Gerald McCoy Says Bucs Are Best Team In NFL & He Wants To Play
September 4th, 2022Former six-time Pro Bowl Bucs defensive tackle Gerald McCoy is busy in the gym these days staying hungry and ready to be signed off the street.
And it sure sounds like he would love that team to be the Buccaneers. Hey, who wouldn’t want to play for Tampa Bay?
McCoy, 34, joined The Rich Eisen Show this week to talk about all things NFL and himself.
Asked to name the best team in the league, McCoy went with the Bucs. He admitted that he’s biased, but he also said the strong argument can be made that the Bucs indeed have the best team.
As for his own career, McCoy said he just wants a team and it’s not about money or playing time for him. “I don’t have that much pride,” said McCoy, noting that he’d be happy to called upon to mentor young players in addition to contributing on the field. “Let me show you how I see it from a All-Pro’s viewpoint. … You got to know when your time has passed and where you’re at in your career.
McCoy added that he’s healthy after various injuries and his agent has been reaching out letting the world know his client is grinding and eager to jump on a plane.
“I’m staying ready. Things always happen,” he said.
Heaven forbid the Bucs have an injury to one of their defensive tackles, would general manager Jason Licht call on McCoy?
Joe can’t speak for Licht, but Joe can say with certainty that McCoy was respected in the locker room and remains close with several guys on the Bucs. That bridge hasn’t been burned.

NOOOOOO
September 4th, 2022 at 7:27 pm
Hey, you never know and never say never.
September 4th, 2022 at 7:27 pm
Can’t say I’m against it, but imagining that it only would happen with an injury is too much for me.
Go Bucs!
September 4th, 2022 at 7:36 pm
“I don’t have much pride”
Yeah we know Gerald, we’ve seen you in a kimono.
September 4th, 2022 at 7:37 pm
Here comes the small di*k haters
September 4th, 2022 at 7:37 pm
Don’t know what we would get in McCoy. If he is now one of the lesser players on a team of great players, and playing with the Bucs, he might raise his game and play better than many would think. Or…. his playing days may be over.
September 4th, 2022 at 7:38 pm
Oh C’mon, McCoy haters! You can do better than that! Let’s hear all the good Mr. Softee and Gerald McIceCream lines. Joe is absolutely chumming the waters. It’s like telling Doosh LaRue that Donovan Smith is an All-Pro and just WAITING for the comments to start rolling in.
You all can do better than this!
September 4th, 2022 at 7:41 pm
If the need arises due to injury as the season goes on, I would have no problem with it.
But… If it’s a veteran to play back up at a cheap price due to injury later in the year, at that point I’d rather go with SUH, assuming he would take a pay cut.
September 4th, 2022 at 7:44 pm
Come on home Gerald, it’s time.
We’ve missed your passion and leadership and I don’t care what others think, you sir, are a Warrior.
September 4th, 2022 at 7:47 pm
Who would we cut for his spot???
September 4th, 2022 at 7:49 pm
When 100 million+ of Glazer loot ain’t enough… 🙂 Nassib has #93 and the re-run/re-tread role. McCoy has been hurt in the first drill @ Cowboy camp and then suspended for “performance enhancers” with the Raiders. Haters or not…he’s not a viable option.
September 4th, 2022 at 7:52 pm
Maybe if he can play special teams
September 4th, 2022 at 7:55 pm
Doosh Larue says: “Come on home Gerald, it’s time.”
Rob spits drink across room setting world drink-spitting record.
Classic, sir. Well done!
September 4th, 2022 at 8:03 pm
His style of play isn’t really suited to our defense. And his game, when he was healthy, was built on explosiveness and quick upfield penetration. After all his knee injuries, it’s doubtful that he has much of that left.
September 4th, 2022 at 8:09 pm
Welcome home Cancer 93
September 4th, 2022 at 8:14 pm
😀
September 4th, 2022 at 8:23 pm
Considering everything else they’re allowing this season, such as Nassib, might as well bring in other bad former softies and waste roster spots.
September 4th, 2022 at 8:28 pm
Work him out..we know how he used to look ..comparing his abilities now should be fairly easy and I’m all for cutting Nassim to bring on Gerald..I’m curious what gmc vea nicks ..all lined up..gholoston as the rotational player. .
September 4th, 2022 at 8:36 pm
When Arians took over they got away from McCoy as fast as they could. Hopefully one day it comes out on why they dropped him and went after the other and better 93. Did they know McCoy was done or was it that he didnt have the attitude the new staff wanted.
