Chris Godwin Participates In (Some) Practice
August 16th, 2022Bucs fans, Joe brings you excellent news.
The Bucs have yet to play their second preseason game and already Chris Godwin, rehabbing a blown knee, participated in part of Bucs practice today. Yes, really.
Godwin has progressed to the point that he was involved in seven-on-seven drills as the Bucs practiced in the Glazer Shed this morning. Godwin caught a pass in red zone drills inside the five and jogged in for the touchdowns.
No, this was not walk-throughs. Guys were going full speed.
As Joe wrote yesterday, the Bucs are in regular season mode where only the first 30 minutes of practice is “open.” Though the Bucs let the local pen and mic club watch all of the practice, Joe and other media were forbidden to report on any of the practice after the 30-minute viewing window closed.
So when Joe saw Godwin catch his pass and run straight to Joe, (Joe was sitting in the end zone, third row), Joe was trying to figure out how to write about it without getting into trouble. Joe thought about typing, “Really cool math here: An interesting receiver took part in seven-and-seven drills.”
(Godwin’s number is 14 for those who don’t get it. You know, 7 and 7 = 14?)
Later, Joe asked a member of the Bucs media relations staff if it was OK after practice to just mention Godwin’s participation. He didn’t say no but asked Joe to hold off for a moment. Shortly after, Bucs coach Todd Bowles mentioned Godwin practicing, So Joe figured it was OK and Joe got the green light.
And now you know the full story.
How awesome is that? Godwin, with the season roughly a month away, is getting closer. So perhaps he may be back for Week 1?
Reason to get excited, Bucs fans!

That is good news… Evans, Perriman and Gage are out with injuries (already)…
Interesting note – the Bucs just cut Russ Cockrell. I hope this is a sign our defensive backfield has improved from last season…

Godwin will be ready but will Bucs coaches be ready to play him?
Russ Cockrell cut……a sign we are likely to keep more WRs……..
My guess is this…….Evans, Godwin, Gage, Jones, Perriman, Johnson & Darden
Yes…that’s right Scotty, Grayson & Thompkins to the PS…
With one caveat: It is possible we work a trade for Perriman….his salary is low at $1,047,000…..he’s fast & experienced…..a WR needy team could use a guy like that……so, if he’s traded….Scotty would make it.

And some were saying he wasn’t going to be ready until Thanksgiving!! Hah!! Chris is a hard worker no doubt

I am chuckling at the trolling prognosticators on this site suggesting that Godwin would not be healthy until November and even then, would be a shadow of himself.
Time to step up you guys that were wrong.
August 16th, 2022 at 11:34 am
Take your time. I don’t want him in until he is not only near 100%, but that he is able to withstand future injury. He may still be in a danger zone for a reoccurrance.

Anyone else keep singing the ‘I got a big ol’ bowl for 5 bucks’ kfc commercial?
Cockrell getting cut, while sad, is a great sign. That dude was a starter for a while last year!
Suh.

@ TBBF
I am still hopeful the Bucs put oft injured Perriman on IR to start the season and we keep 7 WRs…
Evans
Godwin
Gage
Jones
Johnson
Miller
Darden
Grayson/Thompkins to the PS…

If you get any medical advice from Dr. Booger you’ll probably want to get a second opinion.

Godwin is just amazing. Now, time to get Gage healthy. And it does seem Perriman gets dinged up pretty easily. And Mike with the hammies.
Someone mentioned that maybe the Bucs should overhaul their training and conditioning department and put Brady’s guy in charge of it. I’d be all fotr that,

@TBBF – I have that exact 7 with Scooter being traded for a Oline right b4 final cuts
@Marine
I’d like to see Sterns/DT (tiebreaker being best returner) make it over scooter to be honest. Gives more versatility and gamely flex. Scooter is kind of a one-trick pony and albeit a fan favorite spots are hard to come by in this glorious run. We won’t be able to keep er’body and I want BP too (using your scenario)

*gameday flex

I see the WR depth chart ending up like this:
Evans
Godwin
Gage
Jones
Darden
Johnson
Grayson
Perriman, Miller, Thompkins, Sterns and Geiger get cut and some of those will get picked up on the practice squad, depending on who doesn’t get picked up by other teams
August 16th, 2022 at 12:26 pm
If you don’t think Grayson is making the team you’re not paying attention. This kid has paid his dues and without standing toward the end of last season. He has world-class speed and can catch the ball. Also had chemistry with Brady.

@ 02
I like DT a lot. But at 5’8″ 155 he is a bit undersized. He needs to land on PS and spend a year bulking up a bit…
I believe Miller was severely restricted last year after injuring his foot… By all accounts he has had a very solid training camp and has improved his range of WR abilities.

@ Buddha
I like Grayson but he has one decent game last season and goes directly on IR…
Not a good sign for a “track star” who is trying to be a football player.

great news. hopefully they are playing coy with Jensen as well
August 16th, 2022 at 1:08 pm
Smart for them to ramp him up slowly, but zero doubt CG will be ready week 1!!!
August 16th, 2022 at 1:09 pm
Joe, help me understand IR & PUP rules. Should the Bucs stash Godwin (PUP or IR) before final cuts and how would that impact their allotment of slots and timing of his return? Feels like the smart move is to ensure he heals up for the long haul and use his spot to keep an extra wideout.
August 16th, 2022 at 2:13 pm
geno, no way. I still believe he should’ve started on pup. You know as well as I, that the earlier a player returns from ACL MCL surgery, that the chances for a hamstring or quad go up exponentially. Not trying to be pessimistic, I’m just worried for the kids future. BTW geno, if you think they’re getting the Godwin from last year, you’re crazy. He had surgery 224 days ago.

Smashsquatch, An IR designation can occur after the start of camp, and at any point during the season, post season included. Active/PUP designation can only happen before camp. Teams are allowed 8 players that can return to the 53 from IR. They tweaked the rules this year. So, Godwin isn’t available for the pup list, only IR.
August 16th, 2022 at 4:14 pm
August 23 would’ve been the deadline to place Godwin on pup.
August 16th, 2022 at 8:13 pm
Fantastic!!!
Just please do not push it too soon, they have plenty of depth
August 16th, 2022 at 9:47 pm
Smash/Maniac:
If a player is played on IR before the initial 53-man roster is set, he’s done for the year. So clearly Godwin is not going on the IR. Joe wouldn’t bet on Perriman making the 53.
