Byron Leftwich Says He Wants To See Cole Beasley On The Grass

It’s been a trademark of the Tom Brady era: adding accomplished veteran receivers.
Antonio Brown comes to mind, as does Julio Jones. The difference this time is those guys had injury histories (and in Brown’s case mental problems) but newcomer Cole Beasley does not.
Signed today, Beasley brings to the Bucs 550 career catches and a 10-year history of durability.
On the Buccaneers Radio Network tonight, offensive coordinator Byron Leftwich seemed to be tickled about the addition.
“Obviously you got to bring somebody in, right (laughs)?” Leftwich said when asked about the challenge of bringing Beasley up to speed.
Joe’s not sure why Leftwich was laughing, but it seemed like a laugh of confidence because Beasley is so accomplished.
“He’s a veteran guy who had 80-something catches last year,” Leftwich continued. “He’s caught a lot of footballs in this league. He understands what it takes to go out there, a true veteran, really. A true veteran, that’s the only way you can do what he’s done and put on tape what he’s put on tape since he’s been in this league. So it’s a veteran guy where we need help in that room right now because we’re pretty banged up. We’ll see where it goes. We’ll get him in here and we’ll see. It’s tough to say what type of role or anything [Beasley will have] until I actually get an opportunity to get on the grass with him and see what’s there. But we’re happy to have someone like that, a veteran guy who understands this league and knows how to play.”
Leftwich noted that sometimes adversity due to injuries early in a season can be fantastic for an offense, and he thinks the Bucs are likely in that boat right now.
Joe sure hopes Leftwich is correct. If the Bucs can somehow have Mike Evans, Chris Godwin (bad hamstring), Julio Jones (knee), Russell Gage (hamstring) and Beasley in peak condition by Halloween, that would be one ridiculously impressive receiving corps with Scotty Miller and Breshad Perriman backing them up.

Joe has blown his rockers if he thinks Miller will be here and Darden wonât. Iâm not convinced Joe is that coo coo, just a smart business man. Miller is as good as gone, and I will cry tears of joy!

Maniac – so far this year how many targets has the DardOn gotten?
How many holding penalties?
You donât think if DardOn were all what you fantasize he is that Brady would be demanding that he and not Miller get the playing time and throw to him? If the coaches are that Gaga about DardOn, same deal. Scotty had two near misses that are considered drops. The DardOn wouldnât have even gotten a hand on either of those passes because Brady wonât throw to him.

Itâs a long season boys. These teams that r running wide open offensive throttle will drop off like they always do. If we are going to have injuries itâs best to have them now as opposed to what happened last year.

Agree with what Kentucky said. Much better to have injuries now then late season/playoffs.

The obvious pro-Beasley bias by Joe in this article is nauseating. His Twitter antics have been a distraction in the past, including publicly arguing with fans. wouldnât doubt if one of the conditions on him signing was to disable his Twitter account.. which he did earlier today.

I’m sure the coaches and Licht were totally in favor of the move after what they witnessed on Sunday. Tommy ordered the code red on Scotty. Leftwich kept emphasizing veteran. I have no idea why some fans are clamoring for Thompkins like he would a difference maker. He’s on the practice squad for a reason. Brady is demands a high level of detail from his guy, and you’re not gonna get that from the kid. Beasley knows about leverages and how to get open against defenses, and he’s tough as nails. This is an all in season. We don’t have time to hold guys hands.

To be precise, Beasley had 82 catches for 693 yards in 16 games. If Brady can’t utilize that, I’m out of answers. He is exactly what this team needs. A chain mover, who knows how to manipulate linebackers and corners. Thought Gage would be that guy, but something is off with him. Not sure if he’s still nursing an injury or what. I’m sure Brady put in a call to Jules, and was shot down. Edelman’s knee is bone on bone. Beasley isn’t the answer, but he’s a damn good cheat sheet for Brady. Wonder why the Bills didn’t want him back. He doesn’t have a ring, and the Bills should roll to the superbowl barring major injury problems.

Beasley is an Edleman type. We don’t have anyone like him. Scotty Miller only has a vertical launch, he doesn’t cross in and face the quarterback. If anything I thought they would have promoted Devin Thompkins. Not only does he criss-cross but he also runs curls and is very illusive. This team needs a scat back hybrid that can out run everyone, we need more speed. Our recievers don’t get any separation, the tight ends look like the are running on quick sand. You can tell Brady is getting frustrated. With Beasley maybe this might open up other opportunities, it better because the defense can carry the offense for only so long.

I’m wondering aloud how much BL was channeling his inner Brady, and just repeating the sales pitch he heard about Cole, and how much were his actual words/thoughts?
Either way, BL is on point: it makes sense to bring in a vet with lots on tape vs an unproven player at WR.
We shall see. I know Beasley is like a little squirrel and quick. Might be the missing link to this offense, in the mold of an Edelman.

Maniac is a fan of DardOn, so not even stats, not even the fact that Brady wonât throw to him, not even the fact that he negated a nice run because of a holding penalty (his only offensive stat) are going to change his mind.
Scotty had two âdropsâ that would have been spectacular catches. He caught 3 for 34 yards and three first downs. He gets open. The DardOn canât even do that.
One penalty on the stat sheet. Zero targets. Why? Not open and Tom doesnât trust him. Check yo sheet.

If anyone should have blown up the Saints DB for getting in Brady’s face. It should have been Miller!!!
Instead, Miller was having a beer on the sidelines while ME was taking care of business and #1 was in there doing what he could to SHOW his SUPPORT.

Beasley is another past his prime, shot football player that the Bucs signed. Just like Jones, Hicks, Rudolph, Gage, Bernard and Tom Brady. @Dave Did you forget that the old geezer Brady led us to a championship from our long lost decade? The guy that youâre arrogantly dismissed. He made this team relevant and ushered in a new standard of greatness. BA took a chance on Brady in 2020 because he did his research and saw on film that Brady was not washed as fans and pundits alike thought, but he saw that Brady suffered from a lack of quality skill players. He saw a guy who could still make about every throw on the field. The arrogance of some fans to just summarily dismiss Bradyâs importance to this franchise is astounding. I remember the brown paper bag days and the empty stands. Letâs not dismiss him like heâs Vinny Testerverde
When our defense struggled last year and dealt with a rash of injuries, especially in the secondary, they were afforded patience. Our offense had to lead the way while we worked to get healthy on defense. Now, our offense is ravaged by injuries and we have new faces, people want to overreact and bury Brady and this offense after two games.

Beasley is a big time possession receiver, Great at getting first downs 10 yards or less. That is something we need right now based on 2 games of third down failure. Looking forward to seeing him on the grass.