September 4th, 2022 at 8:40 pm
“Let me show you how I see it from a All-Pro’s viewpoint.
Hahahahaha! GMC was never an all pro. The only reason he ever made the pro bowl was to due name recognition. Dude sucked and the only defenses he lead were tissue paper soft.
September 4th, 2022 at 8:52 pm
When McCoy played here, Tampa was a prime squad for veterans to coast into retirement with a nice paycheck.
I wonder if he realizes that the culture has changed somewhat and that just isn’t an option anymore.
September 4th, 2022 at 8:58 pm
Vegan diet didn’t work out too well, did it? Who woulda thought.
September 4th, 2022 at 8:59 pm

September 4th, 2022 at 9:05 pm
If there’s an opening for water boy.
September 4th, 2022 at 9:05 pm
Not happening
September 4th, 2022 at 9:09 pm
Can he play special teams? Just saying.
September 4th, 2022 at 9:09 pm
Probabilities of coming back:
Suh: 60.0%.
GMC: 0.06%.
No prediction on Gronk. That guy cray-cray, in a good way; affable, perhaps.
September 4th, 2022 at 9:18 pm
I’d kick the tires
September 4th, 2022 at 9:20 pm
McCrybaby is washed
September 4th, 2022 at 9:36 pm
If he can still be effective in short spurts and comes dirt cheap, I’d welcome him back.
September 4th, 2022 at 9:40 pm
i like McCoy, but I’d take Suh first.
September 4th, 2022 at 9:46 pm
McCoy tutoring young players:
“OK Guys! Twistie Treat is BY FAR the best soft serve. ALWAYS go with it in a pinch. Avoid real ice cream. Twistie will cater. Here’s the number. Can I get get a “Go Defense!”?”
September 4th, 2022 at 10:01 pm
I agree he was over rated
September 4th, 2022 at 10:13 pm
McCoy tutoring young plyers:
“OK Guys! Winning isn’t everything. Sportsmanship is important. Learn how to lose with dignity. Maybe even help an opposing player up off the ground. Remember it’s just a game.”
September 4th, 2022 at 10:32 pm
Practice squad maybe. Let him actually stay healthy, show his worth and get in game shape while tolling away on the practice squad. Otherwise, no way at all.
September 4th, 2022 at 10:32 pm
Ok ok ok. McCoy then Suh.
September 4th, 2022 at 10:50 pm
I would take McCoy back on the cheap for a rotation guy. Sure
September 4th, 2022 at 11:14 pm
It’s strange how disrespectful BUCS fans are to this guy.
I have never really understood it.
Was he a perfect player? No.
But can we not treat the guy with just a little bit of damn dignity?
He started here for 9 years.
Just a thought.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:15 pm
I’d give him McClendons job or O’Conners
September 4th, 2022 at 11:28 pm
The responsibilities of a three teck on a therr man front isn’t quite the same as it is in a four man front.
No hate, and I appreciate his years of service … But no.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:33 pm
With the bucs mccoy refused to play nose. Has he ever played in a three man front? On passing downs we’re going with a lighter, faster front. Gerald wil not fit in.
September 4th, 2022 at 11:35 pm
Don’t need the great get off that ran away from contain just to look good and falsely claim disruption teaching the young guys anything !!
Arians clearly said get the fake disrupter non performer outta here !!!
September 4th, 2022 at 11:36 pm
GMAC deserves a chance, just not with the BUCS
September 4th, 2022 at 11:50 pm
Maybe the Swashbucklers could use Geraldine’s kind amiable demeanor to help them learn their routines better. He could do that.
Otherwise, time to file your retirement papers, Geraldine. You are toast and have a PED violation and suspension on your resume.’
Maybe you can get a regular gig on Ian Beckles’ show.
September 5th, 2022 at 1:22 am
I guarantee he still has 1 of the quickest first steps in the NFL.
I would love to see him signed as pass rush specialist.
Imagine Suh and GMC.
Suh, the run stuffer. GMC. The pass rusher.
Sounds good to me.
September 5th, 2022 at 2:59 am
GRRRR!!!! HE READS COMIC BOOKS! GRRRR!!!! THAT MAKES ME SO ANGRY!!!! GRRRRR!!!! AND HE LIKES BATMAN!!!! GRRRR!!!! SO ANGRY!!!!!

