tell Joe that with so many new pieces on the offensive line the Bucs cannot go no risk it; no biscuit without getting Tom Brady broken in half, OK. Joe will buy that.
Joe doesn’t understand what was so wrong with one of the best offenses in the NFL the past two years.
There was nothing wrong with no risk it; no biscuit.

He wants to control time of possession. You do that by running the ball more.
That said, I think the injuries and inconsistencies have been the biggest reasons we haven’t seen more deep shots and big passing plays.

It’s always a higher risk hiring a guy at HC that failed so horribly once before….
Looks like the Saints, Raiders and the Texans are learning that the hard way as well!

I feel like when we get all our guys back healthy the offense will look more like it did against the cowboys – granted we had some problems in the red zone – we moved the ball consistently and were getting those big plays – I feel like this offense IF healthy will be fine – the best days are ahead of us – as always GO BUCS!!

everyone knows that our WRs are a big part of our run blocking. They use a lot of bunched sets. you think Miller(who might be the softest wr I can remember), Darden, and Gage are going to crack and block?
Lets wait until guys get back to overreact. It is possible we miss the best coach in team history though.
3 years ago I couldn’t imagine missing Donovan Smith this much. How times have changed.

He will slowly turn this team into the JETS if we keep Bowles where we have him. He should not have one finger on the offense Leftwich either

No-risk-it-no-biscuit worked for 2 primary reasons: (1) Bucs HAD an awesome OLine these past 2 years to protect the Ancient One; and (2) Bucs had several awesome WRs & TEs to catch the balls thrown by the Ancient One. Our strength was in our passing game … OLine & receivers … and the running game was just considered nice-to-have. Tom Brady was well-protected and routes had time to develop.
This year thus far, we’ve had a new OLine (4-of-5 positions) sporting 3 rookies, our star wide receivers have been injured (or suspended), our TE group (missing Gronk) is sporting 2 rookies, and the Ancient One is obviously distracted & stressed. TB12 is feeling the heat IOW.
Seems like you wrote a piece yesterday Joe titled ‘Tom Brady Feeling the Heat’ which said exactly that. The key quote: ‘Justin Fields of the Bears and Jimmy GQ of the 49ers, both mobile quarterbacks, are the only NFL signal-callers who are dealing with a pass rush as much as Brady is’.
Comparing the 2020 & 2021 teams to our 2022 team is a joke, and a cheap shot by Simms. Todd Bowles did the only thing he could do to try to win games & keep Brady vertical: RUN THE FRIGGIN BALL MORE & USE MORE SHORT PASSING to try to mitigate the pass rush. The offensive personnel we put on the field Sunday couldn’t have made No-Riskit-No-Biscuit work if their lives depended upon it.
Dealing with an inexperienced OLine & injured receivers is tough enough for Bowles I’m sure. But having to do that with an OC who’s had the luxury in the past of working with elite offensive starters but who now seems to be incapable of maximizing ‘less than elite’ players must be exhausting for Todd.

It’s always the coaches fault. It’s always the teammates fault. It’s never Tom’s fault.
Are people fans of the sport or fans of the player? Because I distinctly remember Tom Brady getting Bruce Arians kicked upstairs and trying to make a play for Miami. He didn’t want to be here. He is only here because it was his only choice. There’s a reason he unretired after 40 days, it’s because we were looking at other QB options.
Don’t get me started on Brady’s massive mistake on the 2-point conversion that cost us. I felt really bad for the defense.
At this stage in his career, Tom Brady is a complimentary piece. And that’s okay. The defense carried us to the Super Bowl in 2020; they are the strength of the team. But unfortunately, the QB play is hurting the team.

It’s simple Joe, with this O line, and Scotty Miller receivers, if we risk it, Tom’s going to get hit in the biscuit!
September 28th, 2022 at 6:44 am
I hate these “Fake News” no risk it no biscuit articles.
The posters changed Bruce Arians meaning of the phrase to a simplified passing philosophy that Bruce likes to throw deep. That is never what Bruce said.
“If you don’t try great shots, you won’t hit one,” is actually how Bruce Arians described it.
The best display of that was against Green Bay in the NFC championship game with the Scotty Miller TD.
I think that is what Leftwich is missing. BA in his ear on certain plays. I actually don’t think that Bowles has told Leftwich not to try those plays, I actually think that Leftwich does not see things as well as BA.

BL will bring losses if he continues to run it on 1st down 80% of the time!
September 28th, 2022 at 6:52 am
Here is the greatest thing that BA said constantly besides no risk it.
“You’ll never go broke putting money in the bank”
The big play may not always be there. It’s OK to check down. It’s about making positive gains.
September 28th, 2022 at 7:57 am
Although he doesn’t need to go full No risk it no biscuit mode, Bowles better let Brady throw more. Quite clear after the last two weeks, the running game is not working. Get the passing game going again and the running game will open up. The opponents will stop stacking the box. And Brady has been quite impressive throwing the ball.
September 28th, 2022 at 8:35 am
Not making it to the Super Bowl had nothing to do with that dum dum AB. Could’ve taken that NFC Championship game to OT had Bowles not blitzed the best QB in the league against the blitz on that last pass to Kupp.
September 28th, 2022 at 8:56 am
Easy. It’s the OL. Get Donnie back, get Mikey, Chris, Julio back to go with a healthier, broken in Gage and Mrs Beasley, and d Tom will make sure they open it up.
There were quite a few deep shots taken in the Cows game. The big one to Julio, a second near miss to Julio, and a few to Perriman.
Given the morbidity of the offense against the Pack, Boron won’t have a job of any kind unless he gets with BA and Tom and adjusts game plan and play calling.

Anonypuss, the offense averaged over 31 points a game the last two seasons, not sure what defense has to do with that. Unfortunately if they fell below 30 the D would give up too many points and Bucs would lose. Has this stupendous D you speak of ever have a shut out? 10 SB appearances, 7 SB wins almost every QB record broken with many times not so great receivers. 2 HOFers, Gronk & Moss, possibly Evan’s. I really wish you played the game instead of being on the cheerleading squad you may have a different opinion of the best that ever played the position.

You want to win get rid of the Jets old trash. Oh FYI, he failed as interim HC in Miami as well. The fact that the players almost pulled out a win with such poor play calling and time management is a testimate to the back-ups.
September 28th, 2022 at 10:59 am
This is too simplistic. yes dont fix what isnt broken but if you dont adapt in the nfl you die. happens every year with offenses and defenses as ohter teams study you all offseason. you simplify this way too much. offense sucks right now but maybe leftwich needs to be the one adapting. this isnt due to change in philosophy if guys arent getting open. we win on sunday if we dont have those two fumbles.

3rd string left tackle, rookie left guard, freshman center, new right guard. You can’t just wing it like the old days with that much uncertainty

DR….spot on. Go Bucs!
