GM Jason Licht is pumped for one of his draft picks.
Just about any NFL suit or coach will tell you the same thing.
A good NFL player will take a big leap from Year 1 to Year 2.
And that makes sense. The major adjustment is over, the body should be stronger and the mind should be faster. If the guy stays with the same coaching staff, then progression should be inevitable.
That doesn’t always happen, but Bucs general manager Jason Licht believes it already has with edge rusher Joe Tryon-Shoyinka, Tampa Bay’s 2021 first-round pick.
“He’s taken a big, big leap from last year. The entire team can see it,” Licht said of JTS on WDAE radio. “… He’s just so athletic and very comfortable in the scheme right now. He’s got that great first step, playing with more power, putting it all together. I’m expecting big things out of him.”
It’s just 29 days from Week 1 of the regular season. Yeah, Joe would love to see JTS have a strong preseason and all the training camp hype has been fun. But the real stuff will tell the story.
If he improves his run defense and can climb to eight sacks or more in a starting role, then the Bucs will have scored big — again — in the draft.

It’s his brain that we need to see develop. Everyone can see the extra beef he added. Can he stop the headless chicken act, stop taking himself out of plays constantly?

It’s really two things. Can you beat the man in front of you? Are you in the right place according to the scheme/play that was callled (can your team depend on you to be in the right gap or forcin plays back to help, etc). We will see, but I am excited to see what he can do this season.

JTT will be a good pro. He’s got all the tools. We pissed our 2nd round pick away though on a 4th string QB when we could’ve added OL, LB. or DB depth.

There is a sophomore slump, but I don’t think Joe will catch it. He put in a lot of work over the off season and looks like he bulked up some.
Now he needs the right aggression in his attitude. With it he will be better than fine.

Big Red – sort of agree. I think we need to be drafting a QB every single year, no matter what. The position is too important not to. Probably 90% will flame out, but eventually we’ll hit on one. Green Bay did this during the Favre years, and found a lot of successes. Maybe we won’t be as fortunate but only 1 is all it takes. Now maybe we drafted one too high last year, easy to say now but I get your point. That being said, my view is that we need to be grabbing one every year.

And IF Bucs did that, we’d be spending 1 of our top picks on a single position every year. Pretty much guarantees that the top talent needed for all those OTHER critical positions would never get drafted, which in turn would pretty much guarantee that ANY QB we draft would be trying to win with 1 hand tied behind his back. Not to mention what that’d be saying about our scouting staffs (can’t identify talent?).

Everyone addressing all these problems with the Tampa Bay Bucs but in my mind, if you don’t have a good line for Brady, stop the rush up the middle you can have 10 Tyree hills and I ain’t going to do you a bit of good because as you all watched Freddy will throw it in the ground like he should or throw it out of bounds this Jensen situation is terrible coaching up a player from AQ Shipley is one thing playing is another, look what happened in the LA Rams game when Brady came back and got so far behind, wafhs was hurt and the Rams were breaking the line almost on every play. Then Brady had to scramble, and then Gronk came back in and started stopping Von Miller.

I hope Licht is right, that’s going to be a huge question mark until he proves it in games. With that said, I’m not down on him at all, I’m smart enough to know that if you expect big rookie season from players, you’re an idiot. Outside of maybe RB, very few rookies do much. The 2nd year leap is a big thing, and also keep in mind that JTS took a year off of football because of the plague, and that might delay things even a bit more. To me, if he starts out slow, but gets things going by midseason and ends with 6 or 7 sacks, that’s no failure of a season. He’s still at the point where you just want to see improvement over time.

JTS is bigger stronger and faster this year. Now with the development of a quicker first step and playing on the Buccaneers which is a much improved defense he will have at least 8 sacks much because of his own doing.

The jump is incredibly difficult. Many of these guys have been the best athletes on their team, since grade school. It can be a shock to the system. I know it was for me. If you have the talent, attitude, and work ethic, progress usually happens. From all accounts, JTS has those traits. I’ve seen guys with all the talent in the world wash out, because they lacked the proper work ethic. Nothing comes easy in the Not For Long league.

The kid is an awesome athlete. His rookie year he was too often the chicken running around without its head still on. Long off season, a year of reviewing his game film, adding physical strength, he may be primed to go! Hope he has a breakout season!

@SB~LV, I made two NFL practice squads in 92 and 93, as a SS. Back then, they could only legally carry 5 “taxi squad” players as we called it. In 89, many guys like me joined a class action suit against the league. Because of that, the league adopted a developmental program. Those guys were paid something like 1K per week, without being able to negotiate higher pay. Because of them, I was paid around 3k. We were basically cannon fodder. The league also screwed with the active rosters in those days. It was a confusing time.

SteveK, I’ll never forget it. I crept down near the box on a run play. A lineman got second level and knocked me about five feet backwards. He then proceeded to squash me into the grass, and literally wouldn’t let me up. That lineman’s name was Harris Barton. Later that day, H. and Roy Foster tinkled in a Gatorade jug, and told GOB he looked thirsty. You can guess what happened next. They also took the tires off my 1988 Chevy Beretta, and hid them around the facility. The sun came up before I found all four tires.