He would go on IR when boarding the plane
September 5th, 2022 at 7:07 am
$1.00, 1 day, retirement signing.
I’m afraid he no longer “fits in”.
September 5th, 2022 at 7:10 am
Let sleeping dogs…….
September 5th, 2022 at 7:13 am
Not a chance they bring that soft as butter never was back no thxs career loser
September 5th, 2022 at 7:17 am
All pro ya 10 yrs ago go on now get softie
September 5th, 2022 at 7:30 am
Can he play oline???
September 5th, 2022 at 7:38 am
The two guys watching from home that could help on D line are Suh and McCoy. Suh is and has always been the obvious choice.
September 5th, 2022 at 7:49 am
Call Lovie!
September 5th, 2022 at 9:12 am
I don’t know what McCoy has left in his tank, but whether it’s him or another experienced vet, one more steady backup would help. Our D line is not famous for sustaining their effort. Another vet to rotate in to give our chubby defensive tackles rest would be a good idea. Doesn’t have to be McCoy. Suh would be ideal if he would accept that role at a reasonable price.
September 5th, 2022 at 10:35 am
@Howard – LMFAO !! That was a good one
September 5th, 2022 at 10:54 am
Couldn’t be any worse than Sherman
September 5th, 2022 at 11:56 am
“My bad, Ben. My bad.”
September 5th, 2022 at 12:41 pm
You hold work outs for this
September 5th, 2022 at 12:47 pm
mccoy said from an all pros perspective…. what a joke.. mccoy sounds pathetic, begging to be back.
September 5th, 2022 at 12:47 pm
mccoy is a great human but a bust
September 5th, 2022 at 12:52 pm
As far as the blind hater accusations: Thats just silly.
More likely the people who DON’T see McCoys issues are the ones who should be held in contempt.
Howard loves McCoy. Hes’a a great human being. He has a kind heart and a good mind. But he has the wrong attitude for an NFL D linemen.
Suh is a great example of the correct attitude for an NFL D lineman.
Suh is a good member of society but a menace on the field. He takes losing to heart. He demands great effort and great endurance.
McCoy, when he was FACE OF THE FRANCHISE, should have been blasting teammates for any poor performance. He should have stayed on the field through any but the most debilitating injury. Instead he (AS LEADER) helped create and perpetuate a lax culture of acceptance of mediocrity and acceptance of losing.
Specific examples of this have been documented ad nauseum.
McCoy would be out of place on a Brady led team, even in his physical prime. Brady would see right through McCoy to the soft and chewy center.
So yeah, as a diehard Bucs fan, disgusted w the performance of the Bucs teams under McCoys watch as LEADER the franchise, Howard is mad….
Grrr
September 5th, 2022 at 2:15 pm
Maybe if the Bucs sponser a kid’s day, we can hire McCoy to show up in his Batman suit.
September 5th, 2022 at 2:18 pm
Surely someone can put a meme together highlighting the regime change by putting a picture of #93 Suh stopping on the QBs head, while McCoy is in the background in his Batman suit jumping up and down like a little girl.
September 5th, 2022 at 2:41 pm
I would love to bring him in as depth / mentor type. Gerald belongs in Tampa.
September 5th, 2022 at 2:43 pm
Somebody here hit the nail on its head. He will not be any worse than Sherman. Not here of course. But on an up and coming team like the Jags which needs Mentorship.
September 5th, 2022 at 4:02 pm
Nothing wrong with him wanting to play ……an injury on our Dline would force management to at least do their job and kick some tires to check the pressure GM93 could bring!!
September 5th, 2022 at 5:00 pm
I wouldn’t mind bringing McCoy back I think he can be some help to our defense. Maybe just on passing plays like on third down or on a rotated roll.
September 5th, 2022 at 5:26 pm
For a few bucks and a 12 packs of old milwakee maybe
September 5th, 2022 at 8:43 pm

mccoy is a great human but a bust
——–
Are you an idiot? The guy was a 6x pro-bowlers, and 3x all-pro.
That’s like saying John Lynch was a bust.
What a clown.
September 6th, 2022 at 5:47 pm
A lot of armchair quarterbacks, McCoy was good. Stop and think of all the other players who have been released. Its a business, reason for dropping players is to gain others who might be better. Not all trades or releases work out the best. He just might have more passion and ability. Plus his got a good head on his shoulders. They day they retired Brooks I swapped jersey’s right there at half time, from Brooks to McCoy.
