“I’m Not A Doctor”
August 22nd, 2022Just 20 days from opening night in Dallas, Joe has to wonder whether it’s nearing the point where stud receiver Chris Godwin won’t be cleared to play in that game.
Godwin is recovering from major early-January knee surgery. He’s yet to face any real contact in practice, and the Bucs are keeping him away from those situations.
It’s a smart move, but when will it stop?
Head coach Todd Bowles was asked today to share his level of optimism that Godwin will play on opening night, Sept. 11. “I’m not a doctor. I can’t make that decision,” Bowles replied. “
Joe suspects Tom Brady gets a different answer when he asks Bowles and others for a status check and a projection on Godwin.
Hopefully, Godwin is healthy enough to avoid the Bucs putting him on injured reserve after declaring him on the 53-man roster. If the Bucs made that move, then Godwin would have to miss four games before being eligible to return.
Of course, if Godwin needs until October to be ready, then the Bucs might be wise to put him on IR and temporarily save as a spot for one of their talented bubble receivers.
August 22nd, 2022 at 4:19 pm
Keep Dallas guessing anyway.
August 22nd, 2022 at 4:23 pm
Actually a few weeks on the IR would be a good idea.
August 22nd, 2022 at 4:24 pm
Isn’t week five Atl?
August 22nd, 2022 at 4:26 pm
Absolutely no need or no reason to answer that question now……so don’t ask.
Might as well ask if you expect Gronk to come back or Brady for 23.
August 22nd, 2022 at 4:30 pm
I am with BucsFanFred!!
August 22nd, 2022 at 4:32 pm
Almost 3 weeks to decide. Im sure he is ready but no issues w bucs playing safe. But You got to let him put his big boy pants back on at some point.
August 22nd, 2022 at 4:38 pm
Don’t gamble, if there is doubt sit him out on IR
August 22nd, 2022 at 4:45 pm
Luckily for Todd , most of the JBF posters are doctors so he can just read the posts on here to know when to play Godwin .
August 22nd, 2022 at 4:51 pm
I wouldn’t care if we sat godwin for a month – evans Jones gage will be able to hold things over until he gets right – don’t need to rush him back when our wide receiver core is as loaded as it is – would also get T.J. some valuable playing time early in the season – he has looked much better this pre season and i hope he continues to show out! GO BUCS!
August 22nd, 2022 at 4:53 pm
Receiver is the least of our worries. Sit him down if there is any doubt.
August 22nd, 2022 at 4:55 pm
Shouldn’t risk him if he isn’t ready, in any way. Too much to lose if he isn’t. Evans, Jones, Gage, and the fourth best guy should be enough, if the D plays well.
August 22nd, 2022 at 4:57 pm
I will be very surprised if he does not start against Dallas.
August 22nd, 2022 at 5:12 pm
The Bucs are built for built for the deep pass. Given the OL situation, were gonna have to tighten up the field rather than stretch it.
Godwin excels at everything, slot and underneath too. It’d be stupid to risk him when we’ve got other very capable players.
If its IR, so be it.
August 22nd, 2022 at 5:15 pm
Godwin will be ready to go week 1. The question is whether the Bucs are ready to let him roll, or whether they will play it safe.
August 22nd, 2022 at 5:26 pm
If we don’t sign a Center and OHG it won’t matter
August 22nd, 2022 at 5:26 pm
One thing for sure, we better stay healthy because our depth at most positions is crap!
August 22nd, 2022 at 5:48 pm
I want to see him play but I think they should be extremely cautious. He is pretty much on unprecedented ground with the speed of his recovery and he is way too important to risk re-injury by rushing his return.
August 22nd, 2022 at 5:49 pm
Can he carry two DB’s on his back?
August 22nd, 2022 at 5:50 pm
Godwin participated in 11-on-11 today for first time (black jersey)
Shouldn’t that have been added to this story?
He will be active week 1.
The question is how many reps / ability to produce like the CG we know and love.
He won’t be out till October.
That is fake news like when we were told Godwin would be out till December (lol)
Or like when we were told Brady wasn’t on a vacation and might bounce the Bucs until he was on a vacation and came back to the Bucs.
A lot of fake news lately.
August 22nd, 2022 at 5:56 pm
Nobody seems concerned about Godwin being ready. What they seemed concerned with is being asked the same questions over and over.
August 22nd, 2022 at 6:03 pm
El Blundo has to watch some film. That is a smrty pants answer. What would Lovie do?
August 22nd, 2022 at 6:07 pm
Didn’t Gronk comeback to early last season? Just saying!
August 22nd, 2022 at 6:15 pm
Patriots are shopping Isaiah Wynn. Any interest? He can play guard but played tackle for the Patriots.

August 22nd, 2022 at 6:23 pm
I would definitely let Chris sit out a few games. If you’ve ever had any kind of knee injury, you know it takes time and it takes more time to have confidence in the knee and get the injury thought out of your head. Let him sit.
August 22nd, 2022 at 6:42 pm
It’ll be interesting to see how Gage does in that slot position rotating with Tyler Johnson who’s very hot right now. Godwin’s a beast but if he needs a little extra time that’s fine.
August 22nd, 2022 at 6:56 pm
It would probably be a huge mistake to rush his return to contact. We need him for the long haul and playoffs. Plenty of good receivers to fill in for now.
August 22nd, 2022 at 7:11 pm
Francisco, if Wynn us any good Brady will let them know. No one knows better than him, he played with him when he came into the league.
August 22nd, 2022 at 7:29 pm
IR is the smart decision. He should’ve been placed on pup, but for no other reason than to protect him from himself. I’m sure he wants to get back out there ASAP. Bowles needs to prove himself this year, or he likely will be a career DC. I’d hate to think that figures into the calculus. I seriously doubt his absence will be felt much in the first four games anyway. Unless of course you’re one of these blind homers, who thinks he’s 100% and will give the same production as last year. The way he moves and cuts will be restricted. To what degree IDK. I do know this. It takes a while to just get accustomed to that clunky brace.
August 22nd, 2022 at 7:35 pm
Wynn costs too much. His salary is $10.4 million and I doubt the Patriots will eat any of it as his pay grade makes sense at OT. The current Buc cap space is $10.3 million, and with two vet O Linemen needed, I don’t think it makes financial sense. I get the feeling that there’s the Bucs are hesitating on financial commitments and contract restructuring.
August 22nd, 2022 at 7:35 pm
In other words, I’d love it but I do not see it happening.
August 22nd, 2022 at 7:53 pm
They’re shopping Wynn because he’s seldom healthy. Has he played a whole season yet?
August 22nd, 2022 at 8:10 pm
After JC Tretter, The guy I want to see the Bucs go after is Eric Fisher. Fisher is a Free Agent and can be converted from Tackle to Guard
August 22nd, 2022 at 8:17 pm
The Saints that night tried to take out half of our F’ing team.
Can’t wait for CHRIS GODWIN #14 to make his return.
And SAINTS……. you are going 0-2 against us this year.
August 22nd, 2022 at 8:21 pm
Passing, stop talking about the fake cap please. You know as well as I that it’s real dollars in and out. This isn’t the NHL. The NFL cap is going up in perpetuity. That and an owner who wants to spend is all that’s needed. The freaking Saints went from 62 million over, and miraculously got under enough to be in on the Watson sweepstakes. The cap is a myth perpetuated by greedy, cheap owners. Give me a piece of scratch paper, and I’ll find the cap space. It’s not 1995, when Cap jail was a real thing.
I disagree about Wynn. I think Bill would eat a chunk of his salary, simply to be rid of him. He’s close to a busted pick, who doesn’t have a true position. The guy has career swing tackle written all over him. If I were the bucs, I wouldn’t touch him with a ten foot pole.
August 22nd, 2022 at 9:03 pm
GOB Says:
“The cap is a myth”
____________
You sure seem right.
I wish to hell the TB Lightning could work in the NHL cap perimeters like the NFL works. We would not have lost alot of damn good players in the last 2 years.
But it makes me hopeful that the BUCS can get some help on the OL.
August 22nd, 2022 at 9:06 pm
No GOB, cap space is real despite “kick the can” manipulation. It forces a team to mortgage the future in an effort to win now. That’s why GMs have to work with the owners, so that they balance timeliness and profit goals.
I don’t think Wynn is bust as when he’s healthy he is actually decent. That is why Belichick picked up his fifth year option. Belichick knew that given the relatively pricey market for LTs, he’d still extract value for Wynn. Some needy team will use Wynn as a LT.
August 22nd, 2022 at 9:32 pm
There are teams as rich in OL as the Bucs are @WR … patience grasshoppers
Massive players going to be cut in less than a week.
August 22nd, 2022 at 9:58 pm
Give pats 3rd pick n perriman ..have them eat the cap for tackle..we get him for a mill
August 22nd, 2022 at 10:10 pm
Wynn would be costly, and I’m not sure if he could play guard. He’s also got a similar undersized problem as Shaq.
George, if Eric Fisher is available, yes, that would make sense. It’s time to get the list together of all quality OLs who can play or convert to guard.
The problem is, I don’t get the impression there is any interest in making a move. Even if Brady kicks up a fuss. They’re determined to let Hainsey, Leverett, Goedeke, Molchon, etc. get smashed. Gates of hell, wide open. I really fear for Brady. I’d be regretting coming back if I were him.

Doctor Doctor please
August 23rd, 2022 at 1:42 am
We really need a tackle too. Fisher has always been meh. Wynn the same. Neither is durable, but maybe better than our bubble tackles. Wynn is shorter. Maybe he could back up at guard too. Neither player is worth more than a sixth.
August 23rd, 2022 at 3:22 am
people won’t like this, but i’d sit him for 6-7 games…
remember when AB came in at midseason and knocked scotty and his 500 yard half a season of receiving yards out the box…
let some newer guys get their feet planted and build a rapport with brady…
then let cg14 jump back in the mix, all fresh and ready, and hopefully hit his stride with brady in november, december and the playoffs
August 24th, 2022 at 12:44 am
Nobody seems to remember Scotty’s 100 yard game against the Chargers either.
